My church organized a hurricane relief down in Florida and we went to cut up some trees that had fallen on vehicles and houses. Everyone made fun of me for my long bar, Telling me I was "compensating" for something, you wouldn't believe the jokes. My saw was the only reason that we could do half of the jobs that we took because the trees were so big. Everybody else got pinched because they ignored compression, I could go on and on but buckin basically I just want to say thank you for your teaching and experience. I've taken that, honed my skills, and blessed other people's lives with it

My parents sold firewood in the 80’s and 90’s dad started with Homelite then moved on to Poulan then Stihl and Husqvarna. I always liked the Husky’s better. Dad and I had a little contest me using the 272xp and him with his 044 Stihl, I got him by 4-5 seconds. Dad has been gone a long time 😢 still have the old 272 running strong! Ive got short legs, so a 24" bar gets me to the dirt. Long bar is most definitely easier on the back. As far as the touch up filing, when logging with my dad, i would file my chain as many times as it took to keep it razor sharp. If the saw isn't pulling itself through the wood, its dull, or the rakers need to be touched. A sharp cain is a safe chain! Thank you, and have a wonderful day.

I think Ewen should come to BC! Where we grow trees! A special guest. The kid has such a good attitude. It would be so cool for him to hold and hear a ported saw. Axes are cool, but I knew what I wanted after I ran my parents Homelite XL in 1978 at the age of 12. The rest is history. There is a rare day I don't use a chainsaw. And, when well maintained, saws bring joy to my life. This includes all saws, band, circular, chain ,recip, and meat. I probably forgot one or two more. Easy cutting is a joy. Keep on spreading the word.

Hi Buckin, in reguards to your Stihl 500i. I suspect the fuel mapping curve of the M-tronics is what you take issue with on the 500i, hence all the 4 stroking before fully loaded. Because the saw is so strong they are trying to protect against a lean condition at all costs. The humid conditions of your region might be contributing to the issue vs Pennsylvania. It's all about fuel air mixture and you can't control that! Give the 500i a test run on an unusually dry day for you location and see if it makes a difference.

Love your videos here's my take on the long bar it just makes sense i worked as a lumberjack for 15 years in northern ontario and when i started i used a 16 inch bar because that's all they sold at the time .We cut trees anywhere from 4inch in diameter to 25 inches sometimes bigger but we were paid on a piecework system meaning the more you cut down and were brought to roadside with a cable skidder the more you were paid . So my point is when i was cutting down trees and cutting the branches off for 8 hours a day bending over would take its toll on your back so it didn't take long that i figure out i needed to go to with a longer bar and it made my life easier and i still use one today cutting fire would . keep those videos coming we can all learn something from them .

    • @scottleggejr
      @scottleggejr Год назад

They only sold a bar that long because chain links used to break. With a broken chain, you have the full power of that saw whipping that chain around. Chains don't break like they used to anymore. 💪

I've mentioned it a few times in past videos but long bars really are a game changer.
I cut mainly hardwood firewood and even though a 18' bar would cut 99.9% of the stuff that's not the reason I use a long bar.
If you're bending over cutting small blocks for firewood then the posture difference with a long bar makes a world of difference.
For reference I use a 60cc Stihl 340 with a full house full chisel chain.

Most saw shop salesman and folk in general directly relate bar length to wood diameter & its obvious why. You to buck or fall wood of a particular diameter, u need a bar length appropriate for that. But longer bars have other advantages, more cutters dividing up the work equates to longer intervals between sharpening, body position completely changes, u can stand up. Dont get me wrong I love a super lightweight 35cc rear handle MS201c for fast limbing of small diameter wood. But when running 65cc and up a nice 28"+ b/c is comfort.

Buckin, have you considered getting or making a bark spud to clean up those nasty trees? You could make one out of an old leaf spring pretty easily. Or do you just prefer the axe?

A leaf spring is what the old timers used here to peel pulp wood, then load them on rail cars by hand. We are not as tough as they were.

I upgraded my Stihl 025 to 18" bar from 16" ... they told me at the shop that's the longest bar that saw can handle.
Back pain can be managed with an exercise ball... build up your core strength and back pain will be better.

HI BUCKIN 😊😊 IVE seen chains like that be 4 U can sharpen both sides they won't stay sharp 1 side cuts and the other doesn't then the teeth on the chain get 2 where U can't sharp that 1 side or the last 2 teeth it's worth the time 😮😮 U are better off 2 put another chain on if U have clean the logs or wood U just have 2 do so 😊😊 or U will be sharpening the chain again cutting through dirt and sand and rocks are going 2 worst than that then U will 4 OR 5 times sharpen the chain 2 get it back 2 where it was be 4 / 2 where U were when U started 😮😮 U will get tired 😴😮 of that PDQ U will be doing more sharpening than cutting wood 😮😮 OMG 12 12 2O23

Lol that’s funny my partner isn’t a tree guy handles more of the landscaping side of business and when I’m running long bar I don’t carry very much I run it across log and use the bar to hold its weight whenever I can and he said to me last week why do you always rest the bar on the log or the ground or whatever.
I laughed and said because I want to be able to use my arms tomorrow

I know you prefer full house chain, but would you do a comparison on the 572 with a skiptooth chain to see how it compares to the full house with high rakers?
