  • I will introduced you to block printmaking / relief printmaking. It is a process where a design/image is carved on a ‘block’ which can be a wood, linoleum, metal, acrylic plastic sheet / rubber. In this quick tutorial I will show the basic things you need to start on this hobby. Also, I printed my Pacific Swallow digital sketch for this tutorial. Enjoy!

    Materials I used:
    BLOCK
    Speedy-Carve™ Blocks (Soft Block) - www.speedballa...
You can use another brand like Essdee - www.essdee.co....
    --
    LINO/BLOCK CUTTERS
Speedball Lino cutters and Lino handle - www.speedballa...
    Pfeil Lino/Block Cutter - www.straitsart...
Note: Pfeil brand is a bit expensive so if you are a beginner, Speedball and Essdee brands are more budget friendly. You can also check other brands with Lino or Block cutter tools.
    --
    INK
Speedball Fabric Block Printing Ink - www.speedballa...
Note: I used an oil-based ink because I want to also print on fabrics like canvas tote bags. There is also water-based inks and you need to use a block that is suitable for this kind of ink. Also Essdee have block printing inks.

    BRAYER / INK ROLLER
    Essdee Ink Roller - www.overjoyed....
    Speedball Brayers- www.speedballa...

    OTHERS:
A4 Cutting Mat - Any brand you can find in art supplies stores or online (Shopee, Amazon, Lazada etc.)
Snap Off Cutter - So you can refill the blades. I am using the Tajima brand.
Paper - Any blank paper that is not too thin so the ink won’t seep at the back of the paper. You can also consider buying nice specialty papers that have 100gsm to 200gsm paper thickness.
Pencil - Mechanical pencil with 0.5mm lead or 0.7mm (if you want a thicker one). HB pencil, any brand.
Carbon transfer paper (for transferring an image/photo to the block).
Note: Check materials in your local art and supplies store or on online shopping/e-commerce sites.
