This episode really hurt. The entire power dynamic changed away from Rick and you can see him realize that he’s slowly becoming less important to his family, aside from him realizing what a shit father he is. Really did hurt to watch him like that. Seriously though, I'd say this is the biggest power dynamic change up in the history of the series. Morty and Summer don't hate each other as much and proved to themselves that they can do things without Rick. Both Beths don't care about who is who and they don't care about what Rick has to say about it. Even Jerry showed that he can hold his own without Rick as evident in the scene where he's invisible holding Tammy. Rick realizes all of this and you can see him slowly recognize how much less he's needed.

I dunno why, but this song makes me think of Unity's last words to Rick "You can't change and I have no problem with that but it clearly means, I have a problem with myself. I'm sure there's no perfect version of me I'm sure I'll just unify species after species and never be complete but I know how it goes with us, I lose who I am and become part of you." All the hardest hitting episodes then end up with Rick just sitting alone in his garage being depressed. Damn the feels.
And dont forget where rick almost kill himself with that laser crystal he puts on his head. I bet you every depressed and sad scene always come out on the last minute before the credit rolls
I thought the same thing, it feels like that same moment with Do You Feel It by Chaos Chaos yet this time it means so much more and Rick has lost something so vital to him, especially after S3 E1 where we see Beth is all Rick has left to love and live for..
My brother died a long time before Rick and Morty existed, and I've lived longer than he was alive. This song makes me think of him, the future that he could have had, how life could have turned out. I wish I had the chance to talk with him again
hunter knop in the end rick isn’t too different from Jerry other than intellect. They both used potty. After all unity felt bad for rick if you think about it. He’s an alcoholic because he runs from his problems because he’s to weak or afraid to face them. In the end they both are pathetic in their own rights.
@danielstavroff1535 I would argue it's also just one of those things of growing old. Looking back at regrets. I mean, you can't change them, only live with them.
THIS SEASON FINALE, WAS BEAUTIFUL! Perhaps we’ll build upon ricks past and his failures as a person if the theory that Evil Morty, is in fact a morty that he abandoned because he saw too much of himself in that morty. So rick not only failed as a father to Beth, but created a mistake with a morty that has become more smart and dangerous than most ricks. So he’s failed as both a father, and a Rick. (This song is amazing as well)
It makes the most sense, especially with what we saw him do with Beth. He has no qualms with leaving his family in one dimension just as long as he can have it in another. Next season could address him abandoning evil Morty and dealing with that consequence in a big way.
Wait but didn't he abandoned his original Summer, Jerry, and Beth in the croninburg episode when the Rick and Morty from that demention were killed and then burried in the back yard?
This all is Rick's hell. knowing that he can always redo and restart. i think for rick no matter how smart he is about everything theres one thing he keep failing is that being a part of something long enough through high and low. always using theres " infinite " timeline to restart to try again yet to fail again. we really dont know how many time he has done this just to jump into another universe to restart. i think all of this is Hell for rick
@@giannhsmarampidhs well let’s just say if you enjoy the deep and emotional moments of Rick and morty you’ll love Bojack. It’s also really funny at times.
This is the saddest season finale, not because of some death, or someone going away, it’s the fact that the family have stopped caring about Ricks adventures, and, as a result, him. He is truly alone, what he initially thought he always wanted, but is now aware of the reality of the loneliness that comes with being by yourself

In the morty's memories episode the red color memories were the ones where Rick screwed up and in the season 4 finale the memory of Rick cloning his daughter was red 😔
Some of the best music comes from shows like this. Commercials always drop gems as well. This song hits me in an unusual way where I'm moved to tears everytime I hear it and know not why.
This entire season was just Rick, the smartest and most dangerous man in the galaxy, getting his ass kicked in and beaten to a pulp. Turns out, it was just Rick beating himself up for being such a horrible father and horrible person in general. It's actually really sad.
He tried making it up in this season, but his efforts only revealed to those he was trying to seek redemption from how manipulative he really is. He did his job though. Rick made them realize that they didn't need him. He just thought it wouldn't hurt so bad: "if I let it go can I shake this feeling?" Rick gave in to his emotional side knowing the inevitability of his own natural demise thus sacrificing his own feelings to give the confidence every father should give to their children yet he never gave until he came back into his family's life. This is a redemption story.
Episode 1: Keeps on dying over and over again Episode 2: Gets somebody killed and now he rigged his own toilet so he's sad whenever he uses it Episode 3: Builds a robot that will have dire consequences Episode 4: "Steals" a dragon and now has to save it (because he stole it) Episode 6: Got his ass kicked by story lord (the story train rick) Episode 7: Looked into a wet egg and is now regretting it Episode 9: Loses to a god in a fist fight and only survived because of his high grandkids Episode 10: Almost dies but but survives due to the person he constantly makes fun of
Even the smartest man in the universe is a slave to his own mind. His ego, narcissism and lack of empathy keeps him alive but it also keeps him from having real, healthy personal relationships, he is also very self-aware of this problem but it's the only thing he can't fix because of his personality/ego and so he drinks to numb the pain, sure he could just leave to another universe but the cycle will just start again, he really tries his best and still he fails, sad.
"Yeah grandpa Rick, don't drag us into your bullshit just because you're losing control." No one talks about that line... but it's probably the most hurtful one. Specially when his family is turning on him :(
@Tzuede Off the Cuff She DIDNT want that at all, did you watch the episode? She said to him, I want YOU to choose, do you want me to stay or to go? And when Rick couldnt decide, HE choose to have both Beths, HE wanted to have the cake and eat it too. Thats why even him agree that he is a terrible father. Beth never stated she wanted both lifes, Rick was the one who choose that. Go re-watch the episode.

