A brilliant example of everything missing in music today.
This song was written by a guy some call the original hippie, Eden Ahbez. Ahbez lived on the streets in California. Somehow he came in contact with Nat who had previously been avoiding him, and offered him about 300 songs. Of them all Nat chose this semi-autobiographical tune. Nat sang during a time when the lyric was king, and when it comes to getting inside of a lyric and conveying it to the listener Nat was a master. His style was calm and relaxed, and he seemed to sing to each listener personally. Nat was the first African-American to have his own TV show, which was cancelled after 7 months. Not for ratings but because the racist policies of the times kept him from getting sponsors. Before Nat became this iconic living room/night club singer however he was and remains one of the top 10 greatest jazz pianists of all time. He was a truly remarkable musician. Try him doing "Unforgettable", "Stardust", "Too Young", "When I Fall In Love", "The Very Thought Of You", "Mona Lisa", "Straighten Up And Fly Right", "Ballerina" and of course his most popular rendition of "The Christmas Song".
@Hel Gar I wanted to thank you for the mystical background of this song. The real-life Nature Boy, Ahbez, long-haired & living on fruits and vegetables and sometimes under the Hollywood sign in a pre-hippie manner, who wrote this song (I’ve heard him sing it too). But Nat’s measured delivery gave it life & depth. Thanks. 🤪
That smokey voice...it’s inimitable. Man, Nat cuts like a knife right into your soul. And to think that he’s a world class piano player first and foremost ...THEN he’s a singer, and one of the greatest to ever do it.
“Let it simmer.”
“Piece of Art.”
You are so eloquent sometimes, JJ.
So glad you hear the QUALITY of the message. Hope you re-listen mindful of the QUALITY of his voice. It rings like a bell. Ty. This tune stops me in my tracks. 🤪
The classiest song by the classiest singer ever!!!!
His daughter's version of "the very thought of you" and "autumn leaves" are some of the bests.
George Benson also has a beautiful rendition of this song.
My favorite 🤩
That Silky Soulful Voice Sends Chills 💯💯 The Great Nat"King"Cole 🙏🏿🙏🏿 I love songs from the 50's & 60's the music was so real & refreshing the live Instrumentation and arrangements are incredible
A VOICE like No other .And a great Pianist .Gone much to soon.
Michelle has good taste in music. His voice was as smooth as silk. George Benson did a nice cover of this song a much needed message today.✌💞
Silk! Yes. And thanks for your comment and your obvious good taste in music. 🤪
@RagJamRock And I hear you’re also a Jaco Pastorius fan. Nice, Coyote. 🤪
Michelle. Listen. THANK you, so much for requesting this!!! It has been so long since I have heard this beautiful song..... Y'all. Nat "King" Cole....music's Renaissance Man. He did it ALL. Jazz pianist. Singer. Actor. One of the first Black host of a weekly series...you NAME it...The King.
@Cornelia Taylor 💗 Giving you a big, virtual hug right now! 🤗 I agree. I love his voice & style. And you’re so right about his achievements. A true Renaissance man.
My first request on this channel was Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come.” This song brings me the same sense of awe & pride to recognize their brilliance and share it with those who see it too ... like yourself.
Thank you so much. Btw, I have plenty of requests that are “fails” but Nat Cole is “king” and deserves to be represented here. Gratitude, Sister 😊 🌟
so pure, my grandmother gave me a cassette tape of his best music.... At 50 still cry.
My favourite Nat King Cole song. My mum adored his music.
NAT King Cole singing Stardust, is the pinnacle of 'cool'!
It's often cited as the best song ever written!
1947! ‘47, Bro!! Now your knowledge & expertise goes back 75 years, my Friend! So glad you liked this one and took it to heart. 💗 Made any support of this channel worth it! Next time, listen to his clear and silky voice. Amazing ! 🤪
You're a Queen for requesting this. Thanks and thanks again.
Nat...i mean, what’s there to say. Doesn’t matter how long he’s been gone, that voice makes his music accessible to every generation. Why? Because there’s never been anything like it since he left us. Great recommendation!
@@desertdetroiter428 So glad, DD. And JJ gets it ... hard. The heart. Even the magical instrumentation. And Nat’s diction, his pronunciation. And the way he’s in no hurry. Taking his time to feel each note. All comes together as heartfelt and life-altering the way only inspired music like this can. Thanks 🤪
@@helgar791 Always appreciate other like-minded music lovers. Thanks for your comments, your ear, your heart. 😻
When a song brings tears 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
His daughter Natalie Cole covered it as well in her tribute album Unforgettable
Smooth magical whimsical classic❤🎤🎶🎶
This is my favourite Nat King Cole song. I just love it
Now ur hitting the goldmine!!
Imho the greatest voice in the business!!
Keep going!!!!
Good song. It's played in the 1992 film Untamed Heart starring Marisa Tormei and Christian Slater. Movie has a sad ending.
Iconic. His voice is as smooth as silk. Check out George Bensons version of this song.
The "irreplaceable" Nat King Cole, what a voice!
'Ballerina' is my favourite Nat King Cole song!
It's not particularly well known, but man!
I challenge you to keep still while it's playing!! 😲
A favorite of mine.
If you would like this tune even better, listen and see the live version. It's in black and white, and the guitar player is great also.
The man with the Golden Voice
Check out some of earlier stuff with his trio, Nat King Cole Trio.
As stated, check out George Benson's version. Just as good.
Nat Cole was a very talented musician. But to me his very best stuff by far is his early piano trio stuff, before they made a crooner out of him. Try 'Hit That Jive Jack'. Trust me. And the best version of this one (although this one is awesome) is George Benson's cover.
@SupaSoul Productions Yes! Love “Hit That Jive Jack.” It’s been on my request list since I requested Steely Dan singing, “Get Back, Jack, and Do It Again.” It made me think of Ray Charles (Hit the Road Jack) and Nat’s “Hit That Jive Jack.” And Yeah, George Benson did a great cover with big production. This time, I wanted to showcase his voice and didn’t think he was represented. Thanks so much for your comments. 🤪
Also reminded of Louis Jordan with, “Take me right back to the track, Jack” in Choo Choo Ch’Boogie. Got “Caldonia” on my potential request list also. 🤪
100% correct. I have the great fortune of buying his "Nat King Cole--Hittin' The Ramp, The Early Years" on Resonance records last year which a compilation of all of his radio and transcription performance, most if not all never before released. All just great stuff. Although, for me, the Benson performance is good (and I love Benson) George never gets inside the lyric and makes it personal like Nat does. To me it's not close.
George Benson - Nature Boy
Voice smooth as butter
Check out covers by George Benson, Central Line, and Coldcut.
❤ Now it's time to react to the song that i think he's most famous for - Mona Lisa. Oh! How could I forget "The Christmas Song" which you've probably heard before - most of us call it "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire"
Genius
The best version is by George Benson but this is the OG.
True but I also love natalie version i like the musical direction
@@wakeupstopsleeping6300 I've never been a big fan of Natalie's voice. Although one of my all time favourite songs is This will be.....
@@vanburger what? Oh wow love me natalie
George Benson tore this song up.
Wait i thought you reacted to a nat king song before
cool great crooner top jazz pianist great voice died young in his 40s i think lung cancer smoked 100 cigarettes a day
❤️❤️❤️
Can you come back
Hey I'm Jeanie Michelle...I didn't write this comment...WTH?
Mystery. I thought you meant for Nat King Cole to come back. 🤪
Try Georges Benson's version for more Jammin feel
