My Name is Earl and Raising Hope are hidden gems of modern TV sitcoms.
Everybody Hates Chris too
It also didn’t help the fact with season 3 that it got affected by the writers strike from 2007 to 2008. So there were few episodes being made. Whether or not it’s a good or bad thing is entirely up to your interpretation.
Overall, my name is earl and raising hope are extremely underrated shows! Greg Garcia is an awesome tv creator I think! I hope he makes another show someday.
He is making a new tv show on Freeve on 2024.
@@facundobaldivia1914 that’s great to hear!
I was a huge fan of the show, and even I knew it was on life-support after season 2. I've never blamed NBC for cancelling it.
Also, I have seen Raising Hope. Loved that show.
I didn’t know Dave Seville had his own show. Lol! 😂
💀💀💀
Technically there is a resolution to this show, it just takes place off screen, My Name Is Earl and Raising Hope are confirmed to take place in the same universe, and in fact take place in the same town (Camden County), and in an early episode of Raising Hope (which canonically takes place after My Name Is Earl) one of the characters is watching TV and there is a news story about a local man who made a list of all the bad things he’s done and his quest to cross them all off. The story says that this man had recently finished his list and speculates on what he will do with his life now. And that’s the end of it.
So Earl did get closure.
@ryan jones never resolved
Camden County is from My Name Is Earl. Raising Hope is set in Natesville, though it is close to Camden. The show kind of is and isn't in the same universe. It's one foot in and one foot out if that makes any sense.
I’ve only heard of this show because I learned that Jason Lee was in it. Also, I’m sorry for only getting one of the Vs the Network video hints right. I loved being a part of it of course. In all seriousness, this was a really fun comeback to the series, and I cannot wait to see season three next year!
Earl was never an ex con before he went to prison for joy he'd only been in the country jail before that
Not sure I like the idea of Earl just stopping trying to complete his list because he inspired other people to create lists of their own. If anything, I think that would make him want to complete his list even more, since more good deeds and making others want to do good can only mean more good karma for him.
I think a better approach would be if Earl finds an item on his list that he cannot possibly make amends for (maybe because the person he wronged is dead and didn’t leave behind any family, or something along those lines), and he has to come to terms with the fact that he’ll never be able to finish the list, but can at least take solace in the fact that he’s inspired other people to do good deeds, and he helped to make the world a better place.
Edit: now that I think about it, they may have done something like that already. It’s been a long time, can someone remind me, did they already do an episode where Earl had an item on the list that he could never cross off?
I remember a couple episodes like that. One episode, he tried taking his nephews (I think? It's been a while since I watched it, but it was two young boys) to an amusement park, but it closed down for good. Earl was upset that he couldn't make it up to them, but the boys forgave him. They even took his list and crossed it off themselves.
There was another episode where he tried to make amends to a local daredevil... who suffered from amnesia. He was basically living the same day over and over, while the world around him kept moving forward. Earl tried multiple times to make things right (which usually ended with the daredevil becoming extremely upset), but every time he'd fall asleep, he would forget that Earl even visited him, let alone tried to make amends. Eventually, Earl didn't see the point in putting him through all that stress just for him to forget again, so he'd just stop by to visit and brighten up his day.
There might be more examples, but those are the ones that sprang to mind
I've watched most of Raising Hope.
Need to watch it again.
Also, Family Guy's story taught me so much about when a network has *way too much* faith in your product and won't let it die.
But they did let it die when they didn't even attempt to make an agreement to continue the lease of the studio that the show was filmed at...Sad really.
This kind of reminds me of what happened with Eek the Cat, where by its final season. Instead of actually focusing on what the show actually had its selling point on. That being the fact that Eek was an unlucky character that does get good deeds payed back to him in the end of the episode, with celebrity cameos and slapstick thrown in the middle. Season 5 basically just became The Eek and Sharky Show, because most of time. it was only focused on Eek and Sharky, while nearly every other character almost disappearing entirely
This was one of those shows that I never expected to like. I had heard about the show through another person's review of Dan Vs. describing it as a "weird inversion of My Name is Earl." So when I found out the whole series was free on IMDB TV, I was curious and decided to start watching. Checked out the first episode and thought it was pretty good, so I decided to watch the next. I enjoyed that one too, so I decided to watch the next. Before I knew it I had binged nearly half the season that day. Now I've seen the entire series and I must say that it's one of the most unique sitcoms out there. I don't think I've laughed harder watching anything else. Made even better knowing that Dave (Jason Lee) from Alvin and the Chipmunks was playing Earl. It was perfect. My Name is Earl strikes the perfect balance between wholesome and hilarious. Witty yet heartwarming. Seeing someone like Earl make a genuine attempt to turn his life around and grow as a person while also improving the lives of those around him just feels so good to watch. Hilarious and sweet with a great cast of characters. Anyways that's my tangent about the show.
