I HAVE MADE A 100% RECOVERY. I haven't even thought of derealisation for half a year now, even though I went through hell with it last year. Everything fell apart around me, I thought I had gone insane, entered another dimension, everything felt absolutely terrifying, dark, devoid of hope and I felt like I got stuck in a place that I couldn't exit evem through death. I had brutal intrusive thoughts all day every day about dying, freaking out about philosophocal questions of consciousness, reality and afterlife. I thought I was gone forever. But day after day, I actually spent more and more time with my normal self. By following Shaun's guide, not stopping my life and gritting my teeth even though I thought I am literally going mad actually helped me make a COMPLETE recovery. Stop researching, stop looking at forums, stop analysing your thoughts, stop trying to engage with and interact with your scary thoughts. They mean absolutely nothing, they are a symptom of anxiety. You do not have to address the content of them, ever. I have forgotten so much about derealisation, that I have only come back to this channel to leave this comment here to give hope to others. YOU WILL MAKE A COMPLETE COMEBACK AND YOU WILL BE A 100% YOURSELF. You might not believe it right now but believe someone who had it so bad they wanted to kill themselves and STILL MADE IT TO THE OTHER SIDE. It's beautiful on this side and I can't wait for you guys to arrive here as well! Life is beautiful, you are NEVER alone and nothing is as dark as it may seem now. Hold on, the darkness PASSES FOREVER. ❤

I remember years ago nonstop researching depersonalization/derealization. It took years of working on relaxing my body and not fearing symptoms before it vanished, and I just never thought about it again really. It is wild to think I used to spend every day feeling like I was in a dream and fearing everything about existence and I just can't relate to those feelings anymore. It certainly was not all at once but day by day in 2021 I thought about it less and less and now has just been gone. I remember also hearing recovery stories and not believing them, I would think that my case was special and that I was doomed to suffer from it forever. All the people that say you can recover are 100% correct. I had hundreds of DP/DR symptoms in the past but none of them bother me anymore. Be patient friends, you will recover!

I was completely overwhelmed with the symptoms and out of my body, I remember everything not feeling real. But now I can’t really relate to those feelings anymore. It took a lot of practice with relaxing my body, exercising and most importantly, I stopped researching cures and stories and everything about DPDR, I stepped out of the ring and just lived. And if i do, i laugh. Don’t be in your head 24/7. Go outside, meet your friends, spent some time with family every day. Most importantly do things that you love to do. I know sometimes it is so irritating and overwhelming but trust me, you will learn to be more patient. Just hang on. :)

I'm going on 8 months now with dpdr, a lot of my symptoms has calmed down a lot. I feel better but I still feel off, I feel like I hit a plateau, I'm still experiencing existential death crisis. I think about death 24/7 , and I can't stop it no matter how much I try. Even though I feel better I still feel off, I can't explain it. I just feel like I'll never fully recover, like something happened to my brain. I started feeling better each day, and again 3 months ago I hit a plateau. I still can remember things very well. All I want in the life at this moment is to feel like my old self again. Once I'm better and if I ever fully recover I want to help as many people as I can. This is one terrifying thing to deal with, and there's no way how horrible dpdr is, I wouldn't charge anyone to help them feel better if they knew exactly how.

Firstly I really appreciate you continuing to make videos about it to help us lost ones even though it's such a nasty headspace to be in. I really need your help. I just turned 18 and have had chronic dp/dr 24/7 for 3 months. I know you're supposed to deal with the underlying anxiety to make it go away but the thing is, my head feels so hollow that nothing can occupy it, literally - with any memories, any thoughts, any feelings, in the slightest - it's just completely blank and empty. I walk around all day with no clue who I am, without a head (I know it sounds crazy) but the 2d vision thing has basically taken it away - I don't know if anyone else can relate to their forehead solidifying ithout them in it? How can I deal with whatever caused this to start (which I have no clue of now) when I am not aware of anything other than what is directly in front of me? I had the existential thoughts and not recognising myself in the mirror to start, but now I'm just so blankly staring I don't have an ounce of focus or clue who I am. Have tried carryon on with my life but I really can't. Really struggling because not having a me in me is such an utter betrayal of who I used to be and actually am. Sorry for venting lol

