It's an excellent album, yes...perfect, however, is an empty word that means very little. you're saying there's not one note, not one sound, anything that could possibly, in any sense, be changed, to anyone's taste, anywhere. give that word a rest, for your own sake, please.
I didn't fully appreciate them until I saw them live. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. And I happen to like his awkward dancing and chest pounding.
As someone who has been around him and his friends and family I can say “mad” isn’t the word I would use. Creative, emotive, unique, talented. Sam is pure genius as a front man and an absolute delight as a human.
@@GilaGone no, no, it might have been a curt statement but it's not negative, it's madness in the sense that.. have you seen that Robin Williams tribute video, "The Show's Over"? it has in it an old bit where a young Robin Williams says "you've got to be crazy, it's too late to be sane. you have to go full-tilt. because you're only given a little spark of madness. and if you lose that? you're nothing." it's that. a sacred madness that every performer finds, cultivates, and embodies. for the 3, 4, 5, 10 minutes of a song, Sam just goes all in. and it's not just wonderful and unique, it's inspiring - it's the embodiment of an ethos. it's that spark Robin talks about, not only kept going but passed on, like a candle to candle thing. so tell him I love him. watching him over the years has like, inspired me and given me "license" to discover, cultivate, and embody my own uniqueness/genius.
Future islands will only appeal to a certain type of person in this de evolving society. I cherish them more than any of my favorite bands from the past as they are simply on another plateau to anything from at least the last 20 years
Best performing singer/poet in years. Samuel Herring doesn't need fancy props or clothes to be engagingly entertaining. I'm truly in love what he does with his voice. Shit and he's doing this very well with tonsillitis! The instrumentals are beautiful too though, don't get me wrong ;). Been a fan since '11 & so happy/proud to see them make it this far ^_^
I was introduced to Future Islands by a friend who lives in London about 3 weeks ago. I have not stopped listening to them since. Absolutely wonderful, underrated and under played. I am 52 years young and love them. Please come to Australia again soon thanks. Oh and make sure you bring Michael Lowry with you.
Back In The Tall Grass 2:14 Sun In The Morning 6:52 Balance 11:23 Before The Bridge 15:46 A Dream Of You And Me 20:38 Doves 24:51 A Song For Our Grandfathers 28:29 Light House 33:25 Seasons (Waiting On You) 38:41 Spirit 44:12 Walking Through That Door 50:01 Long Flight 54:59 Tin Man 1:03:37 Old Friend 1:07:09 Vireo's Eye 1:10:31 Little Dreamer 1:15:21
Future Islands makes me want to rock out, reflect on life, and take a deep breath of fresh air at the same time! Really needed these lyrics at this time in my life. What a wonderful accidental discovery:-)
Lighthouse: From comment on the web. When Herring confided his dark thoughts to his girlfriend, she replied: "You're saying you’re this person, but I know who you are. You’re not that person. You say you have this darkness, but you’re such a beautiful person. You’re the one that helps me feel better and gives me light in my life."
the electronica is perfect. the drums are perfect. the hats are perfect. the bass is perfect. his voice is perfect. i turn 32 this year and i no longer wanna work the assembly line and come home and watch WWII footage, i wanna sing songs.
"That's cool, I didn't mean it." On top of being an amazing singer and performer, the man is a comedic genius. Really like this guy. So glad I met him. Sam!!!! XOXO
I saw these guys live in London last night - thanks NPR for letting me relive the experience today via this great video from DC! Herring is a peerless live performer.
Absolutely, he's inspired me to keep going with making music and perform live. PS here is one of our songs: ruclips.net/video/CQgCjZhW1-M/видео.html :)
the second I first saw his gyrating on Letterman I was very put off and thought he didn't know how to preform. But quickly I'm realizing he is one of the best performers I've seen in a while. So visceral, so in the moment, so active. It brings greater meaning to his songs.
Highly acclaimed in the music biz. Happy they are independent. They kick ass! (granted I know this was posted a year ago, but they have been selling out shows and getting decent covereage for years).
oh man, I wish I had the know how on how to bring these guys to Perth, they're just amazing... this city is so far away from everything it makes it difficult.. I've just had an hour and a half of living in a great mood, thanks NPR for uploading...
Vireo's Eye always reminds me of ANDY IRONS!!! his section in Hi-5 was all time. I miss watching that guy surf!!! It's also the song I blast in my car on the 405 of the way to Kings' games
