Been a subscriber since the early days and not sure how you consistently provide this level of outstanding content. Without much thought I've been doing the exact same thing for a few weeks and amazingly the weigh is starting to drop off. I'm a huge cyclist who used to feel the need to 'carb up' before a ride and afterwards treat myself to whatever was in the pantry. Let's first jettison the visceral fat before focusing on eating like a TDF rider.....
This is the best advice I've watched on RUclips. I started training weights and treadmill taking 2 protein shakes every day. No weight loss in the first 2 weeks so stopped taking the protein and then lost 7lbs in 3 weeks. Thanks mark.
Hey Huel, please make sure to pay this guy. When it comes to diet and weight loss, I’ve noticed that when I’m organised, get enough sleep, and exercise consistently (especially running), my diet improves without much effort. I depend less on food to boost my mood and energy levels. I don’t count calories and actually tend to eat more, but it’s higher-quality food because I need the fuel for my running.
let's all watch this multiple times and don't forget to "like" it to get the engagement up. he deserves it just for his integrity alone. i didn't think the previous video was SO terrible to take it down but this one is definitely better without the music. well done Mark!
Thanks for removing the background music from us non-native English speakers, and in lieu of the hard of hearing, too! I always prefer music-less videos.
Much more Mark without the background music and loud transition sounds. And incredibly Mark to “fix” and re-upload so quickly! I watch to listen to you and take a break from the high dopamine driven content everywhere else!
I watched both videos. I really don't see the problem with the first one. Both would have been in my top 3 of your videos until now as it is about exactly what I struggle with since for ever
I'd like to have seen the original. It seems like he had already packed his microphone before recording this. But regardless, the content was quality enough.
Re food vs training - sometimes the obvious needs to be stated, and you do it so well. I watched both videos and feel like I got a million times more out of the second one. Amazes me how the edit can make such a difference. Love your work.
Absolutely Love this perspective Mark! I have a history of disordered eating and my go to after a binge was excessive exercise. As part of my recent food addiction recovery journey where i lost 20 kg, I stopped considering exercise as a weightloss method and only use it to improve my physical abilities.
I couldn't work out why i wasn't following this video and realised it was the music. Ive started with this new version and it's so much better. Thank you!
Cracking video Mark! Just wanted to say thank you for all your content. I had a transformational year this year. Went from obese and sedentary to dropping 4 stone, and being the fittest and healthiest I have been in my life. I cycled London to Paris a few months ago, slowly improving my 5k time (from being unable to walk 5k, let alone run it) to a 27 minute 5k. I can run 10k in about an hour. I’ve got a bike FTP of 251. All started from zero this year, all with help of motivation from your content. Had a few bumps in the road with injuries, but you have literally helped to change my life. And helped to stop me from certain death at a young age. So, massive massive thanks. Best of luck with the house move!
This is great, I needed to hear this. I used to be an incredible athlete, and ate for performance. At this phase of my life though, you’re absolutely correct, it’s time to better separate diet from my moderate exercise.
Lovely video. Came out of watching the he last version not knowing the take homes at all because it was lost. This is perfect. Appreciate the re-upload. A different edditing approach is always welcome, just remember that your message, experiance and wit is what makes you a great creator. Editing should just compliment this, not dominate it! Much love as always 👍🏻🙏
Mark, I wasn't particularly offended by the previous video but I agree with everyone that this is much more like it! Your script writing is so good and the thing that makes your videos unique - it doesn't need all the edgy edits. Fair play for taking the feedback like a champ.
I'm 54 and have been running for about 8 years. I've ran 3 marathons and during all 3 of those training cycles , I put on weight. Mostly down to 'fueling runs' . For most of this year ive been following a high protein , low carb program (six pack revolution) in which I've lost 3 stone. To start with , I struggled for energy on runs but now that my body has adjusted, I don't think about fueling shorter runs and anything longer (10 miles plus) I have a mid run protein bar which is fine. Occasionally I'll go for a run to stave off hunger pangs. For any workouts that deserve it, I have a post workout shake and I've never felt fitter. All of my running PBs have improved over the last few months and exercise in general is much more enjoyable. It's far easier not to eat the Mars bar than to try and work off those calories.
