You're spot on here. The new civics are almost indistinguishable from other cars; they're basically Accords. The 10th gen Civic lineup was great. I loved the styling - the most Batmobile car I've ever seen.
IMO this design works as a great blank canvas for custom aftermarket parts. It's not too aggressive so you can customize the looks a lot more. If you want it to look as aggressive as the FK8 again, you probably can eventually. But going the other way around (toning the looks down) is harder to do. Honestly, we are lucky that we're still getting a new generation of Type Rs with the EV cloud looming ahead.
I absolutely love the new type r and I feel like Honda really focused on the enthusiasts with it. Full wide body, functional venting and cooling throughout, square 265s. Kind of like the earlier type r’s, toned down style but focused on all of the functional essentials. If you want it more aggressive, they’ll be an aftermarket for that. It’s first car from Honda in years I’m actually excited about.
I concur. I've seen some people complaining about the styling but I think its the best since the ek. All of the beloved 90's sports cars had pretty subdued styling, which I think is a crucial reason why tailoring them to ones specific taste through aftermarket upgrades has always been so fun
I absolutely love listening to people, and all over the internet, talk about how simple and generic this looks etc, when obviously with the exception of the FK2 and FK8, all previous Type Rs were very restrained, and what these same people today would call “plain” and “generic”. I can almost guarantee, without time and the followings that now have been built around these famous Type Rs like the EK and DC2/5, these same people would have called them boring. If you want a Gundam Type R, get an FK8.

You are spot on. Finally someone honest about how boring this car. No more WOW effect, just another car now. FK8 is still the best and most unique style type R their is. Thank you for being Honest!!
Bang on commentary. I wouldn't trade my EM1 for anything built after it. Its a real shame that this is where we have ended up after all these years. Unfortunately Honda's lack of emotion has leaked into their motorcycles for the last decade also. Really hoping they will come to thier senses soon...until then I will continue to hoard my 90's cars and late 00's bikes.
I’m interested to know what you mean? If you mean a 2,500lb 160hp NA B16 2 door Civic, then yeah Honda nor the rest of the automotive world is going back to that.
Honda had to move with the times to match the competition. You can’t dwell on the past. The FK8 had the Fwd record on the Nurburgring when it was released and that’s an achievement. If Honda were producing EP3’s and DC5’s now then they would be a laughing stock. Those cars are great from there eras but would not sell for Honda with todays stiff competition.
Honda lost it's way after 2011 in my honest opinion. They're to worried about competing in the mid size SUV market world wide, that their "fun to drive/engaging" vehicles have been put on the back burner. There is something to be desired about those 80s, 90s, early 2000s "shitboxes" that feel like there trying to kill you by revving to the moon, and you feel every bump and rattle. I feel like they could have taken the previous fk8 and the new TypeR both, and put a more aggressive cam, higher compression, and a more advanced fuel system, and made a 280-300 hp (crank) NA car that revs to 8k+ pretty easily. I mean 300hp at the crank translates to 255-260whp and I think with modern technology that would be pretty obtainable and reliable for Honda.
Maybe I am a rare one but over all I love the look of the 11th Gen Civic over the 10th. Fake vents, overly stylized lines, and etc. I like the Look of the 11th Gen. It looks very European, but it looks like car that has grown up with its audience over the years. Compared to the look of the previous Type R, I would take the 11th gen every time. Now I am an ED/EF person as I own two CRXes and which that we would have received a Type R in that body style. But the first Type R Civic is still my favorite design of all of the Type R Civics.
Agree with every word. The final Civic Type R should have been a celebration of the brand but instead the styling is a testament to the public’s mediocrity. A Type R should be a flagship for Honda and should be styled accordingly.
Honda needs to do a modern version of 90s civics. You know how Dodge did the Charger and Ford Mustangs. I think that would be a great modernized version of the era we all love
FK8 owner here, TBH the new FL5 chassis is most likely for a different audience and nothing wrong with it. Personally I wouldn't give up my 10th gen for the 11th. The 11th just doesn't have that cool factor, you see an FK8 from a mile away you know exactly what it is.
