I like Matthew's character. A writer, a misfit, sensitive. I never imagined before that the writer of a gospel would be so human, and lovable. Great creation!! Congrats Dallas . And God, Jesus, never cease to amaze me!☺️❤️👍
Here we can see the turmoil of questioning, indecision, doubt and even fear in the disciples as they react so differently to the challenging situations. Big James sums it up perfectly. The scene with Matthew & Simon finding Mary is beautifully touching. 👍
Now really... think of the dynamics that went on with Simon, Matthew, and Mary there. Simon resents Matthew. Matthew has found a fond affection for Mary, I think, that is actually endearing him to Simon - somewhat - for the first time. Mary, is being re-redeemed by Matthew's compassion (THIS... is Kingdom). Even while Matthew is being the "hands and feet" of Jesus in that situation, SImon is letting go of bitterness and unforgiveness, and Mary is discovering family. All of this is orchestrated by Jesus, who could have simply come and found Mary Himself.
The moment when Simon and Matthew have to enter the bar helps give a step back and see why the two were meant to go. Matthew has the newborn christian mentality that can be intimidated by shady places and Simon is there as the older brother who can hold his own. Together they were made to help spoon her back out.
I got from this episode that Jesus was not worried about Mary only because he knew Mary was like the prodigal son. He had to let her work/walk thru her struggle. I have to keep telling myself when I feel separated from God. He vowed "I" will NEVER leave you nor forsake you. Notice He said "I" will never .... Not "YOU"... his promise has nothing to do with my actions. "He" will Never leave or forsake US!
What broke my heart about this episode was the widespread outrageous controversy that sprung up from Mary Magdalene’s relapsing into alcoholism and gambling. Many people who saw this episode were shouting “THAT’S NOT BIBLICAL!!!” Or, “Jesus cleansed Mary of her old life, there’s no way she should fall back into her old sin!!!” Here’s the thing, even though we are made new creatures in Christ after He cleanses us and gives us hearts of flesh, that doesn’t mean we are no longer susceptible to temptation and sin. It also doesn’t mean we are now made perfect as Jesus was perfect. If that were true, we wouldn’t need a savior to begin with. Our conversion means we are now justified by grace through faith. And His blood pays the debt of our transgression against God. Many of the greatest heroes of faith were as susceptible to sin as we are. From Moses, to David, to Solomon, to Peter, and even the Apostle Paul. What I think is beautiful about this episode is that Mary was broken over her sin, and she knows she needs forgiveness, even though she feels unworthy of it. That is evidence to me that she was truly a daughter of God. Why? Because unsaved people don’t feel remorse for their sin. They celebrate it. We must always remember that our Lord is absolute in His mercy and love. And He is undyingly faithful to His children. As the Apostle Paul says, “He who began a good work in you will finish it.”
Fear and shame is the devil’s weapon!! It was so loving of Jesus to be honest with Mary but forgiving her and hugging her which had to be so impactful and a relief to Mary. Jesus forgave my slipping and then forgave me when I asked him to, again so loving, not lustful as some want to believe but pure love that only can come from Our loving Father in heaven!
Thanks for your commentary and teaching. It really helped my soul to face certain sins in my life that I was worthy to be in God's presence. But learning through Jesus Christ in this story that I have a place with Him. He still loves me and He knows I can do better than before.
Thank you for this comment, Regina. Jesus came to remove the sin barrier so that we would all be able to know the Father. He did it. We all sin, but where sin abounds, grace super-abounds!
Just watched this commentary and enjoyed it thanks. Mary in the chosen is a brilliant story so far. We all want to be better versions of ourselves and there is no better 'how to' than scripture. I identify with Mary with how many times I have let fear and doubt overshadow the gifts I have received from the creator and made excuses and have returned to old habits. The chosen to me has provided an opportunity to soul search, learn from mistakes and definitely read more of the word of God. I need season 3! love it.
And to think... there are supposed "Christians" out there who think this is a demonic show... What you just wrote is proof that this project bears good fruit.
Thanks Pastor for sharing your views part 1& 2 and further knowledge on the scriptures and #thechosen show creative writing and terrific actors, background cast and crew, this particular episode with Mary and her struggle, fall and return, is so moving! So much going on with it, the leaders behind scene and news of John the Baptist etc., and you help us see it in another light more detail by sharing your insights! I watched a-lot of your reviews tonight too many to comment! God bless you and us all as we dig deeper into Bible studies around these scenes!!
Such intense moments in this part of the episode. Loved the tenderness as well as strength shown by Matthew. Simon Peter may have also heard a sort of apology from Matthew as he spoke to Mary. On a side note, please don't worry about the length of your commentary. Jesus has faith in you.....need I say more. I truly believe the Holy Spirit speaks through your commentary and thus speaks to us and helps us look at things from a different, or sometimes same, perspective. Looking forward to finishing Season 2 with you. Thanks for all you do!
re: the money that gets left behind... I always have a mild "freakout" when I'm watching shows where the money gets lost or stolen or forgotten etc... recently watched a movie where a bag load of cash gets thrown on a fire on the principle that it's "blood money"... OoF! But it's a lesson to me I guess, in that "where do I put my faith, in money or God... in provision or the Provider?" I can often try to justify or spiritualise it, but God doesn't Need anything, just our hearts, & He wants that for us too, that all we rely on is His Heart & everything we need, we find in His Heart, even the material things. Guess that's why Jesus sent His disciples out without any supplies or resources... God wanting to prove Himself faithful by caring for them, against all worldly odds.
I'm enjoying watching it with your background comments to stretch it out, it means we can take more time to savour the story and the viewing experience at our leisure. It's helping me appreciate many of subtleties in the writing, acting, and directing that I missed the first time through. Thank you Pastor Steve (is it Steve?)
Very interesting. I understand now.!!why we go in and out in depression. well i truly think.we hold back in our pray.knowing that's the power.we hold back.i reality to that.since i was a young child.i always lost myself.and seeing this now....i don't understand??(WHY I HOLD BACK IN MY PRAYERS. 😓😔😓being raised my mom Christian family i was always.(hiding).
At the 3:50 mark David mentioned the "pacu ach nefesh(sp?)" when asking for the Bread of the Presence. In Jewish tradition, that was the idea that the saving of a life made it acceptable to break another commandment because the saving of a life (or multiple lives) was always the greater commandment.
When Jesus healed Mary by casting out the 7 demons, when they embraced it was an upper body embrace...I saw that as that, since there was no witness, it was to keep the embrace from being misinterpreted. As Mary said to John in Sons Of Thunder, about how she first met Jesus "in the tavern and He touched her hand" and she said to John that he might not write that, as it might be misunderstood. When she came back to camp with Simon and Matthew, and then escorted into Jesus' tent by Mother Mary, when forgiven, Jesus and Mary had a full body embrace, this time witnessed as to be not misunderstood. Skillful directing and acting. With modern interruptions of the relationship (sexual) between Jesus and Mary Madeleine, Dallas Jenkins and co-writers show that they do not ascribe to that belief. Thank you for your commentaries, Pastor Steve.
As a matter of fact there is no hugs between any woman and Jesus. The women in the Gospels usually bowed down to him , do not hug him or tried to embrace him. Jesus touching Mary Magdalene hand in a tavern is totally un biblical. A lot of Mary Magdalene/Jesus relationship themes here. She was just a woman, a disciple...not a special friend or companion of Jesus. There is no embrace between Jesus and Mary Magdalene in the Gospels. She tried to worship him outside the Tomb like her God, rabbi and savior not to hug him like a friend.
It’s interesting that in the beginning scene, there is the sacred bread of the presence, and we have the bread, the body of Christ, the sacred real presence.

