Even Japanese people value John Denver's work. I even heard that country roads was the first ever western hit in China. A very nice version of a special song.
So instead of translating the song literally or word for word (because the average Japanese person wouldn't understand the reference to West Virginia) you translated the spirit/mood of the original song. *Edit:* I noticed the song doesn't say anything about mountains even though Japan has mountains. Do mountains mean something to the Japanese other than a nostalgic sense of security and peace at a rural home? That's what the English version seemed to convey. The Japanese version sort of conveyed a sense of home in a rural place, but it was subtle. I'm going to assume it was written that way because it was supposed to be written by someone in the movie that wasn't an expert songwriter.
I remember watching whisper of the heart and the part where all of them join together to play this and sing it tugged at my heart so much. I love how talented everyone is who poured their talents and love into that movie. Thank you for letting me reminisce on that.

This was not a Miyazaki’s film, he was “just” the screenwriter; the director was Yoshifumi Kondō, an animation director for a lot of the most important Ghibli’s films before 2000’s. I think it’s important to point this out because this was the only film directed by Kondō, who died due to complications caused by overworking in the late ‘90s if I remember correctly, and nobody ever gives him the credits he deserves :(

Wait a minute, this country road didn't take me back to West Virginia
So instead of translating the song literally or word for word (because the average Japanese person wouldn't understand the reference to West Virginia) you translated the spirit/mood of the original song.
*Edit:* I noticed the song doesn't say anything about mountains even though Japan has mountains. Do mountains mean something to the Japanese other than a nostalgic sense of security and peace at a rural home? That's what the English version seemed to convey. The Japanese version sort of conveyed a sense of home in a rural place, but it was subtle.
I'm going to assume it was written that way because it was supposed to be written by someone in the movie that wasn't an expert songwriter.

It's pretty cool they made a Japanese version of this song for one of Miyazaki's most beloved films. After watching the movie on Netflix recently, the song is one of my favorites.

This was not a Miyazaki’s film, he was “just” the screenwriter; the director was Yoshifumi Kondō, an animation director for a lot of the most important Ghibli’s films before 2000’s. I think it’s important to point this out because this was the only film directed by Kondō, who died due to complications caused by overworking in the late ‘90s if I remember correctly, and nobody ever gives him the credits he deserves :(
