Love this game, it's partially responsible for my addiction to RPG's, that and Final Fantasy hooked me. Fun games, I'm glad we got 4 on the NES, I was always disappointed we never got another FF on the NES back then.
Playing the second and third FF and the fifth and sixth DW completed my childhood a quarter century on from it. DW5 was like missing an FF5 or 6, it's like a hole was filled completing that one in particular. I think I heard that only 40,000 copies of DQ4 (I think it was) even sold ... I'm not sure that covered all of the video stores, more or less budding D&D nerds.
There was a very popular rumor at the time that answering yes to Dragonlord not only killed you, but would erase your game as well. I believe it was unfounded, but i had a friend ages ago who swore that it happened to him.
@@Nobleshield I thought the same thing and made a comment about it. Didn't happen to me, but I first thought it deleted my entire profile and panicked. I do know that several NES cartridges had hidden updates to correct bugs, etc, upon every batch release. Maybe your friend had a very early version of the cartridge if he's saying the truth.
"May I travel as thy companion?" "Nooooo.." "But thou must!" "Hey listen... You just got kidnapped by a **cking dragon... And it wasn't even like a red dragon, it was like a green dragon... You think you're going to survive out there with me when you can't even handle a green dragon?" "Oh... I didn't mean "companion" like.... Not like fighting and stuff.. I meant it like..." *whispers* "I'm so happy!!!"
I was wondering this myself and after about an hour of searching, I have absolutely no idea. There's quite a few different versions of the game, MSX, PC-9801, Super Famicom, Game Boy Color, mobile phones for example, none of them look like this however. While searching I came across another video with these graphics: ruclips.net/video/5SsFBUvs-nY/видео.html I was thinking maybe it was some sort of beta version, but tcrf.net/Dragon_Warrior got nothin'. Maybe it's a bootleg with inexplicably minor changes? Couldn't find a graphic romhack either. Unless the person who made the video chimes in I guess It'll remain a mystery.
The aspect ratio is off on this video. Everything is skewed a bit. It's just has the greatest effect on the trees. It's also possible you played a different port. This is the NES version. There could also be a few variations due to the emulator.
@@perezfinichames I don't think that's it. Emulator smoothing or aspect ratio could explain some of this, but the doors have an entirely different texture; wood rather than plain gray. You can see it at 0:30. My bet is this is some kind of graphical hack; they're around, if you know where to look for them.
thanks for this! I played this game years ago with my step brother. I worked so hard playing, and my stupid step brother finished the game without me! I never knew what happened at the end!
There’s one more ending. You can rescue the Princess after you have defeated the Dragon Lord, also. You just don’t fight the dragon. In the newer versions, you can go to Damdora (Hauksness) after the Dragon Lord is defeated and see the ghost of Galen (Garin, they changed a lot of names in the new versions).
Wait, you’re saying the dragon up and disappears when the Dragon Lord is defeated without rescuing the princess first? I thought she would be stuck in the cave with the dragon as company if you never rescue her.
In the Game Boy remake, Dragonlord will actually comment on you carrying the princess with you if you bring her to the fight. I love how such a simple game is able to take so many things into account...too bad the princess won't take "no" for an answer if you don't instantly fall in love with her. Would be nicer if that choice was honored too - that and getting the option to say "yes" to taking over Tantegel instead of sauntering off to found your own kingdom.
I named my hero Guts after Berserk the anime; if I ever play the entire game just to get the bad ending I’ll name him Griffith after the series’ villain
In the android version they made a couple changes that I like. If you accept the Dragonlord's offer, he asks that you offer your sword as a sign of peace. If you have any of the store bought swords he comments about how foolish you would be trying to fight him with it. You also wake up in an inn where the innkeeper comments about you tossing and turning in your sleep. Also, if you bring Gwalin with you, he comments that he is pleased that you brought a tribute. If you beat him and return to the king with her, a guard will rush to you and take her to her quarters
Saying yes to the dragon lord is more of a death state than an ending. The only thing that actually changes in the ending is whether or not the princess was rescued.
It would've been very interesting if the player had his entire data deleted if he accepted the Dragon Lord's offer. Starting over would be the Ultimate Punishment for accepting Evil instead of the minor hassle of a simple freezing. I really wonder how that would've turned out in the game's legacy decades later from what Gamers would've said about this.
i think im the only one There's a bug on the Reset button 1% to happen 3:50 that dragon appears on Black Screen, i play this when i have 12 years or 11
always wondered what happened if you accepted the dragon lord's request. its such a pain to even get to him, glad i rejected it. without save states, I'd flip the fuck out
oh man that surprise ending is great. is that implying u are the dragon lord? anyway, u "missed" another ending- saying yes to joining the dragon lord with u carrying the princess, but nice video
Louie Salerno not really a ending, in the original Japanese game what happens is after taking the Dragonlords offer you get the bit about resting and so on and you get a password as the original Japanese version used a password system and when you start your game up with that password you lose everything your level 1 and all gear and money is gone. But since the US version didn't have a password system, you just get a soft locked game and not the joke
When we do the bad ending we have Dragon Quest builders indeed after this Lorddragon destroy the world under sprite ténèbres on the world like in Dragon Quest Builder Dragon Quest Builder personne say the hero accept
I love the sprite of the hero carrying the princess. Surprisingly detailed for the available pixels/resolution.
Didn’t think it was possible back then both with hardware and sprite limitation.
In the SNes version and later, if you accept Dragonlord's offer, you wake up at the inn, revealing it to have been a nightmare.
The SNES versions are best, well at least for I-III. IV-VI are best on DS. IMO anyway.
I know I am quite off topic but does anybody know of a good site to watch new tv shows online?
@Turner Corey Flixportal xD
@Avery Iker thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it !!
@Turner Corey glad I could help :)
For some reason, the game freezing and screen going red when you agree with splitting the world gave me the creeps as a kid. Not quite sure why.
Same, I felt like I was cursed in real life lol
@@Kernel-56 It gave me the creeps and panic because I honestly first thought I had my entire data deleted.

