Maurice Hines on Joyce Bryant 1955

Legendary tap dancer, choreographer and actor Maurice Hines remembers being in awe seeing Joyce Bryant headlining at Harlem's historic Apollo Theater when he was eleven years old. So successful was her Apollo debut in February of 1955 that she was booked to return in October. Hines helps us put in perspective how big a star Bryant was considered to be at that moment in time. No one could have predicted that by the end of that November, one of the great nightclub careers of the early 1950's would be over and eventually fall into obscurity.