My introduction to My Name Is Earl was actually that cliffhanger finale lol. I got so sucked in by that episode that I binged every episode. It was only after that when I found out that the show was cancelled 🤦
Thanks for giving that tidbit from the creator at the end. That's actually a really cool and realistic way of ending off the series. It's just a shame we never got to see it... or find out who the real father was. Oh, Joy, what a woman...
It's a miracle this show aired on network TV the way it did, I could only imagine how much further they could've gone if it was on cable.
I remember when I considered my name is earl as my favorite sitcom of the 2000s (that is until I watched it’s always sunny in Philadelphia. And after not caring about the jail episodes or the episodes where earl is in a coma I bumped it to 2nd place.)
Thank you so much for the shoutout!
Whenever I see Ethan Suplee in any tv show or movie I’ll say he it’s Randy from My Name Is Earl
The pilot was filmed in my hometown lol the liquor store still has the poster signed by Jason Lee
Apparently this season of Vs the Network has a bit of a pattern when it came to NBC being mentioned in episodes 2-6. Am I the only one who already noticed?
evil Corporation Comcast
I also noticed that pattern.
Funnily enough, every episode is on Disney+ here in Australia. All 4 seasons!
I remember watching my name is earl in the late 2000s/early 2010s
glad your channel blew up over the past few months...wish my videos got THAT kind of luck. Hopefully both our channels grow!..
I Love My name is Earl I've seen every episode and I wish they hadn't canceled it
My god I haven't heard my name is earl in years
I remember my name is earl I miss that show
I just discovered your channel, love your videos!
There is a 'final' episode of My Name is Earl. It was in Raising Hope.
My name is Earl is my all time favorite show, I was even watching it as it aired as a kid in the 2000s not a day goes by I don't reference it in some way.
I've learned about this show because of Jason lee from those Alvin and the chipmunks movies
He also voiced Syndrome in The Incredibles.
I was not aware that all those plot changes were so off-putting to people. For me, all those wacky detours were a part of what made the show the show, that it was supposed to be all over the place. But then too, I've always had finicky tastes when it comes to what I watch on TV. In fact, I've found that most of the programs I get interested in - whether sitcoms, crime dramas, cartoons, or what have you - rarely end up lasting beyond two seasons whereas the ones I just can't freaking stand go on for seven, eight, nine or more years.
This show was so underrated. I never say this but it deserves a reboot
I'll still never forgive NBC for ending this show on a cliffhanger
Hey, Great job on the video! I was thinking of watching the show after some other shoes that I was finishing up, but I think this video is helping me want to check out the show even more.
As for another vs. the network story that I've heard about, (You don't have to do this one if you don't want to, I know your rule on requests) Final Space got canceled early this year, but both the network AND the creator aren't to blame, they both want it to keep going. A reason it was canceled was because of corporate mergers. I just thought it was interesting reason for a cancelation since BOTH of them wanted to keep going.
P.S. There's also a story about how O.K. K.O. got canceled because of Trump for some reason, but I know less about that.
I KNOW YOU SAID THIS 8 MONTHS AGO BUT OMG YES FINAL SPACE IM STILL MAD ABOUT THAT
One of my mom's favorite shows!
My name is Earl & Raising Hope are my 2 favorite sitcoms ever
The proper way to verify whether this is true would require me to do way too much research, so I'm not going to. But a couple things that would be nice to see would be this shows ratings when compared to other shows that aired during the years this show ran, as well as shows on other networks in the same timeslot. After just a quick glance, it's ratings don't seem to be that much worse than the office which seems to have aired right after this show.
I've seen raising Hope
Ah, but you are forgetting the ONE BIG IMPORTANT THING in all of this.
"My Name Is Earl" was cancelled by NBC during .............................
THE JAY LENO SHOW FIASCO OF 2009.
Basically, NBC decided to create something called "The Jay Leno Show",
and have CoCo take over The Tonight Show.
NBC wound up cancelling A LITTLE UNDER HALF of its lineup to create room for Leno's show,
some of them deserved to be cancelled like
Kings, LipStick Jungle, and My Own Worst Enemy
but some did not deserve it like
Southland (which TNT picked up for a couple of 10 episode seasons afterward)
and My Name is Earl.
We all know what happened next -------
Leno's show bombed, NBC screwed CoCo, and the entire world hated NBC for at least five months.
My final analysis:
Earl did not deserve to be cancelled, and Leno deserves to suck it.
0:02, I'm jealous
It’s alright. There’s always an opportunity to win the comment of the day
@@albertrobinson4576 Really?
Thank you!!! I loved the series, but the jail season really was the worst for me.
I know you guys don't take suggestions, but I'd love to see a VS The Network episode on more shows that ended on cliffhangers like Silver Surfer, Sonic SatAM, or Spectacular Spider-man (wow that was a lot of S's).