Hi Jeff, thanks for your comment and I'm sorry to hear you've been having a difficult time.
Firstly, please make sure that you’re speaking to your parents about what’s happening. It’s very important that they know what’s going on. Secondly, If you are experiencing any thoughts of self-harm, please do speak to a medical professional as soon as possible.
Thirdly, you don't necessarily need to know what triggered the DPDR in order to reduce and stop it; in the same way that you don't necessarily need to know what triggered shoulder tension in order to relax your shoulder. That's a common misconception about recovery from all anxiety-based conditions. Watch this for more info: ruclips.net/video/Qy3DAFDBY30/видео.html
I know DPDR can be frightening but remember that it's just your body and brain's natural response to stress and anxiety. It's not permanent and it can't hurt you. You can and will recover. Make sure to read through all the info and articles on my website at www.dpmanual.com

Hi shaun! So i was dealing with a lot of anxiety, stress and grief. I used to land back after anxiety or after a panic attack but i felt weird after that comment. I did not think of anything of it cuz im used to anxiety but after that comment from a co worker about this is not the real reality i felt scared and obsessed by it, anxiety for going outside the house and this weird feeling of not able to think about anything. wich i can ofc. But its like trying to figure out this feeling. I dont got anxiety anymore after spending time at home but i feel off. Don't have emotions nothing hits me anymore. It botherd me cuz i know im here. It just got worse after being home for a long time. I just felt like a puppet all the time. Like my body does everything. But its not me i can't focus on anything but just the feelings. Its like living with no head even tho i can feel it I kinda hope what im going through is DP i just had to wait so long for a psycholoog Sorry for the long message hope u have a great day :)

Hey Laurence, thanks for your comment and I'm sorry to hear you've been having a difficult time. From what you're describing that does sound to me like a pretty typical case of anxiety and DPDR, but if you're in any doubt take a look through the list of symptoms here and see if they sound familiar:
      www.dpmanual.com/about/do-i-have-depersonalization-disorder/
      www.dpmanual.com/about/depersonalization-symptoms-the-10-most-common/
I know the symptoms can be frustrating and frightening but they are also temporary and harmless and will fade away and stop as your recovery continues 😊
And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR.

@@Dpmanual thank you Shaun, my final saying is and i hope u can answer this one: It just bothers me that i just think about. Is it strange to talk to myself,(always my own voice) why do i do the things i do, sometimes i can hear myself doing it (like a im going something to eat) and still feel disconected or is that disconect the DP (i remember talking about music and respond the way i used, but it frustrated me that i dindt feel anything of it. Just the numbness in my head and heart) but then im focused on whats happening like controlling ur own body. Like im stuck in my relaxed body, like the mind and body are 2 separated things. I dont know where i used to think about or ask others can u day dream feels like i can't, or where do u think about right now. But they are them self im lost i guess but im constantly looking for it to remember how normal felt like questions of but maybe i was this way all along. Some times i day dream but even that feels off. My top head feels solid sometimes, like im not experience it, nothing just staring and hearing responding and feeling my body without knowing why i dont have anxiety for it anymore but maybe i don't feel the anxiety anymore (just the disconect) an in a way i do i sometimes get scared but i keep staying in the same disconect state cuz its like this for 3 months now its like a living hell. I cant put my finger on it how i became this way cuz i know i act normal and talk about stuff in response or talk in general. But even that feels off But its like im not here like my body and everything does everything normally even act excited without feeling it i still wanna do stuff ofc and from time to time i see memories but it feels fake and disconect and betraying and weird its weird to to walk around in reality like i am a camera (or is that the living behind glass feeling) i experience Maybe? i know what i sort of wanna do or have to without me even tho i am does and this weird feeling like im going to fall not the body but my mind, like i cant hold on to something like a panic attack that rises and then leaves but the feeling of disconect and try to think of other stuff to ground my self wont work only the disconect solid head feeling not being me remains does this sound familiar? Thank you for responding Shaun i just feel so lost.

