So you actually don't kill Toads, if you read page 8 of the manual you'll get this descritpions about power-ups.
_"If you come across mushrooms(Toads) who have been turned into bricks or made invisible, they reward you by by giving you a power boost. With each boost Mario changes into a different, more powerful Mario, as shown below."_
The Horsetail Plants are the trees in the background.
Mario may be the hero was added in by the localization and is a reference to Luigi.
The Japanese manual lacks this.
_"Mario has stepped up to defeat the Turtle Tribe, save Princess Peach, and restore peace to the Mushroom Kingdom."_
I knew about the power up parts. Still got my real manual. This was just for fun:)
I didn't know the other part was a Luigi reference though. That is cool!
A really old animated movie of Super mario bros. only in Japan, but it was in english sub title, when Mario and Luigi meat Toad that escape being turn into a brick, and other things, and toad reveal that breaking break where toad, and mario appoligize since he did not know, and toad says it is fine since more then one toad escape under the floor they catch the pieces of brick in a box, so they can solve the problem later, and even if they lost a few of the bricks as long as the toad as the head he can grow back is boddy, and even if they lost the head they where ready a head of time and eat a box of 1-up mushroom before getting turn into bricks.
This is a legit animated movie scene for Mario? Wow.
Horsetail plants are just that, plants with antifungal properties. The piranha plants are something else entirely.
I researched it after this video and I think they are the small trees that start up in world 5.

In the future, see if your capture supports 60fps as 30FPS breaks certain animations (getting hit, for example).
