I asked what they feed it and he said live hoppers so listened. she is adult size near full grown and i always wait a week sometimes 2 till I offer her a new mouse
Love that you said they are not stupid animals. They know who’s who and what you are about. It just takes more time to gain their trust but, once you have it they demonstrate affection in their own way. Thank you for speaking about the emotional needs and responses of reptiles, these are magnificent animals. I consider myself blessed for the opportunity to care for and learn from them. Cheers from Toronto Canada.
I recently got my first pet snake, a 3 month old baby corn, but I've had a lot of issues with feeding him and would love some advice! I handled him once a week after i got him and fed him 48 hours after handling, he had a great feeding response but he regurgitated that first meal around 8 hours after the feed, I did not handle or feed him again for 12 days. When I gave him the second meal it was just a pinkie head and he took it after about 5 minutes and did not regurgitate it (hurray!) I did a short 10 min handling session 48 hours after the second feed and haven't handled again since as he didnt take the session well and gave me a warning strike. I attempted his 3rd feed again today with another pinkie head thawed to very slightly above room temp and he just utterly refused to take it despite showing signs of hunger. He has 5 hides, lots of clutter and a large water dish, the warm side sits between 82-85°F and the cool side sits at 75°F, his humidity typically sits at 35% on the warm side which is warm but i try to mist twice a day to keep it up and on the cool side its about 45%. Any advice on getting him on a normal feeding schedule or are there any supliments i can add to his water so he can get some vitamins when he won't take his meal? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
So glad I ran across this video. Very helpful. My African egg eater came in a day ago. She’s young and frightened from being shipped. She’s been hiding since her arrival. I put my hand in her habitat to adjust something today and she came out to check out my hand. Later, I held a small quail egg and she came out to check it out, but didn’t eat it. She explored once since then but back in hiding now. I hope she gains more confidence as the days go by. Your snakes are gorgeous! I’m hoping my gal will be as happy as yours when she is acclimated to her new home. Thank you for this video.
Thanks so much for this video! I got a 2yr old ball python a week ago and when I first brought him home he was super active for 2 days or so exploring his new home and has since retreated to his hide and I barely see him anymore. It's hard to be patient, I'm just so eager to hold him. BUT I also want him to have a secure bond with me and trust me. This video helped encourage me that I'm not doing anything wrong and he's just taking his time to get settled, that's all. Thank you!
Hi there! I just wanted to say thank you for making videos like this for those that are thinking of getting into reptiles or just need some advice from an experienced keeper. I am very interested in getting a boa and have been doing my research. Your channel has been by far my favorite these past couple of months. Very informative and a nice range of topics. Keep up the good work and I look forward to watching your channel grow!
That's awesome to hear, thank you! If you have any questions along the way feel free to drop them in the comments or hit up the intrepid exotics facebook page, I try to keep up with them and do video responses as I can!
Thank you for the information! I just got my snake a couple days ago and I haven't seen him since I put him in the enclosure. I was getting a bit worried he was dead or really stressed out.
Did you custom build the wooden cage on the bottom? Do you seal the edges for humidity? Do you know what would be a safe silicone to use on an enclosure? I want to make sure water won't seep out of the one I have since it is a put together enclosure. Just because I'll be using some water underneath the top layer of substrate for humidity mixed into the coco husk.
I did build the one on the bottom, it's just standard white silicon I used, let it dry and air out. No special seals around the doors but I keep ambient humidity 50-60%, have a soaking water basin in the enclosure and spray it regularly.
Thank you so much for the video... I recently got my corn snake..he is about 6 months...I read lot of blogs where people suggested to try to hold often for snake to get used to being handled... I am not handling him that often, maybe 2-3 times a week..but I think I started badly and started interacting right away when I got him... He is always hiding, comes out at night only... You said they'll remember the bad experiences...my question is can I start fresh, maybe just interact during feeds for a month or so...will it help with his confidence? Any other advice will be greatly appreciated... Thanks again
Hello! You have some things in your favor with this one, if he's only 6 months old then he's still in his insecure stage so the hiding-defensiveness is pretty normal. A couple times a week handling is good so long as ya try to time it when the snake seems more outgoing, typically if mine are curled up resting I leave em be til I see em moving around more; I think it makes them feel more "hunted" if I go into their hide after em. Barring any really traumatic stuff he should be fine given some time. I think this stuff is easier with big snakes because we naturally respect them more and pay more attention to their frame of mind because we have a vested interest in not getting hurt...that's an easy thing to bypass with smaller snakes but to build that relationship we have to be just as respectful of a 3 ft corn as we would be an 18ft retic. I think one of the most important things is to minimize the time "chasing" the snake in order to handle by setting up the enclosure so it's easy to simply get it lifted out, supported and secure as quickly as possible while still being slow enough to allow it time to understand what's happening, if that makes sense. It's that time first going in that's always the most frightening, especially for a small snake, and if we minimize that time that it's frightened it helps. Again, I think it will just take a little time and it should come around, the key isn't the amount of handling though...we can't put a number on "times per week", it's in the quality. Timing handling with their mood and keeping it smooth will make a good relationship with them even if it's only handling every week or two for awhile. Keep us posted on how he's doing!
@@IntrepidExotics thank you so much for all your suggestions... I surely need to rearrange his hides to make it easier to pick him up... I keep you posted... Thanks again for all the great work and your guidance to us newbies..
Great snakes 🐍 At night time do I need to run a red light Or just the regular heat lamp because I see different things where people say run red light at night and some say don't
Thank you! Red lights are really useless for snakes and it's believed they can see it which just keeps light on them 24-7. I don't keep red lights on any of.my reptiles.