Hi Mark , this is very interesting and very closely matches my experience of putting on weight when marathon training - highly dissapointing , i agree that carb load etc is overdone and u can train the body to run a fair way up to about half marathon on nothing , i will defo keep an eye on the carbs , good advice cheers Simon
I fuel myself to the level that feels right and don't worry too much about weight during most of training, but I do start worrying about it as the race gets closer and my activity level tapers off. I restrict my diet to being healthy and minimal calories until the carb load a few days before. Not a pro or anything, but it does work for me; I feel good for the training, still get the glycogen storage from the carb load, and am lighter for the race.
I have been running for 15 years or so although the last 5 years have been pretty poor and I took up cycling. Every winter I have taken up running again and it has been abysmal. Very slow and my legs just couldnt take it. Calf pulls, achilles, knee, hip, back. I would be lucky to do a 25 min 5k. But this year has been different. I started doing weights a few months back and started taking in around 150-200g of protein a day. Around 10 years ago I was training with a club and could manage a sub 20 5k but my protein intake was minimal. But after starting running again a few weeks ago I have seen a rapid progression to a 22 min 5k despite only doing 12 miles a week. Recovery is quicker and I have renewed optimism that I can, at 54 years, get back under 20 mins again. So, yeah, increased protein looks to be a factor.
Everyone who is trying to lose weight should watch this video and learn something . Great advice Mark . The health service is totally struggling with so many people who don't need to be there with a little bit of self help , lifestyle and food choices . Then as you say pull in the exercise and gym to help out
I really enjoy your content and it motivated me to fight my overweight and fatliver. Since March im 10kg down and had my first halfmarathon yesterday. You are awesome and your style of Videos is perfect for me. If a sponsorship here and there helps you financially, take it. Greetings from Germany
Separating the two is a super helpful piece of mindset (and practical) advice. On another note, I've noticed that my attitude to food changes when I fast once a week. The best explanation I have come across is that it teaches us to distinguish between feeling hungry (a bit subjective) and requiring food. Of course, this is a tip for the general population, not the super high-volume athlete.
Great video as always, Started getting into running about 3 years ago, and actually find it harder to control my bodyweight since training for marathon distance+ Long runs over 2 hours seem to make me uncontrollably hungry for about 2 days! Not sure how much of it is in my head but it means I've actually put weight on whilst training more, and then after the race it's a nightmare winding down the amount of food i need.
Hey Mark, if a full separation works for you, great. I also completely agree that most of the current training plans for people who are overweight or generally have not exercised in a long time are failing terribly. However, there *are* clear links between diet and exercise, even for that exact group. There have been several studies showing that going from no exercise to a modest amount of *low* intensity exercise (for this group, 30 minute walk/hike or equivalent) actually has a hunger *inhibiting* effect in most people, which means sticking to a smaller number of calories in their diet easier. That's without thinking about the mental and physical health effects such a practice has, which also have crossover with making diet easier. There needs to be better ways to introduce these things to new people (couch to 5k is the wrong lens for most), but I think the current diet-only regimens have an even worse track record of effectiveness than combined move + diet, so the fact that diet is being separated is clearly not the main thing that would make a new method beter.
Mark worth mentioning maybe to people that are overweight and taking up training the best way to lose fat is to drop carbs rather than calorie count- it’s just easier and gets faster results which helps move off the first rung 🤷♂️ love the content and the new pad Ps I’d go for garden room office and leave the gym in the barn 😵💫🤗
I had to find out about the diet being important when I had ankle surgery and couldn't train for weight loss, so I changed my diet, and miraculously I lost weight. I now try to base my calories on what I need for a sudatory life style at my goal weight, this means I'll always be in deficit. Trying to fast for 12 hours overnight helps, our bodies are quite capable. When people ask about how many calories should you take in for a 10k because it is nearly an hour of exercise, remember that most people don't take in any calories for at least 8 hours, everyday. Great the way you flip the connection between food and exercise around, makes a great point.
