  • The British Army is fully prepared for war and is capable of defeating Russia with the support of NATO, despite recent criticisms suggesting it is ill-equipped and unable to field a division for combat.
Tory MP James Heappey, a former Army officer, emphasises the significance of the British Army's role, highlighting its reputation as one of the very best, if not the best, army pound for pound in NATO.

Not true. Wembley Stadium holds 90,000. The British Army's size is 75,325 as at April 2024, leaving 14,675 seats unoccupied.
The Royal Navy has 29,220 full-time, trained personnel - as well as 2,730 reservist personnel. 75,325 Army + 29,220 = 104,544. So the British Army and Royal Navy together would not all fit into Wembley.

I agree with MP Heappey's summation and commentary. He's at the very least a realist and, shows a pragmatic attitude towards Britain's armed forces, its roles and priorities.
The UK is above all else a Sea Power, with fine air defense capabilities via the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm to protect the fleet, and the homeland and, has traditionally fielded only "Colonial Forces" type land forces rather than the heavy maneouver divisions as in WW2 and the Cold War.
Germany, France and Poland are land powers and should provide the bulk of the manpower-heavy combat forces in a European land war while the Royal Navy attempts to strangle any sea borne efforts by the enemy. UK Special Forces can then be tasked with small unit operations that can have large effects on the conflict...and they are VERY good at that.

I am 86 and served as NCO (Sgt) in the special services, ending up my day in the school of infantry, so I feel I can make some comment.
At the rate of casualties that are being experienced right now with Ukrainian troops, who have already shown us how efficient they are, it is time to step back and determine exactly how we are going to deal with drones.
We have the Parachute Regiment (my old unit) capable of dealing with the enemy (there is more than the Royal Marines capable of fighting) but we are so hollowed out that large casualties could seriously weaken us and the Regiment.

It's the sustainability! For every unit that you deploy you need another 2x units. Simply for rotation, training, workup, etc.
So, one brigade in the field means you need a total of 3x brigades. One division in the field means you need a total of 3x divisions. Iraq and Afghanistan were prime examples of the manpower requirement to maintain a certain level of troops in the field.

However; what I believe it is saying is that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson's historic visit to pledge unwavering military and financial support to President Zelensky in the early days of the Ukraine war showed the world a sleeping giant which was woken from a centuries' old slumber. It showed what The United Kingdom was in days of old, what it is emerging as before our eyes in the present and what it must remain in the future. You do not need all the kit in the world to be superpower as is proven every day in the Ukraine war with Russia having everything but the sun in its pocket and bleeding out from all sides to boot to a much smaller foe. Nevertheless; what you do need most of all to be a superpower---in my humble opinion and I am far from an expert in military affairs---is the military mindset that Great Britain uniquely possesses.

Everything our military is equipped with that's been manufactured by the UK is either obsolete or keeps breaking, and that's everything from our assault rifles right up to our tanks and naval war vessels. A large proportion of our combat troops that may have to fight and maybe fix bayonets will be wearing non smudge lip gloss and across our entire military forces, we're tiny in numbers, we can still beat potential enemies????? Oh my god, I bet the British military bosses from the days of Wellington through to Churchill, Thatcher and Blair knew what these "experts seem to know now"!!!!!

Proposal: Establishing a British International Fighting Legion
This proposal outlines the creation of a British International Fighting Legion, a specialized unit within the British Army. This legion would leverage the skills and experience of foreign nationals residing legally in the UK, offering a valuable contribution to national defense.
    Rationale:
Enhanced Manpower: A significant number of Polish citizens, and potentially others, express a strong desire to serve alongside the British Army. This legion would provide a dedicated channel for their skills and experience.
Expanded Age Range: Extending the recruitment age limit, similar to the Polish model (up to 63), would broaden the available talent pool and potentially include young and mid age or ever 40+ with valuable expertise.
Strengthened International Force: An inclusive legion would foster a strong international force, reflecting the UK's diverse population and bolstering its global standing.
Historical Precedent: The contributions of Polish pilots during World War II demonstrate the effectiveness of foreign nationals serving alongside British forces.

Not really, Ivan - but you keep thinking that. And remember, it is always QUALITY over QUANTITY.
And also remember, Britain’s close close ally, the USA, is well-stocked and prepared. 😊 Russia doesn’t stand a chance.

It would be hard for a military to keep all those engineers, logistics, and behind the lines soldiers employed when not at war. The equivalent to our national guard, but in Britain should all be trained to be those men.

em...this is kind of laughable to be honest. Russia has the biggest and best equipped army in the world due to the way they have spent so much money on the military over the years and their industrial armaments base churning out shells etc. There is only so far bravery can take you. Ask the Ukrainians!

There is reputedly enough 155mm ammo to last between 7 & 14 days. Dannet said a [large] formation in the field [ taking casualties ] could last for 7 weeks. So a sustainable war fighting formation over a period of years would be of a Tactical Battalion Group size, that's if Sunack can be bothered to buy any ammo? James Heappey is first and foremost a tory M.P.