His sad moments are one of the best moments of the series. It's like, we're seeing a God who can literally do anything that he wants but still can't accept that his just human. That despite being able to do everything, he can't fix himself. That's the only think he can't do.
Loved this song, perfect for the ending. We all knew this would happen eventually to Rick. Beautiful song by Kotomi and Ryan Elder the composer of the series.
I think when we looked at Beth’s unhealthy obsession with pleasing Rick, we always looked at it from the point of view of Jerry or Morty, but we never got to see exactly how Rick felt about it, and even though it was definitely unhealthy for Beth and definitely something she should be leaving behind, maybe Rick sort of relied on that unhealthy obsession, thinking that no matter what he did, his daughter would also take him back, and now without it, he is truly feeling how much his family doesn’t need him.
Rick wouldn't care, that's not even his original beth. Rick dosnt care about anyone but himself, sure he feels guilt for about 5 seconds until he drinks it away. Rick smart enough to know that emotional attachments are worthless.
lking1540 Yeah he’s smart enough to know that it holds him back and views it as a toxic trait, but he can’t help it. He does care. He may temporarily forget about it after drinking away but deep down- he still cares about the people around him, even jerry.
@Tzuede Off the Cuff calm mate, honestly. You know that Rick himself said that he is a terrible father. He runs from every problem that he mostly avoided and not trying to fixed it. And heck even the creator said so that he is a terrible father.
Itll be interesting to see how the family dynamic works now, isnt it crazy that ricks shitty decisions fucked him in the end? What goes around, comes around.
They seriously wrapped up every storyline other than evil Morty in one episode and the hit us with a depressing ending which is the only finale ending where rick isn’t yelling at morty in the garage. Man I feel empty after that one. Edit: I realized I mixed up the opening episodes with the finales so that’s my bad, you get the point though.
Season 2's finale was also a bummer (Rick in Prison). The difference is we knew on some level that a prison break was inevitable. But this? The best Rick can hope for is to mindblow watching the mindblow.
This captures the mood of the end of the episode. Rick started out as this brooding, alcoholic genius that seemed to be the keeper of the universe. Over time those around started to see through his facade. They started to realize they don't *have* to put up with him and his antics. Rick has always put himself before the ones he "loved", right when he started to feel like maybe he can open up, the ones he actually started to love no longer need him. That's why he doesn't like to form bonds. It's why he doesn't hang onto sentimental or materialistic things. It's why he doesn't look back.
Rick and Morty is an AWESOME show!!! Quick, intelligent, irreverent with excellent detailed artwork and animation. And then they wrap up this season with a hauntingly beautiful song. Just great stuff. I want more.
for such a ridiculous show, they really know how and when to hit you hard where it counts. I never cried watching a Simpsons episode, but Rick & Morty's gotten me several times

