I'm in western ky. I started last fall on my lawn, and it looks great I never would have thought it would look the way it does. I have already mowed 4 times already. I appreciate all the advice you gave it's really helped me. The one biggest thing I've learned is how buying good quality seed makes all the difference.
Although Honda has quit making that mower it's still a keeper. It will last you a lifetime, providing you take care of it. You being a Vet, should know what's the first thing we take care of with our equipment when we come back from the bush. Clean and maintain our equipment! That was nasty, no wonder it took you 6 pulls to get it started, payback for not keeping it clean, lol. As tall as the grass was (wet) I was impressed with the cut. Still not a whole lot of clumping. Grass sure looks nice and green to me and its only Mid-March. Glad you got her cut before the big rainstorm.
I usually bag my first mow, since I never exactly know when its going to be and typically I end up taking a little more than 1/3rd off. Also helps get some of the winter debris of the lawn. I'm in MN so I am still likely a few weeks away from any serious lawn stuff, despite the very warm spring
Your lawn is looking great. We were out of town last week and it rained so much on Friday evening and Saturday here we n the Concord area that it is still too wet to mow as of Monday day morning. I did one mow a few weeks ago before applying preemergent and biostimulants, but it is definitely getting n need of a mow, particularly in areas of the backyard now. Hopefully I can get that done tomorrow and then spray Speedzone and apply JG Mag-I-Cal and liquid fertilizer and biostimulants and couple days later. I’m debating a second preemergent application. I had a lot of clover come up and just the front yard even though I did a full kill and renovation in the fall. Also a good bit of Poa Annua and various broadleaf weeds.
I’m so glad you mentioned the cutting height and taking off a good bit more than 1/3. I’m in Delaware and I’m gonna cut soon but I was worried about taking too much off. Thank you again for another informative video! Your lawn looks amazing. God Bless
Man, I'm in Tampa FL, and our St Augustine grass is JUST starting to wake up. Your lawn looks awesome, though the rest of your neighbors its still dormant.
I'm still using my 10 year old Honda mower. Giving it the yearly tune up this week which is always fun. Temps are def warming up! So glad we are getting out of the cold winter months!
Looks good for the first mow. I did a first mow at 3" two weeks ago, more to clean up the leaves and even it out. Put down preemergent from scotts with fertilizer and the green up is insane.
Hey, the overview of your mower reminded me of a pretty big recall Honda issued recently for the GCV170 and GCV200 engines, you may want to check that your serial number isn't affected. I had to check for my dad last year since he just bought an HRN216, luckily his serial number wasn't in the list. You may have already been notified by Honda if you've registered it, but just wanted to give the heads up since you mentioned it was gifted to you. Been following you for a few years now since the channel was small and I was working at renovating my own lawn in SWVA, keep up the good work!
Thankfully Honda motors are still available, and their clones are too. For my rotary im using an electric which does pretty decent with a high lift blade, but i maining use a late 80s/early 90s Toro Greensmaster 1000 that i got for a 100$, keeps the KBG/Rye might and tight
Lawn is looking good. Have you looked under the deck of that hrx217 yet? Mine has so much grass sticking to the bottom it takes me 30-40 minutes to clean it after a mow. I need to get something else.
You can use a product called Fluid Film on the underside of the deck to keep the grass from sticking it doesn’t completely stop the grass sticking but reduces it. After cleaning the outside of the mower I will apply some to a rag and apply some to the outside of the mower it keeps the mower from attracting dirt and grass
Looks great. Let us know if after the mow if you have more poa triv pop up. I had like 8/10 little spots before I mowed. And now it seems like there multiplied to 30. Every few days I see a new spot. Why I don’t know.
Have you ever tried measuring the actual cut height vs what the mower setting is? Access through the exit chute and measure from the bottom of the blade this can be done on a level garage floor it is common the actual cut height is not the same as the mower setting
I have made 2 attempts to order Jonathan Green Mag-I-Cal Plus from Amazon. The first looks like it originated less than 30 miles away at an Amazon facility in Pineville, NC. The second originated in Georgia. On the day both were to arrive, the order tracking showed there was a problem and slight damage had been detected at the Pineville, NC center and the product was being returned to the seller. It looks like the same thing is happening with the second order. Amazon automatically started a refund of the first purchase. I’m curious as to whether this product is in a bag that is easily damaged? There used to be a hardware store in Charlotte that carried Jonathan Green products. I purchased dense shade mix seed from there in the fall. However, I don’t see them listed in the buy locally store locator on the Jonathan Green site. This has been very frustrating. I was hoping to get it applied within the next couple of days.
Weekly? I wouldn’t put that much N down that often. I’d do that amount maybe per month. You should look up how much N it is per 1K. I’m sketchy on the math.
WOW ~ That looks great for a first mow. Proof that all the prep in the fall is well worth it!

Still a little cold in Michigan but plan on working to transform my lawn this year

Glad you enjoyed!
Central KY here, planning to get my first mow in towards the end of this week after our lawn dries up a bit before the rain comes in this weekend.
Yep, seems it's been really wet everywhere!
I'm one of those Northerners. I'm a little envious that you get to mow this early. 😂 looking good for the first mow.
I get it, lol. Shouldn't be much longer for you all.
I bet it's looking great after that rain we got an inch over the weekend and then wild winds all day Sunday. Have a great day.
Spot on what it looked like here. Yep, looks very nice and the green color is superb!
Man, I'm in Tampa FL, and our St Augustine grass is JUST starting to wake up. Your lawn looks awesome, though the rest of your neighbors its still dormant.
Well, they dont really have cool season grass, so that’s why lol. Only Mr Kevin and I have the fescue.

Good to hear they last!

Looks great!! Got my first Honda self-propelled last year right before they pulled them off the shelves. Great mower!

Looking good. I’ll be doing mine this Wednesday in Winston Salem
Awesome Ron!

Thanks Aaron!!

Oh yea. I’ve changed blades many times and clean it when I do that.

Camera 🎥 or not it’s 🔥!

It's so aggravating. That stuff multiplies so easily it seems.
Have you ever tried measuring the actual cut height vs what the mower setting is? Access through the exit chute and measure from the bottom of the blade this can be done on a level garage floor it is common the actual cut height is not the same as the mower setting
We may Finally have a week off without rain.
About to cut mine to.
Thanks
There's nothing like a first mow to clean up the lawn, or to see how bad it really is (in my case).
lol, me too. Those light spots seem to pop a little more
going to check mine in a few hrs , then mow or wait til decision
Good to see ya Rob!
thx Brother , jus been busy@@MrFergusonLawn
Wow.
I Apply fertilizer all year round..

The ammonium sulphate ryan knore 21-0-0 it's 8oz per 1k. Is that too be applied weekly?
Weekly? I wouldn’t put that much N down that often. I’d do that amount maybe per month. You should look up how much N it is per 1K. I’m sketchy on the math.
If your only doing .5lb of N per week that's roughly .14lbs of N per app.
Big League mowers has a new universal setup…
You can retrofit soooo much easier
That's great news to hear. I hated putting that thing on haha
@@MrFergusonLawn yes the updated setup is very simple
Fly your drone over so we can see from above!
Get rid of those lava rocks. They are nothing but problems.
go get yourself a riding mower lol
Nah, no desire to have that..at all. The honda is great.