I have such a long story. I don't know where to start, but the few years of my life were terrible and I felt like I was rotting inside. I used antidepressants because I couldn't cope because this discomfort used to be not very common and didn't even have a name. When I wrote to Google searches, the existence of such a thing in the world was not even known, and that's why I felt so lonely. In fact, it is a disorder that is completely compatible with your personality structure. I'm fine right now, but that doesn't mean it won't come again, I know it very well. But I'm not afraid anymore, or I don't fall into the pains of existence and get caught up, I just live in the moment and keep my mind busy. Try to be a part of life, know that it will go again when it comes, don't scare yourself. What a word to look in the mirror, I was even afraid of my own voice. I was constantly experiencing pains, having panic attacks, waking up breathless from my dreams. I was trying to squeeze myself and feel the pain. Am I in right now? Who is this body? Where did the organs inside me come from? How do I breathe? What is the world? Why was I imprisoned in something round? Are people real? Why are we existed, where will we go? Will I go crazy? Are these dreams? A heavy depression is just getting away from life, sleeping, not eating, sleeping and even being afraid of the night. I was afraid to take a shower because I couldn't touch my own body, I couldn't look... It's all passing. We are all real and you are not alone.

@@araiq7005 I used antidepressants for about two years. Normal interval is 1 year or 6 months. My problem was always there, but I didn't notice. For example, I remember that I had this kind of disorder when I was a child, or what I felt, but I couldn't name it. It's about my character in general. I'm an individual who has all the problems inside me and it's a factor. My diagnosis is generalized anxiety. In fact, many of us have problems that need to be diagnosed. But dr, dp can get ahead. It is more appropriate to meet with a psychiatrist at first if you are very afraid. But if you are not afraid, you can also handle it with therapy. As described in the video, for example, I'm good at writing these to you because think about my anxiety level, but it doesn't mean I won't have this discomfort again. You have to accept a little. being dissociative doesn't prevent us to live.

In the beginning, my main symptoms were mental emptiness and derealization.
I feel like my depersonalization and mental emptiness have gotten better over the past few months.
But I get panic attacks instead.
One day, I suddenly became afraid to take the train.
    There is also anticipatory anxiety.
Are panic attacks a sign that dpdr will go away?
Has anyone experienced panic attacks when dpdr healed?

Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 Firstly, if you're under 18 please make sure that you’re speaking to your parents about what’s happening. Secondly, I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual.

