    On a three phase compressor the windings always read the Same resistance. if the compressor is good.

    Thanks for the teaching,and a have a question what meant is when checking between the Wingdings you get OL on a 3 face compressor,exactly the same like you used to teach. Thanks for the answer y your time

    • @JumpermanTech
      @JumpermanTech  2 года назад

      You're very welcome & thank you for watching! OL would mean you have open windings which means you have a bad compressor and it must be replaced. What you are checking is the resistance of the windings to see if they are in tact or not. The best test for this is to use a meter called a megohmmeter and I made a video on how to check all kinds of compressors with that. Stay tuned for new videos every week🔧⚡️

    Good video. O.L. is actually Over Limit which means that the value is over the measurable limit. Such as what infinite ohms would be if there is no continuity to ground

    • @scottshawn70
      @scottshawn70 2 года назад +3

      Technically it does not mean “over limit” it means open loop or open line to signify there is no continuity. When checking continuity you are checking if there is a closed path for current.. or if it’s “open”.

    Why manufacture 3 phase compressors instead of one phase?

    • @ridered03cr
      @ridered03cr 4 года назад +3

      3 phase is more for commercial. Though you can do 3 phase for your residential home, I just don’t see why you would really need to. It’s also more expensive.
      3 phase compressors draw a lot less current than single phase. So you can achieve the same tonnage with less power.
      They have much more starting torque as well, meaning you don’t need to run a capacitor or a start capacitor for the compressor to run. They also last longer too. Hope this helps.

    Noobie here. What would a ground mean? Why don't you want any grounding?

    • @nickschmid2273
      @nickschmid2273 4 года назад +4

      If the electricity has a direct path to ground at this location where the plug is, the electricity will take the path of least resistance and go to ground, instead of through the load. When electricity has no resistance like that, and goes straight from the power source to ground, it will flow very rapidly and cause whatever it is flowing through to heat up very quickly. A circuit breaker or fuse will pop when this sudden rush of current goes through them.

    I have a question. Today I was diagnosing a compressor for a mini split that was making weird noises and after 3-4 seconds it stops on thermal overload. I took the resistance on the 3 terminals and all were the same resistance. But when I was checking each to ground I had continuity. I was buffled because I know a grounded comp trips the breaker but this one would trip the overload plus it would try to start for a few seconds. I read the diagram and it seems to be a star winding configuration. My boss told me that those comps are by default grounded. It's the first time I have seen this. Is it for real? I am questioning my boss's knowledge atm 😅
