It's "a very different approach" because they were goofing on Top of the Pops for making them fake-play their instruments, while having Kurt on a live mic to an instrumental track. Basically saying, "f you, you don't want us to play our instruments live, so we're just gonna f--- around and make this whole performance ridiculous." It's yet another reason that this band's sense of humor made them one of the best ever.
+Craig T. Ollting I have a question- why do shows like these always make bands lip synch instead of playing live? One of my fave bands INXS were great live but when they played at tv performances like these they lip synched so ive often wondered...
They were forget to sing off playback because they were sick of the song already.. They then said they were just gonna play another one, to which why they were made to sing over the playback.. And the rest was correct, this was a big fuck you to the music industry
Kurt Cobain was such a distinguished master guitarist, that he could actually play without touching the strings, or the guitar. The immense euphoria he was feeling from performing on TOTP was enough to trigger his god state, wherein his 72 years of ventriloquism experience enabled him to play the guitar through the inconspicuous CD player hooked up to the speakers. "Load up on drugs and kill your friends" with the power of Kurt Cobain. Distinguished Master Guitarist with other 400 competitive wins.
+Jacob Craddock They were protesting being forced to fake playing their instruments. Look at the way they are playing. They are mocking how you play instruments. He also decided to mess with the vocals and clearly sings "Load up on drugs, kill your friends," at the beginning.
When asked to lip-sync ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ to a pre-recorded tape Kurt Cobain protested by singing an octave lower (he later confirmed he was imitating Morrisey from The Smiths).
Look up Smile Empty Soul. They left their original record company (that got them famous), bc they refused to release their 2nd album until they changed controversial lyrics. Now they tour and do their own shit themselves ever since. ;)
They say 'no' to industry at the same time as they are signed to a major label. That doesnt make any sense you idiot. They didnt say 'no', they said YES to the industry.
The point I was making was, they were asked to pretend to play their instruments to a song that they wrote, they didn't think that was right so they purposely blew the performance. I'm just saying doing something like that takes courage. No need to get antagonistic bro. Just listen to the sweet low bars of Kurt.
You should have been "there," back in the day. Before Nirvana... there was nothing but watered-down shitty "Hair Metal." These three guys really broke the industry. It was something to see. I know it's been said before, but... they really brought Punk to the front of the line.
"Load up on drugs, kill your friends" man i just miss kurt so much. Now i wish that i havent heard of Nirvana so i dont have to feel this pain in my heart. ;(
Kurt was a disgrace to the music industry and a failure at life.. he hated the fact that he had fans like you to begin with.. he was a drug addict and totally deserted his child with his selfish act of suicide! The world is so much better off without this waste of skin..
I love the camera cutting to Kurt's impressive guitar solos only to find a mannequin-like hand mimicking the action. Kurt was a master of subverting expectations. He will be missed. 🙏

Lol look at Grohl dancing like a lunatic behind the drums with a stupid grin on his face. Nirvana either had massive balls to pull a stunt like this or they just didn't give a fuck. Probably a little of both.
Aside from the obvious rebellion against commercialization and acknowledging Nirvana as one of my favourite bands of all time, after watching this a couple of times I’ve come to appreciate the skill of the producer who edited this and made it look (as close as he ever could) like they were performing for real. For all we know he might have very well wanted Nirvana to play live but couldn’t undermine head office decisions at the BBC. I bet back then (with TV resolution a lower quality than it is now) a few kids and even adults were probably watching live and didn’t immediately notice. Even Kurt’s voice might have made them think it was some sort of unique take on a song they didn’t understand anyway.
Sonny Lee because Kamren is an idiot - they weren't told to lip sync; as Mike P pointed out, they had to fake-play instruments while Kurt sang live vocals.
the reason for all of this was because the producers of the show wanted nirvana to have the pre-recorded song play and kurt hated this so he decided to make it painfully obvious. at the end when they start destroying equipment but the song is still playing they finally cut away but i'm surprised it took them that long with kurt playing the guitar like that
In the 70s and 80s TOTP was pre-recorded, but at that time TOTP was broadcasted live. If I recall the details correctly, TOTP had edited the song heavily and wanted him to lip-sync along to it, which he refused. So they lectured him on the importance of acting sensibly and restraining his lyrics, because Cobain was known for acting outrageously on stage and swearing and using improvise lyrics that were inappropriate before the 9pm watershed. Cobain took offense to this and wanted to storm out of the studio, but the BBC reminded him they had a contract in which he agreed to perform. So, Cobain fulfilled his contractual obligations by performing in a parody of a boring British voice, or the way it appeared to him. The sonorous baritone Kurt affects sounds like a cross between Morrissey, Ian Curtis and Barry White. I love the stiff hand guitar "playing", to make it even more obvious they are not playing their guitars lol.
Thanks for uploading this, this video is hilarious totp were totally in the wrong only alowing live singing and not the band to play live but on the flipside if i was a fan (i like Nirvana now but at time i was into different style of music)and this was the only time i got to see them as they probably rarely came to the UK i would ve pretty p***ed off. Having said that i completely empathise and support what they did
“Kurt hatched a plan with Novoselic and Grohl to make a mockery of their performance. As the backing track played, Kurt sang the vocals in a slowed-down, almost Vegas-like lounge version; he was attempting, he later claimed, to sound like Morrissey.”
It's such a funny story. They tell the band that all the instrument sounds will be recordings. They really just want Kurt's voice for the live show, and Kurt was like "Fuck That" He figured he'd give them a Unique version that no one had ever heard before. It's awesome.

The camera man must have thought ''Ive got to film this it's priceless''
i'm a drummer but i noticed how odd it looked

Nope, he was a very bad guitarist, but lip sync? No, that's bad

You are really stupid he did this because they wanted him to lip sync but he didn't and fooled around

It sounds frickin amazing
I'm not a fan of nirvana, but someone who had the balls to do this live is surely a badass :P.
he's worst at what he does best.
Same, they're kinda like SOAD. Fuck the system, fuck doing what others want you to.
