1. silicon free and voluminizing products 2. rough dry just little brushing 3. you may have too healthy hair 4. pretexture your hair with a texture iron 5. Cool your curls for 30 min with clips
flcmings I used to have extremely healthy hair and it wouldn’t curl because I’m asian and I take care of my hair a lot and I never used heat but then I started to let my hair get used to receiving heat and now it curls alright
I have been a hairstylist since 1976. I did not know it took 30 minutes for the bonds to form a curl. Also your new products and texture iron are brilliant. I love your teaching videos and have learned many new techniques during COVID . Yes you can teach an old hairdresser new tricks. Wish I knew these techniques years ago when I was doing 10 blow drys a day! Thank You!!!!
I just had an "aha!" moment! About letting the curls cool for 30 minutes before manipulating your hair, I can relate. Whenever I use my hot rollers and just leave them on after they've cooled for 30 minutes or more, my curls stay longer than when I remove the hot curlers just minutes after they are no longer hot. Very excellent tip. Thanks VERY much!
After you curl the hair, catch the curl before letting it drop. Hold it for 5 seconds or so, then roll it up and clip it. Do your whole head let your hair sit in the clips for a while (maybe do your makeup while you wait). Then take them out. Dont brush or pull them apart w your hands. Lots of hairspray, wait till fully dry. Use a tail comb or super wide tooth pick to take apart the sections. Or even just use your finger tips to rub your scalp so the sections come loose. Use hot hot temperature on your hot tool. Consider buying a professional tool, which will make a huge difference.
OMG, no wonder my curls fall flat within an hour! Thank you for posting this video, it was Soooo helpful! Not only do I have fine, soft hair, it's very Healthy AND a quick review of my products revealed that they have silicone in them, plus I used a 2in1 leave-in conditioner. lesson learned! *Grateful*
Please do a video on curling for gray hair. As you must know there is almost nothing for this huge and growing demographic where women are embracing their gray hair. But they need help with styling in a way that doesn't yellow the hair. Thank you.
yes... exactly what @StylistKS said! If yellowing is happening, your curling iron is way too hot! We suggest starting at very low temperatures and then increasing if necessary.
Thank you StylistKS and Andrew Carruthers - I'm well aware of what causes yellowing and how to get rid of it, but I'm looking for any other tips other than not using too hot a tool, passing quicker and not over hairspray or oil. Do you have any?
Thanks Bychance37 - I'm very familiar with them as well and use that approach to. Just looking for more but I guess I'll remain the pioneer in this department. :)
Typically hair that is all one length is a little more difficult to curl being that it's all one length as opposed to layered hair which gives more lift because of the graduation of length to help separate and give more body to the hair. Also if hair is poker straight and fine that type of hair doesn't hold curl easily because there isn't any body or thickness to the hair for a curl to hold. I would suggest if you want lasting curls to do it the old fashioned way and either use pin curls, or rollers, and use a setting lotion or curl enhancing/thickening mousse, those two methods will give you a much nicer curl that lasts for days. A curling iron is more to touch up curls. :)
A TEXTURE IRON!! I think this is what Southeast Asians like myself need! I have super straight heavy hair that I just can't curl. Gotta prep, dry shampoo, curl, set, spray oh lord the effort.. And it still unravels through the night unless you want crispy hair.
Great point!!! I haven't personally found many products that really hold up in super extreme humidity to be honest... many claim that they do but my wife has very curly frizzy texture and it's the one thing we have always struggled to find. If you have any suggestions that have worked for you, we'd love to hear!
I stuck to makeup work for many years but have only recently tried to include hair in my work, so I'm still pretty new to it. We usually "highly recommend" updos to bridal clients who are doing outdoor weddings haha, and explain the scenario to them. I think that's also why classic asian bridal hairdos tend to be so GLUED on and rock hard. I'm finding mousse is a must for me at the moment, but it's far from ideal - still researching! Side note: When Victoria Beckham had her fashion week in Singapore and her hairstylist posted "I GIVE UP ON THIS HUMIDITY!" posts hahahahahhaha. I felt their pain - dry weather ppl have it easy! =D
I just subscribed - you are a remarkable young man to be thinking about your life at your age. I wish many of the kids your age in the UK were as mature as you! Your mum must be proud to have such a steady lad.
The REAL reason! your hair is to healthy! Yes! I love the honesty in this video. It's annoying when people are just like just use this product.. or this.. to make your curls.
I mean....i don't feel bad for you lol treasure your healthy hair. trust me, once it gets damaged it's never the same. (*i hope you know i'm jk, my hair doesn't hold curls well either so i know how annoying it can be. still, im super jealous of how you described your hair!)
