IDK. How would any of us pretend we "understand" a 19th century novelist? Bronte's work is still debated. Yeesh. It's a brilliant piece that, in my opinion, captures the sweep of the moors and the roller coaster of emotions the story takes one through.
Rudy Flower I also think that Feinnes is the only actor to be able to capture the real Heathcliffe. We just got Netflix, which is why I watched it again the other night for the first time since its release, and now I'm going to read it, again! :-))
Tim Fouraker All of our lives of watching and reading this classic but, I could never find that dark intensity described of Heathcliff with the Laurence Olivier version, infact, I feel he's quite wooden in it. I also like the 1970 version with Timothy Dalton but, this Ralph Fiennes/Juliet Binoche is defo my favourite.
Couldn't agree more, one of my favourites! Fiennes was brilliant, Binoche a little wooden in parts, but still good. His pain from losing her is so convincing, that my throat tightens every time I see it! The scene where he breaks in to see her on her death bed, then later on in her coffin...oh man!
If anyone here ever has the chance to visit West Yorkshire, especially if you are a Wuthering Heights fan, please do so. It is one of the most amazing places, and incredibly atmospheric. I had the pleasure of visiting not long after watching this film, and the music was in my mind all the time!!
Don't visit the UK... its NOT safe, especially for Americans who believe in free speech. Yorkshire is a filthy cesspool... with its western culture largely washed out.
Yes, the cross moorland walk from Haworth to the Top Withens ruin is absolutely scenic and atmospheric; catch it in poor weather and it will take you straight back to pages of Wuthering Heights . . guaranteed.
So dramatic, so romantic, so dark.. the music is spot on. This movie has the best Heathcliff. The music made an impact and is the reason why this movie stayed hunting my soul for years.
Rip Ryuichi Sakamoto, this was the first composition i heard from him. So magical and haunted like the movie. His music will live until humankind cease to exist on earth.
The first time I listened the music of Mr. Sakamoto was in the film Wuthering Heights, I was a girl who hadn't read the book, and barely understood the plot or story of the film, but this music, it haunted me well past the ending of the film. I felt it in my heart, in my soul, and it never leave me. Years later I became an admirer of Mr. Sakamoto's work solo and with YMO , and discovered many great artists that admired him as well. I'll be forever thankful for the magic and beauty he gifted us. Thank you, Maestro.
I read the book and then found the movie and it changed life, in 1995. As a musician the music haunted me too. Found out a few years later who the composer was, as I went on to study music for my degree. Sakamoto was a genius at emotive film music, and a genius at piano compositions. The music world is at a loss now he is gone.
Raw, dark, cruel. That's why I love this. Beautiful. My friend asked me what it is I love about Wuthering Heights, because the characters are problematic. They definitely are. But instead of problematic I like the term conflicted much better. Cathy was very egoistic, but she still loved Heathcliff. Heathcliff was shaped by the things people did to him and he was cruel, very cruel, but he still loved Cathy. Their love for each other is what makes them so conflicted, but Cathy decides to act rather on her own comfort than on her feelings which destroys Heathcliff, because he would entirely give into Cathy. They are both miserable, but they are just human. They are no white nor black. Grey characters in their truest form. Love it.
In context - The book was writen in a time were women were "advised"/Forced to marry wisely (for comfort and provision for future offspring). They could not take loans and buy properties in their own name. They relied on marriage and inheritance for support. They were not permitted to have personal choice or marry just for love. Thus (being poor)Heathcliff goes away to make his fortune. But on his return " The man from Gimmerton". Is too late. @nil. Cathy was far from egoistic You are viewing the story through 21st century eyes.

I really love the way the flute is played, really dramatic and deep, almost like crying loud. Seems to be a perfect allusion to sadness and loneliness.
The scene when Heatcliff breaks into the Chapel where lies the body of Catherine, he grabs her lifeless body, cries and the beautiful song becomes dramatically stronger is to break anyone's heart. 💔
In a world of unbelievable evil as we have today, beauty in music like this is vital to restore our souls, at least for a few precious wonderful minutes.
One of the most hauntingly beautiful soundtracks of all time!! Many film themes are beautiful, but after a day you forget them. This one stayed in my mind for weeks after....

