Basically what this means is that you are sweating salt and it is showing on your skin. This tends to happen to those who consume more water than salt in their diets.
I am a salty sweater and this makes sense. My time in the armed forces was rough at PT times. I would recover slowly and doing exercises in the heat was killer. I always felt sick and dead afterwords. I wish I would have know this then.
Great video! I'm a salty sweater, I made a homemade hydration juice using salt, molasses, coconut water, lemon juice and tart cherry juice. So far it's working great. Thanks again. Coach
I started taking Salt Stick capsules before and during runs and it was a real game changer for me. I live in NC where it's humid and warm for much of the year and I routinely come home crusted with salt on my face and arms. Switching from water to Tailwind to hydrate during long runs also made a difference.
I hadn't even thought about some of these things, because I'm not particularly susceptible to cramping. Maybe just because I'm only at 10 miles on my long run. But they all fit to some degree. I don't really feel nauseous during most hot workouts, but I'll have a terrible headache for the rest of the day if I don't replace my electrolytes. This even applies to doing yard work during the hot part of a summer day. And I have been craving salty foods more than usual, especially tortilla chips. I never salt my food, so this one seemed strange. This is all very interesting. Thanks for the video!
So so so helpful. 5/5 so comforting as well and helps me to plan better than I have been. Living in a hot humid environment for much of the year isn't going to help though!!!
Heavy salty sweater. Cramps also related to this. Getting it dialed in a little closer using 1 scoop of Tailwind with 1 Nunn tablet in 20 once bottles. Thanks for video.
I am a very salty sweater... I have all of those! I've been doing a Tbsp of Molasses, some salt, and magnesium in a pint of water after every run and with that salt, which I've more recenrky added, makes me feel sooo much better! Thanks for the video, loved it!
I never thought about being a "salty sweater" but now that I come to think of it, I sweat loads even during the winter (which is quite cold where I live), my sweat does burn when it gets in my eyes and I often have like some powdery substance all over my forhead after a hard run. But I never ever have cravings for salty food though!
I'm definitely 5/5 as well and definitely caused by my genetics. I always look like I jumped in a pool after every training run. After every marathon, I suffer from 2 big whammies: cramps (from sweating so much) and hyponatremia (from drinking too much water to make up for the sweat). What a vicious cycle. I supplement with electrolyte drinks and electrolyte tablets, but it's sometimes not enough. I had hoped the video would be more comprehensive to address my particular problem.
I found that foods rich in zinc and copper actually enhance your heat tolerance and balances the electrolytes in our blood stream #Walnuts #Pecans #Spinach #Chickpeas #Oysters theres more
Omg I’m a salty sweater! This explains why I get so ill running for a short period of time in the heat, and it doesn’t even have to be that hot. I could barely get through training last summer because I would have what I thought was borderline heat stroke. Now I see it was probably electrolyte depletion!
I'm definitely a salty sweater. When I wear a black t shirt it dries with white lines. It also burns my eyes too. Is there a way to test your personal electrolytes to make sure they are balanced. I only use Himalayan salt. I also supplement with potassium citrate with my Bcaas.
i came here searching for the answer why my shorts has a white stain lines from the sweat eversince i do workouts, it comes out the first sign that im really a salty sweater, but i think its not only salt calcium as well
Very interesting, I do have some of these signs. If I feel a bit faint and nauseous after training I pour some regular table salt in the palm of my hand and lick it up, then I feel better almost immediately...
Should I start taking salt stick capsules to help prevent salty sweat because I play basketball if front of hundreds of people I can’t have white salty sweat on my face that’s embarrassing
I sweat a lot during my running sessions. I lose atleast 700grams of water weight after doing a 10k. I do feel dizzy after but never realised it could be because of salt and other electrolytes. Thank you for this video, now i have an idea what i could change. I am going for my first half Marathon in 10 days. Will change my hydration supplies accordingly .
