I've been a karateka over 50 yrs. Although I taught Shotokan for many yrs I was taught this version of sanchin by my Shotokan Sensei. This is by far the best explanation and breakdown I've ever seen. Sometimes an individual who has become what he has practiced can simplify the details and our understanding explodes! Thank You. Great video.

I would also appreciate a video on the breathing patterns of Sanchin Kata done the Uechi way. My background is Kyokushin starting when I was around 22 and just turned 75 last month. Karate is in my blood so bad, but I started having lumbar problems a couple of years after I started. Between 4 lumbar surgeries and many insults putting me on floor for several weeks or more. Then came cervical problems screwing my neck, and right shoulder up. Now I'm deal with 2 numb, asleep feet and legs which has made me loose my balance. I used to go class 2x week and train alone 4-5 days alone. I have basically had to stop my training and I'm really pissed. As far as Sanchin in Kyokushin, we really made unnecessary very loud exhalation which I see as not needed. Also very large circular motions.
I'm really intrigued by all Uechi Ryu Kata and would love to learn some. At present I would like info and demo of Sanchin breathing your way. 1st book and still have by Sensei George Mattson RIP. If you will make a video of Sanchin breathing the Ueichi way with explanation, this 75 yr young Karate-ka would be grateful. Sorry for long winded, do you have a phone were I can speak with you? I would greatly appreciate it so I can pick your brain. ☮️🥋

All of your vivideos are excellent. I wish I could attend your school. I do not understand the purpose for the open hand thrusts. What is the target? Isn't a nukite a weak weapon? I have never thought a spear hand strike had any practical purpose unless it is aimed at a soft target? Thanks.

Do you have bunkai for this one?
I have one bunkai of shuto uke I like to know what you think.
You brush opponent's punch or leadhand with the shuto that go to your neck, the hikite arm grabs lapel of opponent, so now you got opponent's lead arm between your two arms, you pull the lapel with hikite arm as you strike the opponent's neck with your shuto.
This is my outside bunkai of shuto uke, let me know what you think

Thank you for your question sir. I'm not following exactly, but typically, the first section of the strike when one hand is brought over to the other is used to re-direct the opponent's linear-based attack. After the attack is re-directed, the depender's opposite hand would be used to control the limb so that a counter attack could be executed. I believe we're talking about the same thing. The technique is very simple however quite effective. I hope this explanation offers some value.

    • @IbrahimKhalil-bt9yh

@@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody yes that's the force and motion, try even grabbing lapel of opponent and pulling it to your hip and see the response. I hope to see more of those closerange bunkai where you use the hikite on opponent to either control arm or gi, this is what real karate is, look at okinawan close range fighting, in their kakie drill they spar with their eyes closed because they can do anything technique once the handconnect.

Hi Sir. In same approach of yours, I want to share my point of view, in order to feed the work of all people who want to understand and practise authentic Uechi Ryu Karate
1.I think Sanchin aims to teach how produce effective, fast and powerful strike. Why this thought? Sanchin is the first kata and the most important one in a discipline for fight. Old masters said that if you have to practice only one kata, it must be Sanchin. The most important ability in such a discipline is striking. It’s difficult to think that this kata doesn’t teach how strike effectively. Other reason: In fighting discipline, you have to develop your body condition in a way that doesn’t reduce your ability to strike effectively. Other reason: If effective striking is not taught in Sanchin, where is it taught? and where is it taught in a better way than in Sanchin?
2.So the question is how striking is taught in Sanchin. That meets one of the most fundamental question in Karate and Uechi Ryu in particularly: How is power generated? It’s not by rotation of the body like doing in boxing: It never has body rotation in any kata when a strike is thrusted. You mentioned one of the way in the video: Bow principle or Elastic principle. It can be done as well in Sanchin than in other kata. A second way is to use the brief, strong and explosive expiration. Expiration has to be the motor of the movement, not be doing “in parallel” of the movement (i.e. not at the same time without a very important impact of expiration on the movement). Hope to watch other interesting video like this one. BR.

Greeting sir! Thank you very much for your thoughtful and detailed comments, sir. I appreciate your contributions and agree and that thoughtful dialogue, exchange and analysis will contribute to the greater good and further understanding of the art.
Allow me to further clarify my statements. First, it’s my opinion that Sanchin kata keiko will greatly enhance one’s ability to nurture, generate and transfer power, particularly when delivered in the forward direction through linear arm thrusting. I do not believe, however, that this is the only goal of Sanchin training. If the purpose of Sanchin kata were only focused on performing the most powerful thrust possible, a number of modifications could be made throughout the body which would further serve this goal and ultimately increase arm thrusting velocity and the transfer of force.
It’s my belief that the primary goal of Sanchin training is the development of proper body structure, which among many things, also includes effective arm thrusting. It’s interesting to note that many venerated masters in Uechi-ryu, despite being capable of thrusting with tremendous power, intentionally do not use it while practicing Sanchin. This can be seen durning both their more formative years as well as well into their prime. I would also humbly offer other Ryu-ha as examples of this. Goju-ryu, for example, utilizes Sanchin kata for many of the same reasons as Uechi-ka, yet they practice at a much slower pace. I would not suggest that they are any less powerful because of this adaptation, nor for Miyagi Chojun sensei’s decision to change the hands from an open to a closed-fist position.
In terms of the koshi-no-kaiten, many practitioners say that Uechi-ryu does not utilize this principle, and that they never use their hip, however I am not one of them. I believe in using very slight, hip-pulse-rotation to assist in launching linear techniques, and find it to be an incredibly effective method of catapulting a strike forward. Similarly, many Okinawan master whom I've studied with will also tell you that they use this principle, as do many practitioners of southern Chinese systems, like Feeding Crane, who are renowned for their power delivery.
Thank you again for your comments and I look forward to further exchange.

I'm not sure about what you said about power doesn't come from the rotation of the body in Karate.
I'm pretty new to Uechi-Ryu but I did 10 years of Wado-Ryu Karate and many techniques get their power from hips rotation, at least in the kata. It's the same in Shotokan and I believe in most of karate style as well.
What you said is probably true for Uechi-Ryu but not for karate in general.

    • @AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody
      @AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody  3 года назад +1

@@jean4j_, thank you for your comment and contributions. You'll find no disagreement from me regarding the body's ability to generate and deliver rotational force in karate. In sanchin kata practice however, particularly in the Uechi-ryu lineage of Okinwan karate, rotational power and torquing of the hips is something that is extremely subtle and minute. So I agree with you that it can be a very powerful method of generating force, however it's just not something that is encouraged in Sanchin training...especially in Okinawa. Moreover, what you see me doing here, relative to body rotation in this and other videos, might be considered by most Uechi standards to somewhat considerable. But I'm big believer in it so what I do I'm doing by design and very deliberately.
Certainly not the only way up the mountain though sir, as we all know. Good luck with your training and thanks again for your comments.

    • @jean4j_

@@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody Thank you for your response and much thanks for all the good work. I've been watching your videos about Sanchin and Hojo Undo.
The way Uechi seems not using too much hips into the motion is actually very Wing Chun like (which I practiced for a year) and it makes sense given the root of karate.
Like it's the case for Wing Chun, speed is preferred over strength, especially when it comes to self-defense.
That's also why Bruce Lee prefer to have his strongest punch forward.
You're right, I will not discard my previous trainings. Both approach have benefits. Depends on the situation and the range.