I wish I could show you the entire book, but I can tell you what I’ve learned from it and what has absolutely worked for me:
The number one rule of all of it is this: Keep your mind occupied ALL THE TIME! Any time you start feeling anxious or thinking any scary or fearful thoughts, IMMEDIATELY distract yourself with something else engaging - read, write, watch a tv show, play a game, watch RUclips, anything - even if you’re in a situation where you can’t do those things (for example if you’re at the movie theatre and the movie isn’t holding your attention, causing you to get anxious again) focus on something specific - for example, if you’re having to sit through a meeting or movie or play that doesn’t interest you, listen to what everyone is saying and try to count the number of words they use with the letter “e.” Or see how many times in a movie a character shows up wearing the color yellow. Or start listing off all the countries you can name in your head. Anything that keeps your mind off of the anxiety is a GOOD THING.
It doesn’t mean the anxiety will immediately stop, and in fact it’ll probably keep trying to pester you saying, “Hey, why are trying to name all the Pokémon you can think of?? This is important!!” But the simple fact is that it’s not. The only reason any of the thoughts seem scary in the first place is because a disproportionate amount of attention is being paid to them - the fact that you’re constantly thinking about, for example, the nature of the universe, is the only reason it seems important at all. It would be the exact same result if you were constantly thinking about the ingredients of the food you eat, or the exact hexadecimal codes of the colors you see, or the specific number of hairs on the head of every person you meet. It’s simply not important - but your brain thinks it is because you’re constantly focusing on it, which causes your brain to believe it must be something dangerous that you need to be aware of. It’s an evolutionary survival instinct, and if you were running from a tiger in the jungle, it would be super helpful - but it’s not helpful when you’re trying to sit around watching TV with your friends.
The more time you spend ignoring the thoughts, however all-consuming and horrific they may seem, the less your brain will prioritize them. Here’s a good example: how often, when walking down the street, have you been afraid of being attacked by a bear? The answer I’m guessing is probably not very much, since there aren’t bears in Africa. But if you spent all your time reading about bear attacks, trying to figure out how to survive them, looking at statistics of when bears usually attack, who they attack, why they attack, etc., you would start to develop a fear of bear attacks - and the reason for that would be because your brain is constantly thinking about bear attacks. It doesn’t matter if you know logically that you’re not gonna get attacked by a bear, your brain is still gonna tell you, “Watch out for bears!”
But what do you think happens when you force yourself to go outside anyway? When you make yourself keep watching that tv show even when you feel the urge to look up if there have been any bear sightings in your area? That’s right. Your brain starts to forget about bear attacks. It starts to realize that the whole time it’s been worrying about bear attacks, you’ve never actually been attacked by a bear. And the more you ignore the fear of bear attacks, the more your brain starts to realize that bears are not a threat to you.
And it’s the exact same thing with DP/DR. The more you ignore the fearful thoughts or feelings that come into your mind, the more your brain will start to ignore them too. It’s like you’re reassuring your brain, “Hey, I know you’re worried about X terrifying thing, but it’s okay - we’re safe.”
And of course it’s not gonna just stop immediately, but that information is gonna be put somewhere in the back of your mind. And the more you reaffirm yourself that it’s not important to worry about it (which ISN’T done by saying, “Don’t worry about X!” as that will only make it worse. It IS done by distracting yourself and ignoring the thoughts COMPLETELY, with completely unrelated, engaging activities), the less and less important the thoughts will start to feel. I myself once got terrified thinking about some scary event that I was constantly worried had happened, even though it didn’t make any sense at all, and I calmed myself down by remembering this mantra:
*The only reason it seems scary is because a disproportionate amount of attention is being paid to it.* It doesn’t matter what scary outcome you think of, *if you focus on it hard enough you will find what you think is evidence to support it.*
But that doesn’t make it true. In fact, *it means the opposite.*
It means that all of this “evidence” you think you’re finding to support these irrational thoughts is just that - irrational, and utterly without basis. No matter what scary outcome you think of, your brain will selectively pick apart information to try and support it, but all that means is that in fact, NONE of these scary thoughts are true, your brain is just fabricating evidence to try and convince you that they are, since that’s what your brain has been focusing on.
So keep busy, stay distracted, and do the things you enjoy. Even if you feel horrible, pretend to be happy and peppy - even if you’re the only one around. Your brain will eventually start to habitualize these happy feelings, and that habit will start to replace the fearful feelings. And that’s when you realize, “Hey… I feel better.”
I sincerely hope this gave you some peace of mind. Just know that I’m not bullshitting, these are the tactics that got me through the condition, and it is 100% without a doubt that if you follow them, they’ll work for you too. It may take some time, but that’s okay - it’s absolutely worth it in the end. Good luck, I know that you can do this. I believe in you, 100%. Get out there, and enjoy your recovery!

And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR 👍

Hello! I wanted to ask about something that’s been happening. So a few months ago I had a random anxiety attack due to my health. From that morning on I woke up with anxiety and the world felt weird like I entered another dimension. I suffered from severe anxiety for weeks and instrusive thoughts (existential specifically) and had terrible experiences like extremely scary vivid dreams and feelings of disconnection with my body, it really felt like hell. Slowly I did start recovering, and time did heal me. I’m not anxious at all anymore but I still have a feeling of disconnection from reality like I’m living in a dream, my memory is kinda blurry and the world feels like if I’m in a movie or not like where I was before. Like there’s a different vibe or sensation in the environment, I don’t think about it and try to ignore it but it’s always there I have recovered from anxiety but I still have derealization and depersonalization, I don’t know how to fix it and I’m questioning if it even is dpdr due to some unknown symptoms. I’m sorry for the long comment I just needed to share this because I’m very curious.

      (I bought the Dp manual)
      1. what is the best way of getting that blank mind or interrupting your inner monologue gone? I know that im interrupting my inner monologue but the problem is I can’t stop doing it and I can’t imagine not doing so. It also has a huge impact on my sleeping like when I close my eyes and im alone with my thoughts its just hell. That became a habit and im genuinely stressed about closing my eyes and going to bed like a normal human.
      2. you said in your dp manual that we should avoid sugar and sugary things/drinks. What about sweetener? Can I use that for idk my porridge for example or maybe sweetened soft drinks? Also Do fruits count as well? Or is it basically just the industry sugar.