*Rick and Morty is my favorite TV show. Not just for it’s hilarious twists and subliminal foreshadowing, but for the deep introspective looks at many things that trouble us all as human beings. This song, along with Chaos Chaos ~ “Do you feel it?”, and Mazzy Star ~ “Look on down from the bridge” provide the audience with some of the saddest and most gut wrenching scenes in any show I’ve ever watched personally.*
So surreal going back and listening to the songs I used to play on repeat when I was a depressed alcoholic drinking my life away lol. I'm now 4 years sober. Still a bit depressed, but nowhere near as bad as I was. I also quit vaping, and it's crazy how much better I feel physically from where I was. I have a therapist and case worker, a decent job, and I'm gonna try going back to school for journalism. Things are looking up for the first time in a long time. If you're struggling, get help. It takes some work, but it's out there.
Gosh. Can we just appreciate the art? It's so creative and perfect, and it's even split here and there in the middle. The Beth on the right looks so naïve and happy.. not yet ruined by rick's touch.
Jesus, this song is amazing, Not only do I deeply relate to the lyrics but the scene in which this song plays was unlike anything I’ve seen in a while, watching Rick sitting there defeated, while his family goes on without him was crushing. You can only imagine what’s going through the head of the smartest man in the universe at that moment.
Since hearing this song I have been diligently learning it on guitar none stop. It's a real tear jerker to sing, but lovely when it works. Funny to add it my list, by far the most 80's sounding song I play and it's not even from that century or millennium :) Thank the Universe for music, Rick and Morty and of course Kotomi & Ryan Elder
This song besides what was happening made me remember when i started watching the show back in 2015, it hit hard when i remembered how much my life has changed since, people i lost, bad decisions, but that’s life and that’s the magic in this type of melancholic episode endings.
I just went through a terrible breakup. My first son is involved and she seemed to move on instantly while I'm still hurting. I wanted to watch Rick and Morty to cheer myself up, but this episode crushed me with this song.

First time I heard this song I had been awake for 2 weeks from 23 of substance abuse. I thought about all the people that didn't get the chance to recover. I thought about why I had the opportunity among all the friends I lost. I'm now rounding 140 days clean.
It's sad that his daugther didn't realize how much his father love her. His father cloned her so she could both stay and go away to do what she want. The painful part is that this song is too perfect for that scene.
My uncle died two weeks ago. It was so sudden, it is still a shock to all of us. I have been feeling so anxious, because he always gave me a sense of stability and security. I just cannot fathom that he is just gone like that. And that I won't be able to meet him again. I hate it, I have been feeling miserable because I should be even more thankful for life but I just feel completely and utterly shitty and anxious.
I took shrooms at the beach on a rooftop with my bestfriend and some others while looking at the stars. This is the first memory I have of the trip. This song came on and I felt an absolutely incredible feeling of calmness and relaxation. It lasted a long time in my head. For that whole moment I felt at peace with myself and the world. There was not a single bad feeling in my entire body. I was seeing patterns in the sky and the overwhelming message I received was that everything was gonna be okay. Such a beautiful memory I have...
@@tacticalmattfoley Also probably feeling guilty after watching his mindblower. He just cost the trust his daughter had in him with the stupid decision to mix the versions of Beth up and send God knows which out to space and keep the other. @@ass2278 Technically, they're both his daughter, since they have the same memories and personality. And since there's no way of telling which is which, it makes even less difference. There's no fake or real Beth, there's only two different Beths.
I have never watched Rick and Morty in my life, but I overheard this song while my boyfriend was watching it and immediately downloaded it. So, so moving even without the context of the show. Reading all the comments below makes me want to start the show now.
Anderson Floyd - For me, it sounds like someone having to live with certain decisions that were made. A matter of moving forward, not moving on, if that makes sense. There can be unintended consequences to everything we do, and as much as we try to shake them, they can reverberate through all aspects of our life. Those consequences will shape the way we move forward for as long as we have the privilege of making mistakes and learning from them.
this really was a human moment, and i love they're actually sprinklin in heart throbbing moments like this. it gets the viewing consumer attached to the characters and want more of the story. which builds loyal fan bases. i just hope they aren't done pumpin out new content right now in lm even MORE invested in this damn show then i ever was now.
