Tip from a self defense class I took: don't "wolverine claw" your keys, you are actually more likely to be injured that way than you are to do and damage to an attacker. If your assailant gets a hold of your fist all they have to do is squeeze and your hand is in pain and you've probably lost your keys. Plus it didn't give you any leverage, and leverage is key if you find yourself pitted against someone with a height/weight/muscle advantage.
Instead: hold a single key in your hand like you would to unlock your door. If accosted, jab the key toward vulnerable areas (eyes, throat, etc.) and kick at the knees. Try to incapacitate and get away fast.
Bonus: since you're already holding your keys the normal way they're ready to unlock your door and you don't need to fumble for the right key.

i didn’t know this, thanks! similar thing for knives - it’s a bad plan to carry a knife for self defense unless you specifically have training in using knives for self defense bc it can also be easily used against you. really, using any kind of item for self defense, make sure you know how to use it (though intuitive stuff like pepper spray doesn’t exactly require lessons)

So you never listened to their stories... Seems unfair. But that is the gender dynamic we are used to. Statistically the men have always had it harder, but they do not tell anyone, IF they had a shit time, as that still want that ..."SEX"! And no one wants that guy crying in the corner. I've listened to both gender's stories. The men's are always far worse and end worse. The statistics back that shit up. SNL does not care about men in problems. Neither do you. And to fantasize that women just all have it harder, is just purely stupid and narcissist. i guess - welcome to impoverished man's hell. Which will allways be wrose.

I remember hearing a guy speak that was a personal security expert. He talked about the potential threats to personal safety, and how it was different for men and women. He once decided to do a survey, and asked a lot of people about the last time they felt in fear for their lives. Men, unless they were emergency responders, often had to think back to their experiences in the military. Women, on the other hand, often could cite much more recent examples. "Last night, when I worked late, and had to walk through a dark parking garage to get to my car." "Last week, I looked out the window, and thought I saw a guy looking up from the corner outside. He looked just like the one that asked me for a date and couldn't accept No for an answer." I can't remember the rest of the examples, but the point was pretty well made that women live with the potential threat of violence on a regular basis.

I was assaulted by my landlord in my own home. He came over to check out the ceiling that was completely wrecked, and mold in the cupboards. He started yelling and gaslighting me. I kicked him out of the apartment and told him to never come back or I would call the police. I live by myself, so for months I was scared that he would come back or that I would get kicked out of my apartment. There is a really gnarly power dynamic at play here, but to add to that he is a man and I am a woman. Only thinking about “should I go to the police?” gives me headaches. I have been walking this earth for long enough to know that there is no justice here. Even if I were to go to the police, what would the best possible outcome be? I would probably lose my home.
He hasn’t come by ever since and the company that my landlord is a part of generally leaves me alone, but the fact that this is “normal” (it’s not), and it still scares me, and that it scares me to stick up for myself and kick him out for assaulting and disrespecting me, makes me really sad. What if he does decide to rape me/attack me/etc.? What then?

We can't even be bothered to take Rape Allegations from MULTIPLE WOMEN as being a serious enough issue to block a man from becoming President.
So yeah...if anything it's gotten worse in many ways.
HOWEVER....I WILL say that there IS a growing understanding among more guys about Consent. That there IS more Anti-Rape stuff.
UNFORTUNATELY, the ones in Power & Influence are STILL Pro-Rape, which is the real problem. Can't make progress when you have people in Power saying "We CANNOT Police Masks....but we can Police Girls Clothing!"
So my hope is in the Younger Generations.
I mean even a decade at this Anime Convention I went to, I could tell people were able to understand and take rape seriously. With the Popularization of "Cosplay is Not Consent" Signs, as a Primary Example.
But it will take DECADES before us younger generations are able to gather in large enough numbers with enough power to BEGIN to make a difference.

Don't carry your keys like that. They're not secure in that position and the moment your fist connects they'll slide around and slice up your hand, distracting you because of the pain, and putting you in danger of catching any bloodborne diseases the creep might have. Plus holding a keychain in your hand like that can actually cause you to break your hand when the punch connects.

Haha! This is so funny! Reminds me of the time I parked three blocks away walking to meet my boyfriend, and got chased by a van full of guys who shouted out they were gonna rape me, so I ran into the front yard of a random apartment complex shouting “Dad! Get the gun!” and hid behind a hedge to make it look like I went inside. And they drove off yelling “We know where you live! We’ll be back.” Lol! I didn’t live there! But I hid for about fifteen minutes, then ran back to my car and drove home to decompress, and irritated the guy who was dating me by being almost an hour late. Oh, memories. I didn’t mention it because I was embarrassed. The experience made me feel like a goof for letting my guard down. Those were the fun times. Ain’t it a blast being young!