Designed, Tested , Assembled in J A P A N That is all folks. The FL5 is the evolution of the FK8 which was already an amazing machine. The future will have emotionless cars. Enjoy this fellas. Honda ( always conservative) is still making an improved world class Type R. Engineers made this car, not bean counters. Type R stands for RACING! The FL5 will be a Legend on the track. No doubt
Good Vid.... I gotta disagree tho..... I honestly love the FK8 CTR it was bold in your face but it started to get tired because it always lacked creativity on the aftermarket kits , this FL5 CTR is Clean.... nice subtle cues that can be a great platform to go wild..... I search and look at the renderings and I think this car and the market will go crazy. I do respect what you said about making a AWD version would have been dope but we all know the overall philosophy ( except the s2k ) .... the cars motto.... FWD and honestly speaking that is what made me fall in love with all Hondas
YUP I AGREE, THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING AND BEEN VOCALS ABOUT IT IN SOCIAL MEDIA. ITS REALLY TO EACH HIS OWN. IM JUST SO GLAD AND MORE SURE NOW THAN EVER TO KEEP MY 21 BB FK8. THE ORIGINAL AGGRESSIVE DESIGN THAT WORKS AND "DOESNT CARE WHAT WILL OTHER PEOPLE THINK" MENTALITY. THE FK8 IS GOING TO BE A LEGENDARY CAR SOMEDAY, MARK MY WORDS !!!
Ngl at first I wasnt feeling the new ctr at all. And it had me sick because they ruined the new teggy as well. But the ctr def growing on me. I think it will age well
love the ep3 platform , I have a k24a2 with the k20a2 head with a drag cartel 3.2 head package s2k oil pump gram 1000 cc injectors ktuned 72 mm tb rbc intake shaved to match tb kept the 5 speed (boost later) add lsd of course and stage 2 clutch and light flywheel type s front knuckles and axels wit h the bigger breaks a skunk 2 2.75 exhaust with ktuned header ect so much to list lol
Crazy to me how people are upset by the more reserved look of the new type r.......the ogs itr and ctr had other than color....very subtle body changes to denote the type r status.....seems like this new one is a call back to that and less of the boy racer bullshit of the last generation
In many ways I can’t argue with your points, but I’ll say this-as an enthusiast who got his first Honda in 1991 (whose mom’s first Honda was an ‘83 Civic) there isn’t a Civic, post EG, that interested me until this new Type R. Literally, everything after the EG is mundane and boring, including the EK. The previous Type R (FK8?) looks like it was targeted at teenagers. The new Type R looks like it was designed for adults, and I guess that’s why it appeals to me.
ITS SHIT JUST SAY ITS SHIT THE SHIT IS DUMB WE ALL WANT A DOPE 2 DOOR BUT THEY KEEP GIVING US THE SAME CARS WITH SWAPPED FRONT ENDS ITS DUMB THIS CAR SUCKS AND THEY HAVENT MADE A DOPE FUN CAR SINCE THE S2000 THERE I SAID WHAT YALL WANTED THIS TYPE R IS A DISGRACE TO ALL HONDA ENTHUSIASTS!!
Glad to see a honest review we know it will be reliable simple and perform well. And talking to a lot of older guys when the og type r came out say it was simple and nothing special to look at. But for me Hondas have been a great cheap entry level sports car that was still reliable. It seems Toyota seems to know what we want and Nissan is making a good effort. But this for sure is giving me 7th gen vibes
I like the 11th gen TypeR over the previous for sure. The FK8 would've been hot from the factory if they employed Spoon to design the rear end and wing. Which by the way, in terms of design it looks like Honda took some notes from Spoon with the 11th gen if you didn't notice (toned down rear bumper and wing). Also as you mentioned, they improved the cooling and its made in Japan. So yeah I think its better than the FK8 in every way. I still prefer the 90s Hondas though..
My problem with each new generation of Honda is weight. TypeR comes in at an insane 3199 pounds with a US 316hp. Decide 316 into 3199 and you will get your power to weight ratio. My current 95 coupe build should tip the scales at 2100 and produce 550hp with little effort. It's just hard to justify the cost of the new TypeR. I'm probably bias because I can't afford a new TypeR lol😅😅😅
I'm with you, it looks very accord ish, the type r is meant to be aggressive, rigid suspension, seam welded chassis, high revving engine, amazing drivers feel, Honda has lost there way and are only looking at it from a $$$ standpoint. It looks so plain Jane now anybody will buy it. The fk8 had such aggressive styling that it wasn't appealing to "normies."
There’s really no pleasing anyone here. Some will say it’s too generic compared to the FK8, some will say thank God it’s less OTT. Personally, I prefer the FL5 but hey, whatever you prefer is cool.
The words of a true Honda guy...that part when you said the reviewers , the reviewers are killing cars left right and center. toyota is fighting down to the last and kia and the boys ? this is their 90's them fuckers are doing wtf they wanna .... .I have said it once and im o say it again , Honda has never given us a true type r and the after market has proven it . all honda has done is given us parts to keep the ek's and eg's alive just a bit longer , just a lil bit faster .