My mom passed away last January 20 and she kinda reminds me of Beth. Ironically, her name is beth as well. She had liver cancer for 5 years yet she lied about telling me she was already getting better. When her cancer started appearing last 2016, she had to move to the US as an immigrant in order to get better and cheaper treatment... so I had not seen her since then up until her death. Honestly, I miss her so much and this song has been on loop since her death. My life hasn't been the same and I have to finish my finals so I haven't had a proper day dedicated for my mourning. Yeah... To whoever is reading this right now, spend time with your family and loved ones. Time flies by too fast.
The reason this ending is so emotional and complex is because it really lifts the curtain on Rick and Beth. Throughout infinite universes, Rick has a wide spectrum of similar traits and faults. This is shown through the citadel of ricks. It also shows this to be true even for Morty, Beth, and even Jerry. However they all seem to tie to the same universe in which the citadel of ricks resides. Its clear from episode one the Rick we follow along with came to that universe by a statement from Beth, as Rick "flew back into their lives". Its also clear that Rick did so by jumping ship to another universe, similar to the universe in episode one after the cronenberg incident when he tells this universe's Morty that its the best thing to do after screwing it all up. So he drags the new Morty with him to the current universe where him and Morty die in a freak accident. Something that can only occur "a few times" as Rick explained. The other interesting thing is that the Beth in that previous universe actually preferred Rick and Morty to be gone. In this new universe, Beth is very clingy and clearly has emotional issues for Rick to remain in her life. As we experience more in this universe following along with Rick, we see time and again that even though things are rough, he just can't seem to come to abandoning it, or the Morty from cronenberg world even though Morty and Summer start to resent him as they learn more about Rick. Eventually this resentment extends even to Jerry, and finally Beth. We also learn in episodes leading up to this season 4 ending that what Rick believes is "toxic" is his drinking, Self Superiority Personality, and his care for his family, as seen in the detox episode in season 3. Ultimately meaning that while he pretends to not care about anyone or anything, he actually does and finds that to be his greatest weakness, but masks it with drinking, his adventuring, and other means. This brings us to this moment, where over the course of the series we learn that this Beth questions everything, including her father. A person in his life that, according to him, means everything, mainly because he cares for this particular Beth who cares for him back with unconditional love. The ending of season 4 shows that despite these facts, this Beth cannot decide for herself if she really wants to be with her dad after getting to know him better or not. So instead of making the decision herself, she places it upon Rick, who is clearly scared to make such a decision since he will lose the one person, out of all the universes he could have chosen, who unconditionally loves him even though she's unhappy. Instead of making the decision though, he decides to clone her and have a computer randomly decide what the real Beth and the clone Beth will do, and does so without even bothering to know which is which because it will pain him to make the decision for her to stay, or to go from his life entirely. A pain that he hides in the moment through drinking and not watching the machine, and goes even further by removing it from him mind. This all tells us why he realizes how shitty of a father he really is....he couldn't make a decision because he wants Beth to be happy, but selfishly wants her in his life to love him unconditionally, even though the Beth who thinks she is a clone starts to follow the same line of thinking the Beth that actually left and ends up resenting Rick after learning that he ultimately couldn't make such a decision himself. In short, he realizes he is a terrible father for several things....he couldn't be a good father to encourage the original Beth to be free despite her obvious unhappiness, couldn't make the Beth that stayed behind happy, and didn't even bother to care enough to know which Beth he freed, and which he asked to stay.
I don't completely agree. I think you forgot the episode were Rick did erase a lot of his memories with morty also. He may have very well erased where his actual real beth is . It's not even wise to assume from the first episode that the universe he is in was his original. He may have destroyed that universe and that's where evil morty actually came from and Rick is non the wiser. The probability that his mind is complete after so many drugs, experiments and dimensions plus augmentation may very well have changed things literally at an infinite level.
Rick and Morty is funny af but whenever it's deep and sad like this, it never fails to actually put me on the verge of tears. This song is probably my new favorite from the whole series next to Evil Morty's theme and Goodbye Moonmen.

