Best frigging live show i ever seen, guy next to me said. Oh he will probably play the death of music. I replied "He probably will never do that" when this started, i bowed down to my neighbour and proclaimed him an shaman
I can't believe I actually was there...so surreal. I'd travelled from abroad to accompany my at the time-boyfriend, and my health was a wreck, could hardly walk up a stair, and feeling generally awful, like I had to shield myself from all noise, light etc. Then, it all lifted like magic as I walked into the Hall and I felt the vibe, and the music started. I don't have enough words to describe his music. But the feeling from it is pure bliss and awesomeness!
B Well welcome to defy land, I'm lucky enough to have been a fan for years now, best moment for me and my son was to see Devin support himself, it was zimmers hole, it was Devin Townsend band then, and then strapping young lad, most amazing crazy night ever, 😈
This is how I always dreamed of these Ocean Machine tracks being played live, one seguing into another seamlessly and along such an enthralling emotional roller coaster ride...
This really is the best three song combo he's done live, I think. There's such an energy about it. It flows effortlessly, one into another, and you sort of 'get' why these songs have to be played back to back. The way the mood starts sad from Funeral and then an angry loneliness in Bastard, then a quiet contemplativeness in DoM. The way the crowd reacts when Death of Music starts is beautiful, you can feel the surprise thick in the air. It's honestly an astounding and moving set.
I come back to DT periodically, and I have obviously commented before....but every time it's like the heavens open up and there you are...floating in acceptance, love and triumph all at the same time......
The only live recording that I personally know of that's as good and crisp as this is Fu Manchu's love album "Go For It... Live!" (It's also one of my favorite recordings in general)
These are absolute MATERPIECES written by a young prodigy. Although they were released in 1997, they PERFECTLY capture the loneliness, death, despair, fear, hopelessness and uncertainty of 2020. I have always loved and related to these songs deeply, but they are ESPECIALLY real and cathartic right now. It's hitting harder than ever. 😢
I think "Death of Music" is legitimately one of my favorite songs ever. I love so much of his stuff (thanks to my husband for turning me onto it!) but Ocean Machine is, by far, my favorite. This section of the set was just incredible.
@@stormangelus6638 I've spent the last 4 years since I wrote this comment listening to Devin and exploring each one of his albums, growing to love them all
I only just found out about Dev about 2 months ago. I've been listening no stop since and discovering the nuances of his talent. Thanks for posting this awesome version. I want to see him live so bad. I would have loved to have seen this line-up. This band seems so tight. I hope he is doing well enough to support himself and family. He deserves a lot more recognition. I was surprised that I had never heard of him because I play guitar and devour so much in music. I was floored to find out about him and sad that so many opportunities were missed for me.
I’ve been a fan of Devy for over a decade now and these three songs mean so much to me. More than any song or piece of music ever has by a long shot. Before this album I didn’t even know music could effect me in such a way. When this album clicks it fucking CLICKS.
The entire concert lasts about three hours. Twenty-four songs. This is the twenty-third. Nevertheless, he sings it with a power, a freshness and a disarming naturalness! Even better than the original of Ocean Machine! He's not human. What a voice!! Incredible, magical.
Today is the day that my dad funeral is taking es place I haven’t seen him almost 20 years now but his dying wish was to see me one last time but this never happened because of the COVID situation but l can live through his memories with music like this thanks D.T.
to a lot of music throughout my life (Thrash, Metal, Black, Heavy, Stoner, Doom, Sludge, Hardcore ...) being the Trash what I love the most. I have to say that this man is very undervalued. He is a true genius and the best musician in the scene. His creativity is impressive, his concerts perfect, his ability to take us with his songs to have sensations that only he can do ........ I do not have qualifications. Just say that I hope more people discover the art that this man shares with the world. Thanks Townsend. The biggest.
"The Death of Music" is one of the most beautiful things I have ever listened to. I have this soul-shattering feeling that I'll never have the wisdom required to interpret its meaning. Maybe I'm not supposed to, and it's just a train of thought by Devin, who lays down raw feelings on tape about everything he was feeling in a barely coherent string of poetry.