why are the trees different from my game?

Maybe it's an English patch of the Japanese version. It's my understanding that there were heavy graphical upgrades when localized.
The aspect ratio is off on this video. Everything is skewed a bit. It's just has the greatest effect on the trees. It's also possible you played a different port. This is the NES version. There could also be a few variations due to the emulator.
It's definitely not the Japanese version. Your character doesn't turn in that version. He just stares up at you, even when you are moving.

I’m glad even when I first faced the Dragonlord (age 10,) I knew it was a bad idea to join forces with a dragon lol.

I saved the princess after defeating the Dragon Lord. I took her to every INN in the game.😅
That made me lol!
If you stay at the inn with the princess, the innkeeper says something different in the morning. Thou had a good rest I hope or something like that.
@@malroth801 Maybe in the Japanese version there's some interesting dialogues.
I didn’t save the princess at all. Hope she’s happy in the cave with the dragon.
I remember when I said yes to the dragon lord then I remembered that I forgot to save. Boy was I pissed.

I never thought about taking the Princess to the dragonlord before. I did do it without the princess at least once so many years ago, however.
What if you tell the princess no?
Oh wait. It’s the “But thou must” meme.
Can you show us what happens when you win the game while cursed?

What happens when you say no to the princess when she asks if she can join you?
Guy Techie i think she will keep asking until you say yes.
but thou must!
but thou must!
but thou must!
and then it plays the most annoying tune when you say yes. lol I say let her get eaten by the dragon. I know where the damn token is anyhow.
Saying yes to the dragon lord is more of a death state than an ending. The only thing that actually changes in the ending is whether or not the princess was rescued.
I'd argue it's a legitimate alternate ending simply because the dragonquest builders 1 storyline is based on it
@@LaSevillana Nice game, to base it off the hero failing in the previous one.
After you defeat dracolord is the princess still at Cave? And the dragon that guarded still there?

I've never completed it that way but I'm fairly sure.
Probably, but I can beat this game in my sleep, and I don’t want to try.
What happens if you still have Gwaelin and then say yes to the Dragonlord??
Same thing, no dialogue change, she just suddenly disappears from your arms. Maybe the dragonlord ate her...

A great classic and I will have to try the carry the princess alternative play through. Does she take up an item you can carry space?
She does not, but if you ever talk to the king or die, she becomes rescued and she leaves your arms.
@@AkaiAzul Thank you.
What happens if you refuse to take the princess with you? 5th ending?
She replies with: "But thou must!" And re asks you the question endlessly until you say yes, like a creepy rapist or something!
You can’t. I tried that when I was a kid playing this back in the late 80’s 🤣
BUT THOU MUST
What happens if you don't let the princess come with you on your journey?
“But thou must!”
I think in the snes remake you just get sent back to the castle if you take the Dragonlord's offer.
My brother had done the Pro-Princess Ending before my 9-years-old eyes, 9 years ago.
There are 8 endings actually if you played dragon quest..and as a game programer i created my own R rated endings too 😈
LOL, the final image x'DDDD
But why aren't spikes on the castle in the 4th possible ending?
what did you mean?
Heh @ the last screen shot

How about the pro princess but dragon warrior accepts bosses purposal ending. Heheh, the princess fights on for him and becomes queen.
The artbox is crap but still memorable.
Ending 1: good ending
Ending 2: bad ending
Ending 3: based ending
Ending 4: what?
but can't u make a 5th.... take the Princess with to beat the Dragon Lord and then accepting his1 terms with her in your arms? Lol....
That kind of run is called "threesome%".
3rd Option Leave the Princess to die: But Thou Must, I THINK NOT :)
