I've used a speed pick as my only pick for years without any issue. I think they feel and sound great personally.

Hmmm……. I am 78, playing banjo 3 years and follow Mean Mary who plays with speed picks. I have tried many different picks and find speed picks are more precise and kinder to my arthritic thumb. No controversy just that giving an expert opinion like this may put off others from experimenting to make up their own mind about what’s may suit their personal abilities or preferences. Kind regards Tim

I have used a speed pick for a couple of years after having used a blue chip for a couple of years. I prefer the speed pick simply because it gives me a brighter tone which is what I want from my instrument.

Wow! You switched from a Blue Chip? Nice! I can understand wanting the brighter tone. Is it that only thumbpick you use now?

@@acousticidaho yes it is. I also use Ernie Ball finger picks for the tone.

I’m sure your playing with the speed pick would improve, IF you were motivated to use it. But in this video, the 5th string gets kind of lost lost.

That's true. If it's all I had, I would make it work 🙂

I’ve used the speed pick a little bit on the banjo. It’s okay, but I don’t see any advantages compared to my normal pick

Yeah - I tried to get used to it, but never could.

My current vote goes for “perfect touch picks”…..I’ve only been playin about 6 months and 1/3 of that is pickless as learning clawhammer too but tried most picks other than the most expensive ones.
Speed pick (white, the thickest ones) was my favourite at one point…..
Zookies have angled blades at 10,20 Or 30 degrees and were favourite at one point….
Black mountain thumb pick was by far the most comfortable pick until I tried a “perfect touch” thumb pick which looks bulky and feels weird when you first use it but fits over the knuckle so stops you bending the thumb and super comfy at the same time.
Cos I liked the thumb pick I had to try their finger picks(curved) which were expensive for me as I’m in the UK but they really are the mutts nuts and have now replaced my trusty Ernie ball pickey picks which I never thought would happen!……I guess it’s all down to personal preference and what sound you want at the time? 🤔

Thanks for the info! I've never tried the Ernie Ball picks before, but I know several people who love them. As for the thumbpick, I love how comfortable my Blue Chip pick is. Never slips or rolls. It was worth the price for me. I'll need to check out the Black Mountain thumbpick though!

I use the Ultex Dunlop large. I works fine for me but I do want to try the bluechip! But it's pretty expensive...

Nice! I finally bit the bullet and purchased a bluechip years ago. It's my favorite thumbpick by far.