+Tonycaveman I'm kind of the same way with it. I think he is basically using an analogy that when music dies, the world dies with it, or that it may as well because that's how important music is to the human mind. Without music, we wouldn't be able to express ourselves in such indescribable ways and thus we'd have our emotions and thoughts bottled up inside us with no release, slowly driving us to madness... Thus, when every man fades into madness, the world ends. If the world ends and man fades into madness, it could very possibly be because no one understands what music is meant to be anymore. I think Devin is not only expressing his own thoughts on the subject but is also giving us a warning of sorts: if we keep viewing music purely as sound, or as business, how much longer will it be before we destroy ourselves as a whole by letting everything that means something to us continue to fade away?
I thought the song was about developing anxiety. Mainly because of the variations of the "...myself and I, there are no others" refrain. Essentially it's about anxiety slowly creeping up on him. At first he brushed it off, and no one around him noticed. Then his friends noticed but he continued to distance himself from them. In the end he's trapped alone in his head ("...myself and I, there are no other"). I could be wrong though. The lyrics could just as easily be interpreted to be about life and the inevitability of death.
I disagree with y'all. I think this is about manic depression and how he was slowly killing himself with alcohol and drugs. How his anguish fuelled his music and how his supposed friends just laughed when he was acting out, even though he might have been acting out for quite other reasons than to get a laugh. I interpret "the rain will come" as a bout of depression coming on. When "death becomes musical", it's about how he withers away while creating music, how that withering somehow was reflected in his creative process and how he couldn't help neither killing himself nor writing music. Luckily he's sober and in much better mental health now. Bipolar disorder sucks.
+Ola Sundell I agree with you to a degree that the three "the rain will come" verses are about depressions, being someone that suffers from depression myself. The first verse is about how he deals with it through hanging out with friends, the second verse being him looking up to someone - lover, some figurehead, we may never know. The third verse being about his realization that he has come to term that he'll have to be himself, and channel his creativity through who he is, and create art that way.
I love to see that he played the best section of Ocean Machine. Especially Bastard and Death of Music. That note he hits at 14:07 is just pure Dev-Magic.
11:35 that girl to the left was me when I saw Devin warming up for Satriani many years ago. I closed my eyes and didn't open them for almost the entire performance. It was almost an out of body experience. And it really warms my heart seeing that most of the people in this crowd are actually truly enjoying the music instead of seeing it through a smartphone.
If there's one video on RUclips that I find myself drawn to over and over again, it's this one right here. 30 minutes of pure magic... Thanks for that Dev.
In literature is impossible to find an artist who can be equally good as poet, essayist and novelist; well, in music, it is possible to find an artist as good as a song writer, singer and musician. This guy is Devin Townsend.
I'm absolutely mesmerized by this set of 3 hevy hitting pieces of art, that lost the count of times I listened this year...it puts me on a trance state of something deep happening, everytime! When you let the music carries you, is the best time to say YEAH I'M ALIVE!
I have just discover it today. I know Devin but now this one. I'm stuck (probably for next week) with this performance. I can hear it even when I don't listen it. Sow deep. Amazing.
To this day. for the past 20 years, Funeral is still my fave song of all time. And these 3 songs in succession, The 3rd act of Ocean Machine. Just masterful music.
This was my first ever gig with Devin and I had only discovered him about six months before that and was lucky to get a ticket to this show. Was absolutely amazing and Funeral was probably the highlight of the show for me. Absolutely amazing artist and I'm so damn happy that I got to see the Plovdiv show as well.
23:45 have you ever seen a singer singing with arms open, like his voice is breaking free from his mortal shell and becoming some kind of spiritual entity?
Chills literally the entire fucking time! I would have literally lost it if I got the opportunity to see Devin play these beyond beautiful songs live.....ESPECIALLY "The Death of Music" as that is such a personal and special song for me. Devin couldn't have sang it better than he did on this night. In fact he made it even better..... tears of joy behind my computer screen.
+Frank I'm sorry... I must be deaf. Nowhere in that entire 3 song stretch did I hear Devin's voice fail. When you compare this to the quality of live performance you get from most bands now days, it's pretty mind blowing. I go to A LOT of shows and Devin is among the very best! No fucking doubt about it.
