  • How Sputnik's aggressive confrontational stage show went from portraying fantasy violence to an orgy of real violence at Reading University. A fan was hospitalised and Ray Mayhew was arrested. Then Martin Degville was taken to hospital after a show at Coventry University where bottles were thrown. How did the line between violence in films such as A Clockwork Orange become blurred once the anarchic club show reached a world wide arena.

The gigs were amazing. The atmosphere was unlike any other at the time. Entering the venue felt like landing on a different world, light years away from the humdrum nonsense of everyday life. I'm glad to have been a part of that world... For a short while, everything was technicolor.

In the 21st Century Degville has managed to destroy any relevance that SSS had. He wobbles about the stage looking like a demented pensioner on crack with a dreadful backing band or tape playing cheap synth versions of Classic tracks. Tony James is on record saying he would never appear onstage next to Degville again and thank God for that. Who would've thought that the original lead singer would be the death of what was a truly original legacy while telling whats left of SSS fans about supposed reunions that will never ever happen because most if not all of the original band cant bare to be in the same room as him .

Too true. I couldn't believe it when I saw what SSS have become.
I've just rediscovered the group again since the the late 80's. When I saw them in the last few years i couldn't believe the transformation in Martin Degville. He looked like another Pete Burns. Cosmetic surgery gone wrong. He had none of the swagger of the. 80's. He moved about the stage looking like he had chronic arthritis and his band a looked like they were from the blue Oyster bar. Even the girls in the group. He fuckin wrecked their legacy. But I suppose being in one of their gigs is better than being down the pub where I live on karakee night 😂😂😂

TBH, Degville is an moron. One of the greatest I've ever seen. In 2013 a Fan of him formed a record company (that is becoming more and more popular nowdays) and he wanted to work with him, released Degville's really good Album EDNA back then (but only for a couple of weeks! why for a couple of Weeks?: you'll see ->) Just because the Label wrote their address in the CD booklet along with their Logo, Martin demanded that they pull the album from the download and streaming services. He argumented with, that he works with professionals blablabla .... It could have been the best that happened to him since the 80's, if we see how well this label is doing a couple of years later, and the guy who runs the label would have NEVER let Degville down and would keep working today withhim. No matter how successful.

I love the first album. They had an excellent producer who they managed to scare off. Then uk tabloids jist kept ripping their asses open. They owed their label for failing to recoup their advance. Second album was terrible. Everything after.. worse. Then Degville starts Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic.. further shitting on what little legacy they had by making a joke of himself in his off brand sputnik band. Now its 2020, and im over here just wishing they had done more great material to listen to. . Wishing they had lasted a bit longer before they burnt out.

@@HorribleHomeVideo I also love that first album. It was futuristic Rock-'n'-Roll. Shame Moroder didn't record the second album. Don't know what they did to scare him off tho but getting Stock Whacker and Wankerman in to produce the second album was a disaster. They were responsible for all that 80's dross. But they were so slow getting that follow up album out that by then acid house and ecstasy was the next big thing. Dance music was the future. Which is what Piratespace was. I think it's a good album only 10 years too late. I don't know what the fuck that Blak Elvis album was recorded on. It sounds like plastic lego music. But songs like Star Wars .Jayne Mansfield and Everybody Loves You were class.
I'm gutted I didn't catch them live in the 80's. I was supposed to see them play Stoke. 'Piratespace' period but it was cancelled. It's time they make a film about the band. Every other band has made one.
Tony James must have a larger recording vault of tapes than Frank Zappa had.

"How long can you go on doing that?' I mean a lot of reporters are not very smart as well as often narcissists, but that's one DUMB reporter with DUMB questions. I love how Tony James flipped the table on her provocarions by basically agreeing with her because it took all of her power away. I hope this talentless hack retired ASAP after this, smh.

They could have been a worldwide hit if handled right. And they needed to kick out Martin and put in someone who could sing as it wasn’t a rap band but the next step in rock and roll.
