Love him or hate him, you can’t argue his single-minded, no-compromise artistic sensibilities. Even though they often come across as elitist or arrogant, such artists can change the world in ways that pandering, ear-tickling compromisers cannot. His hero, Blackmore, is the same way, as was Holdsworth, who he name-checks in this video (although of the three Holdsworth was by far the most talented and simultaneously the most humble).
I don’t own an Ynwie Malmsteen album. As a prog fan, I find his song arrangements quite pedantic compared to the incredible technique and passion of his lead playing. But credit where credit is due: the guy more or less single-handedly invented the rock sub-genre of Neoclassical Rock. His playing isn’t merely a freak show of blisteringly fast techniques-it drips with passion and emotion as well. He marches to the beat of his own drummer, and I’m fairly certain Ynwie couldn’t care less what any of us think.
    I admire that about him.

@@GuitarTotality Yngwie used to play much better, but nowadays he can't play worth crap. He invented himself by playing 8-gauge strings on a scalloped fretboard for wide vibratos, sticking with a single A-minor arpeggio and using cocaine for fast harmonic minor runs. He's been trying to reinvent himself for about 30 years - now he can't even play his own solos. I've been a longtime fan, just maybe angry at him for blowing it off and being so frickin' lazy. The problem is in his head, being stuck on one lane forever. He's a sex maniac who sees himself as a pornstar with a guitar, not realizing that after 30 years those same pickup lines are getting way too old. He was creative up until Facing the Animal. Then he got so cocky it partially blinded him. Nobody can take him seriously anymore.

I'd just mastered the scale run in Over The Mountain (Ozzy/Randy Rhoads) and then Yngwie came about. That was when the idea of modes really struck me, because Randy's Mixolydian run sounds instantly Yngwie-ish if you play it with the Phrygian mode, and even more-so if you play it with Harmonic Minor (or one of its modes, the Phrygian Dominant).

Uli Roth was another one doing great stuff with Mixolydian and other scales/modes, way back in the 70s, great stuff

@@Hologhoul Uli is one of my favourite guitarists, and has played a significant role in how I developed my style. That Jeff Beck style upward slide with simultaneous whammy bar dip? I totally stole that from him. :D

If you slow it down a little bit, it kind of seems like Andre the Giant is talking.
