  • Layering sounds on the Roland TD30 was/is limited until now. Thanks to a forum member over at www.vdrums.com that mentioned layering on the TD30, I jumped at the chance of making it work for me and have put together some basic videos of how to do this.
I have been using this setup live with no known issues at all.
if you do encounter and problems just unplug the Midi cable.
The Idea of layering for me is to fatten up my already edited kits by adding an extra snare, kick, stacked cymbal etc.... I already do this by using the Roland TM-2.
With this new Idea of internal layering I can just use the MIDI in & out and Perc sets on the TD30.
The videos are just a guide.
    Enjoy.
    Cheers, Simon

Thank you SImon for putting this 4 part series together. It's much appreciated. I purchased a TD-30 for my hybrid drum kit and I use all Roland RT30h, RT30HR and RT30K external triggers and I cannot get the sound that I am looking for, so I will try your layering technique to see if I can get the same punchy sounds that you are getting in your tutorial. Great job! You should work for Roland.

I tried to put together a written step by step for Layering on the TD-30
    Layering Sounds with the TD-30
You need a MIDI cable to plug into the in an out MIDI ports at the back of your TD-30
    1. We need to set up the MIDI with in the TD-30 first of all. Go to the SETUP button, push the F5 once then the F3 button to select the MIDI settings.
    2. Push the F2 button which will bring up the Global MIDI settings. Once in Global, we need to make sure that the MIDI is OFF, Local Control is ON (Drum) and the Device ID is 17.
    3. The TX channel needs to be set to 11. If this is not changed you could get phasing with the instruments.
    4. Choose the drum kit you want to layer
    5. Go to the SETUP button again and push F5 once again. Hit F3 selecting MIDI and make sure the percussion is set to MIDI channel 11.
    6. Push the INST button and select F3 CONTROL and push F5 MIDI. We are going to change the TX channel to 11 on each drum & cymbal that you want to layer.
    7. Push the USB/PTN button and make sure you collect PATTERN and not USB.
    8. Choose an empty PATTERN
    9. Push F2 to select PART then F4 to select MIXER and make sure the volume is set to its highest level (127) then select exit.
    10. Push F3 PERC. Now you have 8 percussion sets to choose from. Select the one you want to edit.
    11. Select EDIT and the voices will appear on the lefts hand of the screen. Hit a drum/pad and you will see it highlight voice. You can scroll through to choose a voice with the DATA WHEEL or even turn that pads voice to off.
    12. On the right hand side, you have VOULUME, PAN, PITCH, DECAY, REVSEND, CHOSEND and POS. Here is where you can edit the sounds to blend with the original layer. Use the F5 button to select Edit this area.
    13. You can use the cursor arrow to also move back and forth through the selections on this screen.
    14. If you select the slider that says PATTERN you can bring the volume up or down to adjust the mix of the layers.

Thanks for the response and enquires in regards to layering a Roland TD30.
Here is a link to the VDrums forum where you can download my SIM BASIC kit 81 and also my TD30 global settings to get you started.
    www.vdrums.com/forum/advanced/tips-tricks/1145243-here-is-how-to-stack-sounds-on-td-modules-with-midi-and-perc-sets/page3
    Othila is my name there.
Ok, I have made a new TD30 project, this has my basic kit on 81(SIM BASIC) along with how I have my TD30 setup. This also includes my trigger settings for my pad and my playing style.
Now please note, that you need to have a user Ptn (blank pattern) 101 selected and in there you need to select (PART) then PERC, then scroll to PERC set 6. When you select edit, Perc set 6 has my layers setup in here. you will notice that I don't have my High Hats layered, this is normal. Also when layering a kit, the cymbal choke function on a layered kit does not work.
Now this is my standard basic kit. Another thing to remember are trigger settings and playing style will determine how this all sounds for you.
My pads also might not line up with your TD30 inputs as I play a 4 piece kit with an extra trigger, BT-1
    "Inputs"
    1. kick (I use a KD7 no rim programed)
    2. Snare ( PD125)
    3. Tom (PDX100)
    6. Floor (PDX100)
    7 & Highhat control, Hats VH13
    8. Crash-1 (CY13R)
    9. Crash-2 (CY13R)
    10,11. Ride (CY13R)
    14. Extra trigger, BT-1
The other inputs I don't use and have no Idea what is on these so please disregard those, or program your own thing.
I'll have to make another video on the edit side of things in the Perc Set. To get a closed hight hat go into the Percussion Set 6, click f5 to get to the edit control functions, scroll down to POS CC. (make sure you have the instrument selected that you want POS CC to affect), now as you increase the POS CC value you will notice the high hat becoming more closed, that's it.
    Cheers, Simon
Please don't ask me how to do all of this, I have made videos and explained this here. My advice is explore and discover how things work for yourself so If a situation arises where things are not working etc... you can quickly fault find with your new found knowledge.
    Enjoy the TD30 and layering.
    Cheers, Simon

Love what you've done, found this you tube through the VDrum Forum. My question is...Will this work on a TD-20X?Thanks

Hi Simon. I have one question about stacking these sounds. How do you assign different percussions sets to kit sets. In other words, can you get the td30 to switch percussion sets simply by switching the kit set once you've reconfigured the sounds you're using to fortify the kit primary sounds. Thanks!

Hey Simon, thanks for the tutorial. I have been working with this on my TD-30 module and had a quick question. Is there any way to link the user patterns with specific kits so when you change your kit, the pattern changes with it? Seems like a simple thing to link, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Thanks!

I'll just asked the same question. Did you get a reply or have to discovered a solution?

@@beauharding2030 I didn't get n answer, but what I ended up doing is programming my kits one by one with all their instruments being assigned different midi notes. So one kit will be assigned midi notes 1- 27 (or how ever many different sounds you want to layer) then assigned the next kit with notes 28-56, then the next with the next 20+ midi notes. Each percussion set can have up to 128 (I believe 0 is an assignable note) notes on it and I think you have 3 or 4 percussion sets that you have control over. So at ~20-25 notes per kit, you have 5-6 kits per percussion set. Times the 3 or 4 percussion sets, thats 15-24 kits with pretty much every sound being layered. To me that is plenty of kits to work with.

Hi Simon, thanks so much for posting this! In the next segment, you begin by saying "Now that we've assigned every pad to ... (midi channel) 11". My question is: wouldn't it be easier / accomplish the same thing by simply assigning Drum Kit and Percussion to the same midi channel (on the midi channel setup screen -- timemark 1:45)? Seems to me that way we wouldn't have to re-assign the individual pads?

Hi Dan, have you tried what you're suggesting? I'll have a look this week and get back to ya.