I get sick all summer working outside in extreme heat and humidity like I can't even function -- other people are just like absolutely fine -- I definitely am going to salt up this year!
I'm a salty sweater. I can't run without a headband (my eyes sting so much). by the end of a long run in warm temperature , I'm all crusty. this is not only a problem for my eyes but also for chafing is some private parts. I take water with salt pills during long trail runs (4 hours and over). Ratio 2-2.5 liters of water to 1 pill.
Great video Coach Elizabeth, that has made me understand a few of my problems, I got 4 out of 5 of those signs (Do I pass?) I'm still on the Precision hydration so I will keep an eye on it. Thanks again for keeping us informed with the nutrition.
I am definitely a salty sweater. But i am not sure how much salt is too much to take because I heard way more about how too much salt is bad for you than how much salt is too little to a salty sweater... I really have to find a way to deal with this issue.
I had a sports doctor tell me "you are an excess Sodium excretor" and that is why my eyes burned for a couple of days if I got sweat in my eyes. Thank you for putting this info out as I did not know it until later in life than I wished I had.
I don't run but I'm a Senior that has almost had fainting spells several times when in the sun doing an activity- on a tour, etc. This last time I came close to vomiting. Salt tablets?
Everything she mentions sounds just like a normal bodily reaction to exercises. ^^ I would be on high alert if it is the other way around. Not sweating should raise questions. It is important to stay hydrated and although you might be highly hyped, start smart to not make your body shut down. This will help you protect your most valuable tool: your motivation. Enjoy, have fun and stay safe!
I fit 4 of those 5 signs. BUT, I love running in the heat and humidity. I still think I'm a salty sweater. Curious as to why the heat & humidity don't hit me.
I workout 5 days a week and I noticed that my sweat is only extra salty in the summer. During the winter I sweat a lot as well during a workout, being a big guy. But its just like water almost.
Another sign is cramps. I can get gets leg cramps. Straight water dilutes your blood. Causing hyponatremia, which can cause muscle cramps and even a heart attack.
Take potassium twice a day and you won't have salt stains anymore. You lose potassium in your sweat too... and if you're low on potassium you become hyper sensitive to salt and end up with salt stains. I sweat even if I'm not working out, and if I sweat a lot (which I usually do), I'll have to change my shirt because of all the salt stains. I started taking 300mg of daily potassium supplements and my salt stains went away in a day. Now I can soak my shirt with sweat during a heavy work out, and there are no salt stains when it dries. Also, my blood pressure dropped 20 points to 109/68.
The balance of potassium and sodium is super important! You sweat out all types of salts when you sweat so looking at magnesium and calcium is important too. We would suggest eating more foods with potassium too so you are getting it from natural sources. You have great insight!
Appreciated the details on the other three main electrolytes. Could you please tell me more how calcium assists heart rate ? Also is there a more accurate way to know how much salt tablets to ingest? I don’t really trust my perception on how much is right.
You'll feel nauseous and possibly dry retch and even get diarrhea if you take too much salt. Not a health issues as obviously the body knows how to get rid of it. The secret is to take your body to that point and slightly back off. You'll be surprised how much salt you need.
I am an EXTREMELY heavy sweater (For example, riding indoor for an hour with moderate power means I need to change 3 to 5 t-shirts completely soaked) but I am not sure if my sweat is salty. I understand that much sodium might be lost along with traces of potassium, magnesium, calcium other minerals. What should I know and do to make sure I have the optimal or correct balance of all the electrolytes? This has been a burning question of mine for too long!
I'm the weirdest sweater, it all comes out of my face and back, almost none on my legs and nothing at all from my feet and I have almost no foot odour.I get a build-up of salt gunk on my forehead after sweating I can literally scrape it off and make a paste lol but I never feel faint or ill working out and I used to do long-distance running. everyone is different

