People have treated him like a joke for so long. In a time where every player sounds the same as the next, he is still one of the few guys who truly has a unique style and voice. If you sound like Yngwie, its because you are copying Yngwie, and there is nothing more obvious than a Yngwie copy.

Love him or hate him, you can’t argue his single-minded, no-compromise artistic sensibilities. Even though they often come across as elitist or arrogant, such artists can change the world in ways that pandering, ear-tickling compromisers cannot. His hero, Blackmore, is the same way, as was Holdsworth, who he name-checks in this video (although of the three Holdsworth was by far the most talented and simultaneously the most humble). I don’t own an Ynwie Malmsteen album. As a prog fan, I find his song arrangements quite pedantic compared to the incredible technique and passion of his lead playing. But credit where credit is due: the guy more or less single-handedly invented the rock sub-genre of Neoclassical Rock. His playing isn’t merely a freak show of blisteringly fast techniques-it drips with passion and emotion as well. He marches to the beat of his own drummer, and I’m fairly certain Ynwie couldn’t care less what any of us think. I admire that about him.
