The wonderful Christmas carols that my mum and dad introduced me to. I celebrate Christmas with these songs and I remember them with awe and great respect. RIP both of them
My favourite Christmas hymn, when I was a child in Africa, everything was so magical, during this period of my life. Christmas was beautiful. after a whole year of churching, I always looked forward to Christmas, now I am a millennial and life is not as fantastical and magical as I thought, but coming back to this tunes....
I know what you mean. But... life is actual MORE "magical" than our hearts even desire, as the Christmas truth says, for the Christmas message tells us: GOD BECAME MAN. What is more "magical" than THAT!? AND... it's TRUE! Christianity is, in the English Englishman C. S. Lewis' words, "myth become REALITY." Or, to quote Tolkien, Christianity is the GREATEST "fairy tale", for it has ALL. the elements of the BEST fairy tale, and... IT'S TRUE! Merry Christmas, my friend. This is all true. And, if we stay close to Christ and His Church, we'll get to heaven. It's true.
There is nothing else so sublime and at the same time so magnificent as the Choir of Kings College, Cambridge. Seeing them live should be on everyone's bucket list!
plato socrates yes, and it would be but I'm scared of flying. My ear canals pipped like crazy even though I chewed gum and put cups over my ears. It was years ago but I never forgot. So I hope they visit my parish church in America someday. That church has a men and boys choir, by the way. I feel like I am in England when I hear them.
plato socrates it's on mine but airplane travel is "ruff" (pun intended) on my ears. Not surplice or cassock, but ruff. The best choir in the world in the most beautiful church in the world. I have never seen a fan vaulted ceiling in person, just in pics; it is stunning. And those large, Tudor arched windows are as beautiful as the fan vaulted ceiling. Sir David's arrangements are THE BEST. My favorite hymn tune is FOREST GREEN. I'm glad FOREST GREEN has year-round lyrics (O Spirit of the Living God, I Sing the Almighty Power of God, O Lord of Life to Thee We Lift) so I don't have to wait until Christmas to hear it.
plato socrates by the way, it was only to Florida from New York, that flight when my ears pipped and popped like crazy. (It was decades ago and I still remember it.) I have never been out of the East Coast, much less overseas, but that flight seemed like it was as long as an overseas flight. Maybe I should forget the gum and use cups *and* earplugs! I do want to see the KCC someday, and visit Leith Hill Place (where Rafe Vaughan Williams lived for a long time), and see Princess Diana's memorial garden in London.
If I flew from the USA to the UK to hear the Choir of Kings College in person, the bucket would have to be on my lap in preparation for any wrongful exit of airplane dining.
When i listen to choirs like this i feel the feeling of Christmas .... Perfect, soothing, well balanced singing .... Wow .... Merry Christmas from Sri Lanka.
My favourite christmas corral, from a child, and took part in church, and programs for school, my mom died dec 27, she brought us in a christian home, i miss her this time of year.
mrab150 This is one of my favorites. My most favorite Christmas song is O Little Town of Bethlehem, the FOREST GREEN tune. St. Louis, the American tune used for O Little Town of Bethlehem, is a boring tune. I love FOREST GREEN.
@@theodorus3404 Thank you! I just got a picture in my mind of golden threads of messages of love going all across the world. A vast, growing web. It's a joy to be able to send love like this in this transformational and blessed time we're experiencing. God bless you.
Listening to this in London as the snow falls outside... It really is a beautiful time of year, celebrating the joys of life. I wish you all a Happy Christmas
david dorian I agree. I don't like "cultural flotsam" either. By the way, my most favorite melody ever, since 1988, is Forest Green. God bless Rafe Vaughan Williams for composing it! Sir David Willcocks wrote a wonderful descant for O Little Town of Bethlehem too. All his descants are exceptional.
david dorian ...and since my local public radio station doesn't play enough choral music, or enough music by "Rafe" and Handel, I gave away my radio to a friend. Now I just listen on RUclips, when I can hear all "Rafe" all the time and/or all Handel all the time during the year, and during the Christmas season, all "Rafe", Sir David, and Handel.
Well, to be fair, I like to divide the "secular" Christmas from the "religious" Christmas. I may prefer the latter, but the division is necessary as Christmas becomes, unfortunately, increasingly commercialized.
I can just imagine God smiling down upon His creation, if only for a brief moment, thinking "this...this is just part what makes it all worth it"...truly music worthy of our Lord's ears.
Pia Fleig it's in my Top Twenty favorites, for sure. My favorite is O Little Town of Bethlehem. Tune: FOREST GREEN *not St. Louis* 🇺🇸💚🇬🇧I am an American Anglophile 🇺🇸💚🇬🇧
Hudson Bailey yes, and when I get over my fear of flying I will plan to go to Cambridge to see the nine Lessons and Carols. My ears pipped and popped badly the one time I flew, years ago, and that was only from North to South. So I have been scared to fly again on an airplane.

Hudson Bailey oops, I meant I am scared to fly *on an airplane* "Flying to heights uncharted, as you said", will not hurt my ears at all, and I will enjoy it. In spite of the misunderstanding, I like your reply. Thank you!
Hudson Bailey p.s. Do you know the English version of O Little Town of Bethlehem? That tune (FOREST GREEN by Rafe Vaughan Williams) is the best ever. I listen to it several times a day every day. By the way, please subscribe to my channels, both the old one and this one (my old channel is Claire ForestGreenOrganGeek Dixon). There are lots of videos of me playing the organ, both the real thing and my pretend organ (electronic keyboard), "Forrester".
ABSOLUTELY! The "American" version becomes commonplace and sort of drags where "Forest Green" draws the "Keats" out of myself, "How lovely thy VERDURE." Are we not grateful for KINGS. Yes, I'd savor your ivory.
Beautiful hymn. Beautifully sung. I always liked it from childhood and although im not an active Christian and have become agnostic I still love the message.
Sir David!!! I loooooooooove your arrangements! The descant in this carol....WOW!!!! Balloons to heaven for you! Your hymns and carols made an Anglophile out of me in 1994. I listen to them All. Year. Round! 👏👍👏👍👏👍

it simply the most beautiful descant for the third verse. Sounds simple... but it is full of passing notes.... and actually harder to pull-off than it sounds... beautifully arranged by Wilcocks

This carol is in D major. As an amateur musician and choir member, I notice and enjoy four part harmony especially the little details. Great descant (with a soaring top A). Phenomenal major sixth - descant D and melody F#!
Merry Christmas everyone!
Western Christianity is just simply beautiful. I really hope these carols are sung for centuries to come.
