    Hi Tom. My 1st tragedy happened. I picked up 3 spiders from fear not and they were great. My 4th was my freebie a P. Sazimai sling that was one of the smallest spiders I've ever seen. I've had her for a couple of weeks and noticed mold growing in her vial so I pulled her out pulled out the infected moss and but her back in with a little spritz of water. Couldn't find hff er in the vial so I freaked out and started pulling the substrate out. Tom I squished her. My fumbling foolish digging killed my spider. My heart hurts so bad. I'm so sorry to drop this on you but I had to tell someone. I found h er r little broken body 5his morning and it tore my heart apart. I think I'll avoid tiny tiny slings for a while. I guess I wasn't ready. All my juveniles and other slings are thriving. Sorry to pour my heart out I just felt I needed to get it out. Have a good day bud.

      Hello, Erik! I'm so very sorry to hear about this. Accidents happen; I think that we've ALL had moments where we've done something that has put a spider at risk of death. In some cases, we get lucky and the spider lives. In others, we aren't so fortunate. God knows that I've had some super close calls myself, and only luck saved the poor spider. Try not to let it get to you and instead look for lessons you can use in the future.

    Hey Tom just wanted to update and thank you. I'm the one who accidentally killed my tiny P. Sazimai sling. It really shook me, but I sat back and thought about my collection and how well it's doing I have 17 spooders and they're all eating and molting( the temps went up and everyone popped they're zippers) except my P. Irminia but they pulled her molt out when I bought her. My confidence grew. I'm the kinda guy who gets up dusts himself off and gets back on the horse. So I got another sling and she's doing great. She even molted once though you couldn't tell. I think she got smaller😂. Thank you for your kind words and support. Your videos and podcast have inspired me to try things I wouldn't have and take big steps in the hobby because you have me the confidence to take them. Thank you so much and have a great day.

    Hey Tom, love the video (and the hair!)
    I've definitely seen the same things you have reported here. I truly hate to poo-poo a species but I really just want to share my experiences with you. This was a species I wanted to keep from very early on and was one of the first slings I got. I have raised 4 up to mature males (except the most recent one, I was so done with him I sent him to my buddy to raise cause clearly I'm doing something wrong with these guys). I do not like to use the word aggressive when referring to animals and especially not with spiders, but if there's any spider that deserves it, in my albeit limited experience with only 4 specimens, this is it. My first 3 were nuts and would throw up threat postures so hard they would fall over on their backs and just lay there, which was cute but also made me feel bad, like, dude why are you so unhappy? They all had plenty of room and depth, burrows, plenty of foliage, etc. where they could hide adequately. After my last specimen I've honestly given up on this species because I'm clearly doing something wrong that is making them act this way and I've made every possible husbandry adjustment and I'm *just not getting it.* I received an immature (about 3 inches) male from a friend who had to rehome and this was hands down the craziest and most (I'm going to use aggressive here because he wasn't defending anything) aggressive spider I've ever encountered. When I opened the enclosure to feed him he would come charging out of the SAFE CONFINES of his burrow, out of the safety of his enclosure, and throw up threat postures, slap, fangs out and venom dripping, and most of the time he'd threat pose so aggressively he'd fall over backwards into his enclosure. Literally just walking in the room caused him to throw up threat poses and half the time I went to check on him he'd come out of his burrow and do laps around the enclosure and end up on his back from threat posing. I like to think I'm a fairly established keeper and a diligent researcher and fast learner. I have no idea what I saw with these sazimai. I'm not sure if it's just because all of them were males and males of any species in my experience tend to be a little more high strung especially as they approach the final moult, but wow. There was no reason for these spiders to leave the safety of their burrows and come out of the enclosure at me. I totally recognise that my experiences don't mean that every L. sazimai is a demon but wow. The majority of my collection is Omothymus/Lampropelma/Phormingochilus/Chilobrachys/Pokies/etc. and I have had zero issues with any of those, but the L sazimai, which I've actually heard recommended as a beginner, is the one that has consistently given me attitude and while it's not scary or anything this species is just clearly not comfortable with whatever setups I've given them and I've tried literally everything. If I'd caught them out in the open and they threat posed, sure, my bad. But this guy came out of his burrow and came at me with the intent to do harm. Basically I've had 4 L. sazimai that act like what everyone says OBTs are, and I have about 20 Old Worlds who I could probably handle if I felt so inclined. I'm so glad you mentioned that they do not make good beginners cause even to someone with experience I frankly wouldn't recommend these (based on my experience). They're gorgeous spiders and super cool but the ones I had really had a massive attitude problem and again this could just be males being males but I'm quite discouraged from keeping them since they appear to be perpetually stressed in my care so I doubt I'll attempt keeping these again. I want to make it clear that I don't hate this species or any spider for that matter I just really want to emphasise how much I really do not believe these are appropriate beginners in any way shape or form. I know they are recommended as beginners overseas so maybe it's something in the air or maybe Europeans are just nuts (I'm Russian so I can confirm the last part :) )
    Keep up the awesome work!
    - Charlotte

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Год назад +1

      Hey, Charlotte! Hahaha Ahhhhhh...the good old days when I HAD hair. haha I don't know if I mentioned it in this video, but both of my female went through a VERY defensive stage where I would get threat postures any time I opened up their enclosures. I think that it probably started around the 3" mark, and lasted for several years. The one in this video calmed down after a few molts (and honestly, seemed much more calm in this enclosure). The other finally did as well. I've had folks say that these are a good beginner species, but I always caution folks that they can be quite a handful. Honestly, I think that my two, at one point, were the most defensive spiders that I have ever kept. Thanks for chiming in with your experiences, as they mirror mine!