is this why cats are drawn to me...when I lick myself...yeah I know it sounds bad but I mean the arm to see just now....tastes strong of salt..when I sweat my t-shirt is covered in white dry....salt I guess. I have very little salt intake and also little water intake. gonna drink more water from now on
I normally sweat a bucket while running, and have always wondered if I'd lose too much electrolyte through sweating. Omg.... Recently I feel dizzy when standing up from my chair. I've been taking Mg everyday for all those years, though. Should I do something more as a salty sweater?? Thank you so much for the precious info, coach Liz!!

In the recent years I have become one, what causes this "issue" or change? Back in the times at HS, I would sweat a lot but it was never really salty. Nowadays I lose way too much salt, when going mountain hiking, my face and my skin is covered in white points and flakes, it's like the Dead Sea. checked 4/5 :'(. I literally feel like dying during day workouts so I mostly train at night but I still sweat buckets and even embarrassing at times. I will try adding electrolytes hopefully it helps.
Hi Coach Elizabeth. Have you done a video on hyponatremia? I know you mentioned it here, but are you able to create a video about it and long distance running - signs, symptoms and what if anything you can you do during a run to bounce out of it? I suffered with it, today, during my marathon and I would like to better understand it, if you have time.
Definitely a salty sweater. My favorite electrolyte product is 'Heed' by Hammer Nutrition. I use Heed in my hydration pack ever time that I train and trail race. Sipping on it during training/racing helps to keep my body charged.
Hi, so I’m pretty sure I’m a salty sweater. I have done two marathons now (last one Houston this past Sunday) and both of them have gone the same way. Great start and up to 32k(about 2h into the race) I’m doing fine. Then I get cramps and I have to walk to get it under control. I thought that mostly had to do with magnesium depletion but could it also be low sodium levels that causes that? I took 5 gels with electrolytes in them and 5-6 cups of Gatorade along with 5-6 cups of water. How much salt can the body store? Is a marathon far to only relay on in body stores? (I’m running just around 3h 10min) is salt tablets worth trying?
I uses SoS sachets (not to be confused with Science in Sport SIS) as they're one of the few that also contain potassium, rather than just sodium, and it's way more palatable then Lucozade sport/galactorade/poweraid isotonic. Great for a salty sweater. store.sosrehydrate.com
Salt (sodium chloride) is normally measured mg, not mcg. I think everyone here should know this, but I can't stop myself from shouting at my screen. To be clear the difference between milligram and micro gram is a factor of 1,000. 1mcg is one millionth of a gram. 1 mg, is one thousandth of a gram. Besides coming across as uneducated, using these arbitrarily when prescribing anything ingested is a dangerous practice - full stop. For example, giving advice to consume Vitamin A accidentally in dosages of mg instead of mcg, could be lethal. I haven't watched the whole video before jumping into keyboard warrrior mode, so please take my comment with a grain of salt (about 60 micrograms - haha). So if a correction was made, apologies.
I didnt even know sweat salt Krystals existed until right now lmao. I literally got this and was trippen out like what is this???? XD I've sweat a lot before but I've never had this. That was so random lmao. Well its my first time in the gym in a while so I guess that's why.
Iam also salty sweater.so tell me some home made solutions.iam not buy expensive products like white people.iam from 3rd world notion plz help me white people.
I literally have salt crystals all over my face after a run or hike. It is insane.
Same
You are eating too much salt or you are not drinking water
Same for me
Same here

I am definitely a salty sweater - my running coach told me to wear a hat to help keep my sweat from dripping and burning my eyes. Seems to work!
I get sick all summer working outside in extreme heat and humidity like I can't even function -- other people are just like absolutely fine -- I definitely am going to salt up this year!
I've been noticing crystals for years now...I thought twas sand...I just tasted it...and it isn't... It's salt

I am not a salty sweater do i have to be worried about that?
I sweat SO MUCH on my runs. I get back from my runs and it makes no difference between sunny or rainy run, I’m equally soaked.
Yep, I get loads of white marks when I do a long session! I drink loads of electrolytes though, so I am usually OK :)
I fit 1 sign the white residue on skin and clothing so I’m still confused am I a salty sweater or not 😂.
my sweat has white foam , am i a salty sweater ?
I don't run but I'm a Senior that has almost had fainting spells several times when in the sun doing an activity- on a tour, etc. This last time I came close to vomiting. Salt tablets?

Thanks for another great vid 👍😎
I just ran and thought I felt like I had sand all over. I just licked my arm and it’s salt.

All I crave after a good exhausting session under 90-100F temperature is a good ice cold coca cola. That counts as craving salty food? 😀
I’m not sure if Coca Cola has salt in it.
I have noticed that all the TRE presenters are infected by tribbles.
Loved this video!
