Great tutorial. One tip I've heard of in the past is to always loosen the fill bolt first (don't remove it) before the drain bolt. That way if you find that you somehow cannot loosen the bolt, you're not stuck with a differential that's free of fluid.
My fill and drain plugs were so tight that even with a 18" breaker bar, I couldn't shift them, and cracked a rib, trying. In the end I used my 18v Makita impact wrench, which had them off in no time. They really are tight, and if you're working underneath a jacked-up car, ne sure it's well supported.
Funny enough I just did this today, on this exact crv. Drain bolt is on driver bottom of trans, it requires a 3/8 drive rachet. I just remove the reverse sensor on top of the trans. It's a 27mm and refill 3quarts mtf with a funnel through that hole. Reinstall reverse sensor and you're ready to go
Thanks for the info. My 04 crv has had this loud humming sound when I drive it and it's coming from what sounds like the rear diff I'm assuming. I have never changed the fluid on that since I've owned it. Have you ever encountered that problem before? The loud humming sound with moving?
Since it's cheap enough, I would start with the rear differential fluid change. A common "first" symptom of your fluid going bad is that you'll hear a humming sound in the rear when the car is in reverse and you're turning at an extreme angle (left or right - doesn't matter).
@@michaelwilson2891 I did that and changed the fluid but there was still no difference in the noise. I ended up getting the hub and bearing but haven't put it in yet. I'll lyk how that goes.
Tip...just put teflon tape on threads. Even if crush washer is reused wont leak and also prevents steel to aluminum corrosion bonding for next time easy removal.
I have a 2003 CRV. Do you know if the differential will be damaged if the driveshaft is permanently removed? Would removing it lessen the internal lubrication of the differential? I can not find this information anywhere. Thanks!
Another great tutorial and keep posting more on the older CR-V years. Replaced the fluid on my 1997 CR-V, but its been a while. What's the service limit on the fluid in miles? Just replaced the Ignition Control Module and the car runs a lot better. Cheers
Yeah, I'm just too lazy to get out the shop manual, which I have, and look it up. Headed to the Honda Parts dept. tomorrow to pick up a battery. The old OEM battery died today, but gave me over 5-years of reliable service. Stay cool brother.
Good stuff, I just had my new to me 2006 CRV come up with P0431. cam position sensor with VSA and Triangle symbol lights come on with the check engine lights? Mega miles 292k. runs fine in spite of the lights. Any idea's?
What gets me about this is that the 2nd gen rear diff is basically redundant. All that expense for a part that is rarely, if ever used, as the car is mostly front-wheel drive. Anyone ever seen their rear diff 'engage'?

That's a good tip!
You beat me to it...
You sir, are an angel. By far the clearest videos to help me work on my CRV. I appreciate your work so much!!
Thank you.
Thanks for the video. Was going to ask the mechanic to do it but it looks easy enough. From Cyprus

Good diy vid. Think I would remove the fill plug before the drain plug, to make sure it isn't frozen.
Good point! You must live up North😂
Yeah. I cringed that you didn't..
*Laughs in Ohioan*
Great video!!! Do you have a tutorial about the transmission fluid change???
I dont think so but its not super difficult. Next time I do one, I'll film it.
@@hondaresourceactually is not too different, drain plug is similar.
You are the man! Babb for president!
Yeeyee
How to change the manual transmision fluid on this same vehicle..?

@@hondaresource Super, thanks so much.!!
Sir i own 2003 Honda CRV Manual Tranny, im not sure if it has rear or front Diff. Fluid Too?🤔 Please Help 🙏 Thanks...
front diff is built into the transmission, it shares fluid with the transmission. If it is AWD, it will have a rear diff as shown in the video.
Thanks for this. Especially the pump.
Would make changing out the diff fluid on my Subaru easier
Yeah, the pump like I have linked in the description is preferred over the one I have

Can you please tell me what was the cause of the sound you were getting. I have the same problem and how u fixed it
It was the wheel bearing, I replaced it and now its fine.
@@bjornironforged9951 did u have to press out the bearing or a complete hub replace
Looking for a video for same car window trim n frame trim removal

Thank much. Great tutorial. I have a 2009 CRV. Is it pretty much the same procedure ?
Essentially exact same.
Great video. My CRV has 270k. Trying to do some of this myself now. Is the crush washer the same size as the one for the transmission?
I'm not sure to be honest
@@hondaresourcedo you have a part # for the washers??
I'm going to change my diff oil as the 4 wheel drive is not engaging, do you think this will help? If not, what could the problem be?
cheers
It could definitely help.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. By the way, I am your new subscriber.
Awesome, thank you

No, it'll be fine.
What is the yard stick of changing the differential fluid of crv gen3
Roughly the exact same process.
That boosted blue beast in the back tho.. I wanna see what’s in that civic!!!
There's plenty of old videos on it. I sold it about 3 years ago

What size are the washers????
I'm not sure
Thanks for this
No problem
Going to be doing this to mine soon, so I figured Id come to your page to see how its done. I forgot the porn stache 🤣
Cant find fluid anywhere.
It's tough to find right now. I think O'Reilly or advance carries an alternative that my local dealer told me about

If you take it off road it most definitely engages
I agree, take it into snow and you can absolutely feel it engage.
All the time in sand and snow for me 🫠
Haha then what if the fill bolt is stuck
Never had that happen.