Thank you Anne - I really appreciate your feedback on it. Some people complain because they just want to watch the vids with no commentary. Blows my mind!
Is it just me ? Mary was picking fruit in the same place they are camped at So why didn't they go get those instead of searching so hard for other things to eat?
She sees the men and realizes she should be with her new brothers as she looks around and I believe it brings her memory of when she was with her Father it was enough to make her leave and of course she realizes that she is unsafe there.
just a thought on "Nob" re the "place of Fruit" & the Presence of Bread... sounds like Communion to me: which, in relation to communion / fellowship / relationship with the Father (which we have through Christ's Body & Blood), is a prime target of the enemy? ooh, Christ also being our FirstFruits, what we as the born again believer Offer up in Spirit & Truth of His Perfect Work - all of Him, none of us ("our handiwork")?
Oh my heck! I am late to this party, but have enjoyed it up to season 2 ep 6. Are we going to have to have Steve's comments sprinkled through all the rest of the episodes and taking up most of the time? If so, I'm done with this!

I love how Matthew is changing, he didn’t even care that he was dirty and helped Mary and showed kindness towards her, so powerful!!
Totally agree with you Teresa!

You're right about fear and shame. It's like a bad costume he dresses us with and tries to convince us that's what we really look like.
I love the look in his eyes as he answers Jesus and laughs.