I know, right? Society tries to make you feel afraid of growing old, when actually if you do your homework (work body, mind and character to get better and not worse), life gets better and easier the older you are. Apparently, once you hit your 40s, your chances of being raped are reduced to less than the chances of a 15 year old boy being raped (predators go for the young). So the moment I hit 40, I decided to go out at nigh as if I were a boy. With a pepper spray, you know, because boys get violently attacked too. But at least the odds are with you after 40. So it's cool to grow older. You just have to make sure you keep doing strength exercise and eating healthily after your 30s, so as to avoid losing muscle mass, and you must continue learning so as to avoid losing mental acuity.

A man can't overpower you if you beat his ass first ;) but yeah, i used to feel alright, but now I get strangers approach me in public to ask me out or try to pay for my purchases, and I just don't like that they literally don't know me, and have to be basing it off looks alone. I guess in a way it's flattering, but I'd rather be appreciated for, ya know, myself (plus I have a boyfriend). But seeing that, I do get worried that some guy will overreact or something when I decline, plus you hear so many stories of sex trafficking and things like that, that is still a major problem that people are shedding light on, but not really fixing. I don't like people or crowds anyway, and I am a bit prone to anxiety, but I hear about so much and there's so little people are doing, ESPECIALLY on college campuses (mine, at least). Theres a whole Instagram account for students who have experienced harassment to anonymously speak, and too many of those stories mention how the dean was super unsupportive, like "well why didn't you fight back?" or how the assailant got their family involved, and they applied pressure to yhe school with lawyers so they can just walk away with a slap on yhe wrist. Sometimes the victim changes schools because so little was done, but the other person gets to stay. I honestly believe if you want fewer politicians/people with power who sexually harassed or assaulted women in the past, their schools (where a lot of it happens) should ACTUALLY punish them and even report them to legal authorities so they have a record and their futures might get messed up and they can't gain power. Don't commit crimes if you don't want the consequences. But anyyyywayyy, at the very best, it's annoying as hell trying to work outside and some asshole drives past multiple times and yells every time, or just having people honk or yell things like hey baby while you're out there sweating and doing physical labor. Like I'm gross and hot, leave me alone in my own damn yard. At the very worst, it's a serious problem that very little is being done to help. I used to not really believe it was so common, and theeeeeen I started college and it's impossible to not know someone who has had a problem, and they aren't all happening at frat parties either. And theeeeen my younger sister was physically assaulted by her ex because she broke up with him. She is about 5'11", but he was 6'5" at LEAST and massive. She wasn't hurt physically besides some bruises, but guys need to get it out their minds that they can just overpower or control a girl. I had to end a friendship because he argued that my widowed mom is incapable of taking care of my sisters and I, because that's a "man's job" and women have their own jobs and can only do those. I've always hated being thought of as weak, so yeah, my goal is to be able to take down at least an average man, possibly end his life, should I ever find myself in a bad situation. There are plenty of great guys and most of my friends actually are guys, but you're scum if you think you personally have the right to control another person, physically or mentally. Men OR women, because some women are just as nasty about control. It is sad to think so many women have people close to them who have been sexually harassed or assaulted. Of course we carry those stories around anytime we go out late, or are alone, and it really doesn't feel like an overreaction to carry a knife or pepper spray at all times.
I'm sorry my comment is so long, but after what my "friend" said about my mom and what happened to my sister, among other things, I am seriously upset. On the bright side, all this anger is motivating me to get in shape :)

I was being groped and molested and followed by the guy in the cafeteria, he was practically raping me at the table grabbing my boobs and trying to slide his hand in between my legs. This was happening in FULL VIEW of the staff table having lunch, with the teachers and principals even occasionally glancing our way. I stormed over and told them to do their jobs and do something about it. They rolled their eyes like I was being dramatic and told me not to bother them while they were eating. The boy started to follow me when I went to sit somewhere else. So I started attacking him and landed a few punches on his other two friends who were laughing. Only THEN did the teachers get their fat asses out of their seats and come to restrain ME.

I kept telling him to leave me alone and I left my phone in my car which I didn't want to go to so he could see what my car looked like. Luckily my great Dane mix wasn't friendly and tried to bite him when he got too close and I acted crazy psycho enough that he said it didn't want to deal with that so yeah from my experience it works.

You're more interested in selling us a brainless documentary that was endorsed by the former Knights of the KKK leader David Duke & produced by convicted rapist Cernovich who said date rape doesn't exist. Danielle. That's a really good point. They direct their anger at the issue toward who they perceive to be the easier enemy to defeat: women. The same way the bad men they're defending are more likely to victimize women because they're weaker and it's more socially acceptable.

