I picked one of these up simply because of the $129 price that was going on. The features you highlight make me glad I did. The video is the right length and depth. Now if they would just make it easier to distinguish the active notes from the inactive, it’d be more fun to use. There is no reason we should not be able to have inactive notes set to 0% brightness.
I figured it out. Hit Projects then push any empty button that's not lit. Use Initial which loads it. Play something using one or all 4 tracks. To Save hit Projects but make sure you turn the selector to SAVE or you write over your song. You'll get the option to Save (left side), or Cancel (right).
Man can you tell me how to make midi work Wich kind it trs midi a need to use and what I need to change for make it work my volcas in the sequencer? I tried with nts-1 and also with volca keys and they doesn't work
I have managed to create full 3-4 minute songs by chaining patterns together. In the pattern mode, just select what pattern comes after which in each track. Works quite okay IMHO.
Thanks for the video. How did you manage to control the different sounds of the sample due to it's weird midi implementation? I use the RetroKits RK-002 but I don't see it here.
Can we also use any sound of plugins/VST from Ableton and play with them in SQ64? So not using external gears at all. Just Live and SQ64. For instance making a beat and just improvise with it.... Thx
@@Noisegate would love to see a tutorial on how to set this up with an Ableton rack. Would like to be able to use the drum sequencer to trigger samples

That was a great tutorial. Are the pads with no steps on them as bright as they look in the video or is that because of the camera? Makes it seem difficult to see which steps are on and which are off. I love that it has Select for the Loop feature. One of my favorite aspects of the Volcas. Was bummed when I got a TR-8S and realized its version of Active Step was just step length working backwards from the end of the pattern, instead of the way Korg does it. Does this have a Step Jump mode like in Volcas (repeating steps by holding them down)?
Unfortunately they are. I wish you could shut the light off entirely for the pads that are off. I also love the step jump in the SQ-1 and I am very much hoping that I can do a similar thing with this SQ-64. Got mine yesterday so I still have a lot of messing about to do.
Nice vid, mate! I notice in the beginning of the video you said "I think that's the drum", when you selected it before you entered in the steps, is there not a way to preview the sound your working with before you enter in the steps?
Yes, if you don't hold down a step you can push any of the trigger buttons and hear them, or work out a rhythm, etc. When you're ready to enter a step then hold down the step and push that trigger.
Can you record chords into it in realtime via the MIDI IN using an external MIDI keyboard, rather than have to use the isomorphic keyboard (or program chords in manually)?
What is the ASIN of your midi breakout cables? I understand there are different types and not all of them will work. I have tried two different products so far with no luck.
Great video! I just purchased this but this seems to only be able to play track A with an external midi keyboard when connected to my 4 volcas. Do you have any insight on how to play each track with an external midi keyboard?
I was looking into this but I’m not educated on these devices. Isn’t this the one what people keep complaining about saying korg basically abandoned fixing any of the bugs with it?
Yeah, very useful walkthrough. You covered the basics really clearly and succinctly. Just to confirm what I’ve read: the sq-64 gives you only one modulation lane per melodic track, right? So if you’re on MIDI mode you can automate only one CC...? The melodic tracks store pitch and gate, I guess. Do they also store velocity (So that I don’t need to use the modulation lane to sequence velocity changes)? I’m thinking having only one CC automation lane per track is too little.
Would like to know too. Was just looking at Cirklon 2 which is much more expensive and complex, but you can modulate/automate many parameters at the same time.
Cirklon is a completely diferent piece of gear appart from price, i think that for big setups is the thing, but i think overkill on small setups, but a wonderful piece of gear
@@thoseonemusic yes, Cirklon 2 is out of the question for me. I’m one of those pauper synth enthusiasts who cannot justify paying more for a sequencer than for a good synth. A big deal of the appeal of the SQ-64 is the price. Perhaps I might be able to stretch resources/shame for an OXI One, which will be between $450 and $600. Or I might just decide for a Keystep Pro, although I don’t like the size (and don’t really need a controller keyboard)... BUT I am still hoping Korg updates this one adding a couple of things that’d make it perfect for me. I’ve heard this still has a number of firmware bugs, so updates will likely happen.
@@WxkR i think like you, i don't need the keyboard and i already have one, i personnaly like very much the korg, but there are 2 more that keep getting my attention, the black synth from erica and the nerdseq 🙂, but probably i will go on the korg
It's super-frustrating waiting for this to come out... KORG really needs to get better at communicating availability for new products (at least in the US). Can't wait to get it and start working on some new music in a more logical way than just messing around.

Not having any color coding between seq lanes and the thousands of pads (without velo sens!) is extremely confusing. I mean why not put rgb leds and some painted dividers in there? Red leds on full black/grey is just offputting. Also programming any modulation seems to be done solely on like 2 knobs and endless menus under one button. Korg uses Type A, Arturia etc uses Type B. If you get Type A it should work fine, I use it with a volca fm
Is there software for managing projects on this device or is it limited too 64 projects with no way to move things from the device too the computer?
Currently there is no way to save to a computer, that's why I keep my Launchpad Pro mk3 :)
Thank you! Does it give you the opportunity to build an arrangement? Or just 64 steps and that's it?