Cool Jetta. Let me guess no VTEC, mini turbo, 197.889 hp and 111 trq. and 3600 lbs. We don't need more 4 door numb dumb cars. 1998 2.3L VTEC 5 speed Accord here.
Excellent video!!!!🔥🔥 Fl5 is reasonably quite toned down.👎👎 Albeit, it's intriguing that it seems it was designed by a female named Yuki Ishii. (11th gen civic sedan designer)
Yeah the king nose hood make it look like a mini station wagon. The fk8 gundam had better styling IMO. But the Em1,dc2,eg,ef,ek,da is where it’s at though. More sentimental value with the 90s versions.
Very very good points, I didn't actually look at it that way. I was one, that totally appreciated that it was less "fake". But, looking at it again while listening to this. I see how it's almost reserved. Held back from what it absolutely could have been. Crazy to think.
Agree for sure - but I'm not sure an automatic / electric car will ever do it for me at all. The looks are fantastic, but in the end I might ask well catch the bus if the fun factor of a manual is removed.
11th gen civic just looks like an accord now.. and basically the same size. Type r looks ok, but I just can't get behind the factory turbo engines. Im just an all motor golden age honda enthusiast i guess.
People rag on the fake vents, but forget stuff like VW's and BMW's fake engine noises. Fake engine sounds are actually inexcusable. Honestly, the new type R does look too generic, and too large...too much like it could just be an Accord or a Camry. It also doesn't seem to really bring much extra to the table performance-wise. It seems like the attempt at the Integra is an even worse example...too big, too generic, doesn't really bring anything to the performance table that the Civic Si didn't already do well. It shows Honda got too hyper focused on what should maximize sales, which ends up ultimately hurting sales because the enthusiast crowd who is the target audience just doesn't want warmed over watered down versions of what worked in the past. The FK8 was ground breaking, is instantly recognizable, and the edgy styling reflects what a type R trim should be like to drive. Unfortunately, the markups and scarcity factor drive the Type R's out of most Honda enthusiast's budget. Same with the hot offerings from Nissan and Toyota...they are basically all just becoming unobtainable youtuber and press cars. Most everyone else with that kind of money are just going to buy a BMW/Audi/Corvette/etc because they are objectively more bang for the buck in the short term. The Venn diagram intersection of Honda enthusiasts and people with that kind of money just isn't that big to start with, and when the Honda enthusiast reaction to a bland looking lukewarm Type R or Integra package becomes a mixed bag, that sliver of market share gets dangerously small and can easily lead to bean counters getting the wrong signals and axing them altogether. I honestly liked the styling of the 7th gen Civics. I think what basically kills any desire to own one is that there isn't enough extra to it that can make up for the loss of the legendary multi link suspension, and the D17... The D17 is clearly Honda milking every last dime out of the D series platform to get more torque, fuel efficiency, and lower emissions, but in reality what soul it had left was completely drained in the process. They are not durable or buildable with that long of a stroke, and with essentially the basic induction system design of the Y7, they just didn't have a shred of sporty performance soul to them. The Z6 VTEC was a lot of fun, and the Y8 is quite a nice street build head with a bit of the right porting work. I have one on a D15B and it has been a phenomenal little back roads car. The Y8 intake manifold is basically THE go to in stock D series intakes for any kind of D series builds. The D17 was one giant combination of all of the worst things about the 6th generation D16's except magnified, unless all you cared about was fuel economy and cost.
I will always say, the racing pedigree that honda had is gone... with being said, honda/acura is getting mopped across the floor by Nissan and Toyota and I think this Type R is a panic moment and the thought, care and attention to detail took a backseat. But thats what I THINK.
The 11th gen civic doesn't look like a civic, i kept thinking it is an Accord every time I see one on the road. Honda main goal in making the 2023 Type R is mainly for performance so any gimmicky features was put out. The 10th gen civic R design was mainly catering to young racer fan boy who likes body kit with big spoilers kind of look which is a turn off for the reviewers not like they're going to buy it anyway.
Honda really missed an opportunity man. The FKx chassis is the guy at the bar who will start a fight, the FLx chassis is the guy who just wants to go home
The new Type R just looks boring. It's not a car I look at and say "I can't wait to drive it". I just hope the after market scene makes some awesome body kits to make it look more aggressive or something. Make it look more pleasing to the eye and stand out more.
I didn’t think I was going to this new type r since I don’t like the current civic but for some reason those wider fenders are setting it off car looks amazing to me.
These things just scream Audi knockoff. That's why I honestly refuse to buy one. Bought the 10th generation and have no complaints. Reminded me of the nineties on steroids. I still have my EK and my son just picked one up. Personally my favorite but I would settle for an EG lol.
