I remember the end of Raving Rabbidds bothered me so much as a kid. The big rabbidd mech doesn’t explode or anything when you beat it, you’re just teleported away. It’s like if the Death Star didn’t explode at the end of A New Hope, and someone just said “good job, it doesn’t work anymore. “
Rayman 3 for GBA is the game that made me spot a fake friend. The game was lent to me by a friend when I was in school. Some other kid I was befriending back then liked to hang around with me and we usually went to my house to play games. One day I went to shower while he was home, and when I got out I spotted him nervously getting out of my room. He suddenly had to leave so I told him goodbye. A few hours later when I wanted to play Rayman, suddenly the cartridge was nowhere to be seen. My mother was convinced that kid had stolen it from me, but naive as I was back then I though I probably just lost it myself and never confronted that kid. From then on that kid never spoke to me again, which it was a little suspicious. I had to pay for the stolen game to the friend who lent it to me, but besides that I'm happy that fake friend unveiled himself so early. I hope a game was really more valuable for him than a friend.
you know whats funny is that the nonsensical story fo rayman 3 gba would work if you tweaked one thing... make globox the narrator! The game already ends on globox telling this story to his babies, play it off like he's embellishing the story or filling in gaps that he wouldn't know about! With a nod at the end by rayman like "if only he knew what i went trhough" or something along those lines
It seems that only the console version of Rayman 3 understood that the yellow lums are the result of the destruction of the heart of the world, which was restored at the end of Rayman 2. The portable versions at that time were really fascinating, due to the limitations they had to accommodate that, today they would just port the game with a reduction in textures. A remake of Hoodlum Revenge would be really cool. Good video!
The pixel art in Rayman 1 for GBC looks kinda great, specially when taking into account that they had to adapt from assets that not only had a lot more color depth but were also considerably larger in resolution, the fact that they managed to capture the feel so well suggests that at least that project got to start and end with a clear objective instead of having to convert half way through development from 2 to 3 or from 4 to RR like the other ones. I always wondered what motivated Ubisoft to change what clearly was meant to be Rayman 2 into 3 when they could have simply dropped the 2 and kept The Great Escape as a subtitle, they did port that game a lot of times without much hesitation so it's not like a 2D version of it wouldn't sell.
I find Rayman 3 GBA to be an amazing game, maybe even my favorite on the system. It uses a lot of impressive GBA tricks too! It's also true it was originally developed as Rayman 2. Although there's no official confirmation we do have a lot of evidence. For example level names in the prototype and game code are the same as in Rayman 2 and the Digiblast version is internally named Rayman 2. And yeah I think most people agree that R1 GBC is much better than the second one! I believe they were made by different studios too.
As an avid lover of the original Rayman, I really liked 3 on the GBA. I thought it was a great blend of 1 and 2, with some references to 3. It had some annoying parts, but save states in the emulator made short work of them.
I think my favorites are GBC Rayman 1 and GBA Raving Rabbids. GBC Rayman 1 is a legitimately great game with some beautiful artwork and polished gameplay (the sound design disappoints but is serviceable). And while GBA Raving Rabbids is an unpolished rush-job, it's also our best glimpse at the Rayman 4 we could've had - at least until the prototype leaked a few months ago. Music is surprisingly good too.
I always just assumed that Rayman 3 (GBA) took place between 2 and Hoodlum Havoc. Somehow, between the events of Rayman 2 and Hoodlum Havoc, Razorbeard was destroyed or deactivated, as he appears as a lifeless statue in the latter but is clearly shown escaping scot-free in the former. However, at the end of Rayman 3 (GBA), we don't see Razorbeard escaping, leading me to believe that he was likely defeated for good there.
Rayman 3 GBA is great…but men the story makes no sense! It’s like a alternate universe where 2 and 3 combine. Honestly, a 2D Rayman 3 (a portable console version) would be amazing.
I adore the GBA Rayman games, they are truly something unique and special for the franchise and that’s saying a lot given that the franchise is so much different with every release!
Imagine my shock and disappointment when I realized while playing Rayman 3 on my GBA, that it's just more Rayman 2 than 3. That was before I actually got Rayman 3(PC version) for my 9th birthday. I pretty much spent all my saved-up pocket money expecting a toned-down version of Rayman 3, only to find out it's like, a toned down version of Rayman 2 with a few elements from the third game like the hoodlums.