J MetalSkinz I saw them play the UNSW roundhouse in Sydney on his Australian tour and he played Bastard and The Death of Music, I regret not knowing those songs very well at the time but even then my jaw was on the floor and I was just floored with how amazing that show was!
I love this whole section, it's emotionally transporting. Even with his awesome screaming technique, 26:18 is my favorite bit of Devin's vocals from the entire concert. So emotive. This is the same guy who did OMFG?! What a versatile artist...
Don't worry, I discovered him in 2006 by pure accident and it took me until 2011 to absorb all of his material to that point! Take your time and enjoy!
I believe that certain individuals are the modern day equivalents of the great composers. I am sure when we look back in 250 years time that Devin will be put into this category.
Been an extreme metal music headbanger for two decades. I hated non guttural vocals. Was/Am a huge fan of SYL. mid 30s approach and couldn't register any new extreme metal. was looking for something new, something I could become a fan of. Hell no, cannot take any music which is guitarless. Then discovered Devin Townsend project. What a godsend!

I would've done anything to be able to attend this show, but unfortunately a round trip flight from Canada to the UK is out of my price range... At about 5:30 Dev is so seriously into the song, I like how he doesn't talk through these songs like he normally does with his other stuff. 100% serious, gives me the chills every single time. Funeral is without a doubt my favourite Dev song. Hope I get to see him play it with the full band again some day.
+Nevan Bartlett Serious? It's a very rare occasion to see him as absorbed in the album's original atmosphere as this... Imagine him at 13:10 saying his now-customary: "Take that, Animals as Leaders!" I know some who'd have leapt on stage to bitchslap him to stfu! But seriously, the whole Ocean Machine album is a timeless classic that deserves a Royal Albert Hall treatment.

The universe prepared you for now so you’re ready to binge-listen to Devin around the clock, whereas you couldn’t do that in previous stages of your life and arrive here.
That's what I said to myself when I discovered his music in 2020.His music should be everywhere.Devin is without a doubt my favorite artist since I first heard him.
I don't think I've ever heard a better stretch of 3 songs live ever. Devin is out of this world.
"bastard" live is such a beautiful beast. so many feels.
I would wish the stretch to include “ deadhead” and play all in my funeral .. thanks devy
These 3 songs in a row are Probably the best 28 minutes you can find on youtube... Truly amazing
RUclips? try them on your car loud while on a road trip.
@@Tio-Nino i have them in my car too of course
The guy at 12:49 is completely taken aback by how amazing Devin is.
+jacobjedi2 That's how i was first 5 minutes of the concert first time i saw Devin.
+jacobjedi2 Holy shit lol that guy. I think the acid just hit
+jacobjedi2 Same face I make every single time I play anything by Devin!!
+jacobjedi2 Then the two in front in their funny hoodies just look bored... I'm with the mind blown dude. That guy's totally in it.
+jacobjedi2 Those are eyes before a blown mind.
My first time here was in 2019, been here ever since.
Devin work needs to be preserved!
Ocean Machine is his most naked and honest album. He just bared his entire soul on that record.
It's what makes it so good... this was his therapy after the chaos of recording Alien and walking away from Strapping.
@@MickeyKraut419 Ocean Machine was recorded in 1996-97
@@ataconazi and some of the songs were written all the way back when he was still with Steve Vai (Thing Beyond Things for example)
My favorite work by Devin.
Actually, Infinity is his most naked album
This is one of the greatest videos I've ever seen. Devin is superhuman. I cant stop watching this.
It does not get any better than this. Thank you Devin!
Funeral=> 0:08
Bastard=> 8:07
Death of Music=> 18:10
I felt like I don't need time stamps for this half an hour, I can't skip a second.
i, m just freezing in a my caravan.....thank you Hevy Devy!
I am warmer
now
maybe the most powerful 30 minutes of music ever
Maybe?
That is exactly what i was about to type. I feel like i have been living under a rock. I only heard this a month ago.
