    My new one just walked onto my hand and walked into its new home. So far it’s way more laid back than the pumpkin patch was as a sling or metallica. Hopefully it continues. From what I read on them, they seem to either be very defensive or chill….not a whole lot of in between.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, mine have calmed down a bit over the years, but they both went through a stage where they were the two most defensive spiders in my collection!

    Just got my first one as a sling. How long do they roughly take to grow? It’s quite small now but excited to start seeing the adult colouration. Brilliant Video. Thank you.

      Hello, Evie! Mine grew at a medium rate. They started to show some blue off at around 2" (it was a slight bluish tinge). I think that mine hit about 1.5-1.75" in the first year. Here is a video with this one during its first rehousing:

      Here is the next rehousing video:

      Amazing. Thank you for the reply. 😊There isn’t that much info online about these still, that I can find anyway, so your videos really do help. Can’t wait for her to start showing colours. I’ll have a look through al of those now ☺️

      I only have one of these spiders but with mine the blue or purpleness totally depends on the angle of the light you shine on it. if you have a dark room and hold a light next to your face and shine it on the spider it will look really purple. if you hold the light away so its off to the side of the spider, like at right angle to your line of sight, all its purpleness disappears. and if you just look at it in a normally lit room it has slight hints of purplyness but just mostly grey/brown. the only way I can think for that to happen is if the colour is structural not pigmented

    Thanks for the update. I bought 4 from petcenterusa myself and I find that there's not much info on this species out there so anything you post is much appreciated. Mine are only 1/4" slings right now but you're right about them being little jerks and liking to bolt. I've only had them a couple of weeks and I've already had one bolt from the enclosure as soon as I opened it. Another latched on to my fingertip when I was trying to prod it back into the enclosure. Didn't penetrate the skin but I've never had a sling try that before. :D

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  7 лет назад

      See, no one spoke about the behavior when these first became popular! I was actually surprised at how skittish/defensive they can be. I mean, it's mostly bluster, but they always seem cranky. Hahaha Sounds like yours act exactly like mine.

  • @Dovietail
    @Dovietail 6 лет назад +5

    Tom, this video broke my heart. I also got one of those slings at about the same time from pet center USA, but it didn't make it! I had her for about 16 months, and then she just failed to recover from a molt. I've only ever lost two slings, and this was one of them. Sort of made me happy to see how well yours have done. :-)

  • @Fruchtpudding
    @Fruchtpudding 7 лет назад +3

    I have 4 slings of this species and they all grow really fast and eat extremely well. It seems they don't make burrows themselves but they have readily accepted the ones I poked into the substrate for them and all 4 of them sit in them the entire day (they sit outside every night though). Only after molting to 4th instar recently have they started modifying it.
    I think they just adapt to whatever you give them.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  7 лет назад +1

      I've heard some folks say there's are totally terrestrial, and others say that theirs are fossorial. When you look up how they live in the wild, like you said, they are very adaptable. My first two were totally burrowers, while my newest sling just sits on top.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 лет назад

      Yeah, they can be quick little boogers. haha Mine grew at a medium rate. They both ate well and my temps are in the 70s (up to 80 sometimes in the summer). I think that it took mine about a year and a half to start showing some blue. Both are now big, gorgeous (if a bit crazy) females. haha. Thanks!

    @WestCoastArachnids 7 лет назад +1

    Can't wait for my 3 to get bigger so I can have fun transferring them lol. They are very stunning looking spiders for sure. Yours looks awesome!
    I hear ya about the heat. I keep my windows open all winter long and when my kids come over for a visit they are freezing and I have to close the windows and I tell ya, even in the winter months it gets too warm for me inside just with the windows closed and no heat on. But I do have a lot of electronics running so they throw off a lot of heat.
    Hope all is well. Cheers!