Personally i love my name is earl
This is an inexcusably bad video - now, admittedly, I turned it off around the 10 min mark so I may missed a surprise reveal where the narrator said "just kidding! All the things I just said are either misleading or downright inaccurate, like and subscribe for more!!" but if not, OOF
Just a few corrections (because I don't want to spend an hour correcting everything) - telling people that season 2 "has no list" is either blatant lying or an admission that you've seen roughly 1-3 episodes from that season. Please, tell me all about the episodes in s2 that don't feature the list at all, I'd love to hear about them. The difference in season 2 is that he doesn't always operate from the formulaic "pick a list item and do it" format, some episodes are more based around Joy and her exploits and how Earl contributes, but he ALWAYS adds the bad things he does for her to his list, even correcting some of them in the same season. This is absolute nonsense and almost made me turn the video off right then. But thank goodness I stick around, because...
Season 3 is decidedly NOT "Earl is the New Black" - this one can't be like factually disproven since it's an opinion, but I don't see how you could come to that conclusion - the entire first episode of s3 is about how Earl can't let his life turn into Earl is the New Black just to survive in prison, he has to keep living the same kind of life, doing the same things he was doing on the outside (helping people who need help) - that's what throws him into the existential crisis about how doing a bad thing for him out of prison, and how Karma hadn't rewarded him for all the good things he did. S3 was a unique way to tell a story and I understand how some fans got turned off, but I loved it, it was a 22 episode way to make Earl realize that you shouldn't be doing good things with the expectation of a reward, the reward IS the good you're putting into the world. The show lost some viewers because of it, but it also lost viewers because this was the year of the writers strike, so there was a huge gap between the first half of the season and the second. Watching it on DVD or streaming tells the cohesive story they were going for, and might just keep you from saying insane shit like "his wife was captured by Amish people" - damn dude, are we watching the same show?
Finally, people (well, reasonable people) weren't mad just because the network cancelled the show on a cliffhanger - yes believe it or not the average television viewer understands how the economy works. People were mad because Greg Garcia EXPLICITLY ASKED NBC if it was safe to end this season on a cliffhanger that he'd be able to answer in the next season and they told him it was. It wasn't an issue of being unreasonably upset that they cancelled a show that was no longer bringing in the ratings, it was that they broke their word and allowed the show to make their final episodes a cliffhanger, when if they just would have answered the question honestly they might've wrapped up the story and given the show a proper conclusion.
I'm not going to get into all the little inaccuracies like the difference between Jail and Prison, partly because I don't remember most of them, but also because I don't want to keep writing this out - I have no idea about your other videos, maybe this is a rare swing and a miss for you, but I was very annoyed with all the inaccuracies while watching this, and I also got the impression that you resented the show for trying to grow and change rather than just being the comedy version of a procedural, no matter how many times you stipulated that you liked the things you were simultaneously blaming them for doing. Is it the staff's fault that it got cancelled? I suppose that argument could be made, but definitely not like this, and DEFINITELY not without acknowledging that NBC told them it was safe to end s4 on a cliffhanger. I don't like being so critical and shitty on RUclips, I'm sure you have some great content, but I'm never going to know because this video makes me think you're not a reliable narrator. Sorry, I wish the best for you and your channel either way, I just recommend doing a little more research before acting as the final arbiter for what got a show cancelled. All the best.
Underrated comment and much more insightful than the video. As a longtime fan of the show, this video’s blatantly wrong information was definitely annoying.
@RotoMiner Which is why I plan on remaking it sometime next year.
@@mediamementosofficial looking forward to it :)
mike lu and og is the my name is earl on cartoon network
please do raising hope video
When are yall gonna review sprung? That show is really solid
Canceled all because they didn't make an agreement in the two week deadline to lease the studio....I really hate Hollyweird and their greedy nature...THEY need to make a list and start checking off all they people THEY screwed over!!!!
Hey I watched that show
it is an excellent show and got cancelled too soon
Community Vs the Network?
Hello
Mission hill is next time
Do bob burger vs the network
Dave?!
I remember liking it. I like stories where a scummy character decides to change, ergo Bojack Horseman
ash vs evil dead. it just felt like the writers never actually understood ash as a character (or rather only watched army of darkness), and just went off what he's known as. especially with the humor. ed2 and aod did have some sex jokes, but it wasn't like the main focus of the humor, same with the gross out humor. i just don't think gross out fits in with evil dead - i don't count blood and gore as gross out humor, but the fertility clinic scenes just don't fit in with the vibe of the movies, the video games, or the comics. know what i'm saying?
You really think My Name is Earl is dark??
Personally I felt Seasons 2 and 3 were ok. The Jail Storyline was fine up until they stretched it and out for too long and got very repetitive. Still holding out hope that it's get a proper conclusion.
What the heck is "My Name is Earl"?
Bruh
A Masterpiece.
@@aboundingvampirekiller2048 Of what?
I tried watching this show multiple times. People said it was really good, so I wanted to give it a chance. Unfortunately, the characters annoyed me so much I just couldn't get into it.
Ahh Pokémon lol

No the network did ruin it.
It really didn’t
I disagree with everything
