I don't think I've ever laughed harder in a movie than when Jenny Slate was using the dog as a ball and chain like Gogo in Kill Bill. Only to be followed up by a fight of who can get a butt plug up their ass the quickest. Plus what other movies can make two rocks, or two women with hot-dog hands make me actually cry. The fact that they made such absurdity so emotional - I will riot if this doesn't a bunch of Oscar noms.

@@manhunt6662 For real. The multiverse aspect is essential to show a story like this. Yeoh's character wouldn't have fully developed if she hadn't seen or experienced all the possible versions of herself, living all these different lives. It is only through that adventure, she was able to fully self-actualize, and in turn understand and connect with Joy.

There's a reaction on YT by a young Chinese couple who shared some unique info, like how the IRS really does target immigrant businesses, how Dierdre keeps mispronouncing the family name, and the many Chinese, Korean, etc. movies the film references. Even the little song Waymond sings at the end is a Spring festival song, but was originally a song of celebration for the end of the Japanese occupation of China. They're worth seeking out.

This is the most original masterpiece I have seen in a while. Yes this is not the first movie that introduced us to the concept of multiple universes. But what makes this one truly standout is that it is not defined by any conventional genre. It is every kind of movie you can imagine. A family drama, an action movie, a horror movie, science fiction, comedy, psychological, art film and so on and so on. Yet with all that....... it still manages to be a masterpiece. I am also amazed how much talent was poured to visualize this

I agree (and even said to my friend last night) that THIS is more of a multiverse film than Dr Strange 2. I believe my words were along the lines of, "In the same way that Dune is described as Star Wars for grown ups, this film is Dr Strange 2 for grown ups."
Great concept, perfect filming choices, surreal AF and heartfelt! Looking forward to getting this on blu ray :-)

Even if life is meaningless or makes no sense, it’s the connections we make and the experiences and emotions we share that give life flavor. Positive or negative, the future and our lives will change, and that gamble of nature is thrilling! The way we feel, the way we touch, the way we love; to live life little by little, each day as it comes with the ones we love is enough.

This film's budget was only 20 million dollars, much much less than the Doctor Strange movie but so much better. To me, this is the best film of the year and I predict will sweep the Oscars. Michelle Yeoh, who I have been following her career since she played in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, was amazing in this film and deserves the Oscar for best actress.

  • @bigheadrhino

I had a sad thought at the end of the movie. This version of Evelyn was the only one that didn’t excel at anything… but that’s actually pretty good considering how many universes there are. What if Joy was the opposite and she actually didn’t amount to much no matter what universe she was in and the only exceptional one was Jobu Tupaki, and that’s why Joy had such a negative view of the multiverse while Evelyn’s was more positive.

I think, that a lot of times when we have a negative view on something, many times we just need a change in perspective. If you think about this movie, she had a view of her own life and exploring the multiverse gave her a lot of different perspectives on herself and those around her. In the end, she didn't just view things from her own perspective, but from everyone else's as well and it made it easier to make peace with the life she was living.
I've noticed that when you are younger, things are so black and white, but as you get older, everything is shades of grey. So, many times we think someone is just a jerk or a terrible person, but many times if we got to know them, we end up sympathizing or empathizing with them. They are less of a bad person than just a person with many different facets. Shows have been playing on this idea for forever. Recently I was rewatching The Big Bang Theory, and Sheldon lived up to that a lot. He was so offensive and abrasive, but as each of his friends grew to know him, they learned that a lot of those things were learned through trauma.
    My thought at least.

It was a lot of fun watching you react to this! My parents are both Chinese immigrants too (though to Canada) and though they're the hardest working people I've ever known, they're also very strict and demanding, and easy to anger but otherwise very emotionally reserved. I ended up much more 'Waymond'-like, my dad is quite the opposite. But Michelle's character was more or less spot on for my mom, haha. Most of my immediate family did actually say "you're getting fat" growing up.
If you haven't seen it, I would highly, highly recommend a movie called "Synecdoche, New York". It's hard to say it's 'similar' to this film, but there are a lot of parallels in the exploration of existential themes and life and relationships, as well as the absurdist dark humour. I will say that the two are very alike in the sense that they are both absolutely and beautifully unique, and an absolute wonder to experience. I don't know that it'd win any polls or whatnot as it's not the most widely known, but it is such a beautiful movie that I really hope you'll react to it! Astounding Phillip Seymour Hoffman performance! What I'd consider to be his Magnum Opus.

A lot of elements of this movie took me back to when I was a kid and watched 'Big Trouble in Little China', which probably doesn't hold up today but I'm sure it influenced this movie along with Matrix and others.

"I´m sorry, it´s a girl." - You got to remember that this is china. With one child policy and if you get a son, he is lawfully obligated to take care of his parents in their old age, while if you get a girl, you are obligated to provide for her for the rest of your life, if she doesn´t get married and she has no responsibility towards her parents. Circumstances make this quote very apt I would say.

This is hands down one of THE GREATEST MOVIE ever made in film history and I'm not even exaggarating. It's in my top 10 fav movies of all time for sure.
It was EVERYTHING that Doctor Strange 2 wanted to be but even they put on a whole new level with the Multiverse concept with low budget. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, this movie is the real definition of mindblowing. Can't wait to see others react to this masterpiece.