Why don’t Honda look at the aftermarket world. Re create a retro body style. Like bring back the ek. Special edition retro ek return for a limited time. Give the community another ek and see how well it sells.
Love my First gen CR-V nothing like chucking a wagon around with double wishbone suspension it’s sad a pedestrian suv has more soul than the McPherson strutpocalypse cars
This is exactly the same way I felt when I first saw it🤦🏻♂️ It looks like a family sedan with a wing in the back to make it look sporty, and the inside looks like a bmw🤷🏻♂️
I think the civic has lost a lot of character over the years but I like this very much compared to the last type r that looked really over-the-top. I have an 8th gen sedan.
For me the design is almost perfect just a few small details that I would like to change like the badge supposed to be stickers like the previous type r and I suggest they should remove the type r badge in the front because you already have the type r badge in the interior and also the seats should remove the logo at the back and if I have one I would change a recaro red seats pole position then change the rims into modulo or mugen white wheels that is possible to have in the jdm market and a spoon dampers and springs and that’s my taste. The missing part also is they should had the electronic brake change into handbrake
Honestly you have to look at it from a 2023 Auto show room perspective. If they make standalone chassis then it won’t be a civic anymore n honda doesn’t care anymore about Real racing Japanese OG . plus people these days don’t care about what is it or how much power it has or where it came from. As long as it drives good n good on gas. The automotive industry is going onto the Movie Demolition man…..electrical and they all look the same.
I love all the different viewpoints. I understand with the sense of these newer cars and newer technology comes with making the car more stable, comfortable, and capable. Despite the rattles/rawness/“discrepancies”…that’s what gave character. We won’t ever have that again because who wants a new car that’s not comfortable, modern, etc. Bit in the other side, give us something that makes it feel like Honda. Like you said, if Honda had an NA high revving engine…all Honda enthusiasts would get dibs. I’ve always been a Honda/Acura head since I was a kid and it’s sad to see the brand diminish. I can hardly tell an audi/civic/Kia/Hyundai apart sometimes. They all look the same. Lol I do agree the new type r is a bit matured and has its really cool features but I feel like it would be numb. It just has a type r badge…I do like the fk8 and I’m sure it’s a blast to drive but I can’t get past the way it sounds. I will forever love a high reviving NA engine with a nasty crossover. Lol idk I’m back and forth with this new gen. The spoon render of the 11th gen looks real good and Im excited to see the aftermarket side for bumpers/side skirts/etc. Hopefully future Honda/Acura will create something the enthusiast will be ecstatic about. Go back to the roots…
Talking sporty cars First it was the civic that sold great The most newer sports car is the BRZ, frs, they sold like crazy I was surprised but since then even the newer BRZ sold great, because they looked good, but the engine is honestly poorly designed in brz appeal is really want people like to look sleek and defined contoured edge, the civic line started to decrease because I think they were focusing more on building a efficient car rather then appealing, they've always been a engine company at heart, Race car Engeering is just not in their priority because statically it cost them more to build just to satisfy a small fraction of consumers and especially when their is a recession they audit every aspect of their business and make decisions wisely, Ain't no point in trying to build a Ultimate driving machine when the people that want them can't afford it,
Called my local Honda dealership last week. Wanted to order a manual civic. They told me there were so few manuals produced that I was unlikely to get it built to my specs or anytime soon if at all. Bummer
I have to unsubscribe because I lost my EM1 I can't see another civic build because it hurts that my car got into a accident and its gone loved your content
9th gens are getting more expected as ppl are finding out that the k20 head swap is not as hard as once thought. Also, turbo’d 9th gen are beast especially their single port exit
Yeah ! I definitely agree with you about the looks compared to FK8. All of the racy Type R looks is GONE ! It really looks so generic. Even the interior looks so dull and boring. Looks like it came straight from Golf ! But on the other hand they really really improved the infotainment system. It got alot alot better. That's for sure. The performance is improved as well. That's definitely a big plus !
Everything looks the same today. Everything is just a boat and even “sports cars” are huge. There’s no imagination or risk taking happening. The FA5 was the last decent looking car Honda made IMO… I’ll stick with my ek for now.
I like it.. I'm more for the smooth lines... reminds me more of the 90's hondas. The only real gripe I have about it is the spoiler mounting.. It kinda feels like you stuck an OEM wing on an aftermarket mount.

No one was super concerned with how “fast” a 90’s ITR was/is. It is just a blast of a car to drive, just like the GSR, EGs and EKs/EM1s.
Sad we never got a fast version of fit with K series
Bulkhead was too thin and the firewall was not safe with a k series. Same went for the cr-z thats why they never got it.