B Well welcome to defy land, I'm lucky enough to have been a fan for years now, best moment for me and my son was to see Devin support himself, it was zimmers hole, it was Devin Townsend band then, and then strapping young lad, most amazing crazy night ever, 😈
B Well sorry was meant to say devy 😰
Was love at first listen when I heard Vampira on KNAC.com about 8 years ago. Seen DTP live twice and will see them everytime they are close to me.
Despite going to see Devin in Plovdiv and seeing the Retinal Circus live, I still watch this and kick myself for not seeing this live.
Bro you dont even know how luxky you are.
Ridiculously intense. Hearing these three back to back probably made it one of the best gigs I've ever been to.
+Deadhead Can I just ask what your profile picture is?
+Jethro Reading It's an image of the star Betelgeuse, one of the few (only?) stars large enough that it's surface can be resolved
This is how I always dreamed of these Ocean Machine tracks being played live, one seguing into another seamlessly and along such an enthralling emotional roller coaster ride...
It's so comforting to find out that the music you love alone can someday be loved by everyone like this.
Best singer ive ever seen. his freaking lives are as good as studio recordings.
Better, even
Always keep coming back to this video. The music, the voice, the pure sound, the quality, the edits. It's perfection
I doubt I've ever heard a better recorded/produced live performance than this, at moments it's even better than the already terrific studio versions.
***** I agree with you. There are artists that you have to feel at the live performance, instead of watching in front of a screen.
Damn I'm so glad I discovered Devin.....so good......thanks RUclips!!!!!
First time hearing this Oct 2024. Just OMG this is epic. I wish this concert was on cd.
First time hearing these songs (I'm a new fan!). Captivating.
dig in ... it's a Hevy ride!
the same for me
If you haven't heard StormBending, check it out!
I've spent a significant portion of today watching and listening to Devon Townsend Project live shows on RUclips. I'm now a big fan!
Welcome! I'm relatively new also, and joined the Dev group on FB, lots of cool people there, come join us in the Devyside of Life
Wow, sound and performance amazing in a crazy higher level, brings to tears, this man deserves a medal and a trophy ❤
What a powerfull voice he has ... it's unbelivable 🤩✌
Atonishing performances. I loved Bastard!
I love this music Div is genius
The entire concert lasts about three hours. Twenty-four songs. This is the twenty-third. Nevertheless, he sings it with a power, a freshness and a disarming naturalness! Even better than the original of Ocean Machine! He's not human. What a voice!! Incredible, magical.
I have the blu-ray of the concert. It's one of the things I will be grabbing on the way out if my house ever catches fire.
MAGIC IT IS
The only thing I hate about Devin's songs is when it ends. I have never enough ... God, what an incredible Artist.
Funeral into Bastard - best two song combination to ever grace my ears - I'd die to have seen this live .
Today is the day that my dad funeral is taking es place I haven’t seen him almost 20 years now but his dying wish was to see me one last time but this never happened because of the COVID situation but l can live through his memories with music like this thanks D.T.
That is f*cked up, sorry for your loss.
This music is a blessing on all of us...thank you Devin!
to a lot of music throughout my life (Thrash, Metal, Black, Heavy, Stoner, Doom, Sludge, Hardcore ...) being the Trash what I love the most.
+jacobjedi2 I agree 100% with your analogy.
+Ola Sundell
I agree with you to a degree that the three "the rain will come" verses are about depressions, being someone that suffers from depression myself.
That fucking note.. Eargasm.
That was two hours into the set which makes it even more amazing. btw: I was there :)
Not only that he used vocal fry behind it. Dude is a fucking alien lol
My son is going to be born during a pandemic.. I came here for good music, but it was hope.. inspiration I found instead.. Godspeed brotha Townsend
I'm convinced this is one of, if not the best live performance Dev has done IMO.
*anyone
I’m a fan of the Plovdiv show too.
Spent the day in court trying to see my grandkids. Thanks Devin. I need this to persevere.
Tears in my eyes from 0830 this is so good !
I've watched this so many times and it gives me goosebumps every time.
Sow deep. Amazing.
Promotion Machine indeed! I never really knew if I like Devin Townsend or not...
Now I am a fan, in part because of this video.
You experienced something very special. I don't think he's ever going to top this, I really, really don't.
