- The attempted ‘modernisation’ of Melbourne in the 1950s saw many of the city's most impressive and monumental buildings destroyed, including all but a few of its elegant cinemas and picture palaces. Despite the city's renowned grand hotels, theatre culture, pioneering interest in the moving image, as well as world-class restaurants and cafes - all of which made it a world-class destination for travellers - the impending Olympic Games of 1956 resulted in an overzealous attempt to revamp the city and remove much of its architectural history. Buildings deemed too 'Victorian' soon became a target for Whelan The Wrecker.
Exploring Melbourne's history from the Gold Rush through to the twenty first century through a treasure trove of illustrations, photographs and film, director Gus Berger's THE LOST CITY OF MELBOURNE is a celebration not just of the city's past, but also its enduring relationship with cinema and the moving image itself.

we inherited those buildings from another time not so long ago, such a shame, no respect
They’ve been destroying them all around the world. Make up excuses as to why. And in the past they say oh fire or mudflood or was just temporary for a world fair …and repurpose the rest that’s still blended into society.

If the sexes were turned, imagine the oitrage.
I used to love Melbourne when I was growing up back int he 60s and 70s, but its become a congested, gritty, graffiti filled place with street people, druggies smoking crake pipe in front of the old GPO and narrowed streets.
Loved it, but er... not a lot of diversity back then :D
Good...

I miss those days. Not the non binary gender queers we've got now.
So!
Name me one country where diversity is welcomed.
Don't pick on one place or country without opening your eyes to the basic nature of humans.
