You're welcome! It was much easier to babble out a video than type out an answer. lol Was the other commentor correct? Were you talking about putting a wedge under the speaker to tip it down?
I believe the 7-degree wedge the other commenter mentioned was not a speaker actually, I think he/she meant a literal wedge, like a slab of wood, that wedges under the back of the speaker, tipping it forward/downward when ground stacking. This tilting gets the HF off of the ceiling indoors and gets the 3-way coverage a little closer to the stack. I may be wrong, that's just how I read the question.
That makes way more sense than putting a down fill speaker in front of the stack! lol I don't think I would tip the DZR315 forward. Mostly because I would only use this speaker at larger shows where I would want longer throw. If I was in a short throw environment where I would angle the speaker down to focus sound on the dance floor I would use a smaller system.
Thank you for your videos. My fav is your "Keep it simple stupid" vid. Have you used your big rig more? If so, any additional comments on it? Please add comments when you have your 8 sub / 4 top rig.
I've been using it more in 4 sub/2 top configuration. It's been busier than usual because because I've been subcontracting as a sound tech for a few other businesses on some corporate gigs lately. But it's starting to slow down so I'll get some more videos recorded this month. I've got some new details to talk about.
Hello again. I hired an L'acoustic series speaker system for an outdoor event which was too powerful. The audio guys turned them down as low as they could before frequency distortion and compression issues affected the sound quality. My question is not about how loud these DZR315's are but at what volume levels they are able to be reduced to before loss of fidelity, in indoor environments of, say 6x6 meters (20-foot x 20-foot). Including a 21'' active sub. I know it probably sounds crazy but my question is about whether it is going to be able to achieve the same high fidelity as lower range (both power and quality) systems at low domestic power levels? I.e. how low can they operate before loss of fidelity?
Great review really enjoy listening to your advice, I’ve been using EV ETX 12p 3 years now heavy speakers for a soloist singer, singing with Professional backing tracks. Ok I was originally still looking to change to lighter speakers, I was and still torn what to go for? Used EV for years, I hear Yamaha are more warmer sounding, my dilemma at moment should I get the DXR 12s or the Flagship DZR 12 ? Can you help me choose ? Excellent reviews keep up the great work
I'm going to do an updated review video on my DXR15MKII's soon. I used them with a 4 piece rock band last night with two DXS18XLF's for subs and man was I happy with the sound. Pleasantly surprised because they sounded better as mains than I thought they were going to. I haven't used the DZR12's yet but they are on my wishlist. I only own the DZR315's but they sound great too. I really don't think you'd go wrong either way. Updated thoughts and reviews will be coming on the DZR315 and DXS18XLF as well. I've been a little too busy with gigs lately to make videos but they're coming.
Thank you for replying, I’m now getting the Yamaha DZR 12” next week without Dante. Just commented on your mackie review mixer, 2018 post, Try a Soundcraft Signature 10 beautiful mixer it’s what I use so much on it for the buck.. have a read on what I replied to on your mackie mixer review. Look forward to your reviews.
I have 8 DBR15 units, and in the month of month I will buy 4 DZR315. but I still continue to see the development of information about the Yamaha DZR315. Can you record sound from dzr315 using Micropone Measurement? I really need it. thankyou
Hey there, Thanks for these videos on the DZRs! I bought two DZR315s and two of the XLF18subs. It’s past the return period, and I realize the speakers aren’t high enough seated on the subs and there are no pole mounts. I see you use 4 subs to get them to proper height. I’m not in a great position to get more subs. Any thoughts on what I should do?
you mentioned higher-end JBL ... actually most of my speakers are JBL - from the sound system in my car to boom boxes to studio monitors to PA speakers - all my stuff is JBL for the most part because i really like their engineering. but what very limited exposure i had to Yamaha was 100% positive as well. do you have any opinion to share on JBL vs Yamaha ? i am specifically thinking SRX835p vs DZR315 for sound quality ( not output level ) but also interested in general JBL vs Yamaha sentiment. i think SRX835p is probably better speaker for most because it is lighter, has a pole cup and a metal grille but i want these for my personal use at home so i only care about sound quality, not even output level let alone durability of the grille. i would probably use a single 18" sub crossed at 80 hz. any thoughts ?
Hi there, I'd like to get your input on the throw of the 315's outdoors. I have some dzr15 for smaller gigs and wedges. And we are looking at replacing our floodlight 760 tops with the DZR315's having been used to the turbo's and the throw of it I just want to make sure that I'm getting the same or better out of it. Most of my gigs is live bands etc. Looking forward to hear from you
Yeah, not being able to pole mount them definitely limits their use since you have to stack them on two subs to get them high enough to use. But I can say even if they had a pole mount you wouldn't want to use it. They are way to heavy, fat and awkward to pole mount. It would seriously be a two person job to get them on and off the pole. Seriously though I don't use them half as much as I thought I would. It's a big reason why I'm going to downsize to something different. But these are really designed to be a big (somewhat) long throw system..