"You can't change and I have no problem with that but it clearly means, I have a problem with myself. I'm sure there's no perfect version of me I'm sure I'll just unify species after species and never be complete but I know how it goes with us, I lose who I am and become part of you."

You can be with him again. This is a Christian song. Give it all to Jesus, he gave all for us
It's heartwarming and heartbreaking to see Rick dragged down into being human...
He always was to the audience but yeah I agree seeing him confront his own humanity and realize that he’s a coward is heartbreaking.
hunter knop in the end rick isn’t too different from Jerry other than intellect. They both used potty. After all unity felt bad for rick if you think about it. He’s an alcoholic because he runs from his problems because he’s to weak or afraid to face them. In the end they both are pathetic in their own rights.
“you should give respect to all the dummies out there, now that you’re one of us” or whatever Jerry said
This comment is SPOT ON. That "drag" back to being human is ever so subtle. No surprise it's done by his own actions towards his only child.
I think Rick hates seeing those around him turn into him
Wait but didn't he abandoned his original Summer, Jerry, and Beth in the croninburg episode when the Rick and Morty from that demention were killed and then burried in the back yard?
@@VoiceNerd i don't think so. It will be more episodic rather than building a storyline.

Family guy sucks
This is the saddest season finale, not because of some death, or someone going away, it’s the fact that the family have stopped caring about Ricks adventures, and, as a result, him. He is truly alone, what he initially thought he always wanted, but is now aware of the reality of the loneliness that comes with being by yourself

This entire season was just Rick, the smartest and most dangerous man in the galaxy, getting his ass kicked in and beaten to a pulp. Turns out, it was just Rick beating himself up for being such a horrible father and horrible person in general. It's actually really sad.
Ikr this season he felt so weak showing us his insecurities like when he flinched when space Beth faked him
Ricks lost his invulnerable god statis and hasn't learned that yet and has been getting his ass kicked cause he doesn't think he can get hurt
Episode 1: Keeps on dying over and over again
Episode 2: Gets somebody killed and now he rigged his own toilet so he's sad whenever he uses it
Episode 3: Builds a robot that will have dire consequences
Episode 4: "Steals" a dragon and now has to save it (because he stole it)
Episode 6: Got his ass kicked by story lord (the story train rick)
Episode 7: Looked into a wet egg and is now regretting it
Episode 9: Loses to a god in a fist fight and only survived because of his high grandkids
Episode 10: Almost dies but but survives due to the person he constantly makes fun of
@@earthquakewilliam7380 Episode 8: backed a stupid idea all the way
Even the smartest man in the universe is a slave to his own mind.

His sad moments are one of the best moments of the series. It's like, we're seeing a God who can literally do anything that he wants but still can't accept that his just human. That despite being able to do everything, he can't fix himself. That's the only think he can't do.

I loved telling Rick and Morty stories to my mom. Wherever you are, I miss you so much
Loved this song, perfect for the ending. We all knew this would happen eventually to Rick. Beautiful song by Kotomi and Ryan Elder the composer of the series.
I think when we looked at Beth’s unhealthy obsession with pleasing Rick, we always looked at it from the point of view of Jerry or Morty, but we never got to see exactly how Rick felt about it, and even though it was definitely unhealthy for Beth and definitely something she should be leaving behind, maybe Rick sort of relied on that unhealthy obsession, thinking that no matter what he did, his daughter would also take him back, and now without it, he is truly feeling how much his family doesn’t need him.
dats deep
Rick wouldn't care, that's not even his original beth. Rick dosnt care about anyone but himself, sure he feels guilt for about 5 seconds until he drinks it away. Rick smart enough to know that emotional attachments are worthless.
lking1540 Yeah he’s smart enough to know that it holds him back and views it as a toxic trait, but he can’t help it. He does care. He may temporarily forget about it after drinking away but deep down- he still cares about the people around him, even jerry.

@@charlessmith1896 what do you think will happen?
@@nicholassimons6716 it's been renewed for a total of 7 seasons
This captures the mood of the end of the episode. Rick started out as this brooding, alcoholic genius that seemed to be the keeper of the universe. Over time those around started to see through his facade. They started to realize they don't *have* to put up with him and his antics. Rick has always put himself before the ones he "loved", right when he started to feel like maybe he can open up, the ones he actually started to love no longer need him. That's why he doesn't like to form bonds. It's why he doesn't hang onto sentimental or materialistic things.
It's why he doesn't look back.

@@tacticalmattfoley Also probably feeling guilty after watching his mindblower. He just cost the trust his daughter had in him with the stupid decision to mix the versions of Beth up and send God knows which out to space and keep the other. Because he also could've just sent his actual daughter out to space. And he didn't even know which was which.
I am actually curious. Being someone who can review the song from a pure standpoint, what does the lyrics mean to you?
Anderson Floyd - For me, it sounds like someone having to live with certain decisions that were made. A matter of moving forward, not moving on, if that makes sense. There can be unintended consequences to everything we do, and as much as we try to shake them, they can reverberate through all aspects of our life. Those consequences will shape the way we move forward for as long as we have the privilege of making mistakes and learning from them.

The song I didn't know I needed till I decided to look up the rick and morty soundtrack.... so good
Straight to my feels playlist
this really was a human moment, and i love they're actually sprinklin in heart throbbing moments like this. it gets the viewing consumer attached to the characters and want more of the story. which builds loyal fan bases. i just hope they aren't done pumpin out new content right now in lm even MORE invested in this damn show then i ever was now.
I want more of this music.
Seriously. They need to make an album like this.
"I am a terrible father.
But at least I'm a good friend"
sad thing is that after 5x8, he's not even that anymore
@@gav7692 I mean he brought his friend back from the dead. I'd say that's being a pretty good friend
Can’t believe this song was made just for the episode, so good, I definitely see it getting popular and used in movies
Name one movie that used this

Dick joke.
Are you Dr. Wong?
somebody seems tohave jerry's job. jk great analysis tho

Rick n Morty is like that one friend who is so irreverent, but one day suddenly gets really serious and the jokes are replaced with tears.
This song has me in my feels not just how it ended but with everything going on in life right now. Thank you! Needed a good cry 💚
