    "Should" can also be used to replace "if" in conditional sentences, but it's such a formal way of expressing the conditionals.

    Here's a fifth way of using "should" - the so called "emotional should": I am glad you should have mentioned that. I don't understand why she should want to go there.
    Here's a sixth way of using "should". "Should" is used in conditional phrases where the realization of the action depends on some contingency: In case you should need more information, feel free to contact me.|| Should you need more information, feel free to contact me.
    Here's a seventh way of using "should" in British English, which is called the Subjunctive Mood:
    I insist that he should do it.

    whats the difference between ‘ I would do it for you’ and ‘I will do it for you’ I feel like these two sentences both means that the action will take a place in the future.

    • @engvidAlex
      @engvidAlex  6 лет назад +5

      You're partly right, but there is still a difference. "I will do it for you" is a promise or a decision made at the moment of speaking. "I would do it for you" is a conditional, which means that maybe you won't or CAN'T do it for them. "I would do it for you, but I'm really busy right now." In this way, it's a present and future statement at the same time. (I would do it now...or...I would do it for you in the near/immediate future...)
      I hope this helps!

    One question, Sir. When "should" is used in the sense of suggestion or expectation, what role does it play in deciding the tense of the sentence? For example, in the sentence "This should work", what is the tense of the sentence? We know for sure that "This will/would work" is in Future Indefinite, but what about "This should work"? Please answer, Sir.

    I already speak English lol it’s my first language, so watching theses videos is kinda fun. What I don’t get though, is that as an English speaker, why should I bother learning another language? Pretty much everyone else in the civilized world speaks English, and trying to use their language when you visit is a pain in the ass. Take for example someone trying to learn Italian, or maybe French or Mandarin. When they visit those countries, and try to speak that language, the locals immediately just start speaking English. It’s quite annoying tbh.

    • @engvidAlex
      @engvidAlex  6 лет назад

      I suppose it depends where you're visiting. I figure it's not always guaranteed that the people you're speaking to will speak English. I can tell you first hand this is the case in Quebec, Canada! I speak 2.2 languages. (the .2 is French :)) I can say that knowing more than one language expands the ways you can view the world. There are phrases and structures that exist in Polish, for example, that simply don't exist in English. The same is true in reverse. Words are also fun to discover. Like "pomme de terre" (apple of the earth), which actually means potato in English. It sounds so much cooler in French! :) Thanks for checking out the videos!

    Hi Alex
    in a sentence like "This is a bird." The best way to change it into plural is to use "These" of course :These are birds.
    But Can we use "They" They are birds. Is it okay or not?

      Yes, if you're pointing to a group of birds in the park. "What are those things?" "They're birds!"

    If I say , "you should be able to read this book" what does it mean? Does it give the sense of, I expect you to be able to read it Or less certainty?

      It depends on your tone and what you emphasize. If you're angry, it means you expect the person to be able to read the book and don't understand why they can't. You can also make it sound like you're hedging and showing less certainty if you're more gentle with your tone.
