  • The Ben Hogan baseball swing video contains some incredible footage of Ben Hogan's iconic golf swing. Often the information in the video is misinterpreted and ends up hurting the watcher, rather than helping them. In this video Dan looks at one problem associated with this video - spinning your hips from the top - and how to fix it.
If you're interested in learning more about the modern rotational swing… • THE BENEFITS OF A MODE...

Just practiced this initiating my downswing with the left knee move. Timing was spot on. Also, loved the visual of how his right leg finishes after his follow through. Great stuff Dan!

Nice job Mr. Whittaker on explaining the swing, I do see how people could get the wrong idea of what Mr. Hogan was teaching.
Other Than Sam Snead's Mr. Hogan had the prettiest swing I have ever seen.
Rhythm and Tempo, Rhythm and Tempo, A joy to watch indeed

Great Part 1 and looking forward to other parts as well. I saw film clips of his swing back in the day when I was very young and my Father (Who loved Ben Hogan's swing) taught me how to play. It is the swing I was taught. It most definitely MUST start from the ground up with a slight lateral bump and shift, then use the body pivot to power your swing or else you will come OTT and pull hook or slice the ball. I rotate the forearms on the O.P.T. and back down which helps me stay on plane. Hogan is the iconic "Folk Hero" in the world of golf and his Five Lessons is still considered the "Bible" of golf. However if he had the technology and equipment which is available today (Like the Set Up that DW has) at his disposal, he would have been able to illustrate his swing and mechanics even better. Remember, to quote something that DW says all of the time, "Feel is not real."

This is such a great video. This is also an explanation of the early extension below the knees. Your right knee should move laterally with the target line, and should refrain from extending itself over the target line during the downswing.

Dan, thanks so much for making this video. My swing has been in a major funk the last week or so and I knew the moment I saw the vid, this was my problem. I was so open at impact I was starting to hit a few off the hosel, yet everything still felt mostly normal during the swing, making it very difficult to figure it out. Previously, I had the nice lateral movement with the left knee and all was perfect, I'd been playing some of the best golf of my life. But that's golf...one small difference can spell disaster and this was mine. Thank. You. Sir.

The key move is the right elbow drops first from the top towards the right hip. Then everything falls in place including bumping laterally without getting stuck. If the elbow turns without dropping, then that move as you described is disastrous. This is been the best move I ever found.

Great video. That over spinning with the hips is what I do with my woods (except when I consciously try to calm them down) with the result that you've mentioned face is too open, combined with my (possibly excessively) in to out path, that's big push slices... long but you don't want to be long when you're going so much off the fairway! I'll work on the knees, that could be great!

I like your video and bring out to "Start with the knees and hips." I've been studying hip turn and I've noticed it's easier to move the knees first when on the back swing the left knee moves away from your body and back slightly. That sets of the movement of the knee and hip turn.

Good vid Dan. Glad I subscribed. Others that comment should thank you for your professional insight into Hogans swing. There is a lot of information in his book that could be misinterpreted as Hogan tells us what he feels he is doing as well as suggesting what we should try and do. So for some people the feeling, because it can't be seen, gets forgotten and the physical action takes over. Remember that Hogan would not have changed a word if he could have written the book again. Most people are looking for his secret, believing that he is trying to hide it, so they feel a failure when they can't find it but it's all there in the book in plain view.

Hi Dan, I have been hitting the wee ball for over 54 years and was always told that the left hand dominates the swing for right handed golfers. I started from an 18 handicap down to a twelve for over 30 odd years with watching or reading golf tuitions, but through time the swing collapses and my handicap fluxuates by 2 up, 2 down! I have always been aware of my right elbow now and again in it not being connected to my side on the follow through and for the first time in all the years I have been playing golf I experienced the shanks and could not get rid of it for a full season! Tonight I found your video about the right side domination and the video on ben hogan for the first time! I will go practice tomorrow to try this swing out, God I hope it works as I know am not comfortable with my golf swing anymore, my putting is fabulous, it is mainly my driving that lets me down when I push the ball out sometimes into trouble as most of us do, so I do hope this swing works and is reliable as it looks? Many thanks Dan!

Terrific video as always. No doubt that that Hogan was greatest ball striker of all time. When this program was recorded (1965) Ben was a part time golfer at best and well into his fifties. He hadn't played a serious schedule on the tour for years. Yet for this match he hit every fairway and he hit every green in regulation as well. Pure poetry in motion.

It's Shell's Wonderful World of Golf. It was a match between Ben Hogan and Sam Snead at the Huston Country Club. It as taken in 1962. I know this is because I have the film. What Ben Hogan demonstrated was at the end of the match. He shows the same movement in his book the 5 Lessons of the Modern Fundamentals of Golf. If you want to see the whole match I believe there is a DVD on it you'll have to check it out or you can go to Amazon and see it there is a DVD on it . It's a great match. Ben Hogan hit every fairway and every green he beat Sam Snead. Down load his swing you can learn a lot.

