Back in the 80s Drum Corp International's Garfield Cadets did Apalacian Spring, with some beautiful melophone solos. Very memorable performace because they started and ended the show off the field with only a solo dancer and one horn. Also, the part where they stepped over the rifle line, DCI's Cavaliers also did that back in the 80s. As an old fogey, this was a nice homage to both performances.
The Euphoniums at 3:45 are beyond outstanding. The sonority of their sound is just amazing. And the ending with the bells, resolving to a major tops all of it off. Brings chills and tears to me every time. Especially because i played this my Junior year of high school, the same year we were Group 5 Open New Jersey State Champs and Northernstate Regional Champions. Good times. Times that i will never forget.
After 6 months of humming and searching high and low, I HAVE FOUND THIS DAMN SONG. Good god I was about to crazy. Takes me back to 4th grade music class.
I just saw them tonight in Ft Myers, Florida. They have changed this song ALOT from this performance. Both are still amazing. The poster below who says this doesnt do the live show justice is right. Live the sound is everywhere. AMAZING show.
omg i had seen this live quite a few years ago had wanted to see it again but had forgotten the name. accidently clicked this clip, glad i did. bring back great memories of HS band when i play the French Horn.
Well I saw the conductor under the balcony when they performed at the lyric operahouse in Baltimore and I also remeber in the special features of the Blast DVD they talked about the conductor or D.M under a balcony.
Definitely my favorite segment from Blast! It just became much more powerful after I listened to the real Appalachian Spring, then watched SCVanguard perform it for their 2009 show.
I remember seeing this live and around 5:30 to 6:10 that part was so cool because you just got blasted with a wall of sound it was physical, knocked you back into your seat... talk about powerful!
Appalachian Spring was very much a Santa Clara Vanguard thing before Blast! came around. Even their show this year is Ballet for Martha which eventually evolved in to Appalachian Spring. ^_^
I love when they go into Appalachian Spring...I played it this last spring during our All-State and it brings back fond memories...and they execute it beautifully :)
i would like to meet the 19 ppl that disliked this and smack them upside the head. This is one of the best shows ever, i can say im proud to have seen this live.
Video does no justice to Blast pieces, especially this one.. when you sit in the audience, you are surrounded by sound, sound comes from all angles... its awe inspiring.
The level of musicianship/performance of these folks is amazing. The handbells = genius!! My only complaint is the way it got filmed... we didn't get the full glory of the company-front, and from the comments before, I apparently missed a solo..? Thanks for posting. Very nice artistic interpretation of these pieces!
@puclik ok, NO the only relation they have to London is that, they Premiered their first show at the London Apollo theater in Hammersmith, London. they formed out of the disbanded drum corps, "Star of Indiana" here in the US, they are an American performing group, that tours the world. the point is, they are from the US, not London.
@schantzman87 speaking from marching band experience, it's a bit of both. Yes, BLAST (like all MBs) has a director of sorts, but the problem with stage is the lights make him/her difficult to see, so they have to also be able to keep time themselves. It's the same for field shows, you can't always see the Major, so you have to be able to keep your own time at points and use the others on stage with you to help keep time also.
Many the gifts, many the people, many the hearts that yearn to belong. Let us be servants to one another, making your kingdom come. Christ be our Light, Shine in our hearts, Shine through the darkness.
Drum corps has been around for a long time, and Appalachian Spring was originally a Shaker melody which Copland took and turned into his magnum opus (in my opinion). There's no way of knowing who played this melody first.
Blast! was essentially an attempt to expand the boundaries of traditional Drum Corp. This particular piece stands Drum Corp right on it's ear. :o) Ballet, Singing.... and traditional DC moves.... WOW.
The D.M. is Underneath the balcony he alsi has a camera facing him as well for the pit percussion because each square has a tv monitor so they can see him as well.
Bravo! Much better than a strict Copland operatic of the simple Quaker children's song. Would have preferred the finale with a flugelhorn like in the beginning, but the trumpet was fitting also. And the treatment with the bells......Wow. Another piece to put on headphones and turn off the monitor.
Not many people have PERFECT pitch (I haven't met any yet), but you'd be surprised how easy it is to train your ears. To my understanding, relative pitch is very common among musicians, including high school band students.
This song is so soothing. Teaches a lesson in life. Listen up. LOVE IT! :D (Meditates to song, then sings along.) You do realize it's actually two songs in this video, Simple Gifts and Appalachian Springs
17 years later and still OBSESSED
this melody was a shaker hymn. there are only 3 practicing shakers still around, but this song will outlive them i think.
you know a song is beautiful when 240p fails to diminish its beauty