I relate to this, after an injury I have not run for 6 months but can cycle and walk briskly, I now eat healthier than even when I was running, my guidance is going into clothes shops and trying size XS on just to make sure my Withings aren’t off 😅great video as always
I was surprised by the re-upload. I thought there was nothing wrong with the original, but well done for listening to your subscribers according to the comments section. I love your perspectives and humour, Mark 😊
Based on time of upload I must have watched the original without noticing anything amiss- now I really want to re-watch that to check I’m not going mad! Great video either way, weight loss for me is all about intake control!
Decent video. Can relate to it, last 18 months been fuelling to train.. been injured the last 2 and wholly focused on diet, lost far more body fat and now finally see the abs.. Funny how a shift of focus can really yield results
One thing about weight lose, is that exercise makes your body fitter which will decrease the likelihood of having a sedentary lifestyle. Ironically you will feel more hungry and eat more the more sedentary you are compared if you are out and about being active. In fact it's really quite easy to lose weight when you're almost too busy to eat food, something that will be hard to do if your body can't withstand the workload. So indirectly exercise that trains your body absolutely facilitates weight loss by making you less likely to overeat. This video hits the nail on the head, when you actually try to fuel for your training sessions then it's easy to overdo it and actually gain weight!
I'm curious as to whether you already had a 'normal' edit done just incase people moaned about the change. 😂 Good to try different things every now and again. Either way, great content and message as always. 👍
You already have a lot of muscle and aerobic fitness. The point of training for weight loss is to build higher capacity to burn energy. More muscle allows you to burn energy faster and better cardio allows you to do it for longer. For someone who starts out with a very low capacity, exercise is still an important part of weight loss.
Mark, Very interesting and extremely well put together video as usual.... Every year I do the Concept2 Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve 200,000 metres challenge,(btw im English) it means rowing on a CONCEPT2 rower for about an hour a day, by the end of the month I haven't lost a pound, unscientific i know but I've been doing it for nearly ten year's with the same results..
People want a quick fix, you're so right, when my work colleagues ask me how to lose weight and build muscle ,the 1st thing they ask me is how long will it take and how much protein do i eat, they want to become an athlete straight away, you have to start at the beginning, its a process to try to make your life better and keep yourself out of the hospital. Iv never tracked my food, I look at what's going to help me throughout my day with my exercise 💪Love all your videos, you makeme laugh 😂 By the way im no athlete, im just pleased iv lost weight, can move more and im much happier 😊
This message of diet for weight and exercise for fitness has a fundamental flaw. Many will just say they dont care about fitness and do diet only. While it's perfectly possible to lose weight through diet alone, it's much harder. If you don't exercise and diet your body will lower your resting metabolic rate so you have to keep eating less and less to keep deficit. Exercise also helps with craving so it's easier to eat healthier. Doing the new drugs also address cravings, so Mark is now able to separate diet and exercise, but thats far from true for everyone.
Haha! Totally agree….anytime I have lost weight has been when I have taken control of my diet. Exercise makes me feel great and keeps me fit but I don’t think it keeps the body fat levels down. Interesting video as ever
Watching a 2nd time just for kicks lol. I had no issue with the original upload, but with the amount of people who did, good on you for listening to the feedback!
Beginners in most things seem to fall into the min-max trap - thinking that the only way to make progress is to train like a pro... or worse, like an influencer tells them they need to (and here's a product you need...) Common sense talk Mark. It doesn't need to be complicated!
It took a major shoulder injury that put me down for an entire 8 months to realize this. Loosing weight with exercise is not even something I think about anymore.
Mark, since I caught your attention: how about a poll or two: 1) how cool are viewers in general with sponsorships? 2) how many videos per month are they cool seeing sponsored? We all know that money matters, and for my part, I'm fine watching a bit more content if it makes your life less stressful. It's not just the parasocial thing; I'm just a prince among men 😅
I love your videos, text always brilliant and the way it is set up, cut and everything just feels honest. But that camera tilt at 4:55 gives me headaches :D
Beautiful. The last video was the first Mark Lewis video I ever gave up on half way through. No malice or negativity I just didn’t get the message. I’m all for someone doing no exercise and losing weight through medication - that’s a personal choice. My issue was I’m not sure how this content would be in anyway interesting to me. I was thinking Mark may have put the kibosh on his whole channel. Now let’s never talk of it again.
