I really enjoyed your candid, honest, human explanation of why you do what you do with what you have. It's too easy to try to mimic others by trying to get more gear (because they have) and forget that you can create with minimal set ups and come up with epic and enjoyable and unique expressions of yourself musically. Thanks again! 😉👍
Incredible timing! I'm putting the finishing touches on my portable loop station! iPad, loopy pro, LPX, SMC-Mixer (the LPX completely changed my playing across the board. I'm in awe) Between hardware and Loopy template setup, it's JUUUUUST about there... HOWEVER I've started rehearsal and practice as of last week! Threw down 10 or so practice songs and things are FLOWING out Most recent vid on my chan has a quick example (End game: jazz/funk loop, tear apart and remix/resample and lay down boombap on Motown and disco trap sets) Will definitely be posting more in the near future! Youve been EXTREMELY helpful and inspirational in my journey Hope to do ya proud! 😁❤️
Amen! This is *SO* central to the electronic music process ... **EVERY electronic musician would benefit from really ABSORBING this process and philosophy **. The hours (DAYS) spent in front of my rig hookup and signal path diagrams for the 14 rigs I've developed for different situations (over 4 years) have been SO helpful ... as I was doing them, I saw so many improvements, simplifications, and possibilities even before I plugged anything together. Set up a rig in April and took the summer to compose a set for a show in October ... leaving LOTS of time for composition and practice, practice, practice. Maybe one possible addition: Have a Failsafe. Maybe one or two hardware units with direct audio to the output system. In my case (a Push3S and Sylphyo windsynth), there is a one-button switch on my output mixer that reverts to a wire coming out of my backup windsynth (always on and ready to go) together with a Roland Aira synth to provide a usable background. But the core message is what really important here ... Enjoy the Journey!
IMO, the computer is the most powerful thing there is, with a good controller that allows you to get to things you can do everything. After buying expensive equipment of all colors and technologies, I end up using an Apple MacBookPro M3 with ableton, with Native Instruments midi keyboard, launchpad and APC 40 for ableton live, I'm really very happy with everything I can do live, this Saturday I'll do my 82nd concert in 2024, it seems that people are attracted to what I do only with this equipment and concerts keep coming. I don't follow any advice from anyone, but the video was entertaining. 😅👍
What a great coincidence man, Ive been introducing myself in the live looping world as a rapper and this is what I needed. “There is no perfect setup” is a great quote 🙌🏾
Super inspirational! I’ve been thinking a lot about ways to get going in live performance with my pile of gear. I think you’ve now lit a fire to get me moving and thinking about it in a new way. Cheers!
Love this. Definitely helpful for me as I'm setting up more live sets and especially love the part about practicing as im learning thats the most obvious key to getting better.
Great video! I confess I don't follow everything you do, but this type of thing is exactly what I'm interested in! Years ago I had a thought about why not just create a guitar pedalboard but for synth gear? ...for portability & have everything connected how I want /need for multiple uses. You have done exactly that. Like you said-you will never be fully satisfied & will always be looking for ways to improve your setup. Plus with this set up, you aren't just staring at a DAW the whole time, which is awesome!
exactly! It’s like I can focus on playing the “instrument” instead of the screen. Closer to making electronic music be more like traditional music making
Good stuff. Somewhere along the way I went from switching gear every composition to sticking with a group of gear for several songs. For me I’ve found that I learn my gear better and build a better group of songs.
Hey taetro, how do you get hang of those pads in minilab. I have to hit those pads hard to get them to respond. I get hang of them if I am messing around with them of whole day or so. I tried to make drum beats with them pads after a week of not using them. Thats when I realized how hard those pads are. Lots of hits on those pads were not registering. And my fingers hurt trying to make those pads work.
They’re definitely not ideal for finger drumming. In this particular setup I use them just to trigger some vocal samples and they’re sufficient for that!
Brand new to the channel and to the artform. It's a lot like starting a new life, and for that reason, I think your take on this pursuit was really useful. My first midi controller is on its way to my home, and in trying to learn more about it, I've already discovered a dozen other pieces I am already interested in. I can see how easy it is to get buried in the gear and lose sight of the goal, when the goal should be the creative process rather than the tools that enable it. Message received, and channel subbed. Thanks man, I'll be back!
It is totally like beginning another lifelong journey. Definitely always keep the main goal of the music and creative flow in your main sights. Hope you enjoy the rest of the content here on the channel!
Interesting thoughts that somewhat crossed my mind already. But for me, it’s slightly different. Because I don’t have access to a infinite number of gear, I always end up selling what I buy and eventually stick up with Ableton and the iOS music system. I have a hard time processing limitations (just now have bought a volca drum but will return it) without thinking with my iPad or Ableton I could do much more. I did enjoy some limitations that came with the octatrack and eventually exporting to Ableton but still ended up selling it. The bottom of the question is still similar where I have a hard time committing to a workflow and should just be happy to explore what I have in hands more, rehearse for hours, days and months until I reach a level of consistency I like and then commit to it performing live. With so many toys and distractions, it’s hard to stay focus so one must really try hard and keep it focused and consistent. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Went DAWless a decade ago. Found and built my perfect setup about 2 years ago. Gave up “jamming” about a year ago to focus on DAWless covers because some genres are too complicated/fast to jam live.
Hi Taetro! Great Video I love how you explain everything in a very approachable way. I´ve been meaning to ask you, lately I´ve been trying to get my live performance ready, but my Macbook keeps glitching the audio from ableton. I´ve tried everything, from freezing tracks to turning off midi instruments during my performance when I´m done using them so the CPU % remains low. The average % I get is 40%. My laptop is a Macbook Pro 2017, I don´t know if the problem is that it gets too hot. What would you recommend? Getting a more recent Macbook? and if so, which one? (I´m on a budget). Thank you!
I think it definitely could be a heating issue. I had a 2018 MacBook before I upgraded to an M1 - but the 2018 MacBook deteriorated significantly overtime. If you can update even to a newer generation M1 air - I think you’ll see significant improvements that will last a lot longer.
Do you have any tips on reducing the hiss of the wireless Aiaiai headphones? I'd love so much for them to work for me. But the two units I tested really had noticable amount of hiss, which always bugged the crap out of me when I was doing a more quiet section
@@Taetro How much hiss do you still get with that tip applied? Imagine playing some mellow piano chords without much velocity. When I can hear the hiss then, I get irretated and annoyed 😔
not necessarily clunky but this setup has each piece of gear performing a specific job rather than a single piece of gear trying to do a bunch of different jobs
How do you use multiple usb audios at once? I thought this was the biggest disadvantage of all; that you only can select one "device" for input in your DAW of choice.
how about wireless audio? not bluetooth neccessarily. i know theres a set of wireless speakers, cant remember the name something beepboop for 800$ (which is pricey)… id like to run wireless audio from my mpc live 2 wirelessly. are there any solutions? ideally, transmitter should be battery powered, since mpe live 2 has battery so no cables from or to gear, lol. any ideas? thanks.
@@Taetro haihaihaihai, yup. those are the ones. pricey. but i guess only available solution, right? no receivers and transmitters that are not bluetooth? darn it. i thought there must be something along the lines wireless mic transmitters and such, like battery powered transmitter you jack into a piece of gear (you get a few hours of runtime) and receiver you jam into the speakers (as far as im concerned receiver can be wired since all i care is audio being transmitted wirelessly and transmitter being battery powered, of course)… 800$ is too steep for my taste, ATM. shucks. bluetooth it is, i guess. lol. thanks!
Respect for all you do, but this makes no sense to me. Why would you have all this external gear together with Ableton? Why would you want to complicate things with hardware while Ableton can do it internally with way more flexibility and ease? Just get a Push3 and call it a day.

