Ever since I was in primary school in 1990 my Social Studies teacher taught us to always know the full meaning of any acronym. I knew the full meaning of JAMB and WAEC even still in primary school and those have never left me till date. The truth is this: our reading culture is at its lowest, children aren't encouraged to read newspapers and magazines were most vocabularies, phrases,etc are learnt. It's a really sad situation.

The right abbreviation is WASSCE not WAEC. WAEC(West African Examination Council) is an institution.
WAEC pronounced as one word is different from W.A.S.S.C.E