For weight loss, a calorie deficit is king. Yes, exercise can help you achieve that. But what you put in your mouth, or rather what you don’t put in your mouth has the biggest impact on your weight.
Calories in and calories out is broadly true but it’s not 1 to 1. We don’t utilize every calorie we consume and the reasons are complex. It is possible to be relatively sedentary and eat above BMR and still lose fat. The types of foods we eat, our gut bacteria, our hormones, stress levels all affect how we deal with excess calories. I’m not suggesting you can sit on your ass and double your BMR and lose weight but calorie deficit isn’t the only way to shed fat.
It really doesn't matter how you achieve the caloric deficit. By moving more or eating less. Eating less is way harder than simply going out the door for a run. I didn't change my diet all that much. Lost 20 kg in 6 months by running 60k a week (10k each day except Sunday when I have 2 hrs of dancing class with my wife). Works like a charm for me. Might not work for others though if they find it harder to move more than eating less. Problem is that the chance of a yo-yo effect is much bigger when trying to lose weight through diet changes that cannot be kept up long term.
Honestly surprised that anyone is surprised by this. Calorie deficit causes weight loss, resistance training influences how much of the weight lost is fat vs muscle.
I’ve already watched the original version but am watching this again for 2 reasons… Firstly, the message is great and needs to get the views it deserves. Secondly though, I’ve followed your videos for the last 18 months and have made huge ‘gainz’ in terms of weight loss, muscle building and improved physical and mental health because you hit the nail on the head in terms of your message and your motivation. For whatever reason, the original video had a very different feel due to the use of music and a more ‘influencer’ type of video cutting with lots of random cuts and angles. Removing the music has helped hugely but the editing itself is still not your usual, smooth and straightforward style which is what I like. I hope this isn’t taken personally but whatever the reason for the edit change, please return to your usual style 🙏
I totally agree that it is the net calorie intake that does the difference. If you just go lower than your basal metabolic rate (eat less than you consume) you loose fat/weight, it is that simple, no exercise needed. I can even say that aerobic training is making me eat more thus causing me to put on wight. I had to stop exercising for months because of my lower back pain, during these months I start eating less as well now I am a few kilograms lighter.
Good to realize this. Bodybuilders have known this for a long time. I spent time focused on aesthetics with zero care for performance, my goal was looking like I could bench a lot without actually being that strong. If youre sub 10 percent body fat you look good with even a small to moderate amount of muscle. If youre training for performance you might be faster 5lbs fatter, you might be slower depending on your caloric intake, recovery ability, etc. I've run 25-30 miles per week for awhile and actually gained weight some months because I was "overfueling." Aka being a pig because I knew I put in miles.
Thanks for removing the music. Hope it doesnt hurt the youtube income too much uploading the same video again. But ill watch it twice, just doing my part.
Everyone is different. For me personally, running for about three hours a week causes small but consistent weight loss. Without any changes to my diet. Not running that much and my weight goes up slowly. But the point that diet matters a lot more than exercise I definitely agree with.
I did the Great North Run with loads of porridge and bananas at 6 am. Had a horrible run. 2 weeks later did the Birmingham 1/2 marathon on 2 pieces of toast - 10 mins faster. Just demonstrated to me how little you actually needed to fuel yourself as a recreational runner.
Really interesting point about training and then overeating. I am obese and have done the same on and off when I excersise . In fact my weight went up and I stopped training as my weight went up. Now I excersise and take Mounjaro weight loss jab. Only lost a stone in 5 months but being over 20 stone for a decade it's a win.
This is a cracking video mate. Great way to think about it, i.e seprating diet from exercise and gym, brilliant. Eat like the idea is to lose weight and train like you're trying to achieve performance goals.
I remember the old video when Mark understood that Jen ate exactly the right amount of junk food to remain trim and not put on weight without exercise. So actually he's understood this all along, had the working example right under his nose for years, and now just realising that it works.