Remember seeing him live at beach goth for the first time cried my eyes out while it poured rain smoked a blunt by myself in the crowd and literally cried the entire time he is a great performer by far the best I’ve seen
What the hell is with all the comparisons? When I first head Future Islands and then saw a live performance, I thought they were absolutely unique. I have a feeling they would be disappointed to hear that people want to draw all kinds of parallels to other performers.
pcboy626 Pretty stupid statement. I plainly said "When I first head Future Islands and then saw a live performance, I thought they were absolutely unique." So WTF are you talking about?
pcboy626 VNV Nation is not even close to Future Islands other than a knack for interesting melodies. VNV's lyrics are sophomoric and cringe-worthy. While Future Islands can get a little cheesy at times, at least they are not trying too hard to be "deep".
+Raoul Borans yea, but maybe they wouldn't? Perhaps they wouldn't care, at all? There's nothing wrong with drawing comparisons and making connections, that's how some peoples' brains work. I think it's beautiful that you are simply blown away by their truly, truly unique style, and I too have a certain place in my heart where the Future Islands reign supreme, priceless, incomparable. That doesn't mean they can't be compared by people who like to compare things, though ;) who cares, brotha? You? What you know is better... Is brighter
Something fresh that does not sound like 3rd time recycled from the past. Listened to the album for the first time, and it went straight to autorepeat. Grown up in the 80s, I *love* synthie pop. This is like catchy riffs from Bobby O, with sensible lyrics.
That is how you rock out a live performance - with energy and giving 100% of yourself. Dancing and sweating are just indicators of the passion these guys have for the music they are making. Quite frankly one of the greatest live performances ever.
Samuel is one of the greatest singer at this moment, the most intense with Oxbow' Eugene Robison and mister/master David Yow: a real sacred soul-lungs trinity (soul-lungs?... I like it!)
One of the best live concerts I have ever seen, and that is saying something given how many live gigs I have seen! Lively, engaging, hints of electronica, raw vocal talent and oodles of capturing lyrics! Quite simply they should be doing more and more gigs here in the UK! I would see them for sure! Fantastic gig!
my wife and I are seeing them in early June here in Chicago... I'm a little late to the bandwagon 😀 Was blown away by their Sunday performance at Coachella (caught it streaming on YT). Decided then and there that I needed to see them live.
I appreciate all the funny comments below, especially the William Shatner reference...bottomline for me though is that this band is genuine, creative, talented and above all ORIGINAL. Yes, the lead singer dances like old people "do the dirty" but for some reason it works. Too bad he was fighting laryngitis for this performance, NPR should re-record another time. I like these guys!
Future Islands came to play at my school's music festival a few years ago, and I remember telling the bass player that he was rockin and his sound was similar to New Order as my roommate bought an album. In retrospect and all of these comments about comparing them to others, I feel quite bad. The best thing I had to say was that you sound just like this other band? Not exactly what a musician wants to hear. Nonetheless, I channel the good vibes towards this group for all of their wonder. I am so glad they opened with Back in the Tall Grass, definitely my mantra of the last week.
dont fell bad buddy being compared to someone awesome... is really good.. right?! imagine yourself being compared to him maybe he is a new order fan.. we dk
The entire album 'Singles' is utter perfection and I am sure you all will agree
The only song I'm not keen on is "Fall From Grace". Every other song is incredible.
*****
I've gotta say, I agree with you
Yeah, I think "One Day" deserves to be on Singles more than "Fall From Grace".
It's an excellent album, yes...perfect, however, is an empty word that means very little. you're saying there's not one note, not one sound, anything that could possibly, in any sense, be changed, to anyone's taste, anywhere. give that word a rest, for your own sake, please.
***** Haha that's my favorite song from the album.
I didn't fully appreciate them until I saw them live. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. And I happen to like his awkward dancing and chest pounding.
1:05:40 - "Please dont kick him out" in the middle of the song. Nice.
It's not about him being a weird front man, it's about how clear it is that he's so clearly mad and into it.
google the four letters "wyrd"
As someone who has been around him and his friends and family I can say “mad” isn’t the word I would use. Creative, emotive, unique, talented. Sam is pure genius as a front man and an absolute delight as a human.