There's something cool about them revisiting Rayman 1's gameplay style for GBC and GBA, even if they aren't the same level of quality and are based on the console games. It's kind of a missed opportunity that they didn't use Rayman 3GBA's engine to make a fully original Rayman game for the system, one with its own vibe and identity unrelated to the most relevant release at the time. Oh well, I guess they didn't see the GBA as a big enough priority for all-new games.
As someone that had the first 2 GBA games, this was a lovely bit of nostalgia to watch. Glad I wasn't the only one who had trouble with Globox in Hoodlum's Revenge.😂
Rayman deserved better, there's been a few crap games over the years but a lot of the mainline entries were awesome the GBA games weren't awful either, hopefully one day Ubisoft will pull their fingers out of their ass and actually acknowledge him again, still one of my favourite platformer series ever made, Rayman Anniversary was the first game bundle I rented for PS2 back in the day too and was also where I played Rayman M.
When the world needed him most, he appeared. I don't want this to be rude. But FrameRater is the tuber I always forget about, but am always stoked when I see an upload!!!!
You know, I remember buying a Rayman anniversary pack for the GBA and it even came with school supplies. There was a duotang or binder and a notepad, maybe a pencil or eraser too? I remember that. It was before a family reunion. Man, it was such a long drive to get there. I believe I used one of the school supplies when I was in Grade 3. Don’t even know if I still have those Rayman school supplies anymore.
Ive been playing a LOT of GBA games on my 3DS via custom Virtual Console ports. I really should add these to the collection, i remember playing at least one of them at some point...
The GBA Rayman games were always phenomenal to me even though I never owned a physical copy of any of them. I had the GBA Rayman 3 on my Wii U but my old Wii U had since stopped working thanks to the mist from the winter storm from a couple of years back and I loved playing GBC version Rayman 1 on my 3DS back in the mid to late 2010s which I thankfully still have.
4:28 this is an emulation bug affecting multiple emulators, even the Wii U VC version has it, but on actual hardware and some more accurate emulators like mGBA you'll find the boundaries make a lot more sense.
I remember I used to have some of the Rayman GBA games growing up, until the day when my original DS was stolen with some DS games and all my GBA games. But after seeing this video, I had them all! Now I'm a man on a hunt to find copies of the games, and I did find some replacements like one of the Scooby-Doo games and DS "Rayman the great escape", but there's still some I'm searching for: Shrek 3rd, and, Rayman Raving Rabbids 1.
Good video. I did get confused between the Rayman 3 GBA games so that clarifies things. Of course From Software made King's Field, Echo Knight trilogy, Otogi 1&2, Lost Kingdoms, Cookie and Cream, Kuon that horror game that's rare, Enchanted Arms a tactics RPG, Armoured Core and many JRPGs for the PS2 or the PSVR game Deracine. Lots more than Demon/Dark Souls/Elden Ring. Many are quite interesting. Even King's Field were like early dark dungeon crawlers or RPGs so I think their Demon Souls/Dark/Elden like games yeah happened on PS1 encase people didn't know.
I like handhelds combining with consoles but with other Gameboy Colours nice minor content but still cool. You missed that Rayman 2 Gameboy Color was on the 3DS shop (I always saw it seeing if the 3DS Rayman 3D was digital or physical and it wasn't in my region and yeah it being a re-release again is kind of eh but at least it was the Dreamcast version on 3DS). I myself forgot the GBA games were on Wii U.
25:13 Fun Fact, Rayman 1 in particular had two releases too. Red like Rayman 2 in EU/PAL, and the green you showed for NTSC. I will say I love R1 and R2 equally on GBC, but I definitely think the first is stronger. Davide Soliani's style was built for the first, and it shows, but I think Ubisoft's UK division did a good job attempting to capture the same energy. Regardless, I find having all three numbered entries on GBA really feels like a competent collection, complete with the two spin-offs. :)
So, here is my personal ranking Number 5: Rayman 2/Rayman 2 forever, cause it doesnt manage to be as good and charming as the first GBC game. Number 4: Rayman 3 Hoodlums Havoc, besides the enemies and the redesigns, the game is not really focus on Hoodlums Havoc but more on the great escape. Number 3: Rayman Hoodlums revenge's, despite having a bad camera and globox being cowardly, this game tries its best to reply Rayman 3 gameplay into gba. Number 2: Rayman 1 (GBC), this is one great port for an handle, with those impressive 3D animation, it may lack of characters.. but still is one of the best GBC game to this day. Number 1: Rayman raving rabbids, that's is what the console version should have been, it not good has the ds version, but way better compare to the other gba games, and it the only one that doesnt use Rayman 2 themes, over, AND OVER AGAIN.. that's why it the best gba Rayman game.