    • @bobdonda

The whole core of the argument is literally semantics. If the English language had different words for "certain men" and "all men" none of this would happen.
Women talk about men (some men) harrassing them and how they're sick of not feeling safe around men (some men). Then guys are like "how dare you act like men (all men) are exactly the same and are all dangerous to be around". All these long drawn out arguments just because it's unclear whether someone is accusing ALL men or just certain assholes.
Men aren't offended by other men being called sexual predators. They're offended because they think they're having that label attached to them (and who wouldn't be pissed off at that). It's no different than when women get pissed if a guy talks about women (some women) having trouble making up their minds about things and a woman thinks he's bashing all women.

Thats a very interesting point. But there is a big sentiment that this sort of behavior applies to all men. With things like teach boys not to rape and other nonsense. Really at the end of the day people need to stop idolizing celebrities so much. It makes them untouchable to a certain extent. And when people think there will be no consequences for their actions they are more inclined to do it.

For serious. When I was in jr. high there was a serial rapist prowling my town and assaulting women of all ages in a white van. We had to suspend gym class to take self defense. One of the things that they told us to do was to never stop if you're approached by a stranger driving a van. I was walking my 2 dogs the other day, and a guy pulled up in a white van to ask me a question, and even in broad daylight, protected by 90 pounds of muscle and teeth that would do anything to keep me safe, I was still a little bit hesitant to answer the guy's question.

@James Miller I'm more speaking casually, as in, I hate the societal group, culture, and effects of men. Few individual men would I describe my feelings about as hatred (though I do hate more men than women). I'm more referencing misogyny, but the actual comment was something along the lines of "why do you hate men" so I was mostly throwing back that at that person, though I fully detest mysogny and a lot of aspects and side effects of men-specifc culture and the effects. I hate that. Kinda like saying you hate Mexican food because it makes you sick, but not saying you hate Mexican people, to simplify it down. I'm very tired right now so if that's not incredibly clear or super well explained, apologies. I feel indifference towards most men, and have grown up with more male friends than female my entire life. But I've always had to deal with more racism, sexism, and homophobia from those friends than my female ones, not that that reflects on all men, but from a young age, men have had me tired of their bullshit, simply put. Again, literally a child so I can't say how verifiable or reasonable that actually is, but men have always given me grievances that aren't necessary or morally defend-able, partially because of toxic masculinity and the culture around raising boys vs girls, etc, etc, so I'm not particularly endeared towards men, whereas I'm much more sympathetic to women, but still willing to "destroy a bitch", so to speak. There's a lot on both sides, to be honest, and I'm not going to allow someone's sex from causing me to go soft handed on them. I've actually had that happen with men, which I won't explain because it was not a pleasant experience, but I do try to not allow sex of a person to alter my sense of judgement of them and their actions, or try and find an actual reason for why one's sex may change my perception. Like, higher rates of tramua, abuse, mannerism, pretences, etc.
As a psychology student, freudian slips are actually not super verifiable because the depend on a un-measurable subconscious, so I wouldn't ask people on the internet about that. I'm not fully interpreting your comment right now because I'm half awake, but that's alreadly highly unlikely to exists.
Oh, and I'm agender. I don't have a gender expression, essentially, though because of my physical appearance I am treated as one sex. I've never really considered myself either, sorry.

@@Shadows-RC I think you're just reading too much into that mess. If you want to think of everyone as drops on the ocean, that's fine, but that doesn't make it so. Your argument is just begging the question there.
I have no issue with my sex, I just don't really experience gender, which is a social construct. Like not having a favorite food or being unable to taste things that are sour, I wouldn't describe myself as man or woman, simply just a person. The things that make me me are not inherently related to gender and I don't attribute them to that and so I basically don't expirence gender. My sex is biological and completely logical in my mind, and does have an effect on me and my perception of the world, so it doesn't bother me and I accept my sex. I don't feel the need or want to change it, and the fact you equate me not being cis to that just shows you don't understand what I'm talking about from the get go. Also, you sound sarcastic and bit transphobic so I'm not even gonna acknowledge it as part of your argument past that.
I think you're self projecting to say I don't see men as humans and have no empathy. I said "see the misogynists in the comments" and people went "Men! Why do you hate men?!" and I immediately went "So you think all men are misogynistic? All I said was misogynists, not men itself." and for someone reason explained my gender to further the conversation. I didn't call for men to be executed, I didn't call for men to be second class citizens, I said I hated the patriarchal system that has resulted in what we have today, including this song and a multitude of other issues. If you're somehow implying that men need to be better/in control/not have their unjust social status and systems challenged to be human, you're just misogynistic yourself. You're not some mystical Oracle come to lecture me about enslaving men through comments on RUclips, just say what you want and go. Be plain about it so I can just call you what you are and go. It's not that hard.