still looking for a drumpad that works for me, but the minilab MK2 has been with me for years and just works

You really want to push the output of the device you’re listening on instead of cranking up the headphones themselves
@@Taetro How much hiss do you still get with that tip applied? Imagine playing some mellow piano chords without much velocity. When I can hear the hiss then, I get irretated and annoyed 😔
I feel I've finally reached peak synth set up. Now I'm buying pedals.
This is the way
@@Taetro it's a slippery slope.
Is the Push 3 SA clunky for this setup?
not necessarily clunky but this setup has each piece of gear performing a specific job rather than a single piece of gear trying to do a bunch of different jobs
hey Taetro, Im on a budget and can't really spend 2k on a synthesizer, any other budget friendly options??
The s1 is a nice little synth. On the other hand, your daw has lots of great virtual instruments
This is a very practical video. Thank you.

I have a push 3. there’s more than one way to do things and the nuances between them all is what makes life worth living. Have a good day ✌🏻
He’s done a few videos on Push 3 based setups and they’re great but I think giant hybrid setups like this are so fun, best of both worlds
Based on real life experience, a push 3 or 2 on its own won’t provide enough interaction, especially with beats one creates on the fly. Sending ❤
No questing here. If you're doing youtube vids on gear, fair enough, it's an income for some people. If not, then it's materialism not music making
I have a push 3 but external hardware is just more fun