What about if theyre eating and not afraid while being handled, is it ok to pull the hide to handle 1-2 times a week? Or better to just wait. My girl uaed to come out on her own but she ia hiding more now, had her a few months
I tend to go off cues they give me. If they seem active I take them out, if not I tend to let them be. Good way to naturally cycle through handling with a bunch of different animals :-)
why no intro?! i loved that intro it was super professional and to the point. im sure you have your reasons and im loving the vids man! thank you. #snakedad #boaDad
Thank you! I stay on the fence about the intro, some folks love it and many skip right through it after seeing it a time or ten. When I look at my analytics I look for viewer drop-off then work on improving those parts so i can make the best experience for the viewers and often even the best intros will lose a good percentage of folks. So, I may start putting it back in and see what response it gets, but with the goal of keeping as many folks as engaged in the content as i can :-)
Just subscribed, this is fantastic and exactly what I needed . Three days ago, got 7 month old male royal python. He never leaves his hide. As you mentioned I will now add another hide on the cooler side. I've interacted with him twice and very friendly. Question - is it OK to lift up hide if taking him out or to check on him. Question 2- if he's in his hide when I go to feed do I dangle the large mouse at the entrance to his hide so he can see and smell it. If he shows no interest and doesn't strike, will I leave the mouse at the entrance to hide. (Will be thawed mouse, but heated in some warm water) thank you.
Welcome aboard! It's fine to lift the hide, but that's a good time to take a bite so definitely lift it with a hook, even well socialized snakes can strike upon waking or for a food response. With my smaller snakes that have hides I do hang the prey in front of the opening and if they don't immediately take it ill leave it there for an hour or so. Just have to confirm they ate it and didn't pull it inside and leave it to rot. Mine have taken prey before, dropped it and not eaten. Rate but it happens.
I really dont get the swing temp. Mine equalizes regardless of what I do. If I keep hot side at 85, than the cool side slowly but surely becomes 85. Ive messed with it and messed with it and dont get it.
Just got a carpet python its 9 weeks old baby had her for a week now couldnt get her to feed i put her in an enclosure straight away but she doesnt look stress at all she hangs on her tree all day shes super active at night tried to feed her but she just isnt interested she hasnt ate in a week the breeder said she eats 1 fuzzy rat once a week. Should i wait another week or so?
Yea, I wouldn't stress it much. I typically feed weekly and if someone refuses I simply offer them again the following week. Sometimes it takes em a bit to get used to a new environment
Im having the hardest time getting my Wild caught Amazon tree boa to eat I figure just wait it out but I’ve offered it live hopper twice in the past and a fuzzy mouse today
Sounds silly, but when it comes to ATB ive had luck rubbing dead feeder lizards on fresh killed rodents. I had the same issue with a GTP too. Eventually I was able to stop rubbing dead lizards on the fresh killed rodents and switched to f/t and they still kept taking them. Can't guarantee itll work, but worst case you are only out about 7 bucks for a feeder lizard. I hope it eats for you soon.
Hey mate!, I just bought a childrens python hatchling yesterday and i have an awesome tank for it just a standard small square glass tank. Substrate, hides, fake plants etc. Ive got the heat right for a few days and checked temps constantly. Getting a temp gun tomorrow so i can read surface temps. She is such a sweet girl and got her out of the plastic container shes in and she loved being on my hand she coiled my thumb and wouldnt let go. Shes a sweetheart! Flicking her tongue in my face and gripping onto my hand. Did this for about 10 mins or so. Then held my hand in the enclosure and let her sus it out and get off my hand in her own time. She very slowly unwound off my hand and went in. She seemed super happy, checked everything out over and over. She seemed like she wanted to come out though and was almost glass surfacing at times and going round all four sides of the tank etc. She seemed so happy and was up in all the fake plants etc. Found her water bowl and rested her neck in it. Shes so cute! I think i got lucky she seems like the perfect baby. I also picked the biggest and healthiest of the babies and shes the sweetest too! Woo! Im just worried now because shes not come out for 24hrs and i cant seem to find her in the tank. The only place could be shes tucked up in her hide? According to the paper the breeder gave me she hasnt shed for almost 3 months!! What the!? Please help! Im scared shes sick or dying or something lol!
Babies will hide for periods of time, especially the first few weeks at times all depending on the individual. As long as the parameters are right I wouldn't worry about them hiding, that's what they do :-)
Hard to know when or if to handle them, I've had my 8mo Corn for 9 days, no handling yet obviously, just feeding and keeping the water and moss hide clean. She isn't actively curious when I'm in the viv but she eats well. Haven't seen her poop which I understand can be pretty common early on. She's also very small for her age (her sister was twice the size) and can only manage double pinkies at the moment until I can get her out to assess/weigh her. I'm worried about how long to leave her before handling, be it another week or a month. Just don't know if I need to wait til she's ready, or if I'm supposed to just reach in and grab her.
There's many cases where they are handled right out of the egg, moved to new enclosures, moved for cleanings, ect. At 8 mo old after already giving some time to acclimate to the new enclosure like ya did I would definitely be doing some handling sessions. Briefly as much as a couple times a day to let it get comfortable.
@@IntrepidExotics thanks, I appreciate the advice, can't get it many places now. I got a calendar schedule set up for starting handling this weekend, feeding every 6 days and no handling 48 hours after feed. I'll be handling her over a tub, not in her enclosure as she's a wiggler and I don't want to panic 👍
