  • Recently, I acquired a Sony TA-1120A which was built in late1960. It was the first Sony made ES series amplifier. This unit was built like a tank. It is still working fine even after 50 years of the age. I upgraded the power light to a LED bulb and made adjustment on DC bias of the power amp. The sound quality after services is superb.

    I just found one locally with the matching tuner, such a beautiful layout even inside. If i can come up with the right price, I'll buy it. Great video as always, just watch your long restoration video.

    I bought a TA1120A in Hong Kong ($200) in 1968. . Note: The Tone controls are NOT step Potentiometers, They are rotary switches which select individual filters.

    Hi, I have a UK TA1150. Would a 1.5 v led be ok for that as well?

      TA-1150 uses different type of pilot bulb - 110-125v miniature neon glow bulb.

    I dropped off the exact model to be serviced for a low hum in the "tone in/out" switch. My buddy, who is generally very knowledgeable when it comes to electronics repair, declined to service it because it appeared to be difficult to take apart and find the issue. Any recommendations or tips you can give me to relay to him would be appreciated.

      The hum noise usually comes from the grounding problem which may indicate there is a loose soldering joint in the circuit board or bad contact of a grounding wire inside the receiver. It may be also caused by other reasons. But it is the good start point for the troubleshooting.

    Nice video. Thanks! 2 questions.
    Did you consider recapping it?
    Did you do the ac bias procedure as well?

    • @VintageAudioFan
      @VintageAudioFan  4 года назад +2

      I am working on various repair projects at this moment, may be in the future may if I have time so I can recap it. I only do the idling current (dc bias) adjustment after the repair is done.

      @@VintageAudioFan you reckon ac bias is not needed?

    What have u used to clean the knobs and selectors?

    • @VintageAudioFan
      @VintageAudioFan  3 года назад +2

      It depends on the materials: "Brasso" for metal polish and "Meguiars Plastx" for plastic polish.

      @@VintageAudioFan btw.. I was referring to internal components. Can I use these products internally?

    • @VintageAudioFan
      @VintageAudioFan  3 года назад +2

      Sorry, the previous answer is for the external finish. If you refer to inside of the switches (selectors) or variable resistors, trimmers, potentiometers (volume/balance/tone control), you have to use electrical contact cleaners (i.e. Deoxit, Puretronics....). Because the internal materials are made for the contact of electronic signal.

      @@VintageAudioFan no problem. I wasn't clear enough. Many thanks! I'll look for these products and clean my vintage amp 😁 my TA-1120A switches are exactly like yours were before the cleaning. Thanks for the video!!