Its just magic beyond every expression. Its as if I lived the story myself that time ago ever in my past life. I identify myself with this music.
This is the most unforgettable theme music to me.... the first 90 seconds especially is perfection, and feels like it draws out the whole landscape of Wuthering Heights. This movie is the best version in my view.
So sad to hear that he passed away...a movie wouldn't be nothing without a good soundtrack and when it captures the essence of the whole story it remains immortal forever. And that's exactly what he did for this adaptation. Thank you forever for such a masterpiece 💔
He WAS the best in my opinion. It's actually a very hard part to play, as Heathcliff is such a complex mess of emotions...rage, bitterness, passion, anguish and undying adoration....but Ralph got every facet of him perfectly. He was brilliant, and I agree 100% with a reviewer who said he didn't so much as play him, as inhabit him. Hell of a performance.
@@janesgems7 I agree with you. Taking aside that only the last movie made justice to Heathcliff's ethic background it's indeed Ralph Fiennes performance the most accurate to what I imagined Heathcliff to be while reading the book (haunted, raw, bitter at the world and the circumstances he was brought on, cruel and visceral) A really deep and powerful character that Ralph brought to life so amazingly.
After reading the book, which is such a masterpiece, you don't get to experience the same intensity with any of its adaptations, but I must say that I loved this movie and the soundtrack is magnificent. Cathy and Heathcliff will always be my favorite characters in fiction, wuthering heights is like looking inside myself, bless Emily brönte.
The music made this movie ... IT GAVE THE AUDIENCE THE TRUE ELEMENTS THAT DROVE THE NOVEL ITSELF INTO BEING WHAT IT HAS BECOME TODAY ON SCREEN...AFTER WATCHING THIS VERSION, I HAVE LIVED WITH THE CHARACTERS IN MEMORY THROUGH THE HAUNTING STRAINS OF RYUICHI'S JAPANESE FLUTE, AND THE DEEP MELODY OF THE VIOLINS FUELING THE ENTIRE SCORE ON SCALES OF FOREBODING CADENCE....In my opinion it's the most wonderfully chosen score for this movie...!!!
Beautiful, haunting music. The film is the best adaptation to the book I have seen and perfectly cast but I am still yet to see one that is true to the original dark, brooding book which is my all-time favourite .
Thank you so much for posting this. This music has been deeply ingrained in my soul ever since I saw this movie the first time in 1995. I was obsessed with this song. I remember how many emotions this music made me feel. And it still has that power. It's truly brilliant, and perfect for this movie.
This music score to this gorgeous movie will always be my favorite Ralph Fiennes brings such a passionate, intensity, to this role , you can almost hear his heart break when he holds a dead Kathy in his arms to say goodbye, the beautiful Juliette Binoche is breathtaking as Kathy. The pair are complete in telling this heart breaking story of 2 star crossed lovers , who in this life will never be, but in the next life will be together forever. The script is so very close to the book, how did a 32 yr old young girl write such a intense love story with the fact she herself was never in love , it’s the magic of the Bronte sisters , who didn’t get to live long lives but left a legacy of profound story telling that haunts to this very day.
The use of flutes to mimic the wind is just genius. There's a number of beautiful japanese takes on uk artworks. The remains of the day is one for example. This is another. If I remember correctly there's a japanese version of wuthering heights somewhere, set in medieval japan.
This is THE best version of this story. I will due on this hill arguing it. Ralph's beautiful green eyes are as hypnotic as the score. 💚 I love that my dad introduced this to me.

Rip Sakamoto your music for me never die change my life deeply
the drama the fear the sadness and the music makes it
I just watched this movie and I can't get this song out of my head. I don't really want it to leave
Me also...I'm trap...
ME TOO
Maria Teresa Ribera Ovalle We now are trap together here...
GRANDE DRAMA..........UMA BELA HISTÓRIA DE AMOR..........MÚSICA MAGNIFICA
É como se cada sentimento da história estivesse sendo expressado nessa música... ela fala por si.
I also like Wuthering Heights and the piano version, but this main theme makes me cry. Beautiful.
'How can I be this cruel? I have been taught...by masters' - Catherine Sloper, in The Heiress. Which also sums up Heathcliff.
The musician playing the haunting pipes is Davy Spillane.
Perhaps the most beautiful song I've ever heard Takes me there .
She´s still there in the wind
Indeed .
Even the air at night was you...
This song is burned into my brain.
idli. Me too .....
@@NourIreksousi - every now and then this music pops into my head. That's what brought me here tonight....I had to hear it. This one and the theme from "The Red Violin"...omg.
Me too
I visited the West Yorkshire moors for the first time recently...and this music was going through my head all the time. I have been back several times, and will again. I can almost see these versions of Heathcliff and Cathy there.
RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto - you're missed already.
Hello Mr. Menendez. I totally agree. Wonderful piece of art.
誰かを猛烈に好きになったとき
どんなに何もかも投げ出して相手の許に行きたくても
どうしても状況が許してくれないことがある。
これは永遠の命題なのだろうか。。。
A truly beautiful piece of music!
Wow! This is gorgeous! Gives me goosebumps.
RIP Ryuichi. Thankyou for all the beautiful music you gave to the world. Thankful I got to watch you live at the Southbank centre some 12yrs ago.
Takes me to another place. Stirs my inner spirit. Deepens my romantic heart
Saw the movie years ago, and this theme has stayed with me ever since. Haunting and beautiful - shame that the soundtrack is so hard to find on CD.
I bought it once 25 years ago on eBay auction and it was a hard win even then! Others wanted it.
The music is so captivating, gives me goosebump everytime I hear this.perfect casting and excellent version
