The whole point of attenuation is that to get a tube amp with no overdrive or master volume on it to distort you have to turn it up too loud- so you do that- but then attenuate it back down to an acceptable volume. So, if you didn't think it was used this way- what did you think it was for?

For that type of music, if it's the power scaling that appeals, the VOX AC15CH (head), has some power scaling. They aren't that common, and a slightly awkward shape, needs a decently wide cab to sit on, like a 2 x 12". And I think the power scaling doesn't work on all impedances. But, Kinks is that VOX AC-30 gritty shards of glass tone. It can do gnarlier than this, and probably can go much louder if you need it for gigging. In the Europe at least, the VOX AC15CH and V212C (Greenback) cab run to about the same money as the Supro. And could buy a decent 1x10" or 1x12" if you need more portability. Just some other options ... I was looking at these Supros but decided on VOX in the end.

@@retroman541 They use run of the mill parts and mount components like tube sockets to the PCBs. Personally, I still think that's good value for a factory-made PCB amp built in the US. Comparable Fender amps are built in Mexico and more expensive, but not any more reliable.
One point is that the circuits in most of Supro's amps are very similar or identical with few exceptions.

I play several genres: Western Swing, Older Country, Rockabilly, Swing, Jazz Standards, Old School Chicago Blues (cleans, as Jimmy Rogers on his own recordings & behind Muddy, Little Walter, and ALL the early Chess stuff, and all the early Chicago guys who emulated him on Chess recordings), and other stuff.
I guess I should actually TRY one, but you have one and are pretty good at evaluating amps, so...

Nice Amp and stuff, but I just had to watch Phil's head. With the camera location and the SG behind him it makes it like Phil has devil horns!

I’m curious how it would do with a clean boost or overdrive. Maybe have the amp at edge of breakup, have guitar volume rolled off for clean, full volume for crunch, then a pedal for an overdrive “second channel”. The one channel thing is the only negative factor for me.

Great demo by Phil showing a wide variety of clean and overdriven tones. Some lovely warm tones coming out of that amp. Many seasoned players believe a high quality amp can make a budget guitar sound great, whereas a poor amp can make a custom shop sound cheap! Just under a year ago I bought a Laney Cub Super 12 15 watt combo. My guitars are mostly mid-range with decent quality pups. Sometimes when I've been playing for an hour or two and it is fully warmed up I find myself thinking 'Where is that tone coming from?' It makes all my guitars sound fantastic! On top of that it has the superb 'Black Country' spring reverb which is pretty much boutique level. Still available here in the UK for around £400 (although I believe you may get hit with import/shipping costs across the pond?!)

Not just import fees- the conversion rate isn't in our favor- 400 pounds equals. $493.49 in US dollars. Then you add the import fees and taxes- we would end up paying close to 600 bucks for it.

Great review and sweet tones. Looking for a small tube amp I could actually play in the house, eyeing Mesa California 1x10 with attenuation but this has more features at a lower price (due to offshoring by Supro's new owner I believe). The one feature I HATE is the control placement. Yeah, I get that it's vintage and a lot of old amps are that way and it's handy for gigging players, yada yada...I don't like back pain and squinting...probably a dealbreaker for me.

Ok this may be an off topic question, but what was the Strat you switched to at the end?! You list the ES and the Danelectro, but not the Fender. Just wondering because it sounded great though that amp!

Supro amps have their own character. Nothing else sounds quite like them. I own a Delta King which is a Class A. Not a lot of headroom (hey, it is a Class A amp, after all) but it is unique. Highly recommend Supro for those who aren’t quite F-style amp folk, especially at the price point.

Hi Phil and anyone who has played this amp. I heard some extra amp his in the Supro demo of the 1x12 despite their using humbuckers. I don’t hear that in yours, although it is the 1x10.
Did you experience any noise while you were not playing, similar to what you heard in the PRS Sonzera? Your comment on the noise in that amp kept me away from it, and it would be good to know if this amp suffers from the same issue. Thanks!