Thank you Future Islands. You have made the world a better place for 1 hour 19 mins + 29 seconds at least. Glad you've made it. You deserve it !

Thank you. You’re awesome.
Thank you ! ♥

+Eugene F I could never explain it better.
Serendipity.
I can't stop watching this. So glad I saw them. Can't wait to party again with them in the not too distant future!
"...I love that..." -> David Letterman
Me too, i love that.
Poetry from young southern men. Young Marlon Brando looks. The art!!! The passion!!!
Wow, that last song, huge emotions and feelings he show. He is a genius!
I've been watching this video for 4 years! Love them!!!
My professor said "It just takes time" today in class, and I immediately thought of "Balance". Nice way to start the day. And what moves by Sam!
A Dream Of You And Me hits so hard
Skynetz Agreed. Their lyrics are so refreshing in this generation that is bombarded by profanity and lack of originality.
Skynetz best song on the album, which says a lot
Andrew Reece I would probably agree with you, it's a very powerful and poignant closer.
ALL YOUR SONGS ARE HITS
IN MY BOOK. KEEP MAKING
MORE SONGS. THEY ARE GREAT. NEVER GET TIRED OF
YOUR SONGS. LOVE 💘THEM
ALL.
Love when he talks about not cursing. lol..,Respects his elders/parents. Such a decent guy!
The best band of 2015. The best band I have dicovered after stumbling upon Talking Heads as a kid. GREAT!!!
the electronica is perfect. the drums are perfect. the hats are perfect. the bass is perfect. his voice is perfect. i turn 32 this year and i no longer wanna work the assembly line and come home and watch WWII footage, i wanna sing songs.
watch WWII footage, haha, that's awesome.
You should sing songs
I hope you started singing songs
this weirdly resonates in a 38 yr old french man, seven years later
Amen brother
saw them in munich. one of the best concerts ive ever been. including ed shraders music beat it was outstanding
I couldn't get a ticket for this show. So glad it's here.
Wow, Ultimate Future Islands set-list. . . I've got a new go to concert for long listening
I have loved this band for years and getting this...oh my gosh. It's like Christmas in Summer :D
"That's cool, I didn't mean it." On top of being an amazing singer and performer, the man is a comedic genius. Really like this guy. So glad I met him. Sam!!!! XOXO
This music makes me feel better about everything. Isn't that what its all about? I feel bad for anyone that doesn't get it.
This group is unique! I love them and want so much to see them!
That bassist kicks ass.
He's phenomenal and gets little credit. The finger work on Balance is just grand.
+melrodas Agreed!
+Aaron Soderholm he plays with a pick. You mean his pickwork is great
Semantics.
Love Lighthouse bass line- kinda Joy Divisionesque
This performance is EPIC! Sure to be considered as legendary in the future.
I saw these guys live in London last night - thanks NPR for letting me relive the experience today via this great video from DC! Herring is a peerless live performer.
love his dance moves. thank you NPR for streaming.
Best ever live band! I'm an old git, seen the very best since the late 60's, these guys are up there!
Best show ever from this decade!
He has some sweet moves gonna be doing these at the club tonight
There is just something so alluring about Sam and the music is, of course, fabulous!
Absolutely, he's inspired me to keep going with making music and perform live. PS here is one of our songs: ruclips.net/video/CQgCjZhW1-M/видео.html :)
Alluring is a fine description indeed
Love all their music but Vireos Eye will always be my favorite and have a special place in my heart
the second I first saw his gyrating on Letterman I was very put off and thought he didn't know how to preform. But quickly I'm realizing he is one of the best performers I've seen in a while. So visceral, so in the moment, so active. It brings greater meaning to his songs.
Love this band. I'm new to them and have a hunch they're seriously underrated.
Highly acclaimed in the music biz. Happy they are independent. They kick ass! (granted I know this was posted a year ago, but they have been selling out shows and getting decent covereage for years).

There is no other band right now that I want to see more
Amazing band. Seeing them live was special. Tin man💔
Love this guy...gives everything ...best front man ever x
Vireo's Eye always reminds me of ANDY IRONS!!! his section in Hi-5 was all time. I miss watching that guy surf!!! It's also the song I blast in my car on the 405 of the way to Kings' games
Amazing performance!! Perfection!! A genuine music group that expresses pure talent and expression.

What an amazing band. So bummed I missed them at coachella 2014 but thanks for sharing NPR!
Ian Curtis would be proud - especially on Vireos Eye
Holy shit, he's so raw and powerful. Such a rarity now a days to find bands like this.
I love how he said this is the last one and than continues for 4 more songs! Looking forward to see you in Glasgow.
love that kick move at 19:15
really great surfing music. I picked up on them from the late GREAT Andy Irons. i rock out to em before I paddle out, every time .
My Mother was a NC girl from Durham. Spent a lot of time there in the 60's. Love your music. Love where your head is at. Happy for your success.
Remember seeing him live at beach goth for the first time cried my eyes out while it poured rain smoked a blunt by myself in the crowd and literally cried the entire time he is a great performer by far the best I’ve seen
6 years went by so fast. WOW man, it was like yesterday!
Didn’t it tho…
"Der Vergleich ist die Wurzel allen Übels! (Schopenhauer)"
FUTURE ISLANDS are unique and make me happy!
32:50 is some passion you just can't fake. Wow.
Defenitely best FI performance there is. Brilliant. Really hope I can see them soon. Rotterdam 2020?
Covid means nothing when we can access this on demand. Beautiful! Can’t wait to see in person again though!
Please Future Islands, come to 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷!
I'm late to this, I saw Glasto/6music sets listened to the od tune. Loved what I was hearing. This footage = obsessed. Joy
Cool group. Picture the lead singer and Billy Idol singing Rebel Yell!

Future Islands - you rock! I've been to two of your concerts in Paris and one in sweaty mid-summer Berlin. Lovely :) be well.
Finally saw them live last weekend. Hands down one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
This band is just hands down awesome.

Future Islands came to play at my school's music festival a few years ago, and I remember telling the bass player that he was rockin and his sound was similar to New Order as my roommate bought an album. I'm so glad i got to see them at Coachella, they fucking killed it there.
this guy had something to do with the hardcore scene, true frontman skills.
for fucking sure
HangDeath he was actually a rapper before this. I'm serious. Look on here for "Hemlock Ernst", and you'll find some of his old rap performances.
Wow, 2 years ago... please take me back.
Hemlock Ernst had a mean verse on 'Protectors Of The Heat' by Open Mike Eagle
best band in recent years and still relatively unknown every album gets better
The Camera woman with a smile on her face the hole time says enough!!!

Seen them last night in my Greenock town hall👍love this band fantastic night guys.