Always thought of that too. Should of made an SI version of the fit with a k

Honda needs to do a modern version of 90s civics. You know how Dodge did the Charger and Ford Mustangs. I think that would be a great modernized version of the era we all love
My EK4, EK9 and DC2 R will never replace it. Still have my Ek4/EK9
I love my 04 EP3, 04 EM2 and miss Honda's Civic Hatch/Coupe lineup!
The new Type R is...
...boring?
...dull?
...uninspiring?
...uninspired?
Well, all of the above.
Best articulation of this side of the argument.
TypeR gen 11 living Legend ♥️♥️♥️🎌🎌🎌
FK8 owner here, TBH the new FL5 chassis is most likely for a different audience and nothing wrong with it. Personally I wouldn't give up my 10th gen for the 11th. The 11th just doesn't have that cool factor, you see an FK8 from a mile away you know exactly what it is.
If it ain’t a Type R it ain’t a tight car🎶
Maybe not the best ever made but could be one worth buying. But the gr corrola sounds insane
Designed, Tested , Assembled in J A P A N
That is all folks.
💯 With you , have to wait to see how it feels. If it feels numb, no thx. Stick to my oldies 👍🐐
Crazy to me how people are upset by the more reserved look of the new type r.......the ogs itr and ctr had other than color....very subtle body changes to denote the type r status.....seems like this new one is a call back to that and less of the boy racer bullshit of the last generation
Yes
As soon as I noticed that strand of hair, on His left side, just dangling out there i couldnt focus on anything else, lolol
They should called it the integra type R and made a more aggressive looking civic typeR
dude. you hit the nail on the fkn head!!! great ass points been made.
I think they should revamp the ek chassis and make it safer. Make it have better tech and give k series options or even a j series.
Cool Jetta. Let me guess no VTEC, mini turbo, 197.889 hp and 111 trq. and 3600 lbs. We don't need more 4 door numb dumb cars. 1998 2.3L VTEC 5 speed Accord here.
Excellent video!!!!🔥🔥
Fl5 is reasonably quite toned down.👎👎
Albeit, it's intriguing that it seems it was designed by a female named Yuki Ishii.
Ek are better than fk9
Also that Hyundai n vision 74 bringing the fire son. This is what I want a car to look like.
Agree for sure - but I'm not sure an automatic / electric car will ever do it for me at all. The looks are fantastic, but in the end I might ask well catch the bus if the fun factor of a manual is removed.
My first new car was a 7th gen, it's sophisticated looking i liked it!
Hayysss thanks for being honest with this new type r. .
100% agree my friend/Honda brothers. This day in age is a sad one.
You are the firs reviewer that has spoken the truth on this
I agree the Mugen RR and the ek type R are my favorite 💯👍👍👍
The new Type R just looks boring. It's not a car I look at and say "I can't wait to drive it". I just hope the after market scene makes some awesome body kits to make it look more aggressive or something. Make it look more pleasing to the eye and stand out more.
I like my EG hatch.
I had an ep3 it was fun just under powered
I didn’t think I was going to this new type r since I don’t like the current civic but for some reason those wider fenders are setting it off car looks amazing to me.
Great video. Awesome point of view. 👍🏼
Someone tried to give me a stanced 8 Generation sedan for my beefed up Ej8 coupe. I said no way jose!!...
Well at least it's not an Integra. But then again, the new Integra is not an Integra!
Bummer
I like my 2021 but my newest car leading up to it was a 98 accord, I want to sell my car and get a 90s Honda again
I have to unsubscribe because I lost my EM1
I can't see another civic build because it hurts that my car got into a accident and its gone
loved your content
9th gens are getting more expected as ppl are finding out that the k20 head swap is not as hard as once thought. Also, turbo’d 9th gen are beast especially their single port exit
I actually like that mousy looking type r before the fk8. It had sneaky rear doors I barely noticed.
Hmm I know of many EM2s that went well over 300k
Those cat manifolds are unreliable tho
I love my 7th gen civic lol
05 tl
01 prelude
05 rsx
Im set for life fuck these new cars
I think the design focus group had too many yes men...
You ever want to drive a EP3 let me know local to C FL
I like it.. I'm more for the smooth lines... reminds me more of the 90's hondas. The only real gripe I have about it is the spoiler mounting.. It kinda feels like you stuck an OEM wing on an aftermarket mount.
100% the wing looks like an afterthought
Looks easily swappable with an aftermarket one, so it probably wouldn't be a big deal in the long run.
I think the new type r model is watered down compared to the last generation.
Shit this actually the first civic I like past my EM1 and the RSX.