Your comment remind me of my childhood memory. I have the same hair like you : shiny, healthy, silky, soft, jet black, thick. My sister bought a set of curler/hair roller (heatless) to curl her bangs. One day we both tried it at the same time. Her hair worked just fine but mine? Just meh... I looked at her and asked "how did you do that? Why mine doesn't work?" Nothing happenend to my bangs. Of course I was disappointed but after 30 years of my life, I'm really grateful for having this type of hair. I live in a tropical country plus wearing hijab and I've never had any hair problem. Not even dandruff.
@@hananani3518 i had nearly the same thing happen to me, so like i have very thing straight indian hair which doesnt even have waves in it except 1 random annoying baby hair. so like my cousin sister bought a curling rod and i asked her to try it out on me (cause i loved the thought of having curls in my hair). so she took a small section and used the iron but when she removed it my hair looked exactly the same except like a few strands that just became squiggly. so we tried again waiting longer but the same thing happened. (on a side note she also burnt my forehead while doing this lol)
@@threambakarajesh9914 You burnt your forehead?! I hope it didn't leave any scar. I usually tie my hair into a bun before wearing my hijab. Even after 8hour+ wearing that bun in my hijab during my working hour, still no curls happen. Not even loose curl. I also wanted to try having a loose curl at least since it look very pretty but I know it's not going to work on me, so why spending a lot of money on the iron curler?
Superb sir, thank you sir i have a silky smooth fine textured ultra straight natural hair. It's the so called "healthy hair", but it makes curling impossible, even salon styled hair dont last for more than 2hr
I could never have curls for a day. A few hours at the most and that is with a hairspray. My hair is straight an soft. Last time I went for a hair cut, the hairdresser was very surprised how my hair looked. Especially, when I told her I washed my hair prior with a shampoo, no conditioner, let it dry, did not brush it out because I forgot my brush at home...She barely had to brush them out before hair cut. She did complement them a lot. A lot. I was like wow, ok. Did not think that much of my hair but thanks a lot. She chopped of about 12 cm. Made my day. :)
This was very helpful. I struggle because I want my hair to be soft to the touch and nicely moisturizer but then it’s “too soft”. I’ll dry try some of these tricks though. Thank you!!
I blow dry out my fine super curly hair, leave it for three days in a pulled back ponytail, then on the fourth day I use a straightening iron to curl it beachy wave style. This works well, and the curls hold, also only curl small pieces, not big pieces as the smaller ones heat thru and curl better. I let it all cool and just lightly finger out the curls. I also use a very sheer hair oil to keep the hair smooth and shiny. As the days go by the curls slowly drop and you get a nice shiny wave. It’s taken me ages to perfect this technique but it works.
Thanks so much. I perm my hair because without the perm it is always 'too healthy' and the curling iron will not even curl it. I also learned that I'm styling too smooth when blow drying. Very educational! Great videos...and much appreciated.
Omg thank you! I was.doing a bridal trial and she said the curls dropped. But she has really soft hair. So healthy. Ni mattet.how much hairspray i put in it! So this really helps me i will try the texturing tongs. X
Use a heat protectant spray with hold that is also humidity resistant, I use kenra 19 and it's a lifesaver for straightening and curling. My hair is already wavy/curly but when I brush it out to curl it nicely it never stayed either without product. If all else fails do a wet set with rollers using mousse or gel, wet to dry styling will always hold 10x better because you are altering the hydrogen bonds. Hairspray is a finishing touch and isn't going to hold a style alone, especially in humidity, unless you use an entire can for helmet head lol. (Never ever use heat on top of hairspray unless you want fried hair, the can says flammable for a reason)
Okay folks, I’m going to use the correct brush (paddle) Use the two Redkin products Skip the conditioner Rinse in cool water Use no softening products Cool the curl & clip ‘em And (Don’t think my hair is too healthy, hah). If this produces an all day curl I’ll let you know! I’m on this! Signed, fine, thin hair If this doesn’t work - I’ll take a nap cuz this took awhile! 8/31/18
I’ve not ever had this issue till recently, soooo frustrating but now i know why!!!!!! The leave ins and other product i started using for smooth, silicone ( i had a feeling!!!)etc. Yay thanku. 👌🏼😘💫
I pre treat my hair the night before shampooing so i don't use conditioner after I wash my hair. I get more texture and volume that way but avoid damage when I use heat in styling because of the pre treatment.