      You have to let me know how yours are attitude-wise. Mines are a bit grumpy and skittish all the time. haha Thanks!
      Yeah, I'm a winter guy, too. I wear a vest through most of the winter because I overheat much too easy. My bedroom is an icebox (poor Billie has gotten used to layering up over the years!). When we have company, someone always mentions that it's chilly. Of course, the hottest room in the house is the T room, and I spend a lot of time in there...sweating. haha

    @MiniZooTube 7 лет назад +1

    We have 3 of this species. All three just used hides we gave them. They are extremely skittish and bolt around. Making it more difficult to get them on camera. 2 of the 3 are more blue. supposedly this species has different colour based on sex, we cannot confirm this. Ours do not threat pose. They bolt around like a P metallica in light.

    • @MiniZooTube
      @MiniZooTube 7 лет назад

      We have 3 at different sizes. one is around 3, one is 1.5 and another is just 1. the 1.5 and 1 started out at the same size. 1.5 inch sized one doesn't have any blue, while the 1 inch has a little bit under the right light. the 3 inch one has a lot of blue.

    Hey sir, loved the video i subbed. I just bought one myself and it’s about half an inch in size. I have small meal worms and crickets about the same size as her. I havent seen her eat yet. Is the food too big or not good enough? I bought her today by surprise and havent done a lot of research 😰. I also can’t really find good information about it online. Any help would be usefull. I got cactus dirt as substrate and have a temperature of about 23-26 celsius. I also got the necessary vitamins and calcium etc. It’s just my first spider ever and im scared i will fuck this up

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 лет назад

      Thanks so much, Jordan for the kind words and the sub. Have you seen my sling guide videos? They are a bit long, but I tried to cover all of the points I could think up. With this species, start them with a couple inches of moist substrate. 22-26 is a great range for them. They do well at room temperature (down to 20) so don't worry about using a heat mat or anything. They don't need extra vitamins or calcium. There are some that believe that extra calcium can cause molting issues (NOT scientifically proven).

      ruclips.net/video/rz6_AvqxM_k/видео.html
      If you get a chance, watch these and let me know if you have any other questions! They should burrow to start. You can prekill food if you think it's too big and leave it right outside of the den entrance.

    Hi Tom I have a P. sazimai sling 1cm maybe, what I would like to know is what are the first signs of pre-molt, it has a dark line that's not long appeared is this the first sign or is this just the heart showing through as it becomes more plump.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  7 лет назад

      Hi, Micheal! When mine were smaller, I could tell when they stopped eating. They were excellent eaters and would only turn down a meal when they were getting ready to molt. It was tough to get a good visual on them because they spent most of their time hiding. My small sling (about 1 cm as well) will get a very fat and shiny abdomen (and will refuse food). If the dark line runs down the back of its abdomen, then yes, that is likely the heart your seeing. I hope that helps!

    • @MiChAeL197258
      @MiChAeL197258 7 лет назад +1

      It's very helpful, the P. sazimai took a dubia nymph two days ago, so I'm assuming it's not in pre-molt yet, it's tiny, so when it's in pre-molt the abdomen will darken the same as my other T's? Thanks for getting back to me Tom, your a star. The same applies to my B. albopilosum, it's about the same size but does have some black setae at the rear of the abdomen, the P. sazimai is all one colour, but that's what I thought - it was it's heart I was seeing as it became more plump.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  7 лет назад

      It should darken up a bit, but they don't have a lot of hair at that size, so it's not as apparent. My little sling is in premolt now, and her abdomen isn't particularly dark. It WILL get large and shiny, almost like the body of a tick when it's bloated. It'll become more obvious as they put on some more size. Hey, no problem!

    • @MiChAeL197258
      @MiChAeL197258 7 лет назад

      Thanks again Tom, I'm sure as you said it will become apparent when it reaches the pre-molt stage, as you said it is all one colour at this point, so it should become obvious. Have a nice relaxing Sunday pal.

      I had nine and they've gotten along fantastically. I got them as .5"-.75" slings back in June of last year, and I just had my first mature male.

      Insane, right? I raised three other balfouri from 1.5" slings to adults (they were kept separately (and it took the males close to 3 years to mature, even with an extra inch.
