This is a continuation from the last video. This video is to share how I use the oscilloscope to troubleshoot the problem of the preamplifier. In the end, It just needed to clean the potentiometer (volume control). Sometime the problem is easy to fix if using the right procedures.

This 11-minutes video clip has been edited (due to the copy right) and condensed from a 1 1/2 days of on-site recording. Please leave comments and thanks for watching.
Marantz 2230 (Unit #2) Repair Part 2 - Power Amplifier
Просмотров 38710 месяцев назад
This repair video was filmed in mid-April. Due to the situation, I finally have a free time to finish the editing today. The unusual high voltage measured at power amp output was caused by a defective transistor H752 (not the power transistors as I suspected at the beginning). So this repair video may help other DIY fans to deal with the same issue as I had.

    Have a GX-635D recently but it does not play, it powers up, but no green light comes on, nor any function works like rewind or record. Not sure what that would be. There is tape mounted on it. But no movement of the capstan or motor sound

    • @VintageAudioFan
      @VintageAudioFan 2 месяца назад

      From your descriptions, it seems that your GX-635D may have a defective power supply problem. I suggest to check the FUSE PC board TH-2040. There are four fuses on it. The followings are their power supply functions: (1) Fuse #2 - capstan motor (2) Fuse #3 - reel motors (3) Fuse #4 - record/play amplifiers (4) Fuse #5 - logic control board which handle play/stop/forward/reverse switch functions. If all fuses are good, then you may have defective components in the power supply board which requires further diagnose and repair.

      @@VintageAudioFan Thank you for your answer, I'll look into that as it is a good indicator and starting point to see if the problem is visible there. But a blown fuse is always an idicator of something failing thus in need of a check I've noticed that these are prone to transistor failure as well. Maybe that is what's the issue but until then I will tackle that first. Replacement shouldn't be a problem but maybe the lack of a scope or is it possible to work on it without a scope

      The data sheet shows 2SA697(PNP) - Pc: 0.5 W; Vcb: -65V; Vce: -60V; Ic: 0.7 A. I replaced it with my stocked transistor 2SB647A - Pc: 0.9 W; Vcb: -120V: Vce: -100V; Ic: 1 A which is an upgrade. It is paired with the 2SD667A (NPN). So 2SB647A/2SD667A should work.

I'm a novice into electronics and maybe please you give some hints where to start from. Thank you

    • @VintageAudioFan

      If there is a fluctuating voltage on DC offset and with a static/cracking noise, it is generally caused by a defective differential transistor in the power amplifier. I suggest to replace Q1 (2SA798) in the left channel on PCB (AF Ass'y AWK-061).

    • @georger.9514
      @georger.9514 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for your quick answer. I will try to swap them one to another to see if the problem moves to the other channel. What would be the correct substitute for the 2sa798 if the one on the left channel is defective? A matched (hfe and vbe) pair of ksa992fta would do the job? Thank you a lot and sorry for the disturbing.

    I need some advice on the cr 1020 receiver. When I turn off the power switch, there is a big bang in both speakers. I don't know where the error is and what should I check? When the receiver is on, the relay is protection, but I can't figure out what causes the boom in the speakers when it's off. Thank you in advance for the professional answer. Peter

      I had same problem before. I think if the receiver is out of the protection mode, it usually means the DC balance is near to 0 V. However, when there is a bad contact inside the relay, it always make noise or no sound to the speakers. I suggest to check the relay or replace it.

Any recommendations or tips you can give me to relay to him would be appreciated.

    • @VintageAudioFan
      @VintageAudioFan 3 месяца назад

      The hum noise usually comes from the grounding problem which may indicate there is a loose soldering joint in the circuit board or bad contact of a grounding wire inside the receiver. It may be also caused by other reasons. But it is the good start point for the troubleshooting.

    • @VintageAudioFan

      Yes. It should be same. The D907s were made for Japan domestic market. The circuit and parts in D907 are same as the 919. The difference is D907 needs a 100V AC power source which is required to buy a voltage converter transformer to bring down 110V to 100V for use in USA.

      Could be a number of things to check as well as motor run cap. These are AC reel motors so they do have motor phase advance caps- the reel switches in these decks which are the larger Alp switches to the rear are known to open and some short- maybe the fast wind one is shorting- you need to check with a meter- I have had two in my shop recently both with opposite effect.

      Yes. The adjustments for bias (idling current) are same. However, confirmation of Auto-A class function needs more than 20 mV (vs. idling) for M-65. And the service manual of M-60 shows exactly bias range which is 100-120 mV.