I have a genuine question: we always talk about using products for our purpose, but we use so much product. Isn't that damaging to your hair over time? I rarely use product, because I don't own that many, but even the ones I do own, I feel like it would damage my hair. So, do all these hair products damage hair?
It definitely depends on quality! The super cheap stuff on grocery store shelves can definitely be extremely drying to the hair which could cause damage over time. That's why we always stress the proper product for the hair type and for the desired result. I can very honestly say, I've seen the difference in hair when people invest in awesome professional products versus budget products. Hope that helps!
good product is the key. You definitely don't always need products for nice hair, don't let people talk you into things for no reason. EVERYONE has unique hair so everyone has a different routine and a different product that works for them. I get a lot of stuff from Lush. They let you try out pretty much everything and they generally have well experienced staff who are knowledgeable. You pay for good quality (not just for you but for the ingredients, no animal testing and great product backgrounds as well haha)
Thank you! I had the exact same question. It would be very helpful to have tutorials on how to apply different products. When my stylist fixes my hair nothing is too sticky or crunchy. I use the same products & still end up with frizzy hair
darn I have super thick hair and thick strands. Every time I curl they don’t stay .. i let each curl cool in my hand for about 30 seconds but the rest of my already curled hair just falls when i’m done. I didn’t know that it could take up to 30 minutes for the follicles to fully rebond. I’ll go buy some alligator clips and try to clip up my curls for longer. Thank you so much!!
Usually we will begin with a blow dry to gently stretch out the curl... not too much tension like I said. Then, if you still need to polish the hair as you curl it, pull it tight to the iron as you curl which will finish smoothing it out.
I have find my texture iron! Love the tips and they really pushed those products lol. Yes you have to have the right product. If you brush curl the hair. Curls will last longer and cool air on the curl does helps and pin curls still work wonders
lol!! no wonder my hair isnt curling anymore. I went to the salon for the first time in more then 10 years, long story short I didnt like to condition my hair very often and she could tell xD so i bought what she used on my hair and did everything she did same hairspray but its just not curling anymore. I think the shampoo and conditioner really did make my hair healthy and now it wont curl for the life of me. Everything he said makes so much sense, thanks!
awesome!! I have super fine long hair an I had to learn to figure out what works for my hair to hold a curl and I learn something new the pre-texturizing tool is awesome!!
Ok, I bought the texturizing iron, both hair products, and used the paddle brush. I also let the curls cool for thirty minutes. I did everything you stated in the video and my curls fell out within a half hour! I don’t understand. I do have fine hair but it’s not super fine. I will try again and see if the same thing occurs. If it does I will feel very jipped on spending so much money on the necessities and will return them all if I even can.
I love you...you are so amazing you are without a doubt the hair do guru you are the One...lol. i go to you to my hair how to or never ever do this or never do that ...i learn so much and my hair thanks you sweetest most xpert hair master!!!
Weird is though that I usually curl my hair with a straightener (it’s a good high quality one but it’s pretty old, works perfectly still though!) and my curls last all day. I have very fine hair, nordic hair. So a lot of hair but thin. It curls very easily but recently I bought a curling iron, and with that one my curls barely last an hour. Is it only because the curler is low quality or could it be I don’t have it hot enough? How hot is too hot? 🙈
@Sam Villa.... I'm looking for help. My son and I.. Or hair has changed to low porosity within the year. It has to be due to pollution. My hair is fine his is normal very thick. It could actually cut your skin. What I'm wanting to know if I can bring it back to my old normal porosity. If so, how. I'm using water based with glycerin products. Our hair is wavy/curly. I respect you a lot and have been watching your videos like five years. I'm learning to know what I want done with my hair. You are all respected among stylists. Thanks for your help.
Wow!!! I just ran across you and subscribed right away!! My hair is babyfine thin. It holds nothing. I have to wash with volumizing. Then apply root boost, then maximizing and thickening mousse, then blow dry only with my hands (upside down)n then come back and add texture spray, then curl and lightly misting with hairspray as I curl. Ughhh so frustrating but I can't change it. This video was super helpful! Thanks for the tips!!
I have very straight, fine hair. Without product, my curls last less than an hour. I used setting lotion and pin curls for lasting curls, otherwise forget it, my hair would be stick straight in no time.
Did no one notice that the curl with the 'soon to be released' curling wand/iron was crimped. You can literally see all the little crimps. I'm not a fan. But I do love the tutorial.
Oh my, you have the same condition as my friend. She can’t even ties a high pony tail since her hair tooooo thick and heavy 😂 and she could never curl her hair. But obviously, you guys have such beautiful hair texture really smooth, shine and hard to be damaged

Thanks for sharing that with us Jennifer! Glad you found something that works for your hair.

