The reason that Duck Hunt and Rosalina worked in Smash 3DS but the Ice Climbers wouldn't is because Duck Hunt is a single character with a multi-part model, and Rosalina is a character with a satellite/puppet object; they aren't multiple fighters any more than Peach is just because her neutral B is pulling out a Toad to use as a shield. Ice Climber meanwhile is a full copy of the fighter running simultaneously and reacting to your controls with different timing. It literally is more to implement, from a programming perspective, and takes up more hardware resources to run.
@@Jacks_game_room The reason Ice Climbers were added to Smash, is because Kenji Miki the director of Ice Climbers was involved in Smash Melee, so it makes sense. I had a concept for a ice climber game being like chained together but much more polished and kid friendly with an emphasis on exploring a big mountain with constant progress. Or it would be cool to see in be like the game "A short hike"
There is an indie game called bread and fred that is about two penguins that have to climb a mountain and they are tied to each other with a rope and each penguin is controlled by a different player I think it is a good idea to put in an ice climbers game.
I genuinely do think this is one of those games folks at Nintendo actively wanna keep under the "retro/NES/FC" corner of people's brains for whatever reason. It's something I've been thinking for a while myself, but like you said the potential for what a new title could be is very wide. They can just invent a whole new genre of video game just for the Ice Climbers focused on vertical puzzle platforming or something, in the like, close to 40 years that game came out there's so much they can add to the original style to keep up their "gotta innovate" philosophy. But looking at Kid Icarus Uprising as an example, it is telling of the mindset in these cases. That game pretty much only exists cause Sakurai specifically wanted to use Pit in something after his brawl redesign and just so happened to be tasked with making an action game around the time iirc. So even that beloved title that turned Kid Icarus into a cult classic for a new generation of fans, owes its existence pretty much to the fact that one guy with clout and connections to Nintendo thought Pit looked cool. Otherwise itd be in the ice climbers boat right now. But even then before Brawl it had 2 games...
Ice Climber would be an absolute classic if jumping wasn't horrendous, probably not on the level of Pac-Man but perhaps Bubble Bobble or Blaster Master. A new entry might be fun but I don't know, sometimes things are more fun because they're of a particular era. Also I's say Hudson Soft was most known for Bomberman, but for a fellow Earthbound fan Mario Party is a decent choice.
To be fair, the Duck is just a glorified Master Sword, its always stuck with the Dog and can't get separated from him no matter what, unlike Nana who has her very own AI that follows Popo around and fights alongside or independently from him depending on the situation called for. Same thing with Luma, like the Pikmin with Olimar, its just a glorified ammo with eyes for Rosalina. It would be nice to see a new Ice climber game, but hey, so would a new Balloon Fight (That one Wario Ware Smooth Moves microgame being probably the closest thing to a new Balloon fight at the time), Duck Hunt and other NES revivals. But I guess that will all depend if some smaller dev is interested in pitching the idea to Nintendo and if they themselves are interested in greenlighting the idea.
I love how this video both explains that we need a new Ice Climbers game (probably gonna be Ice Climbers 99 tbh) _and_ the potential idea of adding the Balloon Fighter or Excitebike guy to Smash 😂
The closest thing I can think of off the top of my head to Ice Climbers having a modern game are the vanity sets in Terraria that pay tribute to Popo and Nana respectively.
Sakurai needs to do something with Ice Climbers like he did with Kid Icicrus. Pit was barely a nobody until Kid Icicrus Uprising came out. The GameBoy one was good too but Pit didn't have a game for like maybe 20 years Also, my first exposure to Pikmin was Luigi's Mansion
You forgot about one spin-off. There WAS a Game & Watch game called Climber; which was released on the Game & Watch Crystal Screen and Wide Screen series of handhelds.
The duos that were in Smash 3ds were actually not as hard as the ice climbers to implement, Luma works more as a weapon code-wise, the Duck is attached to the Dog so they are both the same model and a single entity, and Olimar's Pikmin are also just weapons code-wise, meanwhile the Ice Climbers basically summon an entirely new player for the secondary climber, making them 2 characters code-wise They just could't make the 3DS handle 8 player Smash before the game shipped, though I think it can handle 6 player smash if Multi Man is anything to go by
Personally, I want Ice Climbers back myself, but I hope to god it's not a 3D open world game like all the Switch era Nintendo fans keep claiming it should be. It wouldn't even be Ice Climber anymore. It would just be oscarbait with an Ice Climber skin. Kid Icarus Uprising's changes made sense because they took advantage of Pit being an angel with the flight sections (all while still keeping it a part of the lore that he CAN'T fly without Palutena's help), and used Pit's only method of attack in the original (his arrows) to make it work as a sort of 3D SHMUP. It took the series 3D but didn't take the series' identity away entirely. When it comes to Ice Climber revivals, I think they should handle it similarly to a little known Touhou fan game called Cirno Climber. The game adapts Ice Climber's very gameplay foundation but adds improvements like 4 players, and I liked how breaking as many blocks as possible would net the player 1-ups which added a high risk high reward element to the game. Despite being super faithful even to some of the original game's faults, I found it to be really fun. Even if we get a revival that changes a lot, I think verticality (because they're mountain climbers) and multiplayer (because Smash Bros. markets them as a duo) are things that must remain constant, and as a result I think it should be a linear experience. I personally believe verticality works better in a 2D space than in 3D, but I wouldn't mind the latter if it's done well.

Because KIU started out as just a game sakurai was coming up with, focusing on land battles and sky battles. Kid Icarus just happened to be a good fit so he went with it, which was partially influenced from pits popularity in Smash. It was a one off idea he had using a legacy IP which is why it never kicked up a series. Can't really call the potential wasted if there isn't really any there to begin with 😂. Kid Icarus was given a new game because it just so happened to meet the requirements Sakurai was looking for when thinking of a game to make (land and aerial combat) and in general, they had a lot more to work with since the game was based on Greek mythology. With Ice Climber there really isn't a niche it fills that hasn't been done by Nintendo already. With that being said tho, I would want a new Ice Climber game. Popo and Nana having actual personalities and a dynamic with one another would be a joy to see.
The original Kid Icarus was one of Sakurai's favorites when he was much younger and always held a great place in his heart, which is also why Pit got such a drastic redesign for Brawl, and the investment in that redesign was likely involved in getting Uprising greenlit, showing passion (and proven competence via Smash Bros. and Kirby sales figures) behind the developers.
I wish Smash Bros was the marketing powerhouse for characters fans seem to think it is, but a good chunk of Smash's roster actually does sit there doing nothing after getting in. I think Pit is the exception rather than the rule because Sakurai was the one who developed Kid Icarus. If I remember right, he was considering Star Fox before settling on Kid Icarus, which you can kind of see how Uprising feels like a Star Fox game with real time on rails flying sections while the characters talk to you. I actually don't think characters in Smash actually become more popular overnight like this video says, if anything, I see more angry reactions to Smash Bros characters getting revealed when fans don't know who they are, and tend to hold grudges against them for it. There's exceptions, yeah, but I don't think that many people are actually clamoring for a new Ice Climber any more than they are asking for a new Duck Hunt. Personally, I'm a Nintendo fanboy, I'd love to see Ice Climbers get revived, but I've seen enough franchises get added to Smash, only for there to not be much increase in the activity of said franchise, to really have much faith in it's power as an advertisement, especially with first party games.