I had rayman : hoodlum revenge on GBA. Back then, I was quite bad at it and never finished it. But I tried again years later, and well, I think it's not the worse isometric 3D there is, I did not die that much, and the game has some diversity, nice graphics, and nice music. I quite liked it. For a comparison, I also had the Spyro season of ice game, and it was clearly bad; The isometric 3D was real confusing, I would die again and again by falling of, and then you would have to restart from scratch the level objectives... I never played the other portable rayman game, so thank for the retrospective :)
It's me or the commentary and the video don't seem to be synced? Like when it talks about the flying power it appears later in the rayman 3 sequel section.
Thankfully I got every Ubisoft game I wanted off the Wii U before thry got delisted - they said that some games would be gone on PC so I kinda guess, to bad they never said it for the Wii U crowd, kinda pissed that Rayman Legends was on sale on it's last day when I got it at full price a week or two before. Also this video kinda makes me second guess my decision on getting the GBA games... kinda, I just hope that the glitch is Fixed in the Wii U port at least. Thanks for the video.
Mad Trax is a lot of fun! You can play it pretty easily nowadays online with a friend using the Dolphin emulator. There's also another similar minigame where you do the same things but it's 2 vs 2
I’m having the same problem with the RUclips app on my LG TV. I’m seeing the video about 10 seconds before the audio describing it, and have never had this issue before
I just checked on my phone and it seems okay there. And I also watched a different RUclips video on my TV and that seemed fine too. An example is at 25:13. On my phone, you start saying “I’ve never had the boxes for these games” at this timestamp, which is correct. On my TV, the boxes also appear at this timestamp, but you say the same line at 25:27 on my TV.
Interesting. Someone pointed out an initial criticism was based on an emulation issue (played on Retron 5). After hearing that I decided to trim it out, which was successful on my end. For a short time this can cause desyncs. I guess the processing speed varies on the device.
Interesting opinions on these GB titles, I don't really want to play these games but I do record cutscenes for videos on the channel so I'd have to play through these to get them.🤔Since you said at the end that your choices for these games are cartridges or emulation, I'd probably say I'm lucky in having complete in boxes of 4 of the 5 Rayman GB games. I did find a Rayman 2 CIB but it's $400+ and that's ridiculous! I didn't spend over $100 for the 4 that I got and the cheapest one I got? Hoodlum's Revenge for $25!🙃
Would you consider taking a look at the Moorhuhn/Crazy Chicken/Chicken Hunter games which are very obscure in North America. The first time I think I heard of them was from one of your videos regarding a similar game to some of these games.
Rayman Raving Rabbits GBA, looks weirdly much like the original PS1 Rayman. The other games, besides the change in perspective tried to convert the silly fairy tale world into a more darker version. I mean this fits the story of the Game, but after i was starting with Rayman 1, this felt like they abandoned what made Rayman 1 so fun to play and just kept the name. I think one mistake they where making is, making the playersprites way too large. This creates the problem, that you can't look ahead and this kills the platforming. When you don't have to tip toe every step forward, you can play way more reckless and this makes the gameplay more fluid.
I discovered hoodlums revenge a few months ago and was sorely disappointed with the awful controls. Gauging Raymans position midair would have been made so much easier by adding his shadow beneath him like they did for the 3d titles. What i found amusing though was Raymans constant state of desperation and mild panic in the dialogues. It made me feel like i'm not alone in that nightmare at least
Unfortunately the GBC Rayman game (I think it was just the 1st one, but I could be wrong) was also available on the eShop, just the 3DS one. And I think they had a DSi game that was based on the original Rayman, too? I never realized how ubiquitous Rayman used to be!
rayman 3 on the gba was one of my very first video games and i loved it so much still do ive since played through it on an emulator i wish they would make another one thats a bit like rayman 2 which is the very best rayman game of all time imo
This trilogy keeps the theme of Rayman being slightly unhinged and demented so they're a success in my eyes. ...also since you're looking at the Rayman GBA games again, I hope this means we can get another look at Nitro Family, too.
