1:31 look how low Earnhardt sat in his cars. Looked bad ass. He made his own seats. Crazy how the seats were so open, they could move their arms freely. That was a great time in NASCAR but we can never go back, we needed safety. Earnhardt's death the real reason for all the safety. In a month I would've been 5 years old at the time of this race. I remember all these races, my dad was die hard Earnhardt fan. R.i.p Dad

He sat lower in the seat than anyone else. He also wore his belts loose. No wonder he had those injuries in 1996 and in 1998 at Talladega. As much as Dale would have hated it, it would have saved his life and maybe he could have got that eighth championship and maybe get his son one too.

That was a wicked hit by Nadeau. Mike Skinner had a lot of fiery crashes in that Lowe’s car too.

Kenny Irwin was the Pole Sitter for the 1999 Southern 500. When they ran the 2000 Southern 500, Kenny was no longer with us. Also Dale Earnhardt, John Andretti and Bobby Hamilton are no longer with us anymore.

You realize that Darlington has about 5,000 more seats now than in 1999, and they’ve sold the southern 500 out the last 3 years?
The peak of the sport was the late 90’s/early 2000’s and before the internet age. Don’t hate on what today has. They are getting ratings and fans back in large droves and just signed a $7 billion tv deal.

its weird to look back and now how much nascar has changed saftly wise and racing back to the line was not safe i wonder y they never figured out to freeze the field was safer back then nascar at this time didnt care much abt safely until it took dale sr life if safely was more involved alot then dale sr be live this day retired

I havent watched a full race in like 6 or 7 years but with all stages and cautions it would drive me nuts. I didn't like it when they ended racing back to the caution and they started giving laps back for no reason

@sevendst19 I was a few years behind you. It was the stage racing that finally did me in, after suffering through the "chase" for more than a decade. From 2004 on, I didn't reallly care about who won the championship or how. I was in it for the individual races. I understood and liked the lucky dog rule. It gave you a chance to race back onto the lead lap a lot safer than the previous way (under green instead of under yellow).
