Korg SQ-64 -Sonic LAB Review

  • Korg’s first Sequencer since the SQ-1 - which came out the same time as the MS-20 mini and was a simple 8 step analog affair. The SQ-64 is an altogether different beast.
    It appears to take it's inspiration from the 3 melodic tracks and a drum track, like Beatstep and Keystep Pro from Arturia, but the way it addresses them is different.

    Korg actually fixed many problems in the new 2.0 firmware update. You can now quantize steps and they even made the LEDs brighter! Together with the recent price drop, this little box is suddenly looking a whole lot more attractive... (I bought it.)

      @@NeonArtifact Well… you can use all of the above (the Pro versions of the Arturia gear), so it’s up to what kind of a workflow/interface you prefer. Plus your budget and how much desk space you’re willing to sacrifice. I don’t remember if any of your synths have CV ins, so you’ll probably need a MIDI splitter in any case, unless you want to route MIDI via a DAW.
      The Keystep Pro has both a keyboard and step sequencers, so if you want an all-in-one device, I would perhaps choose that. But it’s also a whole lot bigger and more expensive than the SQ-64, which you can also combine with a keyboard when you need to. What the Beatstep Pro is best at is drums IMO. (I’ve bought and sold it twice… I want to like it, but don’t :-P)

    • @NeonArtifact

      @@Stakkeroid thanks for the response! I actually have CV on the Mono Station and Keystep. I've got the original SQ-1 right now. I was about to buy a Beatstep Pro for 150, but already have the normal version as well as Keystep. Perhaps the SQ-64 without v2.0 firmware and quantization would be best... Why didn't you like the BSP?

    I have both this and the Keystep Pro. It's taken longer to get used to the SQ-64 but what I do like is having 64 project spaces. Patterns on top of that makes for a lot of space. I quickly ran out of project space on the KSP and dont like the software. But I find the KSP better at creating new music spontaneously. Great review but I still don't "get" the product. It seems very laborious and inscrutable compared to the Arturias. I can't help feeling the Volca development team would have created a far more user-friendly and engaging product.
    Lack of transpose from the MIDI input is a fail in 2021. At least Arturia got with it to provide this essential feature that's been asked-for on digital sequencers for decades. I particularly miss it on the Novation Mono Station. I get around it on the MPC One by feeding a Neutron with both MIDI and CV.

      On the upside, I don't think these will be released this year. They keep blowing past their stated release dates and it's still in preorder. My theory is that they have been affected by the chip shortage, that is why they are using inferior DACs (and hense being out of tune) and for whatever reason they won't tell the truth that they don't have the means to make them. How is the precision of the CV after a power cycle? One frustration I had with the SQ1 is that in order to change global settings, a power cycle was required. And even if the rest of your gear was still powered, the CV outs of the SQ1 would often shift significantly, so you’d have to go back and trim the voltages.

    • @joeSeggiola
      @joeSeggiola 3 года назад +1

      CV is constant across reboots, at least in my unit. Anyway it looks like it's about 0.05V off all the time, fortunately you can adjust it with a negative offset in GLOBAL settings. Speaking of, you don't need a power cycle to change any setting.

    Another fantastic review and demo Nick!! Sure like seeing those MIDI parameters, so important to see if we can control the clock in and program changes. So many sound devices accept program changes, but then don't allow you to turn off their program change, frustrating. I own an Electribe2, and much of the SQ64 sequencing is familiar, except the Electribe does not allow you to turn off quantize, great to see a free play option. Would have liked to see a 128 step for 8 bars, or an 8 measure with any quantize resolution. Measures, with quantize divisions (from zero to 1/64) is still rare today, seems stepping remains popular over pattern sequencing. Patterns are for musicians and steps are for tweakers...I guess???

    I understand the difference between a pattern sequencer like this and a linear seguencer like the Roland MC 50, and they are cool for different uses but I wish there was some kind of hibrid, I like the approach of "playing" the sequencer, in real time but there are passages that need to be free of a pattern. Like having two different sequencers in one. Like combining an Arturia beatsep pro with an Alesis MTT 8

      They'd probably argue that the unit would have to be thicker (like why they got rid of headphone jacks on mobile phones), but who tf cares if it's a bit thicker? It's not like I'm trying to cram these in my pocket or stack them in storage as efficiently as possible.

    I'll wait and see if they do a bigger version (or maybe an addon slave unit with just the pads?) or update it to have more tracks with a shift function.

    I owned the SQ-64 and can say it was one of the most frustrating sequencers I have ever used. And Korg's horrible firmware track record with other devices made me get rid of it. First, it's so hard to tell which steps are on and which are off. Did Nick mention this in the video? If not, he needs to. I have never in my life used a sequencer with this level of difficulty in deciphering which steps are on/off. The LEDs when steps are off are slightly dimmer than those on the on-steps. Good luck trying to decipher them when you're jamming. Second, no pattern length on individual drum tracks. Third, the lack of a quantize-all mode is laughable. You have to quantize step by step. If you can live with these things, go for it. Personally, I found this sequencer to be one of the most disappointing I've used because it has great features in a great size but they're eclipsed by the awful LEDs on off-steps and the other issues that I mentioned. I couldn't stand looking at all those red steps for more than a few minutes at a time.

    • @rs0389
      @rs0389 3 года назад +1

      It should have been a direct clone of the SQ-1 with four times as many steps. The lack of pitch dials is a massive let down. There are other devices that have better sequencers built in for less such as the Behringer crave, the behringer 960, or the monologue. You try using the MIDI with older devices on the SQ-64 it is really frustrating. Also the screen flickers terribly if the MIDI clock, TX, RX and MIDI channels are not set up correctly. CV is not as bad but still takes some time to make sense of. MIDI over 3.5 seems like it is missing some functionality.

    you say it feels solid, but of all my smaller controllers this is the one i fear dropping the most due to the shear weight of the darn thing given it's tiny size. I doubt something this heavy would survive a drop. considering a bumper for that innevitable moment.

      I think Korg got hit by the chip shortage and they are not able to make them. I don't think they will be released this year. I don't know why Korg won't provide an explanation but it seems highly unusual to release a product and then not make it available. By the time they finally release it it'll be forgotten.

      @@JDLesemajeste That may be true...but it shouldn't be, for something of that form. It is a useful tool, not a fun new synth. I have been depressed, by both Korg's silence, and the ensuing mixed messages from everyone else. Thanks for adding that, JD.

    I have this SQ and it is unfinshed in some way. Not intuitive, not tested enough. For me, main things missing are - quananization, global loop mode (for editing steps in gate/pitch/mood while looping), normal ARP, selecting range of steps in gate/pitch/mood (now i am limited in number of fingers avilible) and , last but not least, overdubing live that will not give me depression and will sound as played. I have bought SQ-64 beacuse of its potential, i just hope it is not wasted. There is workaround for quantanize steps and normal ARP - keystep works ok. But is it "ok" Korg?