Would you say that Rayman 3 gba is a better game boy Rayman 2 than the actual Rayman 2 on game boy color? Also I just realized that yellow lums were everywhere in origins and legends! I wonder how bad of a state the world is in those games considering just how many yellow lums were just scattered around.
I loved these games so much as a kid. I didn’t care about the story I just liked rayman. He looks cool. I got it the same day i got my first gba it was wonderful
Definately prefer Rayman 1 on the GBC - I think trying to adapt Rayman 2 into that formula was far too ambitious, the story and worlds didn't lend themselves as naturally to that limited formula. Always considered Hoodlums' Revenge and Raving Rabbids missed opportunities, Hoodlums' Revenge could have been great with a little more time and work, and Rabbids could have been the redemption of the Rabbid saga had it not been as rushed. I do really like Rayman 3 GBA though, it kinda feels like a combination of all 3 games, and is, in my opinion, the closest to a definitive Rayman handheld experience (well, aside from the ports of the various games that we've had since I suppose!!)
i am not going to say this but Rayman Hoodlums Revenge is non canon to Rayman 3 Hoodlum Havoc but i like that idea of a different ending instead the dark lums into the red lums i wish ubisoft use that in rayman 3 hoodlum havoc for gba instead put rayman 2 in rayman 3 for gba and in the level of Rayman Hoodlums Revenge the land of the living dead with all the lava is a copy rehash of rayman 2 level sanctuary of stone and fire so yeah Rayman Hoodlums Revenge is non canon to console game by using rayman 2 theme in Hoodlums Revenge so if ubisoft is going to make rayman 4 we have to wait for Rayman make his return for Mario Rabbids A Spark Of Hope DLC i hope that ubisoft will not mess things up to rayman this time
@@FrameRater yeah you saying that elucidates the fact that my brain lumps all nintendo handhelds till the switch as gameboys. Thats totally my bad, im 30 now lmao
I always thought Rayman 1 on gbc was extremely well presented and arguably had better-flowing level design than its console counterpart. I was less impressed with 2 as well - that lack of linearity made the levels feel directionless for me, and there isn't as much visual polish? Some levels being drawn flat while others have oblique perspectives threw me off.
wasn't there also a sidescrolling platformer Raving Rabbids on the Nintendo DS? I remember thinking it felt like extremely cheap shovelware in terms of its presentation and aesthetic.

He lost a damn good friend bro. You did the right thing.

I miss when handheld spinoffs of console games were basically new old installments of that series.
Mad Trax is a lot of fun! You can play it pretty easily nowadays online with a friend using the Dolphin emulator. There's also another similar minigame where you do the same things but it's 2 vs 2
Is anyone else having audio issues when watching this video on a streaming device? The audio seems to be largely delayed for me.
I suggest refreshing, but I'm unsure if videos process as quickly on mobile.
I’m having the same problem with the RUclips app on my LG TV. I’m seeing the video about 10 seconds before the audio describing it, and have never had this issue before
Can I get a timestamp to check on my devices?
Haha I remember those. Not a bad idea, but there's a backlog of videos right now. I did do a video on Chicken Shoot at one point though.
@@FrameRater Yes, I enjoyed that video I believe. That's where I think I first heard of this series.
Rayman gba games story are so Bizzare, i like you history of rayman.
Man, I still want to play hoodlum's revenge so bad. Isometric GBA games are another breed
Another thing to note is how the GBC version of OG Rayman was actually on 3DS virtual console. It’s actually the way I play the game!
Did anyone else receive like literally 17 notifications that this video was uploaded?
Last night I accidentally posted it early then privated it. Perhaps that has something to do with it?
I found the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman 3 a bit confused story wise, but quite enjoyable. Especially when you unlock the super fist. 😀
Great recap. Thoughts on the DSiWare port?
I only played it a handful of times before my 3DS got stolen. =(
@@FrameRater Press F to pay respect
@@FrameRater ouch.. sorry man 🙁 (still great videos)
what is going on in this comment section
what happened to the duke nukem mega drive feature?