      Also I've noticed in the wild that it isn't uncommon for multiple specimens to inhabit the same area so I wonder if they could be housed communally in captivity?

    I dont like rating each spider by whether its "beginner friendly" or not. It makes it sound bad and scary to newcomers. By all means, recommend against any species you dont think would mix well with the uninitiated, I just dont like the label. I started on a P metallica yada yada yada.... BUT if you do the research and know what to expect its not so bad. I think it's more alluring that way.
    Just my random two cents, also this is such an awesome species i think that everyone should own one. Even the normies.

      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +1

      Hi, Spider King. I started doing that because when I do these care videos, that it usually one of the first questions asked. I give my two cents on whether or not I think the spider would be a good species for a beginner, and folks can take it or leave it. This happens to be one of the species that folks pick up when they just get into the hobby, and find that they are scared of them when they go through their defensive stage. I totally get that some folks can be ready for them, but after spending years speaking with beginners, I've found that many are not. I would like to thing that I present the information in a way during the video that gives people a heads up without sensationalizing the reasons why I think that they may not be a great one to start with. Thanks for chiming in!

    Tom, I like your videos in general but please keep it mind we are here to see spiders. Your narration is excellent, explanations and informations are great but you have to show the tarantula during the narration instead of your face. This video is more the 11 minutes long and you show the T about a minute between 5:45-6:58. Meaning about 10 minutes we are watching you or the enclosure from outside.
    Can you imagine you are watching Nat Geo and you have to watch Sir David Attenborough’s face instead of the animals for 55 minutes out of the 60 mins of the show? 😂
    Please consider show us the spiders way more time. Thanks!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 лет назад +1

      Hi, Szilard! Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply. Although I appreciate what you are saying, this video was as much about the rehousing and the setup as it was about the spider. I've had many folks asking me about the bioactive setups I was doing, hence the narration. And, a while back I tried to change my format, and fans of my channel were not having it. People who enjoy seeing the rehousings (and who have been watching my channel for a while) don't mind this format. I do other videos that are that are more edited that show all spider. The rehousing ones, we get what we get. Again, I get what you're saying, but there are many other channels out there I'm sure that may appeal to you more if you're looking fore more spider and less talking. You may be here to see spiders, but most of my audience is here for the information. :) Thanks!

      Tom Moran Hey Tom, everybody is here for the information you are providing, myself included, it is not the point. As I said in my first comment the narration and the information are excellent. My point was if you can show the tarantula more - giving the same amount of information as a background narration - would be more interesting. Anyway thanks for the reply, don’t change anything if you don’t want to, let’s say it is perfect as you made it, no room for improvement. Thanks!

      @TomsBigSpiders  5 лет назад +1

      @@szilardmaricel2960 It's not "perfect", it's just how I do the rehousing videos. I don't know how long you've been watching me, but I covered this topic before. I know this is an old video so please bear with me, I assumed that this is the best place to ask:
    I was wondering how your Sazimai behaves, since mine throws me so much for a loop. Mine is a 3 inch DLS juvenile female and is the worst eater out of the entire collection that I have. She takes a very long amount of time to sense and eat the live prey item I put there, in most cases a lateralis, that I just put her back to check each morning. It's weird to me since when she was younger, she eats like a champ. She also does this weird thing where she stays completely motionless when I go and check her, even when I lightly prod her with a soft brush. But as soon as she feels the click that happens when I put the lid of her enclosure back, she bolts like mad.
    Bottom line: Is this normal for a Sazimai?
    EDIT: I also wanted to see your opinion on a weird matter since it seems prevalent within the Philippine community: Do they get stressed because of springtails? I've heard a few keepers give their opinion on the Sazimai specifically that theirs do not like the company of springtails at all.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +1

      Hello! Well, I have two adult females. Both went through a long stage where they were VERY defensive and would threat pose and charge at you if disturbed. Mine were so bad at one point, that they would actually threat pose the prey items I would drop in before calming down and finally eating later on. They would bolt whenever their cages were opened, and a couple times they almost made it out of the enclosure. So, what you're describing isn't far off from what I have seen from mine. As long as yours is eating, it should be fine.
      As for springtails, I have one in a bioactive enclosure with springtails in it, and she is fine. BUT, if the population of the springtails gets to big, and if there is no place for her to get away from them, that could possibly be an annoyance for her.

      Long story short, Brazil has apparently never allowed legal exportation of its spiders out of the country. That would technically make all species endemic to Brazil illegal to import and sell. Although the US Fish and Wildlife hasn't been enforcing this for decades, there have recently been some issues with imports being seized. Right now, folks are trying t figure out if we can have species that have been commonly bred in the hobby for years grandfathered in so that the Lacey Act doesn't apply to state-to-state sales. There really is not documentation to read, as Brazil has said they are illegal, and the US can chose to take their word for it and treat them as such.

      So.... potentially, they could just disappear from every vendor along with other South American species?

      @@river4382 Yes, this could potentially mean that all species from Brazil would be illegal to import, trade, or sell. They would inevitably disappear from the hobby in the US.