23:45 have you ever seen a singer singing with arms open, like his voice is breaking free from his mortal shell and becoming some kind of spiritual entity?
Should've started that at 23:33... holy shiiit
It's not something you see often, and when you experience it, it's like something inside you breaks free with them.
You got that sooo right.
Its like his soul just plunged to the deepest and back, without leaving his body.
This 30 minutes of performance of 3 songs he wrote almost 20 years prior is possibly my favourite thing in all Devin's career.
its so hard to not get emotional while listening to these songs. Ocean Machine is the most beautiful music ever conceived
+J MetalSkinz I dunno, you could tell his voice was failing on him.
I think he would die if he tried a tour of this album.
I do not know how I've survived this long without discovering Devin's Wall of Sound. Second, how the hell can someone dislike this?
This concert is the meaning of the word "perfection" sublime is the word for the performance of "funeral"
I cant believe how I've missed this. His singing is unlike any other! Im in awe.
What an incredible musician man...metal is lucky to have someone like him on its ranks.
I love this whole section, it's emotionally transporting. Even with his awesome screaming technique, 26:18 is my favorite bit of Devin's vocals from the entire concert. So emotive. This is the same guy who did OMFG?! What a versatile artist...
seen devin so many times didn't bother again after retinal circus, then I see he did this last year. FFS. Every show I hoped to hear Funeral
The BEST 30 minutes you can ever spend is listening to this.
this might be the greatest trilogy of tracks ever performed
After the scream at 14:07 Mike is still impressed by Devin, like 'Fuck yeah, boss'
Emotional masterpiece. I have nothing more to say...
So pissed I didn’t discover him until Covid. No idea how I never crossed paths with his music. Glad I’ve found it now, but wow, what I’ve missed!
I discovered him in early 2019 before shit went down all around the world. Im so deep in Dev's catalog that he became my favorite musician of all time
Don't worry, I discovered him in 2006 by pure accident and it took me until 2011 to absorb all of his material to that point! Take your time and enjoy!
This music is phenomenal. Why have I never heard this before? Need! the lyrics! Please!
@14:08 is so powerful. What an incredible talent he is.
I believe that certain individuals are the modern day equivalents of the great composers. I am sure when we look back in 250 years time that Devin will be put into this category.

Such an amazing version, gives me chill every time
this song is just so powerful, i don't know what to feel about it but it just hits me every time. thanks devin
Ocean Machine came out the year I was born. So glad, that after 22 years I stumbled upon his music, and what is now my favorite album in Ocean Machine. This dude is flat out incredible and his music is captivating. Here's to you, Mr. Townsend. May your music continue to impact so many lives. 🤘🏼

This Guy is just a genius! In my opinion he's one of the best musicians alive at the moment.
Holy moly! Is it possible to make love to a voice, a brain and a soul? This performance transcends the human realm. Well done, Dev, as always.
Devins music is completely from another world. just jaw dropping amazing.
Ocean Machine is a masterpiece album
"Funeral" has an incredible melodic line! Great song!!
+Nevan Bartlett
Serious? It's a very rare occasion to see him as absorbed in the album's original atmosphere as this... Imagine him at 13:10 saying his now-customary: "Take that, Animals as Leaders!" I know some who'd have leapt on stage to bitchslap him to stfu!
But seriously, the whole Ocean Machine album is a timeless classic that deserves a Royal Albert Hall treatment.
So what you really mean is that you wouldn't have done anything. :D
incredible. This proves (yet again!) that Devy is a genius and one of the mightiest artists of our lifetime.
Jari Salonen "one of the best" wrong. He is THE best
All Hail the sound engineers, this sound is just perfect
@@joebryant8500 But you know that acoustics and engineering the sound are two different things? Both should come together to create a great experience, but even with the best acoustic in the world the song would sound crappy without good sound engineers
Thank you once again Lisa.
I did not know any of these songs...but when they were done playing Death Of Music I was just blown away..
I've loved Devin for some time now but this is just next level....
Same, I knew dev from the VAI band, then 3 years ago discovered epicloud, retinal Circus, and joined the FB group, then someone shared this piece of Life and I can't stop listening...I need it as I'm having strong difficult times with family and being abandoned.