Gonna post it on the archives sometime next week, it's technically an older video.
I loved Rayman advance and nearly beat it
Does Rayman Hoodlum’ Revenge technically count as Rayman 4?
Unfortunately the GBC Rayman game (I think it was just the 1st one, but I could be wrong) was also available on the eShop, just the 3DS one. And I think they had a DSi game that was based on the original Rayman, too? I never realized how ubiquitous Rayman used to be!
Great video! Just wondering how comes you didn't talk about Rayman advance?
I saved it for another video, available now. I also talked about it a bit in my first Rayman trilogy video.
rayman 3 on the gba was one of my very first video games and i loved it so much
still do
ive since played through it on an emulator
i wish they would make another one thats a bit like rayman 2 which is the very best rayman game of all time imo
This trilogy keeps the theme of Rayman being slightly unhinged and demented so they're a success in my eyes.
...also since you're looking at the Rayman GBA games again, I hope this means we can get another look at Nitro Family, too.
I think I'll edit that one and archive it, but another video isn't likely imo.
@@FrameRater Oh well. At least we're getting an archive upload, that's good enough for me.
You really love Raymen don’t you ❤?
Fun fact rayman 3 also had a Nokia Ngage version which i think is just the gba game again but its a fun mention!
Oh yeah the GBA game is a lot better, it's just nothing special imo.
I loved these games so much as a kid. I didn’t care about the story I just liked rayman. He looks cool. I got it the same day i got my first gba it was wonderful
You should do a video on the Pac-Man World ports to GBA and DS
Sounds interesting!
Rayman rabbids on game boy actually hit hard.
Isn’t their another rabbits game on the gba or am I thinking of the DS
You should play the port to N-Gage... :(
When can we expect to see the next Duke Nukem Forever History video?? You have me on a mean cliffhanger!
Probably at some point
I wonder, what does "teensies" mean? Like, in spanish it's a different word meaning "very small ones", does "teensies" mean that as well?
Man, rayman's canon has been utterly shattered since day 1. Absolutely nothing makes sense even ignoring the side games
I feel like they just took stills with the models they have from both games, also i had this game before the actual rayman 3
Rayman’s lore sounds interesting 🤔
No way I just saw comic sans 😮 20:25
See you in Rayman 4
i am not going to say this but Rayman Hoodlums Revenge is non canon to Rayman 3 Hoodlum Havoc but i like that idea of a different ending instead the dark lums into the red lums i wish ubisoft use that in rayman 3 hoodlum havoc for gba instead put rayman 2 in rayman 3 for gba and in the level of Rayman Hoodlums Revenge the land of the living dead with all the lava is a copy rehash of rayman 2 level sanctuary of stone and fire so yeah Rayman Hoodlums Revenge is non canon to console game by using rayman 2 theme in Hoodlums Revenge so if ubisoft is going to make rayman 4 we have to wait for Rayman make his return for Mario Rabbids A Spark Of Hope DLC i hope that ubisoft will not mess things up to rayman this time
YEAH FRAME RATER

It's not a ting but antitoon
That's fan-(bleep)-tastic
It's quite good and good graphics
So...Hoodlum's Revenge is Rayman 4? Interesting.
I loved hoodlums revenge as a kid, even tho i was too dumb to know how to save the game, lol
I was really expecting ds raymand here. At least the rayman 2 remake in 3ds. That was oddly the first time i played rayman 2.
In a GBA video?
@@FrameRater yeah you saying that elucidates the fact that my brain lumps all nintendo handhelds till the switch as gameboys. Thats totally my bad, im 30 now lmao
Rayman 2 gbc was on the 3ds eshop before it was shut down
heavy metal fist makes rayman purple?? is this some coincidence because raymesis is the same color as this
Super cool
Woooo🥳
I always thought Rayman 1 on gbc was extremely well presented and arguably had better-flowing level design than its console counterpart. I was less impressed with 2 as well - that lack of linearity made the levels feel directionless for me, and there isn't as much visual polish? Some levels being drawn flat while others have oblique perspectives threw me off.
wasn't there also a sidescrolling platformer Raving Rabbids on the Nintendo DS? I remember thinking it felt like extremely cheap shovelware in terms of its presentation and aesthetic.
Yep, and I reviewed it. =D