Tiana Senn YES. I'VE BEEN FINDING THOSE TOO!!!!😂😂😂💖💖
Exactly! Thick hair may be harder to get a curl to hold than fine, tbh.
Or lots and lots and LOTS of fine textured hair, double cursed.
Tiana Senn try curling smaller sections, if you’re in a rush, curl it the night before and put it in a high lose bun and sleep on it

Thank you! I had the exact same question. It would be very helpful to have tutorials on how to apply different products. When my stylist fixes my hair nothing is too sticky or crunchy. I use the same products & still end up with frizzy hair
research your products. products can be damaging--especially cheap products, but going without products and using hot tools is REALLY damaging!
This video is everything I was looking for, thank you so much.
Awesome!!!
Your work is ossum
how to prep hair before curling.love all ur videos.thnks sooo much.
Very nice hair style sir ji ♥️👌😍
Cool for 30 minutes,an awesome tip
Thanks Linda... it takes some time but it's worth it if the curls have to last a long time.
Thank You Andrew . I am learning something every time .
So glad to hear that Keith! Cheers - Andrew
I even bought a new curling Iron thinking that was the problem. Thank you
darn I have super thick hair and thick strands.
This is a great video. How do you set up hair or/and blow dry hair that is very curly to achieve a curl with a curling iron?
Usually we will begin with a blow dry to gently stretch out the curl... not too much tension like I said. Then, if you still need to polish the hair as you curl it, pull it tight to the iron as you curl which will finish smoothing it out.
holy crap this video was so freaking informative my whole life has been a lie! LOL my hair has been too healthy!!!
Ah! Thats the double edged sword with curling hair... if it's super healthy and moisturized, it doesn't love to hold the curls.
awesome!! I have super fine long hair an I had to learn to figure out what works for my hair to hold a curl and I learn something new the pre-texturizing tool is awesome!!
Awesome. Can't wait to try it.
Thank you!! I have the finest straightest limpest hair on earth. Your tips will help!!
Let us know how it goes Sarah :-)
Really great video 👍👌
What about humidity? I live in Florida. Curls that don’t fall is a dream come true.
Happy that I watch this. Taught me something new
The best help always!
Super informative- thank you!
he lost me at "finner, thinner hair" I definitely don't have that
Mia Delao he said soft and silky i just paused and left😕
like honestly curls dont hold all that well with thick long hair cause my hair is heavy and it gets flattened out my its own weight
True because the hair can be long and heavy
Thanks for your useful information.
Serious jaw drop at that curling iron!!! 😱
I agree with everything you said ..
My problem.is when I sleep on it all night ...it looks crazy when I wake up ..lol.
Great video. Lasting curl is always a big issue when I'm creating hair up and partial hair up style for my guests
Im gonna give it a try
Hi can you get these texturing iron in Australia?
Wow. The last tip was amazing... 30 mins to set
I overstretch my hair. It never seems to be tangle free, but it’s shiny!
i have baby fine hair and love the texture iron, but didnt know i could curl right over it!!!😁
I curl my hair perfectly, add hairspray, and it still doesn’t hold! It’s so annoying!
I feel you
Good tips. Thank you for sharing.
Thank u sir nice tips it will help us very much😊
I literally have 3c hair so I don’t have any reason to watch this, but I was so intrigued during this 😂😂
So we need to use both products on our hair or one or the other?? I have long thin/fine hair thats down to my waist almost.
that was awesome....oh and i LOVE my (color teated) damaged hear, soooo mcuh easier to style :)
Glad you liked it!!
Great information! Thanks for sharing!
Kathie Harrop oh, yea I thought that too 😬 looks odd
Not crimped, it’s a result of the texturizing iron he put through. Once curled, the crimps are gone.
SuperDesignChick she's saying it doesn't go away, even after curled.
I have such THICK LOOONG HEALTHY hair you can try EVERY trick in the book. Even profesional hairstylists CANNOT curl my hair. It’s so frustrating.
Oh my, you have the same condition as my friend. She can’t even ties a high pony tail since her hair tooooo thick and heavy 😂 and she could never curl her hair. But obviously, you guys have such beautiful hair texture really smooth, shine and hard to be damaged
Omg high pony’s buns even half ups. Forget about it headache central.
What is the size of curling iron you used on the video?
Thank for the tips lots of persons are not trained the old school way like in my day
Is this texturing before curling the hair , is it going to damage the hair?
Wow best tips I’ve found thus far