No matter how many times I've listened to this song I still get goosebumps when the entire corps plays after the timpini lead in
Ever since I saw Blast live nothing ever compares to it. It's truly an amazing show and well worth watching!

Being a marching band type (trumpet/french horn/Melli), this is probably one of the best shows I've ever seen...
After 6 months of humming and searching high and low, I HAVE FOUND THIS DAMN SONG. Good god I was about to crazy. Takes me back to 4th grade music class.

Breathtaking. I've seen this entire show countless times and this piece along with "Lost" still brings a lump to my throat!
Ya I play Trumpet and its really fun to play.
I had to miss the concert though. :(...
and to think that it sounds that amazing in 240p... i get chills every time... i can't image what hearing it in person must have been like...
omg i had seen this live quite a few years ago had wanted to see it again but had forgotten the name. accidently clicked this clip, glad i did. bring back great memories of HS band when i play the French Horn.

Aaron Copland only interpreted the piece. It was a dance song written in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett, Jr. at the Shaker village in Alfred, Maine.
Delightful .. Delightful..... Love the presentation
Thank you !
Thank You for this Special Gift, during this Holiday Season...
There's just something about a company front that's so powerful! Awesome performance!
Definitely my favorite segment from Blast! It just became much more powerful after I listened to the real Appalachian Spring, then watched SCVanguard perform it for their 2009 show.
that beautiful fluglehorn solo..... uhhhh! so jealous!!
The ending made me want to burst into tears... in a good way. Love it.
Greatest performance of this song EVER...bar none.
I LOVE simple gifts!!!!!
Saw Blast! live a few years ago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago. Fantastic! If you ever have a chance to see a performance in person...GO!
I remember seeing this live and around 5:30 to 6:10 that part was so cool because you just got blasted with a wall of sound it was physical, knocked you back into your seat... talk about powerful!
Simple Gifts was not written recently. It is a very old hymn by Elder Jospeh Brackett of the Shakers circa 1848.
Shreveport in March
Baton Rouge in April
Little bit of a drive...BUT COUNT ME IN!!! Omg if I could just meet that flugelhorn player...
What beautiful music. I'm crying like big baby.
I never get tired of watching these guys
I had the pleasure of seeing this show twice live. It's such a pity that it is no longer touring.
Appalachian Spring was very much a Santa Clara Vanguard thing before Blast! came around. Even their show this year is Ballet for Martha which eventually evolved in to Appalachian Spring. ^_^
Hands down, the best part of the whole show.
Same
We're SINGING and PLAYING this in our marching show...
Just like how you guys are singing it :)
simply beautiful. I got goosebumps at the end. I love simple gifts!
Wow. Trumpet soloist has one of the best tones I've ever heard.
Video does no justice to Blast pieces, especially this one.. when you sit in the audience, you are surrounded by sound, sound comes from all angles... its awe inspiring.