@@MarkLewisfitness Good man. Me neither - for the last 40 days, at least. What's different this time is that I didn't set a goal, I just stopped. When did you give it up? Are you gonna do a video on it?

Nope, thought I would give it overnight-woke up this morning and started from scratch. I don’t mess about. 😂
So true, food is the only factor to loose weight. Thanks for explaining this, so I can share this with family and friends.
sitting on a random object in a messed up garage 😆 love it
Watching this version to cheer up the algorithm (& the sponsors)
Iv never tracked my food, I look at what's going to help me throughout my day with my exercise 💪Love all your videos, you makeme laugh 😂
By the way im no athlete, im just pleased iv lost weight, can move more and im much happier 😊
The section in your office is 1000x better to watch in this version, I was getting motion sickness with all the zoom in and outs on the original 😂
Revolutionary way of looking at things.
Liked the initial one, liked the second one...just like your stuff here❤️
Great video (as always) couldn’t agree more 👍🏻
Love your work Mark.
Great video. Good luck with the move!
Exercise helps maintain diet focus and also improves body composition (muscle quality and strength) for longevity. Love Huel (and burgers 😅) btw 👍🏼
Haha! Totally agree….anytime I have lost weight has been when I have taken control of my diet.
Exercise makes me feel great and keeps me fit but I don’t think it keeps the body fat levels down.
Interesting video as ever
You're an inspiration Mark
Much much better !!!!
Watching a 2nd time just for kicks lol. I had no issue with the original upload, but with the amount of people who did, good on you for listening to the feedback!
Beginners in most things seem to fall into the min-max trap - thinking that the only way to make progress is to train like a pro... or worse, like an influencer tells them they need to (and here's a product you need...)
Common sense talk Mark. It doesn't need to be complicated!
Great video pal
New studio looks to be taking shape! Cheers lad
Great videos Mark, thank you
It took a major shoulder injury that put me down for an entire 8 months to realize this. Loosing weight with exercise is not even something I think about anymore.
Mark, since I caught your attention: how about a poll or two:
1) how cool are viewers in general with sponsorships?
2) how many videos per month are they cool seeing sponsored?
We all know that money matters, and for my part, I'm fine watching a bit more content if it makes your life less stressful. It's not just the parasocial thing; I'm just a prince among men 😅
Thing is, I just don’t want lots of sponsors. So even if everyone said “we don’t care” - I wouldn’t want to be making that stuff.
“Cakes pretty good.”😂😂
I love your videos, text always brilliant and the way it is set up, cut and everything just feels honest. But that camera tilt at 4:55 gives me headaches :D
Thanks for the video Mark
Studies done years ago showed that diet impacts weight loss far more than exercise.
But what you put in your mouth, or rather what you don’t put in your mouth has the biggest impact on your weight.
exercise *will help you achieve that in many ways
Problem is that the chance of a yo-yo effect is much bigger when trying to lose weight through diet changes that cannot be kept up long term.
watching again because you're a legend
Great video for the average. So easy for the ‘not average’ to take this knowledge for granted
Commenting to help algorithm as should have more views 💪🏻
Honestly surprised that anyone is surprised by this. Calorie deficit causes weight loss, resistance training influences how much of the weight lost is fat vs muscle.
My favorite diet advice yet: travel to places where there's not a lot to eat 😂
Thanks Mark
Excellent message!
This is a cracking video mate. Great way to think about it, i.e seprating diet from exercise and gym, brilliant. Eat like the idea is to lose weight and train like you're trying to achieve performance goals.
Great message - thanks
I remember the old video when Mark understood that Jen ate exactly the right amount of junk food to remain trim and not put on weight without exercise. So actually he's understood this all along, had the working example right under his nose for years, and now just realising that it works.
Fine.. I'll watch it again. I also had no problems with the music but this video is so relevant.
Waaay better message than the previous vid ❤🎉
love the sarcastic comments
How has the semaglutide been for alcohol?
No idea, I don’t drink
@@MarkLewisfitness Good man. Me neither - for the last 40 days, at least. What's different this time is that I didn't set a goal, I just stopped.
When did you give it up? Are you gonna do a video on it?