Great Video. It should also be mentioned... You have to be careful taking advice from all time greats (hear me out). Meaning, while they may explain what they are doing, and may explain it GREAT... most of us (including myself), simply don't have the athletic ability to reproduce the movements the pros can. So it's very important to play golf the way YOUR body can play it and just have fun! I see too many young players who think they can hit a ball like Rory if they practice and try and swing like him... fact is, they probably will never be able to. No matter how much they practice. Most of us need to scale back our expectations of and just enjoy a beautiful game! Cheers!

Refer to Hogan's book Five Fundamentals. Although Ravelli's illustrations are very good, you have to view Ben's swing in slow motion and compare what Ben wrote... some of it conflicts given Hogan described his actions subjectively. Not writing that his perspective was wrong. The observer of his technique also reading The Five needs to be mindful that some of the elements of his swing apply well to those of similar physical build and talent. He and tour professionals seek a perfection to serve as perfectly as possible in application every competitive round. For those that don't eat, breath and sleep with the game every week, it's all we can do is to apply some occasional effort to perfect our game bit by bit each month or year.

Just try to hit a ball w/ your right hand & arm only by moving your hips first, impossible! I think Harvey Penick in “ My Little Red Book “ had it right !

You do a great job of demonstrating keeping the elbow tucked (wrong position) in during the swing using the side views but the angles you use to demonstrate the opposite and preferred elbow position showed mimic the wrong demonstration angles. Facing straight on looking at the chest as you do, the arms block the view of elbow position. You should use the same angles to demonstrate correct and incorrect positions.

I think Hogan said that we were never designed to play golf because the further you get the right elbow in front so the club is following behind the sweeter the contact, problem is the right elbow is very exposed to injury at this point. A little understanding between pull and push is to get a coin and see how easy it is to keep on line when pushing then try pulling it .... imagine the left AND Right arms Pulling the club through so there is No Fight between the two arms only pure accuracy as you sling shot the ball to the Target

Sorry, Dan, Ben doesn't say knees THEN hips, he says 'knees AND hips'.
Having said that, as an ageing and therefore far less flexible golfer, I've started lifting my left heel during the backswing for the first time in decades.
The downswing then starts, naturally, indeed I'd say inevitably, with the heel going back down, which means a left leg movement first, which is what you said! And it's working like a dream! (At least, this week....).

There is a p0sition that will eliminate that spinning out or coming over the top and it is this. You want to feel like, just prior to impact, that you're squashing a bug under the ball and big toe of your left foot. What this does, is give to a fixed point in the swing for everything to release.

  • @shawnkirkpatrick906

It’s quite an optical illusion he is dropping his hands and arms also they are not stuck behind him and his lower body turning. The modern instruction of leaving the hands and arms up and turning or even squatting is flat wrong. Check out Sergio Garcia he’s says the downing is like pulling a chain with the grip end of the club at the ball. This is why him and Hogan get so shallow in the downswing. Not by squatting or any other manner of things that are being taught these days.

vinson shinabery Ah, FEET! That's why Sam Snead liked being barefoot. The feet tell you where your weight is. If you can't feel pressure on the inside of your right foot, you have shifted properly and if you don't feel pressure on the inside of your left foot, you haven't shifted your weight to the left side; all your weight will be on the right side and you get a slice. The baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson said the same thing.

I love your explanation but I watched Hogans video and how he articulated it. He CLEARLY spins open to impact when he's explaining the move. Go watch it. its NOT as much a lateral move as a spin. Go to about the 1min mark. Hogans move is a huge spin with the lower body opening up. Glad Dan corrected this explanation because Ben Hogan was incorrect (yea I said it), should be more of a lateral shift/move and not the spin which will also cause an over the top issue

Hogan's turn allowed a "pocket" to be created by the right hip turn....this allowed the elbows to FALL in and catch up with that right hip.. If a golfer does not rotate the right hip TOWARD the target on the backswing, there will be no room for the right elbow to fall into the right hip...he will then be stuck.
Hogan's turn is the key...for he braces into the right leg, but he is putting his torso and weight toward the target, so when he unwinds he is on the ball.

Im a chicken winger and was told that the chicken wing isn't the problem, its the symptom. You need to find out whats causing yours. My balance is crap and I sometimes fall into the ball or crash into the left leg and I chicken wing to save it. If I swing in balance, there is enough space for a straight left arm and the chicken wing disappears.

    • @jalan8171
      @jalan8171 3 года назад

Mr. Hogan and Tony Ravelli inadvertantly screwed up thousands of golfers swings by somewhat disconnecting the written instruction Hogan penned with the illustrations made by Ravelli. Example- The free standing drawing of Hogan's (anti-hook) grip versus the paragraph that states most golfers adopting the 'weak ' grip will generally slice the ball worse since most golfers are incapable of generating the rotational action to square the face at impact as he was. Many instructors have been grateful to Mr. Hogan and his Five book for the business generated due to so many failing to properly read and interpret the text against the drawings which tend to capture greater attention visually.