its so great to see what these musicians can do,great job guys!
what an amazing group of musicians!
Boy oh boy, do I remember this song. I loved it!
They are BLAST...they are never wrong... :-)
This is one of my favorite parts from Blast!
in fact this is how I learned about Aaron Copland when I saw them live.....
That was really something. I am also playing a song called Shaker Variants at my school for band. That was cool !! :D
After 4:20, I'm speechless... It's just too beautiful...
we learned how to play this song in band...omg i loved it
I get chills every time I watch this video and see that company front!
Anyone else watch this in band class?
Forced to in marching band
@Pratham Parmar bruh im in your class
@Pratham Parmar Band kid
@Pratham Parmar Band kid
@Pratham Parmar Class just ended
split complementaries was the first video that made me cry. lol.
Wonderful, it is juz a very simple song, "Simple Gift" and the can make it so unique.
Not sure, but I think I may have seen this on PBS as a young child in the mid/late 90's.
I love this! The whole show was awesome!
@TWBaltz there is a conductor up on the balcony. I saw it live here in western ny. Plus i have the dvd and it shows him conducting.
That was too beautiful
I hope we sing and play it just as well as you did
so beautiful I cried...
I saw them in NYC I think back in 2002?
Then Blast2(I think thats what they called it)
somewhere in Pennsylvania a year later.
Beautiful!!!
I remember when I saw them in Memphis...damn I miss marching and going to see DCI contests.
@schantzman87 speaking from marching band experience, it's a bit of both. This is drum corps in another format. Santa Clara we miss you. ❤
You mean Star of Indiana
Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.
Christ be our Light, Shine in our
hearts, Shine through the darkness.

Wow cool man reminds me of almost like marching band back in highschool. cept on a stage. and with green thingys.
i saw them a couple of hours ago. It was amazing
Blast! was essentially an attempt to expand the boundaries of traditional Drum Corp. This particular piece stands Drum Corp right on it's ear. :o)
Ballet, Singing.... and traditional DC moves.... WOW.
5:24 = wedding score drumroll leading into the kiss. wouldn't that be epic!!!! :D
The D.M. is Underneath the balcony he alsi has a camera facing him as well for the pit percussion because each square has a tv monitor so they can see him as well.
Would anyone insault me if I said that I cried in the ending. Beautiful.
the only girl in percussion is the director for our WGI line. heather rocksss!
their voices are just as good as their instruments!
It's the recording of the original London cast in 1999.
I adore everyone.
The flugelhorn soloist was my high school band director
Ben Harloff. I met him through Carolina Crown.
@bamasoxtrumpeter93 They switch out depending on the song. Perfect example would be Split Complementaries. Look it up it's pretty awesome!
That was so moving and beautiful. Just a glorious performance!
me too! wonderful. Especially that drum fight part
Very beautiful, very very beautiful. Thank you.
the mellophone player is my marching band director!
The reason that the trumpet player has the best tone you have ever heard is because he's playing a fluegelhorn.
wow. i have chills. what a thrilling ending!
This is our corps song and i love hearing it.
Whenever I hear this I think of SCV '09, then I think of Star of Indiana, what if they did a mega show of Ballet for Martha :D
Bravo! Much better than a strict Copland operatic of the simple Quaker children's song. Would have preferred the finale with a flugelhorn like in the beginning, but the trumpet was fitting also. And the treatment with the bells......Wow. Another piece to put on headphones and turn off the monitor.
I love this group and this song
Today I went and saw exactly this! Truly amazing!
Wish I had a melli/french horn player for a band director. I had to self teach myself the French horn...but I do love both intstruments!
Not many people have PERFECT pitch (I haven't met any yet), but you'd be surprised how easy it is to train your ears. To my understanding, relative pitch is very common among musicians, including high school band students.
This is the Broadway show, "Blast"!
However, this video was made before the show went to Broadway. This video is from the London production.
simple gifts came first. it's from the late 1800's. it was a hymn from the shakers. lord of the dance sped it up.
This song is so soothing. Teaches a lesson in life. Listen up. LOVE IT! :D (Meditates to song, then sings along.)
You do realize it's actually two songs in this video, Simple Gifts and Appalachian Springs
my band played this, this though is breath-taking...
its a beautiful song
thats awsome, im a junor in high school and i would love to tryout for blast.
i had the pleasure ov watchin n meetin these guys :)
corps song. not theme song. i loved singing that when i was there in 05 and 06. those were the days
This is such a great lullaby...
...dang, now I'm tired...
God Damn that Was Cool.
