Mini Ninjas is the best 2009 action-adventure game you've never heard of (yes that's a very specific category). Even though it's not an open world RPG, Mini Ninjas is a fun and underrated hidden gem that never got the attention it deserved. Developed by the same studio that made Hitman (IO Interactive), Mini Ninjas carries an uncanny resemblance to one of the most celebrated games of recent times, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I'm not sure if BOTW was inspired by Mini Ninjas, but playing Mini Ninjas in 2022 as a Zelda fan, you will no doubt notice similarities between it and its open world cousin, BOTW. Mini Ninjas carries the same DNA of Breath of the Wild's sprawling open world filled with lush cartoony nature and beautiful landscapes, presents it in a linear fashion but with the same amount of character.

It was kind of a cool reward I just randomly found out one day playing the game on ps3 like 5 years ago lol. Messing around as a samurai is somewhat useless kinda fun, and it’s not really an advantage in the game or whatever, so it’s not giving you a sense of “oh I need to grind this game to get this”, it’s kind of just more a casual side-benefit that adds to the replayability :)

You've made me reconsider a lot of how I thought about design with the "width" perspective. I've found myself gravitating towards implementing a lot of content that falls under that umbrella of "width," and then telling myself to water it down due to impracticality. Maybe something fun, novel, and experimentative is more important sometimes than something explicitly tight and engaging as a function.
This is a really good first impression. I'm looking forwards to what kind of content you'll be putting out in the future.

Remember thinking the demo was packed with content, but it was really just me exploring absolutely everywhere. Was beyond stoked when I finally got the full game on disc. Truly one of my favorite experiences as a kid, let alone video games. Seeing Suzume go down the river in her hat-boat spinning her flute around immediately brought me back to how I would always switch to her at water sections because I thought she was faster? Some of my friend would visit my house to play this game, the moment when we ride the big Koi was the most memorable one for me as a kid, also the moment when we get to play as Tora, such a really good game, I even need to buy the game in a physical store at the time, such a different and relaxing time man.

I am generally not susceptible to nostalgia but this is the one thing that gets me. The charm of the game and it's painting-looking nature, whether it's a lively forest full of life, a grim and dark volcano populated by samurais or a village overflown by the river, it always brought such a peaceful vibe to me

Omg thank you for making this video. I have never once in my life heard anyone talk about this game. It was just a special little thing in my childhood that was mind-blowing and might very well be my intro to RPG/gaming (if you can call it RPG). I haven't thought about the game in maybe 10 years. Wow.

I loved every part of this game when I first played it. The art style's great, the creativity in the usage of the spells is fun, the bosses are more QTE/puzzle based (but it actually works unlike some other games). Also, this is the first I'm hearing of the Koi fish potion too. I'm upset that this masterpiece gets overlooked so much; more people should know about it, so thank you for calling more attention to it!

Great video, it's always nice to see people praise something you enjoy. Also, I'm not sure what station/website the animated series aired on but it was somewhere in France. I know this because I used to be so obsessed with these games that I scrounged for every episode I could find and consumed them entirely through context clues because I don't speak French

The music the vibe the ability for me to actually finish a game as a dumb kid was the most gratifying thing ever, I played it recently and it still holds up and I'm so happy it does. Also I can't believe somebody else actually talked about this game that is remotely big so thank you for doing so!

Dude I literally just remembered this game yesterday and then forgot about it again, and then decided to see if anyone had covered it on RUclips and conveniently this video had came out not too long ago, I appreciate this. I got Mini Ninjas for my PlayStation 3 quite a few years ago probably when I was 9 or 10 in my stocking for Christmas, and me and my brother played this game to oblivion. This is definitely one of the games I most played during my childhood, and I loved it thoroughly. I still remember the first day I played it that morning, i have so many memories of it.
Like, that one sledding level was so hard for me and I had to get my older cousin to beat it for me one day. I remember beating the final boss and getting so much joy out of that. I played the Boss Windy Pants level so much it just made me laugh every time and kid me loved it. I remember trying to fight those dumb monkeys that would turn into samurais and I could never dodge them.
But bro that one cemetery level. I was so scared of the floating skeletons that I legitimately never played it again afterward, and I still haven’t to this day 😂.
It also genuinely boggles my mind at how much I played it, yet how little I actually discovered within the game. I found a lot of the secret areas, but I also never found all the spells and never tried all the crafting stuff all that much, i basically just saved up materials for no reason lol, buying copious amounts of bombs yet never using them.
AND I literally would replay only like 4 levels in the whole game, yet I still never got bored of it. It always felt amazing to try and sneak around, and wall climb and shoot from long distances. All of the levels felt unique to me and it just felt like a full experience despite not being a super long game.
The levels are linear, yet also feel very spacious and most of them are set in the outside, so it makes it feel almost like an open world despite the often clear path ahead. It makes you feel unlimited and free.
A clearly awesome aspect of the game is the story. It’s super simple, but it’s told exceptionally well through every little cutscenes in the game, and ESPECIALLY in those little character introductions. It really pulls you into the world and makes you feel special, and gives a great sense of progression and accomplishment getting through all the levels.
At least, that’s what It felt like back when I played it. I still have it on my PlayStation, and I still have the same save file to go back to if I wanted to lol, but honestly I’d probably start over from scratch and get the full experience again since I really only got to have it once when I first played it. I really wanna set some time in a couple days soon for a special playthrough of this comforting game :)

I played this game every single day. For at least 2 or 3 years. The DSi version, tho. Eventually I got an Xbox 360 and its specific version. It's nice to know other people who also cherished this game on their childhood. Nice video!