Ben Hogan is a greatest golf icon, he spoke frankly without trying to hide his top secret of swing.
Please note that he used the word "body movement" instead of "body rotation", he said "use the lower body to drive" instead of showing what the club track should look like.
The concept of rotation is the most poisonous for golf swing!
For example, the most important control points are the belly button and the pubis,
We can find they move linearly near a straight line. With few up & down and back & forward.
The rotation like body movements are made by the direction of muscles fibers, which are out of the control of our mind.
Please don't show the club swing path. If a player pay attention to this, our brain just like computer's CPU , only can conduct a single action at a time, he would ignore the other movement with higher priority.
As for preventing early extension? The only way is to regulate the axial spinning angel of the upper arm. we should pay more attention on this issue on Ben Hogan's swing.
But how? that's what we have to study snd learn!

2:04 I love how golfers all say "the right way" to swing then they swing a completely different way. Hogan's first move is his arms which he just said is the worst swing... Its amazing the disconnect between what people think they are doing and what they are doing. Even Hogan suffers from that disconnect.

What kills me is just sitting in the corner is a trackman? So many of these types of devices are owned, they are the price of a nice used car... I feel so inadequate that I can’t justify the cost of the most important golf tool. Tell me these guys are getting this at a discount price, I can see pro golfers having these , but they are millionaires?

You have to think about the arms swinging down or throwing the club and the lower body should respond. If you start by thinking of getting the lower body going and spinning the hips you will end up coming down outside-in and slice! Think of it this way. Video yourself skipping a stone or a golf ball. Then watch it and describe the action. You get your weight like this, open your hips like this...and on and on. Try skipping a stone with that description. It doesn't work. This is why a lot of PGA golf instruction is lousy for average players. They need to teach how to swing the arms correctly and the body will respond. Want proof? Look at all the average players who take lessons and never improve or just give up. In fact Rory Mcllroy even said he never thinks about his hips. He just swings his arms harder and the hips do their thing. I took lessons from several "PGA Pros". None helped me. My swing was fundamentally wrong. I used the lower body and hips to swing my arms and had a severe slice. Only when I found videos on youtube that showed how to swing the arms did I start improving.

wardn53 when you can control your hips properly and fire them without swaying... in any sport... You see and feel the difference. Effortless power and the better you get oh man... You'll finally see what you've been missing. It's so simple too but took me 35 plus years to get it. The hard part is braking my desire to step into the ball in golf from other sports I've played but it's all the same movement and whomever reads this start working on that if you're looking for more power. It's all in the hips 100 percent. Back load up the coil ... Then forward and explode that energy through the ball like a whip. Just like tennis, racquetball, hockey, baseball, and even soccer...

wardn53 you're right it's a slight shift with the lower let the arms drop to the hogan slot then the hands drop the club then you go through like hogan does. Hogan does say that down swing is shallower than the back swing.

You make some good points, and I don't think you're wrong. But doesn't Hogan mention that in his 5 fundamentals book? His brother Doyle was an accomplished baseball player, and Hogan used the side arm throw to first base to show the readers what the upper body is doing in the swing as well. Hogan mentions in his book also that his way of hitting the ball is not for everyone. Players who have had Hogan watch their swings have said that even though they were different from his method, Hogan told them to not change what they were doing.
I have had PGA Professionals teach me to just let the arms fall down to the ball and the lower trails and once the timing was down, was able to hit the ball well. I have also had other PGA professionals fall under the Hogan philosophy to generate power by using the lower body and core to utilize the ground forces. Again, similar results and have broken 80 using both. I love and respect all PGA Professionals and their contributions to the game. But as learners, we have a responsibility to find the teacher whose philosophy coincides with what we are comfortable with. Or with many of us, the RUclips channels that fit our individual eyes.

The reason why you didn't improve when you went to see a P.G.A. pro is that they teach you how to swing like they do. It can't be done. You have to find someone who listens. You have to find someone who teaches the "FUNDAMENTALS" not some off the wall sh^t. That's the reason why people who take lessons for P.G.A. pros never get better or they just don't practice what they have learned.

Its not about turning, that leads to spinning or about lateral. Its about pressure into the ground and its not as simple as right leg left leg
Look at Hogan(OK its his old man post car crash swing but that just makes it easier to see) At the top he is putting pressure into the ground thro his right leg But it is also angled severely his right hip has moved back towards target. Most people trying to put pressure into the ground would have a straighter vertical right leg
He then reverses thro to oppisite left leg pressure angled away from target but its not a simple right leg left leg.In fact from the top the pressure is right leg, left leg right leg left leg!

I think you’re overcomplicating things, or atleast making it very difficult for an average golfer to follow. Maybe you’d benefit from a shorter video aimed concisely at the point you made at the end.

What gets me is this bird is criticizing Ben Hogan's swing and he's never won a PGA event of any kind. How do I know? It's the only thing he hasn't bragged about! Why aren't all these Limey golf instructors criticizing Faldo or Westwood. The press in the UK used to call Faldo El Foldo and they were right.

If you listen to this guy you'll never strike it like Hogan. Ben could at least explain it 10 times better and of course you never see this man hitting a shot. I learned years ago dealing with terrible instructors until I finally figured out of they can't HIT the shot themselves while I'm watching, then they have nothing to tell me, unless of course they were once a great player and now too old.. or injured. I learned nothing here.