@@TheAngrySoundTech I use old RCF ART500s on poles .. they weigh 40Kgs (90lbs) .the way to mount them is put them on the ground facedown and insert the pole and then push them up using a wall or a grippy surface to keep the tripod legs in the same place
Im going for a cardiod mode setup got damn! My ETX18SP sub is perfect when it comes to soundquality and punch, but I hate how the sound that clouds the certains eras infront of the set up when the bass reverbes of the back walls. I think cardiod mode will help me get cleaner sound in places with back and side walls..
Any advice on powered mixers vs dj mixers when dealing with speakers. I got my dxr15 finally and been playing around trying get ready for my first gigs with these babies
I don't know if I have any cool tricks to share. Typically if I'm running a DJ show I throw the speakers in front of house/main mode and let the built in DSP do the work. If I'm running sound for a band I turn D-Contour off because I prefer a flat system to fully EQ manually. But how I EQ a system for live performance is different than what I look for for a DJ show. Realistically how I EQ a sound system could be it's own video series. lol
The Angry Sound Tech great advice I just got my Yamaha covers about to do my first gig tonight with the dxr15 mkii they are my first powered speaker and so far they are amazing
I planing to hold small outdoor event in the park. Im a Techno Dj just to point that out. I want to buy two speakers without using subs. What are the best speakers for that ? Not sure if i will go for Yamaha or Mackie 215 DRM 15'' powered.
Hello Angry sound tech! I am looking at this item for both indoor and outdoor EDM/rave gigs (primarily). I have a cvx 21 inch powered sub to keep the low end covered. Would it be worth purchasing a single DZR315 to place on top? With budget constraints, it may be a while before I can get a second one. Would it be more viable to purchase two cheaper tops to go either side? Thankyou!! Keep up the excellent content :)
Depends on how big the gigs are. If they are small rooms you could maybe make due with one DZR315 until you get a second one. But I think I'd prefer to have a pair of DXR15MKII's instead of just one DZR315.
very thoughtful review. "wave guide" i think better describes what is going on with mid and low frequency drivers in the DZR315 than "horn" ... you can look at JBL EON 600 series with grille off to see they also have a device on the woofer to shape the dispersion pattern but it's definitely not a horn. "wave guides" are typically found on studio monitors while horns on PA speakers but this DZR315 i think is trying to almost be a studio monitor with the 3-way design and fabric grille ...
Overall it's just a higher quality speaker. The compression driver sounds a lot better. The horn loaded midrange driver projects better and it has better low end. I'd say the only downside about the Yamaha is that it's kind of short and fat. lol You have to have a pretty high stack of subs to set it on to get it above the crowd. Definitely made to stack on two DXS18XLF's.
Hi Angry Sound Tech! I am wondering if you can give us some advice about what to choose for our PA system. We are 6 members live bend ( drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, 2 vocals ) and we are on to buying the yamaha systems. The configuration would be 2 subs dxs 18 xlf on each side, and one top speaker on it ( Dzr 12 or Dzr315 ). Now that is our problem. We don’t know what is better match for 2 subs, the small Dzr12, or Dzr315. What is better for vocals and for sound quality. So full system would be 4 dxs 18 xlf and 2 Dzr12, or 4 dxs 18 xlf and 2 dzr315. So if you can gives us any kind of advice, we would be very grateful. Thank you, Dario, Smile bend Split, Croatia
If you're just doing two subs I'd get the DZR12 so they can be pole mounted. You cannot pole mount the DZR315 and I always believe in getting the speakers above the crowds heads. I don't own the DZR12 but for smaller shows I've been using pole mounted DXR15MKII's over the DXS18XLF and it sounds great. I can only imagine the DZR12 would sound even better. I'll be getting DZR12's soon myself for mains over single DXS18XLF's. Having not heard the DZR12 it's hard for me to compare sound quality but I believe the DZR315 will sound better just because of it's 3 way design. Most of the vocal range will come out of the horn loaded 8" driver.
Good, a companion question, would you use for ambient music, rock or blues, this yamaha dzr315 in a room of 3m by 15m, although it is 15% of its efficiency, is it recommended or is it too loudspeaker for this room? The DZR315 sounds good at low volume levels as well. If you have a smaller option I would use a smaller speaker just for ease of setup but the DZR315 would handle background music just fine.
thanks for info i got a pair of DZR12 and DXS15XLF but i'm worried about power consumption since i dont use a power distro, what does 150w 1/8 mean? is it like it can go to 1200W 8/8 at peak? seen it on the spec sheet.
I'm not an expert on power consumption but yes I do believe you are correct. Also keep in mind that peak power consumption would be rare. Typically if I have a 2 or 3 speaker system I'll use one circuit. If I have a 4-6 speaker system I'll try to use two circuits for audio.
I usually set it at zero. I typically run all my powered speakers that way unless I'm setting up an unbalanced system where I need to either boost (or cut) the tops or the subs.

@The Angry Sound Tech have another question on your thoughts on the difference for DXS15MKII vs DXS15 XLF, on paper as far as SPL its only 1 off, do you think the subs are that much different?
The DXS15MKII is a bandpass design and the DXS15XLF is a bass reflex design. In the most simple terms the bandpass design allows the box to get loud but not deep. The bass reflex design and much higher quality components of the DXS15XLF allow it to get deep and loud.