I can’t really afford your manual :/ But I want to know, usually how much time it takes to recover ? Some days, few weeks or few months ? Don’t worry, you will get better as time goes by, AS LONG as you keep at it and don’t give up! Keep your mind occupied and distracted, don’t give yourself a single second to focus on anxious, fearful thoughts. The way to get better is by progressively rewriting your brain to forget about the feelings of DP/DR, and the best way to do that is to make a conscious effort to distract yourself every single time you start feeling anxious. It doesn’t matter what you do so long as it’s something that keeps you busy - games, School, work, reading, writing, anything, just so long as you make sure to distract yourself. The fact that you said you’ve made progress is a WONDERFUL sign, and that proves that you can and will recover completely, because the fact that you’ve made progress proves that you can continue to make progress. As for how long it takes, I totally understand where you’re coming from, but there’s actually a chapter in the book about that very thing. He talks about how it can seem motivating to think something like, “I’ll be better in six months!”, but doing that actually hinders your recovering because you get in the habit of constantly checking yourself to see how close you are to that goal. So if you realize it’s been three months and you’re like, “Oh, I should be halfway recovered!” and you happen to be having a particularly bad day, you’ll end up feeling like you haven’t made progress when you actually have. Similarly, if after 6 months and 1 day you hadn’t recovered completely, 100%, you would feel like it didn’t work, when it really has been working, and you just need more time. It’s different for everyone, but just remember that it’s not about if you’ll recover, it’s simply about when. Because you will recover, guaranteed.

Quick question does derealization have to do with anything about adhd? I did went to the doctor and they did say I have more of adhd and anxiety but mainly adhd. And ik anxiety has that affect in dr and dp but does it have a affect with adhd to? And should I take adhd pills with dpdr?

    • @JC-kn1wy
      @JC-kn1wy 10 месяцев назад +1

Hello! I am not an expert, but I am someone with adhd that takes medication. Adhd is often linked with anxiety! The symptoms that we go through often lead us to have heightened anxiety or stress in our lives. So in a way, the stress and anxiety that COMES with having adhd could possibly have something to do with dpdr. I also have some important advice for taking adhd medication with dpdr. My first encounter with dpdr was a year ago and it lasted a few months. At this time I had just been diagnosed with adhd and was testing doses for Adderall. I can’t speak for all adhd meds, but Adderall’s main effect is ENERGY, and that can be good or bad. They dosed me way too high in the beginning and it threw me into a panic attack. My heart started racing and I went numb, and that’s when my brain snapped and I was stuck in a derealization state for months. Now that I’m dosed properly, I love my medication and it really helps, but you have to be super careful in the beginning especially if you know you have a history of dpdr. The best thing to prevent this panic if you want to go on meds is just being AWARE that when you first take it, there’s a chance you’re gonna feel like you just chugged five cups of coffee and you’re gonna die lol. Just remember you’re okay! I felt the need to reach out to you because my friend also just went on Adderall and I warned her beforehand about this. She confirmed to me that this panic did happen, but because I told her all this beforehand she was able to calm down. I just know that if someone had told me what to expect when first taking adhd medication, it would have saved me so many months of derealization, panic, and fear. Good luck! Feel free to reach out if you need anything :)

Does ED comes with this for i had smoked weed and got ED. And should i go to a medical professional to treat ED first cause this dpdr seems to be taking time?

    • @Dpmanual

Decreased libido is very common with all anxiety-based conditions:
      www.health.com/condition/anxiety/anxiety-sex
And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR.

I read in some articles that the condition is permanent and does not respond to treatment, is it true?

Don't worry, DPDR is a temporary, harmless anxiety-based condition😊 Read this carefully: www.dpmanual.com/articles/is-depersonalization-permanent/

when dp/dr goes away, can really bad anxiety still linger?

    • @Dpmanual
      @Dpmanual  10 месяцев назад +1

Hi Alan, remember that DPDR is an anxiety-based condition so addressing the underlying anxiety is at the core of recovery. So when you recover, the anxiety will be gone too 😊 www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/

Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 Firstly, please make sure that you’re speaking to your parents about what’s happening. It’s very important that they know what’s going on. Secondly, I know DPDR can be frightening but remember that it's just your body and brain's natural response to stress and anxiety. It's not permanent and it can't hurt you. You can and will recover. Make sure to read through all the info and articles on my website at www.dpmanual.com
And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR 👍
